Off Topic / Re: Comic shop memories

2020 got to start somewhere. It wasn't Forbiden Planet, but some local comic book reseller who opened just one day a week. They had a stacks of cheap trades so I gave it a go.

I found some more sci-fi and it's 2000 AD stuff. I just came across trade paper backs in LCS reseller. I didn't even know this stuff was availabe. I am really so bad with the online search bar methinks.

I picked up:

2000 AD Sci-fi-Thrillers
Aquila
Future Shocks
Grey Area A Long Way Home
Leatherjack
Jaegir
Return to Armageddon
Skizz
Storming Heaven The Frazer Irving (art) Collection.

Bad Company Kano
Bad Company Goodbye Kroll World
The VC.s Your Hit Your'e Dead!
The VC.s Back in Action
Lawless V1
Lawless V2
Lawless V3
Lawless V4
Kingdom The Promised Land
Kingdom Call of the Wild
Kingdom Aux Drift
Kingdom Aplha & Omega

I got Zombo, Tales of Telugath, Savage, Grey Area & Ampney Crucis previous to all the above. Got a load of DC, Some Marvel & Millarworld stuff. Whoa Wanted and I thought Kickass comics were dark & edgy until that one.

Snyder has done anything artistic since Watchmen. If it's ends up like a dumb fun popcorn flick like Aqua-man I will probably see it at some point.

Books & Comics / Re: DC 'Crisis Events'

As a new DC reader I treat everything in isolation. Looking for consistency continuity in DC is a joke for a new reader. Just Batman alone so many variants/variations. Just hunting for the best stories across several characters and JLA stuff.

I have got the Zero Hour Crisis in Time trade, DC Universe Rebirth comic & Blackest Night trade. Crisis on Infinite Earths & Flashpoint is something I am midly curious about, but no real rush to experience it yet.

In terms of interest 80's to 2012 ish stuff I like the most. Earth One was fine & N52 was mid. Not read enough Rebirth to make an informed opinion yet. Reading the points of reset I suppose is useful lore wise, but I am not really bothered how things connect or don't connect.

Quote from: Richard on 19 July, 2023, 01:32:28 AMNope! The Pit was excellent.

The Pit is in the TMC which I have nearly all of. That was one of my faves from that collection.

Quote from: AlexF on 18 July, 2023, 11:03:27 AMLooking at Prog numbers, I'd echo Funt Solo's call of 178-700 (maybe stretch to 712 to get Shamballa in) as the first 'definitive' 2000AD era - but be advised that some sections might feel childish by today's comics standards.

Then I'd plump for 1500-1850 for a second slice of 'definitive', that also feels more grown-up.

Not a bad idea to avoid Progs 800-999... (even if that does mean missing out on Judge Dredd: the Pit)

I get the reference of that profile picture. I just read that book recently one of the 2000 AD Ultimate Collection.

The whole discussion was a very interesting and informative read. Looks like I have got a lot to catch up on for sure.  :)

Ok I read all the Mega Collection I have. Read some Case Files and PSI Files. I got hold of some 2000 AD floppies from 650-ish to 1100-ish with some gaps in between. Just wondering what are the divinitive/peak years of 2000 AD?

Quote from: IndigoPrime on 14 June, 2022, 09:18:55 AMBablet's Carbon & Silicon is a lovely thing if you're into slightly more thoughtful sci-fi as well. I imagine Humanoids fans could give you pointers regarding what to buy from that imprint. Saga over at Image is exceptional and marries SF and fantasy in a manner few other titles can match (and can be found in three lovely hardcover collections if you like that format).

I came across Saga Volume One for a steal of price. So I gave it a go and it was weirldy interesting. Read it it one sitting. Only critque is that some of the framing is to current day. I am intrested to see where it all goes for sure.

Film & TV / Re: Babylon Five Reboot Unlikely.

Quote from: Hawkmumbler on 20 March, 2023, 01:27:01 PMQuestion, is it a prerequisite that I watch Babylons 1 through 4 before finally seeing 5?

Pretty sure 1 to 3 was blown up and 4 disappeared. I don't think we should encourage them to think about prequel ideas. Londo & G'Kar might end up with a human Mikey Spock type sister or something?

What they did to Star Trek I am fine with no reboot of B5. Who is even a safe pair of hands thesedays? Londo & G'Kar epic characters. A lightning in a bottle casting. Good luck trying to emulate that magic.
