Books & Comics / Re: Whats everyone reading?
02 November, 2020, 08:54:30 AM
I'm loving The Three Body Problem myself - I'm part-way through The Dark Forest, but I do see the annoyance mentioned above.  It's a really odd mix of very unusually deep for a sci fi book, workmanlike and plodding.
I'm also t-r-u-d-g-i-n-g through the first of a gazillion 'Shadowrun' books: 'Never Trust a Dragon', which a good friend loaned me why I do not know.  Only irrational completism keeps me going.  It makes me very nostalgic for the early 90s when we were all reading William Gibson and the Japanese were about to take over the planet and be all hi-tech.
Speaking of completism, I'm on an Agatha Christie rampage and am now reading 'Why Didn't They Ask Evans?'; very good puzzle, slightly annoying wacky couple (an attractive aristo woman and a perky non-aristo bloke) are doing the solving.

Everything I know about Cassowaries comes from FDotM, and everything I know about the AFL comes from Squires

You're on the money on both counts.  As you probably know, the Cassowary was so popular he bought it back as Snitty the Psephological Cassowary.  Thanks to Mr Dog, I now know Cassowaries kick trees to make the fruit fall out.

The only one of these I remember is Judge Fear's Big Day Out, which was excellent.  In general, I'm not a huge fan of comics going to prose - it feels like getting the audio sound track to a movie instead of watching the movie, but if it works, it works.  Will check out out.  Great cover.

This cartoon re Marcus Rashford vs The Tories hits the nail on the head, and is funny to boot.

Goooal!

Now *there's* some good political comics. Funny,  punches up, encapsulates reality.

That Squires guy is terrific, I've seen a bit of his stuff.  Am I the only First Dog On The Moon fan here? His humour might be too Australian focussed for you and he does have his annoyingly didactic moments, but when he's good, which is most of the time, he's very good.

My other (no doubt) crap prediction/guess is that Noir's nut allergy will be important later on.  I'm still on the fence about the other ones; they keep saying we haven't seen Noir - Homelander tells us he doesn't identify as any race - ie nobody's seen his face.  Could be a scarred Homelander, could be a black version of him....I dunno.
Yeah, I've been back here (Melbourne) for a while.  I'll never stop missing Japan, but I'm over my reverse culture shock by now.

Why thank you!  I'll endeavour to not need moderating.

That's not the same, but it's very nice.  Thank you.
I will treasure my remaining Jock cups and check out some of the options suggested here.  You're all fabulous.

  If we ever meet at at a con, remind me of this as I owe you a pint.

If we ever meet at a con, I certainly will.  I've met exactly one board person IRL, one Gary W in Lincoln.  Can't remember who bought the pints, but the pub meal was fantastic, and we toasted Tharg and the rest of you.

- Kimiko continues her 'ugly duckling' thing and looks ridiculously good

You're still living in Japan, I'm guessing  ;)  But I agree whole-heartedly.  I was never sure whether the comics version of her was a child or an adult (hopefully the latter for Frenchie's sake).  Can't remember if she had a real name in the comics either; everyone on the show does now.

I'm not sure if the Noir reveal can be the same as in the comic, unless Homelander
is going to spend the next season or two apparently doing all those awful, Crossed-type things he seems to do in the comic.
Which he may well do, I suppose, judging by his very unpleasant rooftop solo scene in which he proves he is indeed
a first-class wanker.
It's a great show and I can't wait for more.  Well done to all involved.

I've been back in Australia for ages, Mr Jayzus.  I'm watching the show with my teenage son who is massively pro-Kimiko.  We're betting on the Noir reveal being the same as in the comics, but really have no idea.

Off Topic / Help out thread; Shakespeare and Co
31 October, 2020, 12:44:18 AM
Hi,

I thought it would be nice to have a thread for businesses which (a) people here might like and (b) which are in extremis and could do with help.

Most such businesses I know of are in Australia and hence not much use to you, but there's one in France that inspired me to post this.  They're called Shakespeare and Company and they published James Joyce's books back in the day.  Apparently they're up against it.  I've just bought something off them, you might like to also.

Film & TV / Re: Last movie watched...
31 October, 2020, 12:37:35 AM
Me, I'm re-watching Ryuzu and the  Seven Henchmen, a  2015 Yakuza comedy from Takeshi Kitano.  Hilarity ensues as a gang of aging Yakuza try to get back in the game.  It's a very Japanese movie, so some of the humour depends on knowing a bit about how the yakuza and associated scumbags operate there.  One thing I like is that it has lyrical filmy moments that are almost Ozu-like.

Thank you, Tordelback, also everyone, you're all so nice! (holds back manly tear).
Needy of Paisley is welcome to it, but I'll write a letter if I get hold of a prog and am feeling epistolatory (if that's the word).

Film & TV / Youtube awesomeness and horrors
14 October, 2020, 11:40:57 AM
There's so much free stuff on youtube, I thought I'd start a thread about it.  What do you like? What's horrendous?

I have two things in mind:

I'm watching a 1970s Soviet spy series called 'Seventeen Moments of Spring'.  It's good, if a little slow moving. Have to get used to the Nazi characters all speaking Russian.

Just after my heart op, I watched ALL of a very awful British scifi dystopian series called 'Knights  of God'.  It's The Future, the UK is run by a fascist theocracy who have exactly two sinister helicopters and a lot of hench-dudes with which to oppress the population. They're run by John Woodvine who's pretty demented.  Also features Patrick Troughton (Doctor Two) in a lion wig, and the bloke from Blakes 7.

over to you, fellow lovers of free stuff...

More prediction-guesses while I'm in the mood:

- Billy Joel cameo?
- brief appearance by Stormfront looking terrible? (more likely than Billy Joel)
- Kimiko continues her 'ugly duckling' thing and looks ridiculously good
- possible appearance of that pdofile version of the X-Men from the comics?

Help! / Cups!
14 October, 2020, 02:02:03 AM
I broke my lovely Mean Machine as drawn by Jock coffee cup this morning.  I regret nothing, because just keeping it around in perfect condition would give me the creeps and I've had years and years of drinking my coffee and thinking' hey, this is cool, I have a Jock Mean Machine cup!'
But I'd love a new one.
Does anyone know if they still make/sell them? Any advice?
I've looked here and on ebay.

yours cup-cravingly,

Floyd
