General / The "L" has fallen off my Judge badge...
30 June, 2015, 12:34:22 PM
So now I'm Judge Gaswell.

Which given my diet, is funny.

But can I glue it back on with araldite?

It's one of those resin type ones from Planet Replicas (or is it Termight replicas?)

And would taking a letter out of your Judge badge make it funny?

(OK, I dropped an S as well to make the joke work)

Events / Anybody in Cal Hab fancy coming to this?
11 May, 2015, 02:43:34 PM
http://cca-glasgow.com/programme/551c166809aa6a6d69000001

Billy and Joe are both very funny and should do a good job destroying Jaws: The Revenge.

Plus it's at CCA which serves the kind of weirdo freak out food I like.

Help! / Tables at Collector mania?
26 April, 2015, 05:57:23 PM
My little brother ( and me) are hoping to have a table at he next Glasgow collector mania in Braehead.

He will mostly be selling his collection of action figures, some still boxed.

Am completely new to this, apart from helping out the odd time with Future Quack and Solar Wind stalls so any hints and tips welcome.

E.g we don't even know if you put away your stock overnight and whether it is worth getting a backing board etc.

I recall loving those giant size Conan's from the seventies but think they might be slightly dated now.

I have a recollection, possibly wrong, that all of the cosmopolitan dusky princesses were teansformed into big breasted blondes. I think I would like to see more authentic depictions of the international beauties from the source text (but keeping the big breasts)

I think I like my Conan clothed and in armour and as a start, I'd like to stay close to the original REH material.

So where should I start?

Film & TV / Why horror? Why gore?
12 January, 2015, 08:52:34 AM
This actually applies to comics as much as film and TV but it's a question I get asked by my wife and apart from "I find it entertaining", I haven't given it much thought.

So what is it about horror and gore that gets us watching and enjoying?  Would the Walking Dead by as scary if they cut away from the bloody gore?

It's not just the presence of it for me - it has to be in good context and well executed. By way of contrast I watched REMAINS - a zombie movie set in a Reno casino that had plenty of gore which didn't enterain me at all and the first ten minutes of DJANGO which had two shootings which I found immensely entertaining. I can't watch all of that Italian horror stuff that - just looks cheap.

Help! / Yorkshire cricket jumper - not wool
12 November, 2014, 12:38:03 PM
Please help.

I've done a pretty exhaustive (ing) trawl of t'internet trying to find a Yorkshire Cricket Club jumper that isn't made of wool but no luck.

Not some fancy one day thing but the classic style cricket whites with the bands at collar and cuffs. You'd think their club website would have them but nope.

I'm hoping that, as is ever the way with these things, somebody googles something slightly different and comes back with an answer within two seconds...

Off Topic / My British Comic Theme Park
28 July, 2014, 12:55:22 AM
Right, I've won the Euromillions and decided to open a static theme park based on British Comics.

You know the sort of thing, where you get stunt and magic trick shows and maybe the odd song and dance number rather than rides etc.

So I'm looking for suggestions for shows. Our imagineers have almost limitless talent and a large budget so just about anything goes. Some shows will be massive spectacles in large arenas, some will be more intimate smaller pieces. Oh and I can afford to buy the rights to any character.

I chose British Comics as theme because I reckon that gives us a short cut to certain character and story types for non-comic fans but also nods of recognition for true fanboys.

So far I have ideas as follows:

Hellman of Hammer Force: Battle for Berlin. I'll ask Garth Ennis to script this and Carlos to do production design. D-Day Dawson and Hellman have to team up to defeat evil Nazis and/or Russians letting off an atom bomb in Berlin. Should be some good scope for epic tank scraps and pyrotechnics galore in our giant arena.

Bash Street School Show: A school review show featuring Bash Street kids, Dennis the Menace, Rodger the Dodger, Minnie the Minx etc.

Flesh: Extinction Level Event. Pat Mills writes the script for this (as long as it just isn't 7 characters being introduced again and again) as cowboys take on dinosaurs as jurassic fracking threatens to destroy the planet.

Any other suggestions welcome and please, we need something from girls' comics.

Thinking about the Spanish fella who recently won the right to have all crap about him expunged (or something), would it be technically possible for all of my old posts to be deleted?.

I want to carry on posting as Tiplodocus but just not have any history before say 2014.

This would raise the intelligence level of nearly every thread I participate in e.g.
Poster #1: Something witty and intelligent
Blank space where my old post would have been
Poster #1: Really? Do you have to say "Knob" at every opportunity?

It would also halve the size of Richmond's favourite thread.

So is it possible?

(I realise this will now cause some nosey parkers to go looking at everthing I ever posted. Yes, i was an embarrassing dick who has learnt from mistakes and the wise example of other posters here. No, really.)

Books & Comics / Tolkien's BEOWULF
28 March, 2014, 02:00:04 PM
http://www.theguardian.com/books/2014/mar/22/jrr-tolkien-translation-beowulf-monsters

Thinking back, I really liked the film adaption from x years ago (uncanny valley and slowness of some movement aside). I thought it was full of wit*, adventure, sexiness, thrills and was a great way of bringing a classic text to life for a modern audience.

Tolkien and his archaic language and love of myth seems like a good match for this as well.

* Though I'm still not sure the hilarious penile obscurement during the main fight with Grendel was deliberately funny or not.

Off Topic / World famous - in a room
18 March, 2014, 01:06:42 PM
I think I just saw comic writer Mark Millar strolling happilly down Sauchiehall Street.

I thought it must be nice to be world famous - but only in a room at a Con or to a select group of people.

(I know the flaw here is in assuming that the ratio of nutters to normal people among comic fans is the same as among the general public).

Help! / Anybody used Music Magpie?
10 March, 2014, 11:31:28 PM
Having a bit of a declutter and have some DVDs to get shot of.

I could ebay them etc but that sounds like hardcwork and time. I think I would generally prefer to use something like MM if it is as easy as It sounds.

So is it? And is the drawback just that you get about a third of what you would if you did it yourself?

Megazine / back on-board
28 February, 2014, 12:34:45 PM
Well, a combination of the birthday Cheap Thrills offer of Megs at £1-49 and being able to buy it on Clickwheel for £1-99 mean that I'm back on board with the Megazine now, albeit digitally.

I have around 24 issues to catch up on.

Zarjaz! Thanks Tharg, your munifecence is boundless.

Events / 2000AD Jock Squad Celebrate the 37th Birthday.
13 February, 2014, 06:16:31 PM
Right, does anybody who isn't too busy shagging or drinking with proper mates fancy having a get together to talk about comics, in particular, 2000ad?

You don't have to dress up like them Southern Softies seem to get off on.

As usual pile in with dates, venues and then excuses.

Mrs Tips fancies coming through to Edinburgh to see the fireworks (all five minutes of them) at Hogmanay.

Needless to say we don't have tickets for the big bash but can anyone recommend a good vantage point to see the fireworks? We'll have Tiny Tips (actually now 13) with us so needs to be family friendly.

Really odd that there appears to be NOTHING on in the West. George Square shuts down at 10pm!

(As if the fireworks I provide on a regular basis aren't good enough. Mind you, they normally don't last for five minutes).

Books & Comics / ADAMTINE by Hannah Berry
19 October, 2013, 05:20:44 PM
I really enjoyed briefly chatting to the delightful Hannah Berry at the Glasgow Comic Con thing and also her marvellous BRITTEN AND BRULIGHTLY noirish detective tale with some outright bizarre elements.

So I picked up this slimmer more tightly focused horror tale as well. Gosh, it's good stuff - genuinely creepy and scary , packed full of claustrophobic atmosphere and pages that reward careful rescanni g. Horror, especially goreless horror, is very hard to do in comics but by golly she pulls it off with aplomb.

And I love her art style and pallette. Would be great to see something from her in the prog or meg.

I'll be watching it tonight at 2015.

What?

Don't tell me you thought...?

For reasons too complicated to go into (but it involves making some old age pensioners laugh), I need a high quality high res picture of Daniel Craig in his budgie smugglers. It needs to be full length so I can use blockposters to turn it into a life size cut out,

But dashed if I can find any decent pics on the web?

What's the best way to search for these sort of things?
