He doesn't try and spin his way out of it by pretending it was a new direction they tried. He says plain and simple that he didn't get it and wrote crap. And couldn't believe his luck being given the gig.

(But then again, he can afford to now)

Year 1 Dredd appears to be in-continuity with 2000ad Dredd, but then you'd expect that with Tharg writing it.
