Games / New 3DSXL
16 April, 2016, 09:35:19 AM
Well I just ordered my new 3ds xl. Will be here on Monday. Came with Spy Hunter (which I am quite looking forward to playing. Even though it's a bit old now I've watched the trailer and it looks like a throwback to old school arcade drivers). I also got Mario Kart 7 so I can play against a friend online and Resident Evil Mercenaries 3D, which didn't get get reviews but still, 3d zombies. and it was cheap.

I can't really afford it, but I'm hoping that it will help with my depression. (having something to do) It will get me out the house even if I just ride the bus and play games :)

Books & Comics / I'm going to jump!
11 April, 2016, 12:33:20 AM
It's finally time to make the leap to digital. After moaning about how much I hate ebooks and how much better a physical book is, I do not have the space to keep buying books, nor do I have the energy to lug them around with me.

So it is time for me to invest in an e-reader. And that is where you lovely people come in. Which is the best brand to go for? I've been looking at the Kobo N250. Amazons kindle is also high on the list. So in terms of ease of use and availability of material/file formats etc... what would you recommend?

Off Topic / Drunken Nonsense
04 April, 2016, 09:23:22 AM
As some of you may be aware, I have wisdom teeth that need removing. But I can't afford it until the end of the week. The paracetamol I've been taking for the last 5 days isn't working as well any more. So it's time for something a bit stronger. So....even though I don't drink any more....desperate times call for desperate measures. So I've just gone and got a bottle of absinthe. Suffice to say I should be rather sloshed very shortly. So rather than spam the rest of the board, I will en devour to keep my drunken ramblings located within this thread. Wish me luck!

Help! / A strange question
29 March, 2016, 04:15:55 AM
Do they have flies in the north or south pole? Because I am sick of the ******* things and if moving to the arctic is what I have to do to get away from the bloody things then so be it!

Yes I know a can of raid is cheaper but it makes the house smell, plus it leaves a sticky residue over things in its path.

Why do I need a life sized alien egg? Well it is Easter I suppose. Does it serve any practical use? No. Do I still want it. Hell yes!

Film & TV / 4k or not?
20 March, 2016, 08:21:19 AM
Anyone here got 4k yet? I've been following the reviews on blu-ray.com and some of them are pretty disappointing. Seems that the computer effects in Mad Max Fury Road (in particular the fire effects) have ended up looking quite fake in the 4k transfer. Also the latest xmen film has been plagued with "artificial and cartoonish" vfx on its 4k disc.

Is 4k too much? Does anyone really notice a difference from normal bluray? Right now I'm not at all inclined to take the leap to 4k. I'd like to know what everyone else thinks about 4k.

Games / The future is (almost) here
20 March, 2016, 08:15:06 AM
Virtual reality. Finally it's become a reality. (ha)

So I was planning on buying myself a ps4 since I haven't had a console since my xbox 360 broke well over a year ago.

But suddenly I'm hearing all about this Playstation VR thing and so I'm thinking I might hold off and save my money til it's here.

Is anyone else excited for virtual reality gaming? Or is it just another gimmick like 3dtv?

Music / Do ya wanna be in my gang?
20 March, 2016, 08:07:36 AM
I was thrift shopping the other day and while browsing the cds I came across Garry Glitter (not like that ya pervs)

And I was half temped to buy it. Well it was cheap. And I did like that song rock and roll part 2

But then of course there is the whole thing of him being a ya know and all

So yeah. I'm not supporting the artist by buying a cd second hand. But I still didn't feel comfortable getting it. Anyone know what I'm on about?

Film & TV / Upcoming filmy goodness
12 March, 2016, 07:29:45 PM
Got any films that are being made that you are excited for but doesn't deserve its own thread? Put it here!

Jack Reacher : Never Go Back

I've never read any of the books but I loved the first film. Saw it at the movie theater on a whim and got real lucky. So I'm quite looking forward to where this film would take the character. And yes it's still Tom Cruise.

Music / Up The Irons
12 March, 2016, 07:25:42 PM
So I've got myself a ticket to go and see The Irons (no, not West Ham United. The other ones) in May. I told myself I wasn't going to bother because a poor student like me couldn't justify $140 even if it is one of my favorite bands. Then I get an email, we have 666 tickets going at $66.66! So I am going to get to see them for the first time ever!

Funny story, I was an Iron Maiden fan before I'd even heard a song. I don't think I even knew they were a band at the time. Someone in my family got me an Iron Maiden sticker book, and the shop down the road sold the stickers so every week my mom would buy me a pack. From what I recall they were of various album and single covers, and lots of Eddie doing cool stuff...

Does anyone else remember this sticker book I speak of?

Off Topic / The Dream Warriors

So I just woke up from a crazy dream. Bruce Forsyth was my lecturer for Bio Science!

I just had to do a google search and see if he is still alive.

Any dream interpreters here who can shed some light on what it means?

Creative Common / This thing in my head
19 February, 2016, 10:15:33 AM
The problem with doing anything when you are drunk is there is a good chance you will regret it. In saying that it fits my idea perfectly.

I don't even know what context this idea works in but hear me out.

There is a person in a room. The room is filled with everything a person would need to survive. A source of food, water and shelter. The room has a single door. If the person goes through the door there is no way they can come back to this room. There is no way of knowing what is in the next room. Does the person stay in the room knowing that they have everything they will ever need or will curiosity get the better of them and they go on the next room.

Let's say they go to the next room. This one is like Disneyland in a huge room, so big you can't see from one side to the other. This room (as of every room) has everything the person will need to survive but this one also has lots of fun things to do.

The person eventually gets bored and goes on to the next room. The next room is in almost total darkness. The ground appears to be moving but upon closer inspection the entire floor is made of live cockroaches, which are also the only food source in this room. The water is just as bad as you could imagine in such a room.

Now, the person hurries to leave this room and continue on to the next one, thinking that it can't get any worse. They go on, and the next room is even worse. NOW, the next room is identical to the first.

Does the person now stay in this room, or risk going forward again and possibly find something much worse than they have already seen (or much better)

Maybe this is some kind of drunken analogy for life? Or maybe I've just watched too many movies. Anyway, it's time for bed. I will just leave this here and see how it reads when I wake up. Goodnight.

Games / Free stuff on steam!
18 February, 2016, 06:28:14 AM
Golden Axe, Jet Set Radio and HELL YEAH! are all free on steam right now! Get em quick cus there is no mention of how long they will be available for.

To unlock the games all you need to do is head to the Make Love Not War Steam page and click "Install Game." It's worth noting that this seems to be different from the storefront's free weekends, during which specific games can only be played for a limited time.

Off Topic / Just because you're paranoid...

By Nicole Carpenter Apple will oppose the Federal Bureau of Investigation's court order demanding the company create a backdoor to the iPhone.

The order is part of an ongoing investigation regarding an act of terrorism in San Bernardino, California, in December—an order Apple CEO Tim Cook described as "an unprecedented step" that "threatens the security" of Apple's customers.

While the government's intentions may be good, Cook wrote, the order has "implications far beyond the legal case at hand."

Using the All Writs Act of 1789 to "justify" the FBI's "expansion of its authority," the government is demanding Apple create a new operating system in which certain security measures are bypassed, and passcodes can be entered electronically—making it "easier to unlock an iPhone by 'brute force,' trying thousands or millions of combinations" at top speeds.

Allowing to use the All Writs Act gives the FBI the ability to "reach into anyone's device to capture their data," Cook wrote.

"The government could extend this breach of privacy and demand that Apple build surveillance software to intercept your messages, access your health records or financial data, track your location, or even access your phone's microphone or camera without your knowledge."

Cook is adamant neither he nor Apple have any "sympathy for terrorists," nothing the company has complied with "valid subpoenas and search warrants." However, regardless of the "different words" the FBI uses to describe the requested tool, "building a version of iOS that bypasses security in this would be undeniably create a backdoor." Once created, it could be a danger to Apple customers around the world.

I don't even know what to say about this.

Film & TV / Annihilation (Alex Garland film)
11 February, 2016, 09:16:02 AM
First I've heard about this, so I thought I'd drop it here. I'm probably behind the times but I didn't notice any posts about it yet so here ya go.

Jennifer Jason Leigh is reportedly in talks to star in Annihilation, writer/director Alex Garland's follow-up to Ex Machina.

The Wrap reports that Leigh would join Natalie Portman, Gina Rodriguez, and Tessa Thompson for the film, which will feature an all-female ensemble. It's based on the novel by Jeff VanderMeer, which follows a group of women including an anthropologist, a surveyor, a psychologist, and a biologist.

Leigh has not yet struck a deal, but sources say she's eager to join after working with an all-male cast in The Hateful Eight.

Ex Machina was a breakout directorial debut for Garland, having gained nods from both the BAFTA and Director's Guild. He is adapting Annihilation as well as directing the project.

Off Topic / Hive Mind Valentines Day Help!
09 February, 2016, 04:40:46 AM
Hello everyone. As most of you non-single people are most probably aware, Valentines day is nearly upon us. And I don't have a scooby doo what to get the other half.

I need actual present advice. Taking her out to dinner and all that stuff I know how to do just fine, but as for an actual gift, buggered if I know.

Any help would be much appreciated. And don't bother asking me what kind of stuff she likes because you probably have just as much of a clue as me.

Cheers

Games / Remeber when games used to be more fun?
26 January, 2016, 12:50:41 PM
Perhaps I'm just getting old but I remember I used to get a real kick out of playing video games back in the day. The idea of racing for what felt like hours only to be knocked off the track on the final corner, spinning into the grass and losing the race followed by throwing the controller on the floor outraged. And all this with 8 bit graphics! Skip forward 20 something years and while my Forza Motorsport has hours of customization options and a shed load of tracks and variations of tracks, they seem to have missed out on adding the magic to the game.

The idea of being able to rewind a race if you make a mistake is outrageous. Yes I know it can be turned off but having it there in the first place is robbing so many people of the emotions you used to feel playing racing games.

Playing through a few hours of Alien Syndicate knowing that if you die, there is no save game. It really is game over man. It added intensity and the game really did feel like it was life or death.

Maybe I'm just being nostalgic but when I see kids playing Fruit Ninjas or Clash Of Clans or whatever I shed a tear for the most of them that will grow up having a completely different notion to what video games are.

In my day you won a game with hard work and learning the damn thing. Now you just pay real money to buy some virtual gems to upgrade your whatever. Games have lots their magic. Thanks for reading my rant :D
