Title: Rogue Trooper review thread...
Post by: The Amstor Computer on 20 April, 2006, 02:39:14 AM
Two days to go, and with the Rogue chatter picking up I thought it would be useful to have a thread for boarders' impressions of the new Rogue Trooper game.

So, use this thread to post impressions, hints, spoilers & grumbles and let everyone know what you think of the game. Any major story/gameplay spoilers should be well signposted so players further behind in the game don't have events a couple of hours ahead ruined, but otherwise I think we can consider this a RT free fire zone.

Some twit has given the game a one-star "review" on www.amazon.co.uk, based purely on the fact that he didn't like the Judge Dredd game!

Everyone: Check out his review and click on "No" on the "Was this review helpful to you?" section!

Meh. I do wish Amazon would prevent people from "reviewing" games - and other media - that aren't even released yet. I'm just as leery of RT based on Rebellion's past titles - most particularly Dredd Vs Death - but I'm going to put my cash down and play it before passing judgement.

BTW - is "mickwilliams6" in any way related to "Zoe" from the 2000AD newgroup? Inquiring minds & all that... ;-)

There's a link marked "Report this" beneath the review, and if you click that you can vote the review as inappropriate (though you can't explain why, unfortunately).

I suspect that a review is manually checked when a vote threshold has passed, so everyone feel free to make your views known...

i clicked on the "report this" review as well - i suspect if enough people did it, it might get pulled?
Title: Re: Rogue Trooper review thread......
Post by: The Amstor Computer on 20 April, 2006, 04:33:18 AM
Perhaps. As I say, I think a certain number of votes will flag a review as potentially problematic. What happens next depends on Amazon's procedures. If it's manually reviewed by a member of staff, then I'd hope they'd recognise that the review couldn't possibly have been written from actual hands-on experience with the game & that they'd pull it from the site.

Actually, it reads a lot like scojo's handiwork.

"The fact that the game is being released on Xbox and PS2 indicates that style will most likely overrule substance. "

Nonsenscial...

"Rebellion - please look at console games line GTA etc and apply the lessons learnt to your games"

"Talking" to Rebellion, trying to geive them not terribly original idea...

"I'm 'dredding' what they're going to do with Strontium Dog, Slaine, Robohunter. "

terrible pun...

Yeah, I think we can call that a positive ID. Well done Scott, you're a twat.

I've ordered my copy and reported it.  It's such a petty act, and a potentially damaging one at that, that it is pretty unforgivable.  And it's not even a review!
Title: Re: Rogue Trooper review thread......
Post by: Steve Green on 20 April, 2006, 04:43:01 PM
The only reason I can think of for the absence of the logo is that Eidos or Rebellion think that Tooth readers will buy it anyway, and that any mention of the comic might put off the rest of the target market, as being too 'kiddy'

BUMPED with just another day to go. My copy should be waiting for me to pick up after work, but I'm going to watch Silent Hill at the cinema first so I won't get to fire it up until late tomorrow evening.

Quite excited now - just hope the game lives up to expectations!

I found this preview on GameSpot. Gotta say it sounds fairly entertaining, if not particularly groundbreaking. I noted that the reviewer doesn't really know what to make of Helm either...

(BTW I spotted the game for sale on Play.com for what looks like a bargain price for a new game).

Rogue Trooper Exclusive Hands-On - Battle for Nu-Earth
We battle the nefarious Norts in a nearly final version of this comic book-inspired third-person shooter.

Four's a Crowd One rogue trooper plus three disembodied voices equals a whole lot of carnage.
Watch | Download
Just because the Xbox 360 has been picking up steam since its release and Sony and Nintendo's next-gen offerings are looming on the horizon, don't think that every publisher under the sun is done with those old workhorses the PlayStation 2 and Xbox. For instance, Eidos and developer Rebellion are readying Rogue Trooper, a third-person action game based on the comic book of the same name from Judge Dredd publishers 2000AD. We had a chance to check out a nearly completed build of Rogue Trooper recently to see what sets it apart from the rest of the third-person pack.

For starters, you probably won't get the storyline mixed up with those in any other games. Like the comic book version, the game version of Rogue Trooper focuses on a group of genetically engineered supersoldiers fighting against a hostile force called the Norts for control of Nu-Earth, which is apparently where humanity ended up when the original Earth went kaflooey. You play as Rogue, one member of a four-man squad. Each of these guys has a personality chip implanted in his skull, and these come in awfully handy when Rogue's three teammates all meet inauspicious ends at the hands of the Norts. Rogue simply pops out the chip, installs it into one of his pieces of equipment, and next thing you know you've got another disembodied voice egging you on as you gun down wave after wave of bad guys.

In an intense combat situation, four heads are generally better than one.
Eventually you end up with Gunnar installed into your multifunction rifle, Bagman kicking it inside your high-tech backpack, and Helm residing inside your apparently computerized helmet. These three disembodied personalities make for more than just an interesting plot device, though; they also confer a bunch of extra abilities that Rogue can use to waste Norts with giddy abandon. For instance, Gunnar will help you out with a loose auto-aim when you've got your reticle more-or-less centered on an enemy, and you can set up the rifle to act as an independent sentry gun if you need to flank an enemy position. Helm can project a holographic version of yourself as a distraction, and he's even more useful for hacking through security terminals when you come up against an obstacle you can't otherwise surpass.

Those other capabilities are nice to have, but Bagman is the one who will contribute the most to your armament. You can pick up "salvage" from downed enemies, and your backpack has the ability to use this scrap to manufacture ammo for all your gun types, extra grenades, medical kits, you name it. Occasionally, you'll even gain access to blueprints for new weapon or grenade types, which Bagman will also make for you. In fact, aside from salvage, there are no pick-ups in the game--everything will come straight from your backpack. You'll gain new weapons and gear--such as a shotgun, which flattens enemy soldiers with a serious punch, or a scramble grenade, which disables nearby electronics and is useful against enemy mechs--periodically throughout the game, and you're generally getting some new toys to play with every level or so.

There's nothing out of the ordinary about the combat in Rogue Trooper, but it has a solid, tactile feel to it. Enemies drop quickly when you mow them down with your primary weapons, and the grenades produce a satisfying amount of splash damage that sends foes flying with a well-placed throw. You don't have to dash into the fray with guns ablaze, though; the game gives you a respectable amount of flexibility to approach the various combat scenarios in different ways. Your multipurpose assault weapon (the one manned by Gunnar) can also be used as a sniper rifle, so you can pick off enemies from a distance. Sometimes you'll pretty much have to snipe, such as when you're facing off against computer-controlled pillboxes. These will mow you down if you step out into the open, but you can disable them simply by switching to sniper mode and destroying the small sensor located up top.

Making all your weapons and ammo out of scrap salvaged from dead enemies is a pretty neat concept.
There are stealth elements integrated into the combat, too. You can move quietly while crouched, and if you can sneak up on an unsuspecting foe, you can do a one-button instant stealth-kill. Taking out enemies this way will give a bonus to your salvage, though usually you can only get away with stealth-killing one enemy before the rest of them come running. There's one more comical way to take out unsuspecting enemies. It seems the Norts can't tolerate the atmosphere on Nu-Earth, so they have to wear oxygen masks and tanks at all times. If you can hit an enemy's tank when his back is turned, it'll begin to leak gas and eventually explode, which is worth an instant kill and a good chuckle at the same time.

We like what we've seen of Rogue Trooper, with its wide assortment of offensive options and a core combat engine that's been quite satisfying so far. The game even features a four-player cooperative mode that lets you play online with all four members of the original squad still alive and fighting. The game is due out in late May, so look for more information on that co-op mode and more in the coming weeks.

sadly electronic gaming singapore say they where unable to offer a review this month. as no reveiw copies were submitted in time for this months publication.

hope this is an isolated case and not a severe slip up in terms of gaming press mags not able to get their mits on it.
with a slow pert=iod for decent 2nd gen console games, it would be a crying shame.

I've played about half an hour. It's looking good so far. Bit early to make any reasonable judgements but I think we could be onto a winner.

I'm liking the different haircuts to distinguish each G.I. I'm liking the grenade tossing, i'm liking the sniping, and i'm looking forward to different ammo and stuff.

I decided on FFXI rather than this because i fancied an MMO on my 360 and this won't play on the 360 (the xbox is in my lads room on a little telly that my eyes don't like).

I could have got the PS2 version but am going to wait for 360 BC (if they sorted Dredd V Death would be good too!!).

I also thought the price may drop quickly like the last one did.

I would like it just don't really want the ps2 version if it's inferior visually.

Bwa-ha-ha! It's pretty damn good, you know.

Initial thoughts based on playing for an hour before work:

+ Decent graphics.
+ Solid gameplay.
+ The character, equipment & world have been used to create some interesting gameplay mechanics.(Bagman manufacturing & upgrading ammo & equipment, for example).
+ Nicely rendered events & environments from the comic. The Quartz Drop is a work of art in itself.
+ AI is vastly improved over DvsD.
+ Woo-hoo! Look at me! I'm Rogue Trooper!

More (hopefully more sensible) comments after I've played it a bit more...

OK, picked up my copy at lunch & have now clocked 2+ hours & collected the last of my biochip buddies.

I'm enjoying parts of it, but I'm not finding it entirely satisfying. With the caveat that I'm running the PS2 version, here are a few of my thoughts:

-- The general presentation - menu screens, direction of cut scenes etc. - is pretty good. The Nort & Souther propaganda vids are nicely realised, if a bit too heavily influenced by Verhoeven's Starship Troopers and too reliant on comedy accents.

-- In-game graphics are OK. The character models are an improvement on those in Dredd Vs Death, but they still aren't that great for a late-gen PS2 title. Textures are variable, but most seem quite muddy and unattractive even from a reasonable distance.

There are some really clunky moments - GIs dying and falling into the ocean look as though someone turned the clipping off & they've just dropped through a floor - mixed with some nifty effects - the black hole is nicely realised, and the lighting & atmospheric effects are generally very good.

It's not ugly, but it just doesn't look like a late-gen PS2 game that's been three years in development. Perhaps later levels will show it off in a better light.

-- Combat is OK, with some variation in tactics once you unlock other add-ons and your biochips that serve to make it more interesting. For the most part I'm just running & gunning, but there is some flexibility in approach - sniping, stealth kills, using Gunnar as a sentry gun etc. I haven't really been pushed by it yet, and I haven't been caught in a firefight that really excites.

-- I'm going to have to disagree with Noisy on at least one point. The AI may well be improved over Dredd Vs Death, but it's still pretty ropey at points. For example, I've just sneaked up on a group of Norts standing in a row along a platform. I snipe the guy at the far end who's out of their sight & he drops like a stone. I then snipe the second Nort who is standing beside number 3. His tank explodes & the third Nort dashes about for a second or two then returns to his original position. There have been a fair few moments like this, as well as occasions when I've been spotted only for the Nort who saw me to turn away & wander off seconds after shouting a warning. There doesn't seem to be much in the way of intelligence when they're coming at you, either - they dash at you, if you shoot they take cover, then come running out when the firing stops.

-- On the level of minor niggles, the game-stopping cutscenes for stealth/special kills are frustrating. For example: I tried to take out an armoured enemy on the Orange Sea level with a special kill. Two Nort sailors are firing at me, and I dash up behind the armoured trooper & tap X to execute the move. That kicks in a cutscene that plays out as though there was nothing else happening - no music, no Nort sailors - then once its done drops me back into the game. It's obviously not a game-breaker, but it feels clumsy & pulls you out of the game a little more it would if the game carried on while you executed a special move.

Another minor niggle has just cropped up on a mission I'm playing - a hopper is buzzing around above me, so I find a gun emplacement, train it on the flyer and start firing. Nothing happens. It doesn't react, get damaged or start attacking me. It just carries on flying around in its little pattern.

-- The various bits of RT tech are nicely realised. The Hoppers, Decapitators and Blackmare tanks are nifty, and the Norts & their equipment feels right.

-- Weapons so far are a bit basic, but interesting. Rogue's weapons - Gunnar, a pistol, shotgun attachment, frag & EMP grenades - are all fairly standard action game fare, but pretty solid nonetheless. The heavy weapons - gun emplacements, flak cannons, lazookas - are satisfying when you get to use them, though the lazookas seem to only let you target what the game chooses, so I can attack a pair of turrets on a Blackmare, but not the soldiers in the gully below.

-- Music, SFX and voices are nice. The music is very reminiscent of Dredd, but it has its own flavour. There's a nice repeating motif that crops up wrapped into the themes for each level. I haven't noticed any tricks like dynamic soundtracks - changing tempo or key when a firefight erupts, for example - but it's pretty good. The voices are generally nicely done, though there are some pretty iffy accents in there. Rogue & the chips are good, and there's some nice dialogue from Gunnar in particular that fits well with the character from the comic.

-- The female Nort officer (name escapes me) is just as ludicrously big-breasted and tight-uniformed as in the previews, and it really is a little embarassing. Still, as of writing, she seems to be dead, so perhaps that'll be the end of her & her massive Nort cleavage.

-----------------------------

As you can see, I'm a bit torn at the moment. There are some moments - the intro, for example - where the game gets it right & captures the atmosphere nicely, there's some fun combat & some interesting gameplay elements - sentry guns, micromines, salvaging - but some poor AI and occasionally repetitive gameplay (so far, at least), plus a few other niggles, serve to drag it down a bit.

Hopefully the opening missions are just a taste of what's to come, and I'm certainly enjoying it enough so far to carry on through the rest of the game.

SNAP JUDGEMENT - BETTER THAN DREDD VS DEATH, NOT YET A MUST-HAVE

Wils --

Yep, there are subs on my PS2 version, so I'd expect there will be on the PC edition as well.

Art --

They aren't quite what I'd hoped for either, and I find the "sneak up, tap a button, cue game-halting cutscene" a little bit irritating.

I'm now onto Nu Paree, still relatively early in the game as far as I can tell. It's linking in with the comics quite nicely so far in terms of storyline, and I must say I was a lot more impressed with the previous level than I had been with the earlier ones. Hopefully it'll carry on improving & the patchy first impressions won't reflect the game as a whole.

BTW - Gunnar rocks. Some very funny lines from him when you try and equip a silencer, and he's the most useful of the chips so far. Helm's decoy function is useful, and Bagman's ability to build items from salvage is quite neat & adds an appropriate feeling of living off the battlefield to the game.

It is definitely a much better game than Dredd Vs Death, but I still have some reservations and complaints.

TBH, though, there aren't that many games at all that I don't have them about, so you're still making the game sound appealing to me

Aye, fair point.

The more I play, the more I like it, though. Just blasted through Nu Paree and through a great mini-level after that, and I'm just beginning an assault on the wreck of a downed Souther satellite.

The upgrades are coming thick and fast, and each upgrade - shotgun, Sammy, mortar launcher etc. - seems to have multiple levels with the weapon becoming more powerful each time you level it up.

The biochips are really fun, and each has their own character, just as in the comic. Random comments aren't too frequent, but there's enough chatter ingame to make them feel like they're there & not just random names for your equipment.

A few missteps aside, I think Rebellion have nailed the atmosphere of Rogue here - far more than they ever did with Dredd - and my only issues are with some of the presntation & the gameplay itself, and even those aren't game-breaking problems.

Noisy - how far are you in, and what do you think now?

Bit of a weird one as far as the 360 support goes. Upon putting the disc in a message pops up saying there's a download available for that game to allow you to play it(cue sigh of relief), but after that's downloaded and you try to load the game it won't work(cue getting shoes back on to walk to shop once more and trade it for PS2 version)!

My only comment is that the "tutorial" aspects, which at least take place in storyline, seem to stop a bit early.

Thanks for that Keef.

Wierd how it shows on the dashboard to other players (so it looks like you are playing it).

so i guess i have to wait for them to wort BC then.

Bit worrying because they say they do it based on features in game or something. Assuming it uses a similar engine to DvD then if that worked it would be easy to sort.  They haven't got that working yet (it is on the US bt not UK BC list.. stupied for a UK game).

I may rent it next weekend for PS2 then.  Want to give FFI some time first.

Rogue absaloutley rocks.
I love this game.
Multiplayer is also very good, but only three maps?
This could be a great multiplayer if there were more maps and different types of play (death match,CTF etc.)Anyone heard any rumours about updates?

Bought it for the PC, niot having one of those new fangled "games" machines.  Sadly, i dont have a new fangled "pixel shader" compatible graphics card either, despite the fact my computers not even a year old yet...so theres lots of all white fellahs running around, though at a distance you can see em fine - which begs the question, why didnt they ahve pixel shading as an option you could turn off! Even close up, the skins sometimes show accurately, so its possible to get them to show if it wasnt for this pixel shading kicking in - Grrrr.

Still, the game itself seems really good ( when i can distinguish friend from foe!)

So, my question would be, since the game actually tells me I'm fecked before i even play it, there's little chance of holding out for a patch?  Therein lies my dilemma - do i return it knowing its likely not to get fixed?  As a matter of principle, i dont feel like holding onto a game that to me (not being that up on computre games tech) could easily have worked if they hadnt insisted on trying to shade my pixels!  My other matter of principle is to support Rebellion in these releases, so I'm torn people - any ideas, or word from the top, even?

Or indeed recommendations for a cheap graphics card (and i mean CHEAP!) that could shade my pixels....  right - off to kill some Norts... I think!

I had the 'pixel shaders' problem for a while before I bought a new card, not allowing me to play Silent Hill 3 or Lego Star Wars for starters. I managed to pick up a 256Meg GeForce FX5500 for about 40 quid, while not being top of the range by any stretch of the imagination, does the job, at least for now.

Completed it.

By my (rough) count, that's five or six hours, including restarts. To say I'm disappointed by the length of the game would be putting it mildly. I expected to be able to complete it this weekend, but I had hoped for more than just over a night.

The tougher difficulty levels should eke out a bit more, and I'm sure I'll get a bit of fun out of the unlockable cheats, but...

Annoyingly, the ending...

SPOILER

...leaves the Traitor General alive and well, and suggests the possibility of a sequel. I think I would have preferred a longer game that wrapped the whole story up, thanks.

Post by: The Amstor Computer on 23 April, 2006, 04:34:44 AM
Not really. I didn't think I was powering through, or missing much, as the levels are fairly linear. There's still stuff to unlock, but nothing major that I can see - Nu Earth encyclopaedia entries, perhaps some more cheats.

I'm sure some players will take longer, but I felt it was just too short - and at ?30, game length is quite an important consideration.

Skipped the last couple of posts because was worried about spoilers, so forgive me if I'm repeating someone else, but is it not a bit weird that the 2000AD logo is nowhere to be seen anwhere on this thing? Surely at the very least an ad for the graphic novels in the manual would have been a good idea.

As for the game, I'm not that far into it really but loving it. The graphics might not be the most incredible out there but the atmosphere is great, they've captured Nu Earth really well and the banter between the bio-chips is cool. The whole thing's really faithful which is great.
The sound is great too, love the music(it reminds me of Bravestarr which is never a bad thing) and the weapon sound effects are far far punchier than DvDeath.
As for the criticism over the Nort torture lady's breasts, I have to say I'm more than okay with them.
Really want to keep playing but too tired, can't wait to jump back in though.

Ah, it all makes sense now. Was starting to think maybe I'd botched the download or something but it makes sense that it would show up on the dashboard now. Cool. Must say it's a great game, it's a while since I got up this early purely to get some game time in before Miss Monkey wakes up and makes me do my chores. Although if it's as short as has been suggested in previous posts then maybe I should be dragging it out a bit more...

I can see why Amstor was disappointed with the length of the game, as to be fair, on Normal, I've tended to only get killed at the same point once - next time round you know where to get around things.

Therefore if you can avoid getting killed then you're going to be through quite quickly I'd guess.  However I'm still at Nu Paree and don't feel like the end is in sight after a couple of 3/4 hour sessions at the weekend.

Logan/Watcher --

I'm not really a particularly hardcore gamer. I play a fair amount, and there are a few types of game that I'm better at than others, but I'd consider myself a fairly average player.

I also tried not to blast through the game as quickly as possible - I just played through each mission following the objective prompts, taking the time to explore where there was something to explore.

By way of comparison, I've completed a few other games recently - Black, God of War & Shadow of the Colossus. By my rough estimation I put in around 5-6 hours in the first to beat it, and around 9-11 in the others. I was pretty unimpressed with the length of Black, but it does at least have other difficulty modes with different objectives which offers some replay value.

I'm certainly going to try out some of the other difficulty levels - though as far as I can see there's no real difference in game structure or objectives - but I am still a bit miffed at finding the main event so brief.

Just finished the game a minute ago and loved every minute, thought it was a great game. Enjoyed it enough to go back and play it on a harder dificulty which is actually rare for me, but I really got a thrill from the way the story progressed and from the different ways you can approach the levels. Thought the length was pretty standard too, I played it pretty heavily whenever I  had the time off and expected to finish it sooner to be honest.
So yeah, my contribution to the review thread is that I loved it!

So, he can seen eeneis a long way off on the screen as little dots.

If this was in the game, then it should have been one of Helms speical abilites. Just alowing him to be that much more useful.

Unless it's not supposed to be a signature ability of Helm's.

OK, so I'm what I reckon is the last level with the TG in the middle and what appears to be the entire Nort Army raining down on me.

Any tips?

I've set up Gunnar to distract the missile launching Heavy Norts and managed to destroy two of the generators and extended the bridge for a third, but I'm getting hammered by a combination of the Sun Legions and the guys surrounding the TG.

The Holo-Decoy doesn't really seem to last long enough to distract them and I only have the pistol, otherwise I tend to get hammered with missiles from the Heavy Norts. (I'm assuming there is no way to kill those, there's no kill-move and you only seem to be able to use the cannons to destroy them)

Cheers

Steve

The final level isn't actually too difficult, provided you get to grips with a couple of tricks.

You should really avoid with using Gunnar's sentry gun ability and the holo-decoy. Losing Gunnar leaves you with the useless pistol, and the holo-decoy really makes little difference to your chances.

Your best bet is to equip the shotgun and dash for the first switch, knocking out any enemies en route. Get beside the console and cast micromines on the ramp leading up to you. Switch to Sammy mode, then use Helm to get the bridge moving. Quickly knock out the incoming Hoppas, then switch to shotgun if the advancing troops have gotten too close. While Helm is still on the console, get into cover by the wall facing the Traitor General. From here you can pop up to attack oncoming troops with grenades or shotgun blasts. If the way is clear of troops, switch to the mortar launcher. You can use this to knock out the turrets beside the General, and to knock out the the heavy armour (it takes around 4-5 rounds to waste each one). Once you're clear, grab Helm, switch to shotgun and hit the switch over the bridge.

Repeat, but when you're confronted with the Sun Legions try using either the shotgun or the mortar launcher. They move too quickly for a lock-on with the Sammy (even with the upgrade) and you need to get rid of them quickly.

The other key to this level is grabbing all the salvage you can get - you'll need plenty of ammo for your heavy weapons and a lot of medipaks to get through.

Keep calm, take your time and you should blast through to defeat the Traitor fairly easily - on Normal, I took him down in two attempts, and even on Massacre he's not too tough.

Spoiler for final battle:

Actually you can kill those heavily armoured norts. About half a dozen shotgun rounds at close range does the trick. Using a scambler grenade first obviously helps.
Using gunner as a sentry gun really doesn't help in the last level. You already know part of this already since you've done the first two bridges, but when the hoppers, sun legions and snipers turn up, the pistol isn't up to the job. Plus of course the shotgun needed to take out the armour as above. Micro mines are good though, should be laid out at the bottom of the ramp before you put helm on the job. While up on the ramps where the helm interfaces are, you are relatively safe if you crouch. Besides all this, it's the last level. You should have tens of thousands of salvage units. You've only got one bridge left, you could probably do it just by ignoring the Norts and continually injecting yourself with medikits.

OK,

thanks for the tips, guys.

I'd tried launching a sammy at the heavy norts, so I assumed they were indestructible, I'll give them a few blasts with the shotgun...

Cheers

You can take the heavy armour down with a couple of sammies but for some reason they aren't "fire and forget" as they usually are.  You need to stay standing with the green target lock on until you see the sammie heading down towards the armour.

If you lock on, fire then duck for cover they don't seem to hit.

I think I used the mortar launcher for the entire last level, it gets shot of the snipers nice and fast as doesn't need intricate aiming, and after a scrambler grenade 3 direct hits from it put paid to the heavy norts. If I remember correctly once I got to the last bridge I just ran like hell and ignored the chaos around me, think I got lucky!

Will go back and try and complete on the highest setting - more salvage to get ;-)

On another note.  The 3 times I've connected to the Online play the rooms have been totally empty.  Not a good sign...

Yep, 2 or 3 mortar shells will take out a Nort heavy armour. Mortar's good for pillboxes, too.

Sun legions? just hit 'em with Gunnar. If you've got a steady hand, try using the sniper scope. If not, just blast away. They'll come down.

Watch out for the snipers up the towers - pick 'em off with the scope. Same goes for the Gun emplacements.

Duck for cover when your health is low, and activate a med-pack.

Other than that, just keep moving & firing. Don't forget to deploy micro-mines as you go - clears quite a few Norts with very little effort!

Well, I've finished it now... so my thoughts.

Generally pretty good, I think any game coming out at the tail-end of a console's life is going to have a tougher time of it than if it had come out earlier.

The AI seemed fine, and the actual gameplay mechanics offered more variety than say GRAW on the 360 which comes from a larger developer.

I could have done with it being longer, maybe with some more mini-bosses. The ground vehicles were pretty static, and it would have been great to have a larger vehicle as a mini-level (shadow of the colossus-style).

The train was OK, but I think it would have been better to have had Rogue move from one end to another rather than just limited to the gun carriage.

It definitely left me wanting more, just to see what they didn't manage to get in there - bio-wire, the Gasbah, Dreamweavers etc.

I've finished this - playing about half an hour a time during work breaks - and let me tell you, the sentry gun and holodecoy are useful as anything. Especially the holodecoy - looks round corners, lets you prep the scene and then distracts the enemy for some kill-moves. Dead useful.

Post by: Keef Monkey on 04 May, 2006, 02:08:35 AM
Thought the holo-decoy was particularly useful with snipers, send it out into the open and watch for the little red beam then shoot Norty in the face before he even knows you're there. Incredibly satisfying.

Just keep blasting the Traitor's Hoppa.

If you hit him enough times, he'll crashland.

If not, he'll fly around a bit, then escape into an area where a whole bunch of Nort heavy armor dudes shoot you down.
Sounds like this is what you're doing. More shooting the red Hoppa is the key.

I finished playing it on the Xbox a week or so back and loved every second of it... I even played through it again. Sure (as said before), it's not too revolutionary, and I wish it were longer but damn, it's one of the most entertaining games I've played in quite awhile.
It's helps to be a RT fan, too, I think... hehe.
Although a couple buddies of mine who've never even heard of RT absolutely loved the game.

I look forward to a sequel.

It was a damn good effort, but fell short on a few things and feels less than essential as a consequence.  Great fun to play through - it's a lot more fun to play than its closest contemporaries, like the Punisher, or Max Payne.  A bit of refinement through the odd sequel would eventually create a must-have title, but it's quite good as it is.

I don't know how valid this point is but if this is the case the you could possibly also note that the game itself is utterly unique with a whole seperation from its counterparts with regards to rules, storyline etc.

Because it is based on a comic genre it will have comic readers having their opinions of it. The gaming community could possibly be quite surprised by it, leading to the RTG becoming more of a breath of fresh air and fresh challenges. Street shooting games like Max Payne and possibly 007  are perhaps getting a bit old hat. Rogue Trooper could be the Nu Helm. It certainly does not have the same face as other stealth and future war gaming.

I think more advertising should be done through the early feedback. Maybe a couple of demos on complimentary discs?

Anyway I have forgotten my earlier point. I think there is a good essay idea here but for the life of me I cannot continue it.

Y'know I don't get why so many people didn't like the D V D game.  A lot of american critics gave it a bad review, but WTF do they know? They seemed to think it was all about the movie and criticised it's look & feel and gameplay.

I just dug up my copy and installed it again for kicks and it really aint so bad.  I *like* the look and feel.

Not a scratch on RT though, but there are years between them.

For both games though there seems to be an attitude of "if it's a FPS/TPS then it must be just like all other shooters or there is something wrong with it" with no regards to the fact that it is based on already long established plot lines, concepts and style.

I picked this up from GAME the other day for ?20 for the XBOX. (I had a discount on my card so only ended up paying ?7.50)

Must say, it's pretty entertaining. Catches the atmosphere of the strip nicely and has a few unusual gameplay elements to make it stand out from the crowd.

I like the kill moves - after all, you've done all the hardwork working your way round something so it's nice to be able to take your hands off the controllers and relax for a second. Just like the tingle you get when opening a chest in a Zelda game...

I have been playing this for an hour or two now.I spent the first part of the game [battlefield getting the feel of the game.

I dont have any criticisms so far.I like the fact there is a stealth element to the game plus the fact that the Norts weak spot is the oxygen tanks. The action on "Gunner" when fitted with a silencer is beautiful.I dont bother deploying Gunner or holograms.

I am not that happy with the aim/throw action of grenades either.

The Norts AI isnt that good either in the fact that they are a bit stupid which helps the gameplay or doesnt depending on wether you think that makes the game less challenging.

I started on Hard level .Given my experience of these things it actually makes very little difference to the game what level you are on except that you sometimes get unlockables by completeing difficulty levels.

Anyway i have not had a very enjoyable day. However i am enjoying this game so its taking the edge off things a bit.

I had to buy this game on Ebay as i could not find a secondhand copy in a shop anywhere.

double post:  There are some quite clever little things in this game.

I am at the Docks and was up against one of those large automated battle Robots.

Going into each arm of the robot is some sort of hydraulic cable. At a distance i had the idea of using Sniper Scope to shoot one of the cables thinking that it may be a weak spot rather than get too close to it and risk dying after already dying 3 times doing just that.

I didnt find scrambling Grenades to be that effective but i havent got used to the Throw/Aim action yet.

Sure enough it worked and the robot fell to the ground.

I like the fact that the programmers of the game have given things like this some thought

I have got up the Train Level where you have to shoot down the hang gliders and what I think are hoppers or what ever you call them the first time I played thsi game some time last year.

I couldn't get past that level though.

It's still a very good game though.

Thanks to a store in Melbourne called 'Dungeon Crawl' who advertised the game on EBAY along with 'Dredd Vs Death' which is alittle more difficult to play with first person perspective a difficulty on aiming.

Since my Playstation Two is working now, I started playing the games again. I was ina bit of mood the other night. So I was shuffling the games dvd in one by one. I had to find good one to let some steam off with. After getting used to the controls of both games, I realised they are good for this.

So I started playing Rogue Trooper from the start again and I'm was just about finished the level at the sea port right after level where Bag-Man gets killed and Helm is taken alive.

After veiwing Bagman's death scene.

I couldn't but help notice that when this happened the drill tipped transport might have taken his face off if not his whole head. Though there's only a huge gash on his face. ( Huh, dark blue blood....) I thought the censorship board might have a hand this. Then I see later ( As I remember from the earlier time I had played this game....) the full extent of damage done to the traitors face. ( Yes, he 's quite horrible to look at.)

Favorite parts of the game so far......

Shooting the sensors off those automatoned turret guns and using a kill move on them for extra salvage points and also using the kill move when you sneak up behind the Naval Nort soldiers on the docks.

I remember fighting the huge robot things from the first time around also. Though I haven't quite got there yet....

I didn't know that muyself. Might try it.

I hope I finish the game this time around.....

Even cheats in the game don't won't help on the
train level.

It's  shame that your not allowed to pilot any of the vechiles,( The Hoppers, Speed Boats.) except when for when in one of the cut scens Rogue gets Helm to pilot a Hopper while Rogue mans the cannon.

Not really the same as piloting it yourself.

Concerning the abilities of the Gunnar. As a sentry gun. There is one in this game where the Naval norts keep entering one of the inner sections of the sea port. It's probably become the most obivious thing to do....

Placing the sentry gun right in front of the elevator doors. Sit back, put down the controller and take a break while Gunnar does all the work. Though I'm not sure how long you can do this, but those Norts were using the elvator for what seemed long time.

I was wondering if anybdoy has tried putting the Sentry gun inside the elevator. Like I did.

It still works, though sometimes it doesn't hit any of them until they have exited.

It's just very funny seeing it dissappear once the doors shut again.

I also think that Gunnar's has been given the best lines. Mostly shouting taunts and abuse while in Sentry mode. Very funny.

I also like watching how Bagman works, taking the salvage, using the medkit. The animations for the mechanical arms work really well.

The game music was well chosen and very apparopiate to the theme. It's got the heart beat rythymn, that sets the pace for running and shooting. Espeically with the staccatto gun blasts included.

I love this game, but I can't get past the train level either.

Main problem is, you really need to get past the first half of that sequence with minimal damage to the train. If there's more you fail and when you are returned you're on 50%. trouble is I find it impossible to complete the rest of that level on 50%.

Of course I'm probably a bit rubbish...

Well the train I was protecting was half way damaged and there no way you could go back to the point before all the damged occured withoiut playing from the start.

Anyway, I wasn't the Hang-gliders that were givinfg so much trouble. It was Hoppers that pounced on me after coming out of the end of a tunnel near the end of that level.
Title: Re: Rogue Trooper review thread......

I found that while the hoppers were difficult to shoot down , they dont do very much damage to the train. If you shoot down all the gliders as soon as they appear before they get near the train then you should get to the end.

Its the gliders that do the damage.

I suppose i would give this game 7-7.5 out of 10.

The ending wasnt good .It was just a Boss level much like any other game which wasnt what i was expecting after playing at fairly straightforward warfare.

The boss level was the traitor general .

So after all that he survives anyway and the game is left open for a sequel which i have no idea will ever happen.

Great game , shame about the ending.

High points: Shooting the sniper who was firing the poisonous rounds in the high building with the first shot i took.[this being the scene where Venus bluegenes gives covering fire from above.]

I think this was the penultimate scene.

The other high point was killing 2 norts with 1 shot. It was a head shot that went through the head of one Nort and then through the head of another Nort who was immediately behind the first.

There was a problem with the throwing of grenades.I tried several times to aim the throw so that the grenade would go through an open window in a bunker. The grenade would bounce off the bunker and go flying off into the air elsewhere completely off target.

There is isnt a single credit given to 2000ad anywhere in the guide to the game which is a bit odd.Given that ,how many potential gamers who play the game will be totally unaware of where the character came from apart from those already in the know.

I'd call that Rennie learning from GFD's mistakes!  I still fantasise about a Rogue 'epilogue' where we see the TG emerging from the ruins of his Arctic base, and watching Rogue's receding Millicom-bound shuttle before staring down at the remains of his convincing robot duplicate.  You could (just about) allow Horst to remain in continuity, and then have Rogue return to a ruined Millicom, sabotaged by a shadowy figure...

I missed the Gordon Rennie  script credit upon first reading.

I was looking forward to a sort of sprawling battleground on the last level but you always seem to end up in a very high place on final levels in gaming.

There is virtually no cover on the last level and it is definately the most difficult ending to a game i have ever played and possibly the most annoying.

It takes about 8-10 shots to bring down 1 of the larger Nort battlesuit things.

There is a small white slot at the front that is highlighted red through a scope. You have to shoot this about 10 times to succeed.Shooting anywhere but this point **exactly** [the white glowing slot] will result in failure as there are no exposed hydraulics on the larger type.

It didnt try this close up as the effects of a scrambling grenade didnt last long enough.I dont know how you permanently disable one of these close up.

I reckon its a really good Rogue game, I loved it. I'd probably get it on PS2 or Xbox if you can though, the wii version is essentially the same game but with wii-mote controls and all the frustrations that brings. You should give it a pop.

Just £7.99 for the Wii edition on Play.com so there's no excuse for not bag(man)ging a copy.

It's a great little game!

I'd always assumed the TG was probably still active and if GFD had remained on scripting, the shadowy figure hinted at in post TG stories would have revealed him to still be about.
