Creative Common / PJ Holden's A4

I've created a little micro 'zine of short nano fiction. It's called A4 because ... well, it all fits on one side of an A4 sheet. You can download it and print it out and fold it into its own little displayable mode, if you like.

General / Ian Gibson How to draw Judge Dredd
25 April, 2023, 01:59:19 PM
Recently reminded that there was a double page spread (likely in an annual) which show Ian Gibson drawing a page of Dredd from a Wagner (or possibly TB Grover script). Dredd is on honkers, firing at on coming traffic (he's facing away from the reader). Anyone else remember this? can the furnish me with a scan?

Creative Common / NI Comics Creator Club
29 November, 2022, 01:18:43 PM
Hi all, I've set up a google groups for people from NI who want to make comics or support those making comics in NI - at any sort of level (from laser printing and hand stapling to high end publishing)

There's a few people in NI doing comics and we're all a bit disjointed, so this is a first stab at trying to link everyone together

https://groups.google.com/g/ni-comics-creator-club

Would appreciate it if you could pass it on to anyone who might be interested.

Film & TV / The Lazarus Project

No-one talking about/watching this?

It's pretty great, sort of high end spy fiction with a ground hog day like conceit but also quite funny and a protagonist who is very likeable even as ... well, you'd have to watch.

it lays out its single sci-fi conceit pretty quickly then explores all the ramifications of it - essentially they can reset time back to the same fixed time point in the year, and the team can remember everything that's happened even as everyone else forgets (some because it's an ability they're born with, others have had a serum)- but, of course, rebooting the planet is very very costly and so, it's a trick they only pull when there's an 'extinction level event'.

I think if you liked Ultraviolet or Slow Horses you might enjoy this.

Events / Enniskillen - June 18th 2022
01 June, 2022, 01:10:11 PM
I haven't seen this mentioned on the board, so either my eyesight is going or noone has mentioned it yet (it'll be my eyesight)

https://www.facebook.com/EnniskillenComicFest/

Anyway, this is coming up, Garth Ennis, Rob Williams, Patrick Goddard, Mike Dorey and Keith Burns and me.

Get your all new Battle Action special right there and get it signed by us!

Also, I'll have copies of the hardback of Stringbags by Garth and Me, and the Lion and the Eagle - this is likely your main chance to get these things signed by the both of us.

I'll also have copies of the full run of Soul Plumber by John McCrea & Me sharing art duties.

(And I will be sketching on the day - pencil head shots, anything more elaborate you might want to hit me up before hand!)

General / The Science of Judge Dredd

BPP posted this else where:

Genuine question - does the lawgiver only eject casings on covers? I'm sure I've seen it before om covers but not that I've seen it in stripwork.

And I took a stab at a legit answer on my blog https://www.pauljholden.com/2021/07/17/the-science-of-judge-dredd/ (where I also talk about how I think Dredd's helmet far from being vision obscuring, probably gives him close to 360 degree vision...)

But basically:
QuoteHere's how I see it: Dredd's gun is essentially a super sophisticated 3d printer. It holds multiple ingredients for building multiple types of bullet.

The device is primed (usually through spoken command, though it will default to smartly identifying the type of bullet) theory: maybe cadets are trained to shout out the bullet type so other Judges can have a better situational awareness. Dredd shouts "Armour piercing"? everyone else goes with Armour Piercing.

(Again, this is very much fan wank – the real reason Dredd shouts out the bullet type is so the reader knows what Dredd has fired...)

Why the shells? Well, the real reason is: they look cool. The in-my-head reason is that some of the raw material (but not all) is held in cartridges, and so they eject after they're spent.

The question I have is, is it like my colour printer : where if you don't have yellow ink you can't (for some reason) print black and white. If you lack ingredient X can you still use bullet Y that doesn't use it, or is the gun out of ammo?

I suspect some ingredients are common to all bullet types (projectile types? is bullet the right word?)

Creative Common / TH Comics Presents: FLY!
05 April, 2021, 11:37:25 AM

My 12 year old son has written and drawn a complete graphic novel called FLY - from his blurb (he wrote the blurb)

Finn is a teenager who works at a trash job in a trashy home but little did he know his life would take a turn for the worst when a speeding car runs him over and he ends up in hell. Since he didn't live a good life he was turned into his least favourite animal, a fly and since he didn't go into the brain crusher he still has all his memories of being a human! Can Finn convince his friend that it's really him and can they find a way out of this mess?!

It's a complete 60+ page graphic novel!

Off Topic / Starting from Nothing...
17 January, 2021, 09:47:40 PM
Was thinking today how odd it is that the entire Marvel film/tv universe was more-or-less kickstarted by Iron Man - a decidedly C-list character who was so obscure that Marvel - when desperate for cash and filling for chapter 11 practically couldn't give the movie rights away, leading to the marvel cinematic universe as we know it.

I've been watching Legends of Tomorrow (the CW tv series, that's basically a DC comics series) and thinking how odd it was that the entire CW tv series was more-or-less kickstarted from the Green Arrow who, presumably, DC couldn't get arrested in a film, leading to his tv success.

So, just wondering, let's play an imaginary game.

For 2000AD the big characters are off the board, you can't have Dredd, Strontium Dog, or indeed anything that has had multi year success in 2000ad - you can have weird one offs, series that were done in one.

What do you pick for your starting from nothing 2000ad universe ... does a Wolfie Smith tv series lead, somehow inevitably to Strontium Dog (via about half a dozen other characters?)

Do you start with Banzai Battallion (stripped of its Dredd world trappings) to get to a Robohunter movie?

What do you start with and how do you get to a Dredd film/tv? (please explain your thinking... :P)
