Books & Comics / Matt 'the other' Wagner
18 March, 2014, 06:25:31 AM
I've just finished reading the 40 issue ongoing series of Grendel from Comico back in the day and was going to simply sing its praises over at the 'What I've been reading' thread. Thinking on though having finished it I couldn't help dwelling on how Matt Wagner has a lot of fans on the board (I think) and how he deserves a go at getting a thread dedicated to his work.

Grendel was quite, quite brilliant. When Wagner started the series he hit upon a wonderful way to sustain it beyond the original incarnation of the character. Its one that's been done a lot since but I'm not sure how much before hand? Grendel became an entity that possessed different people, the devil incarnate. Thus this ongoing was in fact a series of ongoing mini-series. It starts with a quite stunning examination of hate, anger and desperation with Christine Sparr hunting her missing son and springs to boundless other ideas examining similar themes from there.

The format enabled the inspired Matt Wagner to really take the shackles off and run rampant with experimentation. As with 2000ad not all of it worked, the vast majority does, but even when it doesn't you're glad you've read it and had the chance to judge. Its really is a fantastic examination in what a comic can do with a core concept, some flexible, open themes and the ambition of a young creative mind not willing to settle for the norm.

Oh and its a bloody engaging exciting read to.

So yeah that's just Grendel. Alongside his work on Mage a glorious autobiography of sorts and some of the best mainstream superhero work out there when he's delved that way I have now decided that Matt Wagner has joined that other Wagner in my top five comic writers of all time. He truly deserves to sit alongside the greats (in no order) John Wagner, Grant Morrison, John Smith and Jack Kirby as the best creators I have ever read and when you think about some of the astonishing talent not in that list (I might start a favourite writers thread since I had some thoughts on this after finishing Grendel - and we love lists don't we!) that is no mean claim.

So yeah if anyone fancies lets all sit down, flex our fingers and type in praise of one of comics greats. Arguably the most under-rated of them all Matt Wagner.

Seems ridiculously early to be starting a thread about titles out next year BUT over at The Beat they've come across listing for DCs trades for the next year! Very good reading it is too, some nice stuff on the way.

http://comicsbeat.com/new-titles-from-dc-comics-fall-2014-and-spring-2015/

Amongst the titles is

QuoteEnigma (New Edition)
Peter Milligan, Duncan Fegredo
On Sale Date: January 6, 2015
$17.99 USD / $20.99 CAD
208 pages Paperback / softback / Trade paperback (US)
Comics & Graphic Novels / Fantasy
9781401251314, 1401251315
Summary: ENIGMA is a thought-provoking post-modern tale of self-discovery and sexual identity told against the backdrop of improbable super-heroes and villains. Michael Smith lives a meaningless life of routine and boredom. But when Enigma, his favorite childhood comic book hero, inexplicably comes to life, Smith finds himself on an obsessive crusade to uncover the secret behind his improbable existence. Teaming with Enigma's comic creator, Smith encounters an insanity-inducing psychopath, a brain-eating serial killer, and a suicide-inciting clown posse as his quest uncovers hidden truths about both his idol and himself. This new edition of the Vertigo classic is written by Peter Milligan (JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK, RED LANTERNS) with kinetic art by Duncan Fegredo (SHADE THE CHANGING MAN).
Collects ENIGMA #1-8.

Now this came out just as I was drifting from comics and like so many other things from my wilderness years I've never go around to catching up with it (also see from the very list above Y: Last Man and 100 Bullets softback editions of which I think I'll be snapping up as well). As this however keeps appearing when people discuss their favourite Pete Milligan work I'm all over this. Looking forward to it.

Books & Comics / Startin' um young
10 March, 2014, 08:43:41 AM
Well by way of an excuse for putting the picture up that will follow shortly and in response to the magnificent work being done by Ming utilising Lego to spread the word to the young I give you this.

Now its not 2000ad related BUT its my daughter dressed as Thorn from Bone for World Book day last week. So what efforts have you gone to go get your little uns, or other associated young people into comics. What with Bone and My Little Pony we have this one in the bag!

Events / Thought Bubble 2014 - Nov 9th - 16th
17 February, 2014, 12:56:41 PM
Seems way to early in the early to be even thinking about this yet BUT The dates and first guests have been announced for this years Thought Bubble.

http://thoughtbubblefestival.com/guests/

Info via The Beat http://comicsbeat.com/thought-bubble-announce-2014-logo-dates-and-first-guests/)

With so many events now taking place in the UK and Ireland these days I should probably be a little retrospect in saying this but surely its safe to call this the premier Comic event in the British Isles?

General / Juiz Dredd Megazine conquers Brazil
28 January, 2014, 09:39:14 PM
Very cool news story over at Bleeding Cool

http://www.bleedingcool.com/2014/01/28/brazil-now-has-its-own-judge-dredd-megazine-and-its-damn-magnetic-for-readers/

Seems material from The Galaxy Greatest is going down well in Brazil. Given that Bleeding Cool ran an article saying that Brazil's biggest title regularly shifts 400,000ish copies that's a big old market to break into. Now of course it seems safe to bet that Juiz Dredd ain't shifting close to those number but this is got to be very good news.

Well done all concerned.

Nice and slick, but not sure its enough of a departure for me. Still we'll see how it settles in.

Books & Comics / Asterix vs Tintin
08 January, 2014, 09:33:33 PM
It appears the debate that once raged only in private conversations has hit the comicsphere's internet public domain.

http://comicsbeat.com/so-are-we-all-agreed-that-asterix-is-better-than-tintin/

Of course there's no real debate as anyone who thinks Tintin is better than Asterix clearly smells a little of poo...

...I'm just devastated that I can no longer call Henry Flint the definitive 2000ad artist for his wrong headed Tintin support.

WHY HENRY WHY DO YOU BETRAY MY LOVE!!!!?????

General / Interview with Guy Adams over at Bleeding Cool
19 December, 2013, 10:47:57 AM
Takes about Ulysses Sweet quite a bit and generally seems like a nice chat. Go see for yourself.

http://www.bleedingcool.com/2013/12/18/the-man-behind-the-maniac-an-interview-with-guy-adams/

Apparently we're getting 9 parts of Mr Sweet. If it carries on as it starts I'm happy with that and hope he gets the second series he has in mind.

Okay so I'm not at all sure this deserves its own thread, but that's never stopped me. This may well turn into a rant too so... well forwarned and all that.

I've becoming increasingly annoyed with the trend* in calling the people who adapt comics and books for telly or film the 'creator' or 'writer of' a given story, which these days seem to be called a 'property' but that's another rant. The one I've seen today is from the BBC the headline is "Walking Dead creator sues TV network"

and of course its about Frank Darabont who created nowt. He adapted Robert Kirkman's creation for telly. Another one that urked me was over at Bleeding Cool which went something along the lines of 'Life of Pi writer does such and such' (he of course didn't do 'such and such' he did a specific, I just can't remember what. Intrigued about what Yann Martel was up to I looked in the article to find of course it wasn't him it was the chap who wrote the screenplay. There's countless other examples.

Now it could be said that Frank Darabont did create something, the telly show, and that this chap was the writer he wrote the screenplay BUT when you look at the antics of Shia LeBeouf lately...

http://comicsbeat.com/did-shia-labeouf-rip-off-a-daniel-clowes-comic-for-his-short-film/

http://comicsbeat.com/pundits-weigh-in-on-lebeouf-gate/

... it brings into focus the need for journalists and other pundits, or even folk like me, I'm sure I'll have made this mistake too at some point or other, to be more careful how they credit people. The creation of a story, or property once someone adapts it would seem is being treated cheaply and dismissively in sections of the media. It would seem the more popular the medium the more the credit for that transcends that of the creator of the piece in a 'lesser' medium (inverted commas I don't believe that for one minute!) and that's beginning to bug the heck out of me and might MIGHT be a factor in cases such as LeBeouf's?

So my question to you. Am I getting my knickers in a twist over semantics, am I just plain wrong, after all as I say in both examples above in its strictest sense the words used aren't wrong or are we seeing careless writing add to the erosion of people's perception of who created stuff?

*This may well not be a trend and might be as old as time its just that I'm picking up on it more now?

Not sure if people have seen this and if I thought about it I should have kept stumm and given myself a better chance of winning BUT there's a great competition over at the Book Depository.

http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/blog/comp/I-Am-the-Law!?utm_source=NL-Body&utm_medium=email-Newsletter&utm_term=Judge-Dredd-comp_banner&utm_content=Banner1&utm_campaign=Newsletter-Mid-Dec-13

Okay so it has the annoying 15 year old line but when they've giving away stuff like this I'll get over that!

Well as some of you might be aware I moved house recently, in doing so I took apart my lovely nerd collection that used to reside in our attic looking a little like this, but documented better else were.

So what the heck is the fate of my pride and joy I hear you cry. Well that is precisely the purpose of this thread. Here in an inexcusably self indulgent reportage I will show you how I transform the 'hobbies' room at the back of our garage from this

To what I hope will be a man cave fit for... well fit for CBR's Comic Porn feature, that's the aim anyway, but that will come in time. Why should you be interested in such nonsense I hear you cry (again), well the title says it all really, its not about you, its about me. Personally if I was you I'd ignore this thread but blathering uninteresting guff full of spelling and grammar mistakes is kinda my specialty around here so I'm going to keep going. After all people seem to find the holiday munching of one board member, who is admittedly far more entertaining that me, endlessly entertaining so why the heck not. There's a host of photos of the progress made to date just around the corner and from then as I get more done I'll post more.

It'll be no match for CF's Cellar but if you want to see the creation of some comic porn this is the thread for you... well at least til I get bored of it all. Its kinda like a 'Reader Wives' making of DVD extra for nerds. If that billing doesn't suck you in I don't know what will!

News / JMS vs 2000ad
05 November, 2013, 08:16:54 PM
This is really quite funny.

http://www.bleedingcool.com/2013/11/05/2000ad-vs-jms-twilight-zones-and-future-shocks/

Now just to make sure we have fun disclosure here its fair to say I'm not really a fan of JMS' comic writing and I've never seen Babylon 5. I've rarely found it (his comic writing) any more than over blown nonsense. 2000ad is my favourite comic ever and I've posted over 7000 times on a forum dedicated to it... so you know it could be said I'm bias and all that... but doesn't this make JMS seem a little silly. Hasn't he rather taken this a bit too seriously? Isn't there an danger in treating JMS as any judge how a story can be told (uh catty Taylor)... anyway as I say I'm bias so decide that JMS needs to cool his boots for ya self.

As it says really.

Gotta imagine that Carl Critchlow is happier with this contribution to Flesh than he was with his previous one. That's a fine cover.

My world's colliding.

Big comic fan (and creator) and all round musical Don Jeffrey Lewis has written a biographical song to celebrate Alan Moore's 60th. 2000ad doesn't get a name check but does get a picture check.

Well of course Rebellion got there first by getting Zenith out this week. Where 2000ad goes the rest follow and so its fitting that Marvel have finally announced Miracleman will be published from start to conclusion beginning January 2014.

http://www.bleedingcool.com/2013/10/12/marvel-to-republish-miracleman-from-january-2014-to-its-conclusion/

What's curious is the fact they've gone with Miracleman rather than Marvelman. Guess its better know by the former?
