08 January, 2010, 10:31:45 AM
YYEEEESSSSSSS Thank goodness th e snow started falling again so I canned attempting to get to work as Chiltern area bit crap in the cold. The doughty postie turned up for the first time in many  days and there amongst the drivel of adverts was PROG 32 of 2000AD! One of the fabbest progs ever with Dan Dare (no upper middle class twat in this version)battling vampires (see heroes used to fight vamps not want to fucvking be one), a future shock I havent read yet and Mach One. I'm as happy as a pusscat with extra cream and a shag.(Carpet )

originally 9p it cost me, well, let's just say it was worth it no matter what the price!  :)

Feth me!

Nothing much there yet other than it's CGI. I hope it doesn't suffer the fate of the Bloodquest movie.

Other Reviews / Judge Dredd vs. Aliens "Incubus" TPB
29 August, 2009, 03:37:03 PM
Got this  on a whim as I was in Waterstones. John Wagner and Andy Diggle scripted whilst Henry Flint supplied the art. There's also an introduction by Simon Pegg he of Star Trek and Shaun of the Dead fame.

This is a great fun read throughout. Not just Dredd but some interesting  characters like the Verminators as well as the horrible aliens with their acidic blood and deadly French kisses.

The book has some little extras, like original covers,(including a cover variant by Jock that I just love),some  Flint roughs and a section of script that was eventually dropped.

It works well because Dredd is focused and uncompromising and er so are the Aliens, the humanity bit is really brought by the luckless Verminators and Judge Sanchez. Mutants, mayhem and even an appearance by Mechanismo droids add to the mix nicely.

Expensive but I don't care.

Games / Wolfenstein-some SPOILERS
23 August, 2009, 09:10:44 PM
Finally after an eight year wait we get a sequel to the sequel that was Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Basically the plot is, if you don't know, Nazis and their undead allies being blown away by you, playing  as B.J Blazkowicz an American soldier and expert in the occult.

The good- excellent graphics and new weapons, Fun physics so you can cause massive destruction and unpleasant deaths such as levitating a baddie nazi occult scientist then setting him on fire by blasting nearby explodey things. And watch him buuuurrn! A joy. And you have superpowers at the start which you'll either like or hate.

the bad-the map system used to navigate is basically crap. Even following the compass can lead you astray but the missions are relatively short. Also the town of Eisengrad where it's set is a bit dull. The streets are all a bit alike and you soon notice you're going round the same streets several times. Worse of all the magnificent leather clad killer Nazi babes of Return have been replaced by rather feebler killer babes that fire miserable little blasts at you or whip you. Ahem. There are some excellent new baddies  chuckling psychos with knives, invisibility and superspeed are quite chlling. The ending though where you have to knock off the same guy three times is frankly an annoyance.

It's good  could have been  better! 8 out 10.

I am (fairly) sure that there was an attempted rival to 2000AD. An anthology sci -fi (not Toxic or Overkill or Starjammers) that had as it's lead story a group of space mercenaries (who only appear in the last panel) and who had whackily designed power armour. I've scoured various web sites but to no avail. I think it only lasted one issue. And this strip was painted rather than b&w with colour I seem to recall.

Was it all a dream?  If so I'm nabbing the characters and all rights thereof.

A bit of a long shot I know given my "vague" descriptions.

Other Reviews / Judge Dredd-Satan's island
10 August, 2009, 08:27:59 PM
John Wagner writer

Artdroids Kev Walker,(Sin City), Ben Willsher, (Case for the defence),Paul Marshall (Reprisal), Cam Kennedy (The trial of Orlock).

There appears to be the worlds biggest typo at the beginning of this with the inside cover reading "Judge Dredd Total war" and crediting lots of artists not featured in this collection.Maybe it's a very poorly designed advert.

That aside what's not to like in this ? Dredd brutal as ever, the citizens of MC-1 reveal more about the truly, unpleasant nature of human beings than a dozen preachy liberal tomes when they get to visit a moveable island where everything is legal.

Needless to say the Judges have an alterior motive for allowing "Sin Cty-Satans Island" to dock near the Atlantic Wall. One involving a deadly plague, looney eco terrorists and Orlock, the east meg agent who started the block wars.

Fun all the way with the last panel in Sin City making it worth buying all by itself.

Excellent art throughout.Highly recommended.  8)

Help! / Vampires in Dan Dare
05 August, 2009, 10:01:31 PM
Can anyone remember if 2000ad's DD fought vampires (possibly in some ancient greek/roman setting). It was definitely drawn by Dave Gibbons. Or perhaps I've gone mad.  :'(

The system is convinced it exists.

Perhaps he's gone mad.

Grant me your wisdom...
