Thanks guys for the comments. I really did enjoy sculpting Toby's head and getting a sort of expression. I think Gibson had a thing about "mental" dogs as I remember one in a Robo Hunter story in one of the annuals

I'm glad to see that you are venturing into scratch built creations, no doubt a result of your growing confidence through the experience gained from each piece you make.
Toby is in my opinion your best piece to date. The pose is superb and the actual sculpting shows a huge improvement in your sculptural abilities, a far smoother finish and some lovely crisp details.

I admit I am biased towards your items built or should I say more accurately created from nothing to finished figure.

Now I hope what follows is taken not as a criticism but more an observation and respect to all that you have previously produced and the amount of skill and effort afforded to each piece.

Looking back at your work built over the top of pre-made figures. Sometimes the arms can look a little too bulky and disproportionate, I know this is an unavoidable downside to building on top a pre-made base figure.
However looking at the added detailing of hair, clothing and the fall of cloth all of this looks natural and well implemented, and it is these changes that add life to each piece.

Now looking at the home grown pieces. Calvin & Hobbes, Toby, Rojaws, Gronk & Chimsky. These look well proportioned, posed, balanced, and beautifully executed.

Chimpsky is a great piece, which brings me to the real reason for my tuppenth worth.

I feel that from all you have done to date shows that you are ready to tackle a human figure face and all, despite your previous mentioned uncertainty in an earlier post.

What you are doing is fantastic and I feel that with so many 3d printed figures and models along with digital sculpting software like Zbrush, traditional hands on skills and creations are sadly becoming a thing of the past.
More people like yourself are needed to show just how much can be achieved with just a few tools in hand and a creative mind.

Keep sculpting it's an absolute pleasure looking in every now and then to see your progress and creations.

Thanks for the feedback atp it's always welcome.

It will be next year before I have an opportunity to do another scratch build as my relentless push to do a figure a month for 2023 goes on. I already have the base figures bought and ready for conversion.

It is the details that make the figures come to life and I enjoy making these little additions. I do get a type of therapy when working on these at the earliest stages and adding the clay/ milliput or working with sculpty.

Any projects on going for yourself?

With summer well under way I've been beavering away on a number of creations of our favourite characters. But all these figures need a boss to keep tabs on them. So I had to do this guy. 8th figure of the year is the Mighty Thrag!

He's pondering "what the hell I'm I going to do with this lot!"

My base figure is a 12 inch Yondu. Continuing my policy of the recycling of unused plastic figures going cheap on eballs. A little trimming from the legs, adjusted the arms and adding to his Mohawk, a belt, boots & gauntlets is all I had to do. The paint job should have been easy but yellow on blue makes Green! Who would know? So I had to under coat again with white and redo with yellow.
I'm chuffed I was able to paint on at 2000ad logo above his pocket and it's readable!

The decision I had to make at the start was which jump suit version I should go for. I've plumped for the eighties style.

I hope he keeps the rest and future characters in check.

(atp hope his shoulders don't look too out of proportion)

Before I'm sent to the outer realms of the Galaxy and barred from this board I must apologise to the Mighty one for not picking up the typo and misspelling his name

Please Mighty THARG forgive me I will clean the basement if allowed to continue my work in your honour

You really don't need Tharg's disapproval at our age. Lower back problems, high blood pressure, haemorrhoids, and a Rigellian Hotshot on top of it all?
Yikes.

Nice work as always, Trooper. You really captured his mightiness in the pose and expression.
Why can't everybody just, y'know, be friends and everything? ... and uh ... And love each other!

Thanks guys, I think I lucked out on Yondu's stock expression but I think it's the change of the arms that bring out the "stern thoughtfulness"

Someone's in the running for a Krill Tro Thargo this year

Shoulders are fine just as the whole pose is spot on for the mighty one, (prostrate myself at the mention of his name). The Yondu figure is a perfect fit for Tharg. Am I right to think your base figure was a Titan hero action figure?
If it was the one I think then that would have taken a fair bit of graft to prepare for conversion.

I have to say again, the pose is superb, and the paint job reminds me of the photos of Tharg in the earlier issues of the galaxies greatest comic.

I would just like to also mention that apart from all the effort you put into each piece, your choice of base figure has been carefully selected to be really well suited to each creation.

On that note do you decide on a character first and then look for a figure to match what you have in mind, or do you get a figure and then decide which character it would best suit. Either way you have a great eye for picking the perfect base for each wonderful creation.

Now if you will allow me to have my usual request, roll on next year for more scratch builds.

In the meantime keep up these great creations, I'm enjoying every one.

Ps I have nothing on the go at the moment.
