Merry Christmas everyone!!!

I really enjoyed Watch Dogs so was keen to get WD2 and I must say, I've spent hours and hours absolutely LOVING this.

The tone is great; I understand lots of people didn't like the more serious tone and protagonist of WD1 so this time you get a crew of cooler, younger and more nerdy hackers who have some genuinely funny banter - for example there's a great, nerdy debate about who would win between Aliens vs Predator ("Wait... are we talking Ridley Scott Alien or James Cameron Alien?" After minutes of nerdy deliberation, someone mentions that Judge Dredd beat them both - yay!) There are loads and loads of geeky references in the game that should keep us sci fi buffs more than happy! Speaking of tone, and probably because of the setting, it's a very progressive game with same sex relationships, transgenderism and multiculturalism being, quite rightly, a social norm.

Your crew are called Dedsec and are a thin pastiche of Anonymous, giving masked video messages to the masses after you complete larger missions and continue to unearth and expose corporate/political scandals or whatever. The city of San Fransisco is vast and beautiful and chock full of stuff to see and do. The many stories are excellent and extremely relevant, right down to presidential candidate Mark Thruss ("Let's make the Bay Area stronger!"), rigged voting, mind control via social media and so much more. The main bad guys are the cliched Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg style characters who believe that a person's data is now more important than their lives, and we also get to go toe to toe with a Scientology cult as well as the many warring gang factions of the bay.

The hacking is frigging ace. Like the first game you can cause absolute mayhem from a relatively safe distance by piggybacking onto CCTV cameras, hacking grenades on the bad guys' belts, distracting them with their phones, explosively overloading a transformer next to where they're standing and so much more. A great new feature is to send a henchman's ID to a rival gang or the police then either sit back and either watch the resulting chaos or use it as a distraction to achieve your objectives. However, the most fun new features by far are your drone and remote controlled car. The drone in particular is fantastic, allowing you to survey a situation from above, plan your strategy or just drop a load of bombs (which themselves can be remote detonated or triggered by proximity.) The drone adds a good bit of verticality to the world too, giving you so much more to explore. As the world becomes more reliant on mobile technology, the opportunities for mischief increase, so now we can hack into the computer systems of cars and send them crashing into oncoming traffic, drive automated forklifts or tamper with security robots. Sadly, there are no swing bridges in San Francisco, which were my favourite things in WD1.

This game is a blast, offering hours and hours of fun. I can't recommend it enough.

I joined http://www.boomerangrentals.co.uk last week which is like LOVEFiLM or Blockbuster of old. For a tenner a month I get to rent unlimited games, one at a time of course. Over the weekend, I got Mirrors Edge Catalyst which I wanted to play but not buy it as the reviews were mediocre at best. I blasted through it and quite enjoyed it but don't think I would have gone back to it after the main campaign.

I sent it back and Lego Force Awakens should be popping through the letterbox tomorrow, exciting! I'd recommend this service if you have a spare tenner a month...

So, I was listening to the wonderful Mega City Book Club podcast today with Eamonn and Steve Green. Steve mentioned that, while not financially viable, he'd love to see different artists go back and illustrate existing stories. He compared it to musical artists sometimes improving or giving a fresh version of existing songs, nowt wrong with the originals, but sometimes cover versions offer a different take.

So, who would you like to see doing what? My starters for ten, I'd love to see:

Ian Gibson on Nikolai Dante, his beautiful ladies and quirky style would have been amazing on either some of the lighter tales or the Lulu Romanov S&M style tales like the Cadre Infernal.
Dave Kendall does Necropolis, his horror stylings could really bring the horror of Death's masterwork. Thankfully we're kinda getting that in the excellent Tainted.
Similarly, Fraser Irving or Leigh Gallagher on City of the Damned could really add to this chilling tale.

Any more?

When a Cursed Earth dog vulture has a shite, is it white  and liquid like bird shit? Brown and sausage like, like dog shit? Or is it white dog shit like we used to get in the 70s?

I'm sure many of you have seen street artist Snub23. He does rather cool art that very closely resembles the ABC Warriors. I've managed to snag a REALLY cool mask he made that was decorated by another artist called Ryan Callanan (or RYCA in arty circles.)

I am a happy Pete today!

Sadly, it seems Tony Luke, lost his battle against cancer today. Tony's imaginative and totally original style on stories such as Anderson and Nemesis divided the readership, much like the work of the sadly missed John Hicklenton. Tony's brother informed his Facebook followers with this message:

"It is with the heaviest heart imaginable that I have to announce that my dearest and kindest brother ever slipped away this afternoon.
He had a very peaceful end despite the dreadful cancer pain he had been in.
He fought this hideous disease for so many years but his body couldn't take it anymore once the mesothelioma had struck his bone marrow and bones. He even managed to fight sepsis last week!
Apologies that you are hearing this via social media, but we do not have all your contact details to tell you personally.
Heartfelt thanks from all my family for your kind words of support over the years. It has meant so much to us and Tony gained much strength from your messages.
We are missing him terribly already. Love to you all xxxx

"Be yourself. Be creative. Be good to each other. Do wild and amazing things. And never, ever compromise yourself, your dreams or your life for someone or something else. Fight for what is Yours By Right. Time is just too precious for anything else."

His art wasn't for everyone but that's the joy of 2000AD innit?  A sad day indeed.

Aaaaaand the votes are in, counted and verified by a team of highly trained shithouses for the 2015 Message Board Cover of the Year! Let's crack on and see the results in reverse order, firstly, the bubblers who just missed out on a top 5 finish. Hat's off the Henry Flint for his wonderful Lawhorse cover (wish I'd thought of that one for the covers blog,) Cliff Robinson and Dylan Teague for the brilliant Beatcop cover, Nick Percival for his hilarious Quartz masterpiece and rising star Ryan Brown for his cool as you like Dredd. All of 'em were a gnat's wadger from being placed.



So, in JOINT FIFTH place, we have polar opposites of tranquillity and absolute chaos. Tranquillity from returning art legend Ian Kennedy for his glorious cover of end of year prog 1961 and absolute chaos from the mindbending cover of 1957 by Jake Lynch. I like to think both of these covers depicted the same day, or even the same couple of minutes, in Megacity One...





In FOURTH place, it's that man again, Mr Jake Lynch with his painful looking cover of prog 1945. An excellent year for this artdroid, here's hoping for lots more from him in 2016!



In THIRD place, Dave Kendall's gritty reimagining of the fearsome four with his tales of Deadworld cover of Prog 1946...



A TIE for SECOND place - firstly we have superdroid Tiernen Trevallion with his Absolom cover of Prog 1936 sharing the honours with superdroid Tiernen Trevallion with his Absolom cover of Prog 1941. Wait... what!?! There's only one way to sort this out, fiiiiight!





Aaaaaand in FIRST PLACE... for the second year in a row, with his Fiend's Reunited cover of prog 1915, it's Mr Greg Staples. A worthy winner and testament to the skill of this amazing painter and those superb character designs by Brian Bolland all those years ago!

 Is  anyone else playing this? I've just completed it and I have to say it was absolutely fantastic! The setting is excellent and the addition of carriages, boats and trains really add to the experience.  After last year's furore over sexism and the lack of female playable characters at Ubisoft, having two protagonists is an excellent idea, though it would've been better if they were a little more different in their skill sets as it still feels a little bit tokenistic. Speaking of which, the addition of female henchmen(?)  asks some  interesting  questions.  I never did feel comfortable as Jacob (the male protagonist) when I was kicking the shit out of the women. I realise that this is just me, but when does equal opportunity  spill over into misogyny? Or is this more of a violence issue?  To be honest, I couldn't give a monkeys, the game is great!

Moving on, the story is really good, I loved the gangland feel of it as you slowly take over all of the boroughs of London. It also has that LOEG feel with famous people of the time cropping up all over the place.  It doesn't take itself too seriously so there are some excellent touches of humour peppered throughout the game.

They've captured the period brilliantly.  There are children in the workhouses, smoke spewing chimneys complete with chimney sweeps and beautifully rendered versions on the landmarks you'd expect. The many highlights of which include the grimy, ship-filled River Thames, the interiors of Buckingham Palace and the House of Lords, standing atop Nelsons column and the exhilaration of climbing Big Ben.  The contrast between the poor and affluent areas of London is excellent and the game cleverly guides you from the slums to the upper echelons of London as the game progresses.

A word of advice - keep playing  after the final mission as there are a number of bonus missions which are perhaps the most exciting Assassins Creed experiences I've ever had!

A great game, highly recommended by me!
