Cheers, JBC.

And here is Roland's first grail page image

I don't know why, but that image didn't show on my browser.

Great episode, thanks!  A few eye-openers too - I hadn't copped the musical references at all (apart from Joe Scummer of course; that one was easy).  I would have thought Shrike's look owed a tiny bit to Screamin' Jay Hawkins too.

Cool.  I bought the Horned God audiobook when it came out - it'll be interesting to see what other squaxx made of it.

I'm enjoying it so far (about halfway). Halo Jones is the most successful of these adaptations, I think. The Pit was good but I struggled to identify all the judges by voice.

It's quite a task alright, but The Pit has a huge cast.  Wasn't quite on board with Guthrie's drawl - I always saw his undercover self as a fast-talker.

Jules Boyle is back, and the audio is better! He takes me through the third volume of Slaine's adventures, some classic UKCAC tales, and explains how Glenn Fabry came to draw him into the pages of Slaine the King.

My Danu, imagine being drawn into that. It's an absolute masterpiece, and captures the off-duty, fun Sláine of old at his best.

Another great podcast by the way!

A chat with Mike Collins about his illustrious career, and about the graphic novel about Apollo 11.

https://megacitybookclub.blogspot.com/2021/03/150-mike-collins.html

Thanks for this one Eamonn. I've just finished 'Apollo' and its an astonishing read. Just brilliant. Give its a tale of truly monumental events, with astonishing flights of fantasy weaved into the tale it is still at its heart an entirely human and personal piece. It quite brilliantly captures the scale, wonder and impact of the event of the moon landing but does so by focusing on the intimate impacts on the three astronauts and those that surround them.

Its quite a quiet masterpiece I have to say. Mike Collins art is subline and the writers with so much to say and such wonderful insights know, with a fantastic precision when to leave it to Mike Collins and the art to perfectly tell the story.

I'd not have discovered this without the podcast so thank you.

Thanks for all the comments. Glad you enjoyed, Apollo, Colin. I shared your comment with Mike Collins and he was delighted.

The podcast turned 5 years old last week. Thanks to Conrad from the mighty Space Spinner 2000 for reminding me.

And thank you to all my guests and contributors. Lots more to come with some Strontium Dog, Zenith, The Thirteenth Floor, and a revisit of the Apocalypse War coming up in the next few weeks

Eamonn Clarke

Forum man of letters Jim Campbell joins the book club to discuss the early Strontium Dog story Journey into Hell, and the history of comic book lettering.

We also pause to pay tribute to the late, great Dave Evans. You can find the Justgiving link on the website below.

Here is a grey scale version of the colour dps grail page by King Carlos as picked by Jim in episode 157

sheridan

Now you've got me wondering why it's in greyscale - is it to highlight the use of chiaroscuro in the artwork, which colour would distract from?  Or is that all you could grab your hands on?  I'll just have to listen and find out!

Eamonn Clarke

All I could find was the colour 2 page spread. In the agency files its in black and white which Jim preferred so I converted the colour to greyscale to post it here.
