The planet Pluto was discovered by accident in 1930 by Clyde William Tombaugh.
Pluto is the the furthest planet from the Sun - except for 20 years during its 248 year orbit, when it comes closer to the Sun than Neptune. It is so far away that, from its surface, the Sun merely looks like a bright star in the sky.
It is 5,915 million km away from the Sun, almost 40 times further away than the Earth
