Announcements / Dave Evans, R.I.P.
07 May, 2021, 11:32:09 AM
It's heartbreaking to report that long-time messageboard member Dave Evans -- AKA Bolt-01 -- has died.

Dave was more than just a tremendous friend -- he was exceptionally caring, funny, intelligent, generous, loyal, talented and warm-hearted. As co-editor of some fantastic and influential zines such as FutureQuake, Zarjaz, Something Wicked and Dogbreath, Dave helped nurture many new creators, and he was delighted that so many went on to attain full-time careers in the comics industry.

I first met Dave at a Dreddcon in Oxford back in the early 2000s and we became instant friends. I've never had anything but a fantastic time in his company, and over the years Leonia and I got to know and love his amazing family, too.

I'll write more later, maybe -- this is not easy. Dave was one of those people whose presence just lifted your heart and the thought of not seeing him again is almost unbearable.

So long, Dave. It's been an absolute honour to have been your friend.

Links / The Rusty Staples comics blog!
29 January, 2020, 10:23:26 AM

On Rusty Staples, my comics blog, I take a look at an issue of 1015 from 1996 which features some Dredd-related articles and very early interview with Rusty's better-looking and more talented younger brother Greg Staples, as well as very nice cover by that same droid!

Go on, treat yourself!

(Rusty Staples also has tons of other 2000AD and Dredd-related articles and features for your delectation, including the huge and exhaustively-researched Star Wars in 2000AD feature, so big that it had to be split into two parts! And it's all free! There aren't even any ads on the blog!)

Now on-line, totally free and ready for you to download - the Judge Dredd issue of Journey Planet, the Hugo Award-winning fanzine!

Packed with all-new articles on Dredd, the creators that shaped him, features from the folks behind the Dredd fanzines Zarjaz and Sector 13, plus interviews with Patrick Mills, John Wagner, strips, art, reviews, and much much more!

http://journeyplanet.weebly.com/journey-planet/journey-planet-39-judge-dredd

(Note: if you've already downloaded it, this is version 1.1, with a few formatting errors and typos fixed, and a couple of corrections in the "Introduction to Judge Dredd" section! As a bonus, we've also included a feature that was accidentally omitted from the first version: three graphic novel reviews by David Ferguson!)

James Bacon interviews me on the Dublin2019 blog about Judge Dredd: Blood of Emeralds.

Dublin2019 is a bid to bring Worldcon to Dublin in 2019 - lots of great stuff on the site!

Books & Comics / Razorjack: Double-Crossing
17 June, 2015, 02:38:24 PM

Yes, it's self-promotion time here again! Today I'm pushing the Kindle edition of Razorjack: Double-Crossing - an original novel set in the world of John Higgins' Razorjack.

It's an action-packed horror / science fiction tale with lots and lots of violence and exciting scenes! (Also contains adult themes and strong language, so this one is not for minors or those of a sensitive disposition.)

The book was originally scheduled to be published in 2011 - and indeed there was a limited edition for the launch; about fifty copies were printed - but for a variety of reasons the project never went any further. So I've decided that it's high time there was a Kindle version!

Check it out on my website, which contains all the necessary links for you to buy it from Amazon, no matter where you are!

Events / The European Science Fiction Convention 2014
18 August, 2014, 01:44:50 PM
I'll be appearing at this year's European Science Fiction Convention this coming weekend (22-24 August 2014) in Dublin!

Other guests of honour include Jim Fitzpatrick, Seanan McGuire, Andrzej Sapkowski and Ylva Spångberg. Plus, of course, there'll be lots and lots of other guests (Eurocons tend to only name the Guests of Honour, for historical reasons that escape me).

Do come along - it'll be a blast!

Hi all,

On May 1st my new novel Hunter will be published in the USA! It's the seventh novel in the New Heroes / Quantum Prophecy series, but it's been designed to to work as a stand-alone tale too. To help promote it, I've created a wee video trailer, which you can find on YouTube! Please be kind...  :-\

Love 'n' cuggles,

Off Topic / Irish Comic News Awards 2013
18 October, 2013, 01:03:35 PM
Hey chums,

The shortlists for this year's Irish Comic News Awards have been announced, and voting is now open!

I'm nominated in the Best Irish Writer Published Outside Ireland category, as is our very own Richmond Clements. Now, I realise that's a dilemma: Me or His Lordship, which to choose? We're both equally talented, especially me, and we're both fab 'n' groovy dudes. I'm taller, but Rich has more hair. Hmm... Well, I guess the only fair way is to go in alphabetical order by surname.
;)

Other 2000AD folks up for nomination include PJ Holden, Len O'Grady, John McCrea and Brendan McCarthy (the latter two competing in the Hall of Fame category).

Also: 2000AD and Numbercruncher are up for Best Irish Creator Comic Published Outside Ireland.

Film & TV / The World's End
19 July, 2013, 02:30:10 AM
Leonia and I are just back from a triple-bill of Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and... The World's End! We've always adored the first two (Hot Fuzz is one of my all-time top-five favourite movies), but how does The World's End compare?

I know you're all wondering... Well, we LOVED it! It's an absolutely cracking movie with some really great gags, nicely complex and clever story, and absolutely top performances. Definitely a worthy end to the Cornetto Trilogy - highly recommended!
I could be wrong, but I reckon the king on the placard / shingle thingy outside the tenth pub, The King's Head, has Kevin Eldon's face...
Events / C2E2 - Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo
23 April, 2013, 07:05:05 AM
Well, we're departing shortly for Chicago for C2E2 - the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo, taking place from Friday 26th to Sunday 28th!

If you're there, don't forget to visit stall #1030 in the exhibitor's hall for all your 2000AD and Judge Dredd goodies!

Be sure to check out the website for the live streaming of the panel DREDD and Beyond: The Whole Wide World of 2000 AD on Friday, April 26th, at 19:45 PM (Chicago time: in GMT that's 01:45 on Saturday morning, unless I've miscalculated, which is entirely possible given that I've only had about three hours' sleep). The panel's description:

It's been an incredible year for 2000 AD with the DREDD movie and critically-acclaimed stories such as Day of Chaos, Brass Sun and Trifecta – but what's in store for the Galaxy's Greatest Comic in 2013? Three of our biggest Creators – Andy Diggle (The Losers), Paul Cornell (Wolverine) and Michael Carroll (Judge Dredd) – join Heidi MacDonald from The Comics Beat to talk about why you should be reading 2000 AD right now!

Plus there may be some fairly exclusive - and very exciting - news about forthcoming 2000AD stuff...!

-- Mike
P.S.: Also, April 28th is Leonia's birthday! Please send her lots of presents and / or good wishes. Though presents would be preferred...

Meant to post about this before (and possibly did, but forgot that I did). Cult movie-maker Alex Cox (director of such classics as Repo Man and Sid & Nancy) is running a Kickstarter project to raise $100,000 to make a movie adaptation of Harry Harrison's seminal anti-war SF novel Bill, the Galactic Hero.

There's only six days to go, and the pledged funds are close to the target, but not quite there yet! The project needs your help!

Alex Cox doing Bill, the Galactic Hero - how can that not be something you want to see!?

Books & Comics / Self-promoting: Jennifer Blood #25
12 April, 2013, 12:58:47 PM

Hi folks,

Just wanted to let you all know that issue #25 of Jennifer Blood is (or should be) out now at your local comic store. As of this issue, I've take over the writing duties from the great Al Ewing... Who, by an accident of editorialness, is still credited as the writer. Apparently issue #26, already at the printer's, will feature the same mistake, but I assure you that it's me who's to blame for the story, not Al!

Artwork for this issue is by Eman Cassalos, cover by Mike Mayhew.
