I see elements of The Killing Joke, which isn't a bad thing.

And speaking of John Byrne- he actually makes a bit of sense for once:

"Perhaps the most bizarre thing about JUDGE DREDD was that they chose to do the Rico storyline, but instead of having Stallone play both parts {Rocky vs Rambo), they cast Armand Assante who sorta kinda if you squint looks a little bit like Stallone.

How brilliant would it have been to have Stallone/Dredd keep the helmet on, and Stallone/Rico walk around with his expensive face hanging out?"

That's probably the best look for a film version these days. Having not seen Batman Begins I still think of Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman, even though that film wasn't that great.

phsycotic looking and damn scary is how I'd describe him, apparently they're going for The Killing Joke style Joker, you know cackling maniacly as Batman beats the crap out of him and that sort of thing.

My big problem with the Batman films is Batman's terrible rubber suits. They more often than not look ok(ish) would are always completely impractical and give him hardly any movement. It looks completely ridiculous every time he looks up for goodness sake, something I assume old Bats would have to do a lot and his fighting always looks really stiff and awkward.

I wish the costume designers would be a bit braver and give him a more fabric-based effort. This would mean, like the comics, he's a bit more vulnerable and has to rely on his formidable skills and training.

Admittedly, it would still be a bad film- just slightly less so.  It was the idea of showing your main actor, while still keeping Dredd's helmet on, that I was really applauding.

To be honest, I could even live with Stallone as Dredd (with a better script of course) if they'd kept his hat on.

The 2 Stallones idea is definitely the way they should have gone once he was chosen, it seems obvious really, and it's the way most fans would have expected it to be. Everything about that film seems to lack logic or even balls.

"My big problem with the Batman films is Batman's terrible rubber suits."

I agree on that. I don't know why for every Batman film they haven't really deviated on the stye and make of the suit. There are differences in the suits of course but they just seem like they were all made by the same production people.

When you think of how successful they were with the Spidey & Daredevil suits and how faithful they turned out, you just wonder if there's a lack of imagination or sense on Nolan's part -and the designers- to go for something different. The whole "mecha" look Batman just doesn't jibe too well. It's more Batman Beyond.

They could have gone for some kind of Kevlar fibre suit or something.

Hang on I don't get it... the white and green is just make-up?  Other than the mouth scars he's a regular Joe again?  Pity.  I love the bit in the (overrated) The Killing Joke where Bats gets make-up on his gloves and realises he's having one of his Arkham heart-to-hearts with an impostor.

And that so is a lawmaster.  Shame!
Title: Re: Joker pics
Post by: VampiraJen on 18 August, 2007, 06:45:29 PM
on the subject of the suit, in the new films they've made the rubber suit a lot more flexible, but i do agree something more fabric based would be a lot more practical for fighting and general movements.  i believe the mask/headgear is seperate from the rest of the costu--err, uniform...  that bit in batman returns where he had to literally rip the rubber mask  off of the rest if the costume to reveal his face was stupid
Title: Re: Joker pics
Post by: JOE SOAP on 18 August, 2007, 07:29:17 PM
I think the rubber suits just look bland from a surface point of view, no matter how you light it, it has very few, if any, real reflective qualities on set. The matte finish is just not very cinematic and is really an attempt to put a false sense of "real world" modernity to the costuming. A foolish idea really when you see the esult.

Bulkiness, too, adds awkwardness, especially around the head and neck area where the cape is joined. I think one of the reasons Bale looks thinner is that he needs to be thinner to be comfortable inside that suit.

I still think this is a great costume, which would actually look fine in a proper film (although thicker pants would be needed to hide his Bat-Bits).

Yeah, very Alex Ross.

That's my fave bat symbol on the chest, I'd love a tee shirt of it. In fact I think I'll print my own!!

Not so keen on the belt symbol or the sock down his pants though.

The Joker looks great, but batman himself looks a bit shit in front of white walls and daylight. one of the best parts of the last film was that you hardly saw him, and when you did it was at night, which made him scarier and more mysterious. He just looks like the George Clooney one again now. Once again they just can't resist tarting up the uniform till it looks like Optimus Prime.
ANyway, I'm guessing it's going to be good regardless. Loved Batman Begins and I think this may wel be as good.

Still a classic look. You stand out from all those longhaired layabouts bigtime. i once painted a picture of myself as the Joker into a mural in a deaf kids' school; i looked a bit of a puddle-jumper in it though.

I'd put it about, '89-'91.

The reason the cardy is date-defying is because, the rest of me bwanas are from Zambian copper-mining families.

And they love their Africa.

S P O I L E R S (for anyone who hasn't read The Dark Knight Returns):

According to Empire, in The Dark Knight Returns, the Joker is gay.  Did I miss that?

(They also says he kills himself laughing too much at Batman, but that's not correct - he kills himself, whilst laughing, but by deliberately snapping his own neck, which has already been broken a bit by Batman. Plus, they attach a pic of DK1 to some blurb about a comic from 1973.)

Been a while since i read it but I do think there are hints that he is gay, or at the very least a bit camp.

I'll have to re-read it over crimbo, long over due a re-read.

Also on the Empire cover pic he seems to be wearing makeup on his face... his hands arn't white.

Actually I've just remembered that Frank Millar clearly stated in an interview that he made the Joker gay in Dark Knight Returns; it 'seemed like a good idea at the time', apparently. I suppose Alan Moore had different ideas, making him married before he turned mental. (By the way, could chemical waste really make your hair green and skin white? And does the joker have a permanent fixed smile in the comics like Jack Nicholson in the early films? Not being smart-arsed or anything, i'm genuinely wondering)

scuse the multiple post but i've just remembered; i used to work in a bronze foundry and it wasn't unheard of for people to have a green tinge to their hair, caused (I think) from the constant inhalation of copper oxide. The joker must have loads of it in him though.

::"Actually I've just remembered that Frank Millar clearly stated in an interview that he made the Joker gay in Dark Knight Returns; it 'seemed like a good idea at the time', apparently."

It's one of those things that happens to me quite a lot.  Like, we were reading this Chekov play at Uni, and the tutors are all like "clearly, the man had syphilis" - even more clearly, their definition of "clearly" was completely different to mine, because I couldn't have told you that the dude in the play was supposed to have syphilis if I'd read it back to front and front to back for months on end - because at no point during the play does anyone say "bad case of syphilis there, Gregori".  In fact, the only clue is that he acts a bit odd, and it's the right century for people who act a bit odd to have syphilis.  Well, clearly.

What I'm missing from The Dark Knight Returns is any clear in-story indication that the Joker is gay.  Not a bit camp, or even as camp as a row of tents (because the Joker's always been that way) - but actually that he's homosexual.  Is there any?
Title: Re: Joker pics
Post by: Buddy on 04 December, 2007, 02:11:49 PM
So, if you don't act like a gay you can't be a gay.

I understand what you mean though... when I do my re-read I'll maybe have a better idea of  the situation.

::"So, if you don't act like a gay you can't be a gay."

Well, that's pretty much the exact opposite of what I said.

My point, really, is that if it doesn't explicitly state what his sexuality is, then how can anyone (apart from the author, who can say what he likes) claim to know?  (Even the author can't claim the information is there if it isn't.)
Title: Re: Joker pics
Post by: JayzusB.Christ on 04 December, 2007, 09:22:40 PM
Fair point. Mind you, i only said it was Frank's statement that was clear, not the graphic novel.  But i suppose if Frank Millar decided he was gay, then he was supposed to be, even if it was impossible for the reader to know for sure. Not a huge issue anyway really, it's not like the joker has much of a public sex life.
