So, the naughties are almost through.

The decade started with a new owner and a brief debate on the relevance of the comic's name; would it start to look out of date if it didn't change? The nineties had nearly done for it,after all. This had to be the decade that 2000ad came of age and I believe it did that in spades.

Like many here, I'm a long term reader (Class of '81) and have seen the good, bad and downright ugly, but a quick inventory of the last 10 years leaves me with a warm thrill powered glow. There really has been some fantastic stuff and the prog is stronger than ever IMO. For example, we're being treated to a Dredd arc which is already a classic and I have a feeling it may irrevocably change the Lawman we know and love.

There's also the possibility of characters branching out into new media; if the standard is as good as the printed pages they will be a deserving success and hopefully raise the profile and standing of squaxx everywhere!

So hat's off to Rebellion, the Tharg's, artists, writers, letterer's, colourists and all ancilliary staff who have brought the thrills back and kept them there - here's to the future (lawman)!

[/schmalts off]

Right then, off the top of your heads, what are the last decade highlights for you lot?

I'll throw in a few to start;

Prog 2000 for kicking it all off
Shakara!
Cabbalistics.

Games / Xbox 360 - three solid reds
19 October, 2009, 05:19:27 PM
Yesterday, my Xbox give me three solid reds and cut out. I turned it off and on again - it worked immediately, however I didn't keep playing.

What do three solid lights mean? From a trawl ont' web, am I right in thinking that if it was flashing it would be RROD? What does non flashing mean? No error message came up,it's a 360 Elite and is around a year old if that's significant...

Cheers,

Off Topic / The Workings of a Fannish mind...

...and how people just don't get it.

Spurred on by recent events at home (next door murder, then house set on fire  :o) I was led to check on all the acoutrements of a life of fandom in my attic. Beyond the boxes of comics are my original Star Wars collection (and some updated stuff) and other various collectibles.

Please don't panic; they're all safe with no smoke or other damage reported  ;)

Anyway, it reminded me of how I was pretty much always of a fannish tendency and how I reacted to people when they made certain statements. So 'The workings of a Fan mind and how people just don't get it'

To start, two common ones that have repeatedly come up since leaving primary school.

Non Fan - "Oh,I used to love Star Wars! I think I've still got my Millenium Falcon at home somewhere"

Fan to self;Well it's hardly the last 17 is it? I have every figure, vehicle, playset, annual, sticker book, Tazo, comic and every single weapon from same having NEVER LOST ONE that I ever had. And I know the names of the vehicles and characters plus in most cases the actors who played them.

Fan reply; 'So have I'

Non Fan - "Oh, do you read the Judge Dredd Comic?"

Fan to self; No I read fuckin 2000ad and Judge Dredd the Megazine and still have every single issue, annual and special I ever owned and know the names of the creators and can summarise and name significant developments in the continuing series.

Fan; 'I read 2000ad, yes'

Please feel free to share your inner fan frustrations - come on! It's good to share!

I thought that seeing as I have resolved to spend more time here, I should do the right thing and politely re insert myself into your conciousness.

Hello all - I'm Mikey and I am catching up on 7 months of paper based thrills and several years of online shenanigans.Anything happen while I was out?

Film & TV / 30 Days of Night
06 November, 2007, 12:51:34 PM
***I think this is spoiler free, nothing more than what a review might say***

Anyone else seen this yet?

I saw it on Sunday night and I thought it was excellent.I think it used the source material well - it didn't try to push it far beyond the comic.Thought the vamp make up was spot on and creepy as hell - Mrs Mikey was completely freaked out by them!

The film maintains it's pace and tension from the word go IMO and doesn't pander to usual expectations.

I loved the aerial track shot over the town with the sporadic resistance just after the vamps have kicked off;it painted a suitably bleak picture as a backdrop to the survivors plight. And I also loved the 'bait' scenes...

On a mild gripe - one in common with a lot of vamp movies - is the lack of dialogue with sub ordinate vamps.OK,so it's not essential, but it sort of annoys me when the 'leader' says something and all the others can do is go 'sssssssssss!' in excitment or anticipation.

Anyway - I'd recommend it.I'm looking forward to seeing it on DVD to see if it holds up.

Gaze,if you dare,at the white heat of research done by physicists!

Superheroes always win because, apparently, they're more socially connected than the villains. Not because the plans for a mega freeze ray/mass mind control/blowing up New York came to naught because of the pesky meddling etc...

Maybe it's just me,but should these guys not be looking for quarks or hanging weights off springs or something?

So,Alan Moore is no longer the footloose and fancy free batchelor about Northhampton.

What next?Comfortable middle age, pottering round the shed and such like?

General / Y The last man?Why indeed.
04 March, 2004, 06:34:17 PM
I have just read book 2 of Y.
Book 1 was bought for me on the strength of Hivemind(tm) recommendation.I thought book 1 was a bit short and was only really getting going on the last ish,so I got 2 to see how it developed

Shite is how.I really thought it was very weak.I felt no attachment to *any* characters,a lack of detail on any level of the story, and the artwork flat.
I didn't like it at all in case you're wondering.
Is anyone reading it at present? Is it deveoping at all?

The Hivemind needs a psyke consult!

How can artwork which is so simple and innocuous looking give a grown man the collywobbles?I refer of course to Armitage, but call to mind Luke Kirby.

Just wanted to say what a fantastic artist this man is.More!Black&white preferably.
