As we know Ian Gibson has been ill for some time and has been regularly in and out of hospital, after the message from his family below now is the time to pop over to his Facebook page and let Ian know how much his work has meant to you and share your stories of Ian to help keep his spirits up
**Update from the Vigil of Ian's bedside**
It looks that Ian is in the last hours before he starts his new adventure.
Luke and I have been reading all your messages and memories on all of the groups, private messages to luke and I, and on Ians goodbye post. You have given us strength and made us smile. We have found it very comforting. We have taken turns reading out as many as we can to Ian.
Ian has previously expressed many times how amazing you all are and how much he loves you all. He is comfortable and has settled to have a rest. He is saving up the energy for his new adventure amongst the stars and to join Halo starting a new chapter in their story. I have a sneaking suspicion that they will find that they live forever as true legends never die.
Love to you all, we are eternally greatful.
Not on Facebook so just found out here.
Absolutely heartbreaking.
So, so sorry to hear this.
from the Imagination of Ian Gibson facebook group, posted around noon today.

Hi All
I've been asked to share by Ian's family:
'Ian is now under sedation and his wishes are to remain this way for the time that remains.
We'd like to thank everyone for their kind messages and all were read to Ian whilst he was awake.'
I'm sure each message provided a special feeling and I'd like to share something Ian said but long ago that sums up the humour we all witnessed though his work and knowing him.
'I'm not very good at this dying thing'
What a legend😁
I'm always reminded at times like this of a favourite quote
Don't cry because it's over
Smile because it happened
❤️
Steve
This is heartbreaking.
Would it be crass of me to ask if someone could share "Ian's goodbye post" here so us non-Facebookers can read it?

Thank you for all the joy your work brought into my life.
Very sad, such a talent. Will leave a legacy so much more than most.
Thank you Ian Gibson.

Thanks Ian Gibson :'(
An artist whose work helped light up my childhood and stayed with me.
Thank you, sir.
A core part of what made 2000 AD such a joy to read when I was a kid. Without his art, whither the comic we still enjoy today?
Ian, you'll rightly take your place in history as a true iconic creator, and one that helped to set the standard for greatness. Comics artists will be inspired by you for hundreds of years.
And personally speaking, you made an undescribably huge impact on my childhood and I'll read Halo Jones again and again for the rest of my life.
Be safe on your travels, my friend - you'll always be with us.
Dreadfully sad news, this.
What an incredible and unique talent, unforgettable really. Thanks Ian.
Not a Facebooker either, just got the sad news here.
An immense and unique talent - thank you, Ian.
One of the great, distinctive creators who made 2000AD stand out from all the rest.
It's easy to point to Dredd as done by wonderful artists like Bolland, Dillon, and Ron Smith... but then you have someone like Gibson whose style was so different to their realism, and yet still absolutely, 100% Dredd.
Regards,
Robin
Awful news. Ian Gibson's distinctive style was unique on Judge Dredd, Halo Jones or Robo-Hunter—a damn shame. Another legend becomes immortal, so condolences to his family, work colleagues and all those at 2000AD/Rebellion.
With a heavy heart Ian Gibson's family have announced his passing today aged 77.
That's awful news, always enjoyed talking to him, a proper gentleman and probably my favourite artist growing up, gutted
Another one of my great favourites of 2000AD has passed. RIP Ian, you will be sorely missed.
Very sad news - one of the greats. Loved your work Ian - RIP.
An artist with a style all his own. Even the way he added his name to his work, "Gibson", was beautiful.
RIP Ian Gibson, and thanks.
So, so sad.
My love to all who knew and loved him.
His work is eternal.

I can only echo what has already been said.Robohunter was one of my faves.
RIP
A real loss to art, not just in the comicsphere, but as a whole across all mediums. Truly one of the best to ever pick up a pencil and just go with it, and no amount of words can convey how many readers of the prog have been changed for the better as a result of his works.
May he rest well.
Genuinely distraught. When I was a younger man who hadn't yet realised he wasn't particularly good at drawing, Ian Gibson was my favourite of all the Dredd artists - and still is, by and large. His work was magnificent, not just for its angular lines but his absolutely masterful expressions and staging.
I used to be constantly amazed at how much he could get across with so little ink. My favourite of his Dredds were the Taxidermist and Love Story, but I don't think he ever did a story I didn't find myself immediately caught by. Halo Jones proved just how good he was at catching nuanced, careful progression in a character's ageing, and increasingly wayworn expressions, too.
I don't think there'll ever be such stylish, expressionistic and animated linework in the prog again.
Ian's family have started a "go fund me" campaign to help pay for his funeral and for a special headstone
If you would like to help them with the cost of the funeral and headstone please go to

Up and running for only 7 hours and they have raised over £6,500 for Ian's send off now the more we donate the better the memorial headstone will be

Devastinating loss. I can't stress enough how much his work meant as a young reader and indeed as an old reader. Love his things, his hair and course, he was the best renderer of robots with all kinds of personalities. The more AI comes to prominence in the real world, the closer I believe we'll come to the Ian Gibson verison of Brit Cit. May he rest in peace.
Ian's work on Robo Hunter was what hooked me into buying 2000AD and he is a childhood hero for me and I am sure many others here. I am glad that he got to hear some of the appreciation and respect so many of us have for him before he went.

Same. That strip is what got me hooked on the Prog. It hasn't dated at all either. It was hugely addictive and I could have read it all day every day. Full of magnificent characters so brilliantly drawn. His style so instantly recognisable as well.
Thank you Ian Gibson, you'll genuinely never be matched.

Yes me too, as a 12yr old in 1978, I loved his cover to prog 76 and enjoyed the new Robohunter story starting in that prog. My newsagent never got prog 77 so I missed the 2nd episode which was annoying. Eventually managed to get one from a London comic shop some 10years later. Goodbye and god bless Ian, will miss your unique and distinctive art.
