Fast, furious and hysterically funny stories from the pen of Al Ewing (Marvel's Immortal Hulk), chronicling the highs and lows of Judge Dredd, Lawman of the Future. This action packed collection has an exclusive Liam Sharp (Green Lantern) cover.
I'd struggle to overstate how much I enjoy and admire Al Ewing's work [...] A typical Ewing story is technically ambitious, ethically astute, and intellectually playful. In short; great fun. - Sequart

Collecting many of Ewing's outrageous Dredd stories for the first time and featuring an all-star cast of artists, including Liam Sharp (Green Lantern, Wonder Woman), John Higgins (Dreadnoughts: Breaking Ground, Judge Dredd, Watchmen), Simon Fraser (Judge Dredd, Nikolai Dante) and Ben Willsher (Roy of the Rovers, Judge Dredd), this is an essential collection for fans of the Law.

304 pages, apparently, which is pretty chunky. I don't envy whoever had to put that together. Compiling the best of the master's stories must have been insanely tricky.

Yes how hard must it be to design these things with the copy in mind. Anderson and Death getting lost to the back copy as well. They should do it as a dust jacket and have the underside clear of copy, or put it in the endpapers as well.

I've been thinking about the encyclopaedia, and how much my son loves the Marvel equivalent or even just the books on animals etc. It's non-fiction reading about fiction? Anyway, he loves that stuff so I have high hopes that a book with such a delicious cover will fly off the shelves when it's released.

A new epic? 128 page GN (unless it's coupled with other stories) would imply a 20-parter...!
Looks very good. The fact that the trade is 128 pages might include lots of lovely back matter - but yeah either way it sounds like it'll be a long un. Which with John Wagner and Dan Cornwell will be a delight!
Can't wait.
The Dredd story is going to be a 10-part story. This is from an interview with John.
It was also mentioned that Brink will be back early next year so hopefully it will be part of the anniversary prog.

That third page seems to show Dredd shooting at Sov Judges with a Mk 3 Lawgiver. It looks too chunky to be a slender, of-the-era Mk 1. Maybe it's a training sim rather than a flashback at this point?

The previous page suggests to me its the recollection of the bloke in the bed (one assume the fella in an iso-cube awaiting death) and this is flashback.
That suggests the gun in Dredd's right hand is a Lawgiver Mk1 - just how Dan draws it and the gun in his left is just some gun he's got, suggesting the needs must position the Judges are in?
Either way we'll find out when we get there and this looks very exciting!
Occam's Razor: most artists draw characters how they draw them and routinely forget about things like the gun design having changed—or Dredd's many uniform changes.
Just seen a post in reply to a FB thread started by Dan Cornwell. Its 10 parts according to Mr Wagner - though John W didn't know what else would be in the trade.
My punt is hopefully its used as a showcase for Dan's other Dredd work. 'War Buds' springs to mind as a possible fit?

What the hell is

Still, he did co-create it, so it's relevant I guess.

Cheers for the link, I'll have to dig out the old Progs as I can't recall anything about it.
Also, I edited my initial comment, as it seemed a bit mean.
It's mainly a quarter-page strip in the Nerve Centre but expands to a full page in a couple of progs.

His work for 2000 AD in particular was extraordinary and included such beloved strips as future war G.I. Rogue Trooper, the 'Great escape' in space titled Harry 20 on the High Rock, the Star Wars inspired V.C.'s and a gritty 1970s take on the iconic Eagle character Dan Dare.
This collection contains some of Gerry's greatest work on these strips and more. Tight plots, non-stop action and plenty of thrills are here in abundance and highlight why 2000 AD became the stand out comic title in Britain."

This is an absolute must, very exciting! Love that it's an oversized hardback too.
Some great looking stuff coming out. Rebellion are doing a big job on the 45th and really seem to be getting some great stuff out to celebrate. Look like 2022 will be a fun year.
They're saving the Morrison-Millar Collection for the 50th Anniversary.
If we don't get Red Razors in a hardbound, slipcase edition then wtf is the point in any of this?
The MM collection maybe it is better waiting for the 100th birthday bash. We want to folk in the future to know how we felt in the 90s
Perhaps best suited for the 666th anniversary.

Strange one alright.
Think I'll wait for the collected version of the Ennis / Flint strip, that Meg line-up isn't too enticing, and I can honestly say I am shocked by how much I haven't missed reading it for the past 4 months or so.

I'd much rather the next collection of
Third World War. Volume Two stopped just short of the Inspector Ryan story arc, which are some of the best episodes of the entire series. John Hicklenton art too. Followed by Glyn Dillion & Steve Pugh.
Finn will be in the Hachette collection. It's odd how Mills seems to feel like it's a personal slight when some of his work isn't collected. I can't think of another 2000 AD writer whose output has been collected to the same degree by Rebellion.
As for Finn, I know it has its fans, but I have too many problems with the strip to want to revisit it.
Having glanced at Pat's memoir in a comic shop once, apparently his theory is that I cancelled Finn due to my anti-pagan agenda.
In reality I cancelled Finn because it was mediocre, at best.
But, you know, each to their own.
All I know is that I've never seen you dancing naked atop Calton Hill at Beltane, which I think speaks volumes.

I have to admit, I really love these little nuggets of behind-the-scenes gossip. Think it's the small-town Irish busybody in me.
And yeah, Finn wasn't bad, but it wasn't amazing either. Great concept but the stories never quite matched it - too much mucking around on space ships and exposition ('I'm quite into evil, actually') and not enough down-to-earth folk horror.

All the Ickeish stuff in there felt weird at the time but feels deeply off now. But, as David said, to each their own. Some people still like it, I suppose. To my mind, it's a long way down the list of Mills strips.

Right down there with Pat's work on Ivor Lott & Tony Broke, which this squaxx loathed as a sprog. Stevie found it conspiracy theory by the numbers. The Mason-baiting was a pale shadow of the Cythron cosmology in Slaine. Paul wasn't the most sympathetic character in Third World War, but as Finn he was pure teenage boy rock star fantasy.
I am fine with a Fin collection but I also want the third volume of Third World War. Fin for me always felt like a rehash or rather a cheap emulation of Slaine but more in a "modern" setting.

Ooh, nice! Ordered.
YESSS!
I've got the 3 phonebook volumes. I've got the Deviant Edition for the redrawn early stories and the Tomb of Torquemada. I've got the ABC Warriors Solo Missions for Deadlock. I can't justify £40 just to have a collection containing Tubular Hells, can I?
If you can find a cheap copy, Hachette's Nemesis 4 (issue 42; vol 22) also has that strip, along with most of what's in the new £40 book. I'm not sure I'd buy a £40 volume for that one strip, especially if I didn't have the first two.
(The one thing I thought was a shame in the Hachette volumes was Torquemada's Second Honeymoon being in greyscale. Argh. So near and yet so far.)
Tubular Hells was a terrible story that undermined the impact of the last episode of Book X and didn't need to exist.

Yup. It's an okay story in itself, but as you say it
criminally undermines the ending of Book X. Matt Smith asked for a flashback tale, and was as surprised as anyone when Mills 'continued' the story instead.
I didn't know that. Smith should have overruled him.
I dunno. I re-read Nemesis recently and the entire strip undermines itself plenty before that point. It all started to go wrong for me around book 7, despite the great art. X was a mess. Hard to know what Tubular Hells was going for, bar, possibly
Mills realising how abhorrent the original ending was to Seth and rectifying that
.

Someone really should have googled a little more for reference for that Tharg DJ pic. I mean those are clearly a set of 1210s but no one in their right mind mixes by reaching over the needle like that - that's asking for trouble. Flip them 180degrees and you'd have a standard scratch mix setup.
As wags have noted, it's like Tharg is menacingly facing down the reader, who's the DJ, about to spin his own grooves.
I see - so it's Tharg as the annoying drunk requesting entirely inappropriate songs and generally annoying the DJ. hmmmmmm.
Well this video certainly makes the Encyclopedia look pretty cool.

TEETHING TROUBLE!
Having narrowly avoided being wiped from the face of the planet by Munce, Inc., Badrock is now a thriving boom town, predicated on an uneasy peace between the Zhind, the settlers and the Mega-City One Justice Department. Designated a Free Town, the future's there for taking, and folks from all over the planet 43 Rega are flocking to Badrock to begin anew, all under the watchful, disapproving eye of the SJS. Pffft! Old news.
Black Beth is an interesting one. I guess at just 80 pages including the resurrected version, there wasn't much material in Scream, then? I did like that one-shot. Would have given it to the youngling if it wasn't for the back-up strip, and so I'll be interested to see if this book works instead. (I still reckon Tharg should cross the streams occasionally with this stuff. Black Beth's revamped form with DaNi would be a great fit for 2000 AD, IMO.)

I think from interviews with Alec Worley it was just a one-off, one whihc really caught his imagination as a kid. Which is a shame as it would mean for me if I went for this I'd be buying a complete trade for just that one story... I'm still tempted ... but its one to think about whether I can justify.
Agree with Indigo would love to see Beth grace the pages of the prog or even the meg as a new series

Got any Quo?
Scream! was only 15 issues.
Black Beth was originally created for a 1970s teen girls horror comic that never happened but would also have been called 'Scream'. The completed story turned up in the 1988 Scream Holiday Special.

"This collection showcases some of his best-known strips, including instalments from Rogue Trooper, The VC's, Dan Dare and the complete Harry Twenty on the High Rock."
Now that the full line-up of graphic novels has been released for 2022, I shall be picking up the following:
JD Case Files 39 & 40.
Thistlebone book 2 HC.
Lawless book 4.
Brink volume 5.
JD: Legends of the Law.
Strontium Dog - The Son.
The Out book 1.
I am intrigued to see what will be reprinted with 'Strontium Dog - The Son' as everything else has been covered before. Also, will 'The Out - book 1' feature storylines one and two?
What are other Squaxx tempted to buy in the upcoming year?
I'll definitely be getting The Out. A pity there's no HC. Here's hoping enough people can writing begging notes to Tharg to at least get us a webshop exclusive HC.

Amen. I'm starting to struggle a little making sense of how these decisions are being arrived at. It's like the shift to digital only for the Dominion stories. Then we have the Necropolis and Judge Death again. Not to mention Sleeze n' Rider (!) The lack of a hardback for Lawless borders on criminal to my mind.
The Treasury line up is a little disappointing too. The Sarge from Battle (at least in hardback) and Trigan Empire are probably the highlights. It would have been nice to see another volume of Hellman (well, it does say volume 1 on the spine of the recent publication). Even the Mike Nelson "Day of the Eagle" stories.

YES! Thank you, Rebellion!
Once upon a badtime... In these explosive, hysterical comics, Jack the Nipper, Little Miss Muffet and Little Red Riding Hood run wild in chaotic retellings of beloved tales. These anarchic, frenzied comics stories from the pen of Leo Baxendale are the arguably the jewel of the British humour comics, beloved by many for their DIY storybook aesthetic when they were originally printed in Monster Fun. Now, in this stunning new collection, the comics are restored to their full glory, while reprinted in a smaller style to retain the intimate feel of the originals. Crammed with gags and hidden details, these Badtime Bedtime Stories are the perfect late night read for kids and grown ups!

Downthetubes has a combined 2000AD/Treasury list but my browser didn't like it. It mentions we are also expecting a reprint of "Kelly's Eye" (going by a mention in one of the Janus Stark volumes).

Coming to the prog in March 2022:
Incredible SF action from the Eisner-nominated UK anthology! Judge Dredd leads a team of cadets and Citi-Def soldiers through the war-torn streets of Mega-City One in 'The Citadel'; a journalist investigates sect infiltration in Brink: 'Mercury Retrograde'; the vampire Constanta returns in a new series of Fiends of the Eastern Front as he becomes embroiled in the Cold War in '1963'; and Kingmaker, The Order, and Proteus Vex all come to their explosive finales!

Coming to the meg in March 2022:
More action and adventure in the future-shocked world of Judge Dredd! The future lawman comes under attack in the Pan-African enclave of Profundia in Praise Zort!; there's a monster rampaging through Badrock in Lawless: 'Ballots Over Badrock'; Goya's infection continues to spread in Death; there's gang confrontation in Diamond Dogs III; and the race kicks off in 'Surfer'. Plus there's the usual interviews, features, and in the bagged GN Hawk's epic adventure continues from Garth Ennis & Henry Flint!

The last part Matt spoke about a few things coming up:
1. Brink is going to be huge literality being 24 episodes
2. The team that brought us the brilliant A Penitent Man will also bring us a sequel A Honest Man
Yes, six months if Brink with a different point of view sounds just the ticket.
Just saw on the Forbidden Planet website that 'JD: Legends of the Law' (due to ship September 2022) will only feature the first seven issues. Was hoping that it would be complete in one edition.
That would have required an unfeasibly big volume, but perhaps they'll do a second volume if the first does well enough.
Was Legends of the Law any good? I've only read the first story arc (which was OK) but didn't continue reading further knowing Wagner wasn't writing. These show up cheap in dollar bins at shops and conventions but I've not sought them out.

Same here. I bet I end up buying this after years of passing these up from £1/50p boxes!
I've not read the DC Dredds in a long time, but I remember them being of two types. The main DC series was awful—even worse than IDW's "Dredd with a bushy beard" run. The one being reprinted here was... fine? But it doesn't say amazing things that I used to own all these comics yet can't recall anything much about them.

As IP says, the main DC series was pretty bad. The Legends of the Laws series of mini-series was a different matter. However, I only remember two of the stories. The first was a Wagner/Grant story featuring Dredd teaming up with a 12 year-old Cass Anderson, complete with a traditional Wagner/Grant song sequence. I've always remembered it as something convincing enough to fit Prog continuity.
There was another standout story. I can't remember title or writer, but it was illustrated by Nigel Dobbyn and featured Dredd and a vampire. I remember liking it, even though it didn't quite fit with 'our' Dredd. Dobbyn's art stood out.

Robin
Just for the record - this is the line-up of Legends of the Law stories, as originally published by DC.
First two stories are being reprinted in 2022.
Issues 1 - 4: The Blood Donors (John Wagner, Alan Grant / Brent Eric Anderson, Jimmy Palmiotti)
Issues 5 - 7: Trial by Gunfire (Daniel G Chichester / Anthony Williams, Andy Lanning)
Following stories will be reprinted at a future date (presumably, based on sales of the first volume).
Issues 8 - 10: Fall From Grace (John Byrne / Bob Pinaha, Gary Martin)
Issues 11 - 13: Dredd of Knight (Pat McGreal / Nigel Dobbyn, Barbara Kaalberg)
As for the actual stories - I think when IDW had a busy (2000AD-related) release schedule I probably said something along the lines of the main monthly title reminding me of the DC Dredd series (i.e. the writers don't really get Dredd, and the art doesn't really suit either) while the mini-series (often utilising script and art droids) were much more on-point, many of them conceivably passing for main Dredd continuity.
I appreciate all the comments/feedback regarding the DC Dredd series...although I'm game for all most things Dredd, I'll pass on this one (I also skipped Heavy Metal Dredd, based on helpful forum feedback).

Not expecting much, but I will pick up these out of curiosity.
I recall bailing on the DC Dredd stuff after two issues of the Helfer / Avon Oeming series - a decision which spoke volumes in 1994.
That Hefler series was quite something. It's one thing to rewrite the origins of Dredd — we've seen how that can be done well (with the movie). But to turn him into an imbecile didn't exactly hit home.

How many Trigan Empire books are expected?
I think this volume is the last one
I have the first three volumes of Trigan Empire. Although the art is beautiful I've struggled to engage with the story. Normally I plow though a thick TPB (I.e. Dredd case files) over a couple evenings when I'm enjoying it; with Trigan I've gone back to volume one several times and am only half way through. Often stories improve once established (Dredd), I'm hoping for the same from Trigan. Still, I'll get volume 4 to complete the set and will be enjoying the fantastic paintined art.

That is Dylan's colour palette - its so distinctive and he does get a credit.

Have the Cornwell and Teague Droids collaborated previously?
Seems like a perfect match.

Looking forward to seeing what @JumbleCashback does with it all this time around.

A little bird (well the print ad in Meg 441) tells me Indigo Prime is back in the Bumper Birthday Prog, anyone know any details? Kek-W/Bagwell? Ongoing or just a one-off?
I guess it's probably the latter, unless either it's replacing either The Order or Proteus Vex going forward?

Apocalypse War Dossier looks great. I've really been enjoying the 2000AD books. Keep em coming!
There's a couple of fonts they're consistently using for the novels (titles/authors). You can see one example there in the "John Ware" on the Apoc War Dossier. See also the "Judges" line, "Judge Fear's Big Day Out" and the "Fit for Duty?" strapline on Meg 436, etc.
One or two niggles aside, I really like these fonts.
Speaking of "Judge Fear's Big Day Out", I love the Dredd image they've picked for the cover, but one thing has always bothered me about it:
Looking at the sides of Dredd's helmet, you can see that the left hand side - the side closest to us, finishes up roughly in line with his mouth. Dredd's jaw and some of his cheek are visible. Looking at the other side of the picture, the right hand side of his helmet extends down past his chin. Even given our POV and that Dredd may have his head tilted somewhat, there's no way he could cock his head enough that the bottom edge of his helmet should be visible below his chin line.

(It was interesting how much mini-IP, who couldn't give two hoots about football and yet hears about it all the bloody time from the boys she's paired with at school, got into the Rocky of the Rovers book. It's like by having a better gender mix, you can get more people into your stories...)

There have been six series of Skip Tracer in the time since Savage, The Alienist or Brass Sun were last in the prog.
To have so many series in this short period means that it must be "popular" somewhere (I know it is not from this forum).

They certainly weren't finished at the point when it had become obvious that Bisley had just given up all interest in it.

That doesn't necessarily contradict my "years ago".
I know that some writers, like Mills and John Wagner, like to edit against the art; that is, take one more pass at the script once the art is complete to make sure the words match the pictures. If that's where we're at, then it sounds like Clint has finished.

Sad, but not surprising. It has always been hard to separate out the righteous anger and fearlessness that powered his best work from the sometimes dubious company he keeps.

It should be the last one, the grand finale. Maybe the forum does not like it but for its longevity it must have some fans out there somewhere
Does anyone on the forum like it? It's not unusual for a strip to be divisive but I can't recall another recent one met with almost unanimous negativity here. (And that bloody fridging grates in a comic that even 45 years in still has clear problems with gender balance.)
The weird thing with Skip T is its not objectively bad as such, fridging aside, the art is great, there have been moments and even whole stories that are decent and one (the second one) was pretty good.. its just so... forgetable. Nothing in it grabs you and each time you think it might be shifting to an interesting place it drifts away. There have been much 'worse' strips in the comic, but few that leave such little impact. Even terrible strips at least have that, the fact they are terrible and instill something in you.
It reminds me most of Killer. Its as if folks sat down and wrote a list of all the things that can make a 2000ad story work and try to build a series from that, without working out how those individual elements need to piece together to become a satisfying whole. When I reread it recently I really tried to engage with and understand what it was about it that worked and didn't work... but I just couldn't. Even when consiously trying to 'read' it, to explore it I found it slipping past my attention, drifting away and I just found myself not able to pay it the time I was consiously trying to. Then without really realising it I was barely reading it at all and skimming through to get past it.
Such a shame as somewhere there's a decent story in there, a decent setting and a character that could be made interesting (as it got so close to in the second story). It just tries to do so much it completely fails to do anything well.
the strangest thing of all is that i think james peaty is a decent writer. i like diamond dogs. and his doctor who comics are often excellent. maybe the whole problem here is the premise, the pitch? also, comics, for me, as with all storytelling, only work when there is a sense of character and character development. all the characters in skip tracer are mere ciphers.
Quote from: Colin YNWA on 22 April, 2022, 03:50:09 PM
Oh and Hookjaw in the floppie already!
Oh really? Too soon!
I don't think I have liked anything by James Peaty.
Quote from: Colin YNWA on 23 April, 2022, 10:19:19 AMThe weird thing with Skip T is its not objectively bad as such, fridging aside
Honestly, the fridging aside should have been enough to have some alarm bells go off. But beyond that, it's so obvious and cliche-ridden. Perhaps it needs a re-read, but I just don't care enough to do that when there are so many objectively better comics that demand by time.
It must have fans though, because otherwise it would make no sense to keep running new series of the strip. (And I'm fully aware of how a forum can be an echo chamber and not necessarily indicative of what a wider audience wants and enjoys.)
I have wondered, based on absolutely nothing, if Skip Tracer was commissioned as some kind of bridge between Regened and the regular prog. Action-packed, easy to follow at any point for new readers, appearing very regularly, nothing challenging for younger readers (not that I think younger readers can't handle and enjoy a challenge). But who knows. It has felt to me like someone made a list of stereotypical 'elements that go into a 2000ad story' but without the weirdness, wildness, humour, surprise, subversion or off the wall stuff that really constitutes 2000ad. Nice art and colouring, mind.
It doesn't feel much like a Regened story. For better or worse the new and one-off strips that have appeared in Regened issues have tended to be much brasher and high concept, pushing a "this is our cool gimmick, cool isn't it?" in our faces. Space travelling bounty hunter family accidentally restarts ancient galactic war? Cool! Mary Poppins as an amoral high-tech kleptomaniac? Cool! All the plant life on Earth has turned against the human race? Cool!
But what is it about Skip Tracer that's cool? I find it hard even to find the words to sum up a strip that seems so fundamentally generic. The only distinct detail I can remember from it is that it's set in a cube-shaped city and that's entirely irrelevant to anything we've seen unfold in the stories.
It may be a story that's straightforward and easy for kids to read, but it's doing nothing to grab their attention. And it's not doing it for adults either.

Ihave to say I find the use of band or song names in literature a bit of an off putting choice - it feels like the writer is either trying to get you on board because you like the same music / get the reference, or just an exercise in muso - like naming your child after an obscure musician so other parents who "get it" will nod approvingly

On the whole, I'd rather have song references than movie or TV references. Generally, they're just amusing little in-jokes that wash over you if you're not in the know. Whereas references to other narrative fiction are far more likely to cross the line from homage to plagiarism.

Anyone want to take a guess at what songs the stories will be based on, based on the synopses? Knowledge of the writers' musical tastes would probably be an advantage here.

Devlin Waugh in "Too Drunk To Fuck".
UPGRADE ME TO A SCRIPT DROID, THARG — YOU COWARD!
;-)
There's something quite bewildering about bringing back Skip Tracer yet again.
Maybe completely off the mark here, but when it started it felt like an experiment in creating another strip to run in semi-regular rotation a la Dante or Sin Dex, but one which failed to earn the love of the readers like either of those, which makes Tharg's devotion to it rather baffling. Especially as it had reached what felt like a natural ending point. And yet, here we are again.
Please let this be the last one, Tharg. It's had it's run, but it was clear from the start it was never going to be in the pantheon of classic 2000AD stories. Let it go.

It's been confirmed in an interview, I think, that this is the last Skip Tracer story. Or at the very least it's bowing out this year.

Incredible SF action from the Eisner-nominated UK anthology! Also wow! Feral and foe reduced to the floppie! You'd have thought it deserved better than that!
Yeah I for one would have shelled out some £s for a TPB of Feral & Foe. Shame to see if appearing in the floppy so soon as that tends to imply we won't be seeing a TPB any time soon (if ever).
I thought Feral and Foe was much more popular and we will even get a third series.
It also looks like the year will start fizzling out by September and hopefully prog 2300 will boost the thrill-power.
can....we not back to the old ipc days where shit should NOT be reprinted until they are at least five years old? I would have totally bought trades of hookjaw and feral and foe its madness just tossing them out to the floppies
Even if there are issues with schedule slots, that we're now getting a series that's only quite recently been in the Prog is a weird one. Perhaps the floppy is too ravenous and Matt and co. are running out of reprint. I dunno.
Yeah Feral and Foe has been one the absolute best strips in the Prog over the last two years. I was equally surprised to see it appearing in a floppy.
I would probably have bought a trade of it at some point.
I would have thought there is plenty in the Treasury of British comics that could go into the floppy, but I guess they probably require more work, whereas Feral and Foe is probably a quick cut and paste job (relatively speaking).
Is there enough stuff published for feral and for to appear in the ultimate collection
Another vote for a Feral & Foe TPB please Tharg! Even if it's a digital version. Ta!
they're definitely not running out - don't they own nearly all the history of british comics?! and i absolutely loved it when they started using the floppy to reprint weird wonders from way back in the day before thrillpower. more of those please!

That would probably be a bit complicated/unlikely. The copyright to a load of Oink! characters is apparently owned by the original creators, Burp included.
That seems like an argument against creator-owned copyright, in that it actually makes it less likely that stuff gets reprinted.
Corporate-owned copyright also makes reprints less likely if the corporation isn't interested - Metalzoic isn't coming back despite the creators wishes because they don't own it, DC does.
Creator owned titles owned by creators who know how to pitch their reprints to new publishers probably get reprinted more often than equivalent work at publishers not interested in reprints.
Mm. See also Dan Dare Corp, which is sitting on a bunch of stuff that will never see the light of day again. There's also nothing to stop Oink creators licensing a strip to a publisher, but then they'd have to find a publisher that's interested and the deal would have to be viable. I suspect a lot of people suddenly find their IP isn't really worth that much in the cold light of day.
How do the Dan Dare Corporation expect to make any money? Tossers!
Well, from Dan Dare.
Yeah because they're always releasing new Dan Dare stuff all the time.
My guess is that the Dan Dare Corp (and some of the other IP owners who seem to just be sitting on material) refuse to accept a lot of (what seem to be reasonable) offers because if they did accept they'd be setting a price below what they've valued their IP at.
They'd rather bring in zero income and claim it's worth X million pounds than make at least some money but have to admit that they previously over-estimated the value. I'm assuming there's a tax advantage or similar involved somewhere along the line.

if you look at the Companies House info on the rather grandly-titled Dan Dare Corporation, you see its only two personnel have the same surname (husband and wife team, I'm guessing) and that the company address is a private residence in a very leafy part of Surrey.
There's little to no money actually moving through the company, and. yeah, the impression I get is someone just sitting on their IP in the fading hope it might be worth something again as a film or TV property.

Yes. Check out how many of the houses there have private pools, on Google Maps...
So Frank Hampson wanted to kill of Dan Dare he could have just handed it to DDC and the task would have been done
There was a TV show in the early 2000s (CGI, so probably holds up as well as anything CGI around then holds up) and a film announcement a few years back that just kind of disappeared. Though it's theoretically a big IP I'm honestly not sure it's the world really cares that much about stiff upper lip British officers defending the space commonwealth anymore, and if you move too far from that it stops being Dare.

Yeah, Pat Mills now says he regrets resurrecting the character in name only for the launch of 2000AD in 1977, even though commercially, it made perfect sense.
I doubt there are many people under 40 who have a clue who Dan Dare is. Its telling that my first exposure to him was through a ZX Spectrum game, not a comic.
I had the C64 version of the original Dan Dare. It's a very different game from the other 8-bit versions, with a nicely comic book feel. I never did manage to finish the thing, mind.

In reality if people do not know about your brand it will eventually disappear in obscurity. I do not see any new material related to DD so I can not see the brand surviving.
we've had the garth ennis and pete milligan revivals, both of which were problematic in different ways.

i think it was the most hackneyed work of garth's career. usually the master of confounding and shocking writing, in this instance everything is wholly predictable.

Is that the one where Dan Dare gets bummed by the Mekon?
Oh yeah. Subversive.
There was some good stuff in Morrison's Dare, specifically addressing the notion of a hero representing an Imperial ideal whose time had very much passed. Sadly, it felt like Morrison very much ran out of steam well before the end, culminating in the scene you refer to, which absolutely reeks of a writer saying "I can't be arsed with this any more."
how about the manner in which morrison and hughes sharpen their story towards a place where - using the real world experiences of one of the most revered comic creators of all in frank hampson - obvious affection for the character becomes a smart expose of creator rights (or lack of them) in the comics industry of not so long ago? that, i suggest, was subversion. as was the satire, the retro design, the skewering of the jingoistic cynicism that lies behind most political sloganeering, the commentary on what the implications and consequences of apparently throw away comic panels from back in the day would actually be.
all of this was only possible because of our collective preconceptions of what a dan dare entertainment might be.
i think it's still relevant and thought-provoking. and i had never read anything like it before.
(i like it, anyway).
I was going to say that there was a Dan Dare TV series recently, so obviously they are doing something with the IP.
Then I realised that "recently" was actually "twenty years ago".
Oh I went through the exact same process...
So hopefully we can get the next arc this, from Kek-W's twitter:
Why, yes, I am writing a new series of DEADWORLD.
Characters die. Unexpected alliances. Pitiless battles. Double crosses. Reversed roles. Old scores are settled. Judge Death as you've never seen him before!
And a season ending that'll blow your mind.

It's a spin-off from
Third World War in
Crisis. Whether I'd recommend it or not largely depends on your opinions on that strip. I know Uncle Pat is very proud of it, but it's not for everybody.
third world war was right on and progressive and educative and idealistic and exciting and ezquerra.
finn, however, was the kind of presentation that most of the admirable third world war characters would have justly railed against.
Looks like that's the same content as the 1st Finn volume in the UC - which is less than half the price of the webshop edition! This does look nicer and of course your don't end up with the random slice of Hachette spine. In terms of content it's alright but I don't think it's Pat's best. ymmv depending how much anarcho-occultist vigilante takes on evil-corporations appeals. The repro in the UC was ok but suffered from moire in places.

I think it's just named based on one of the contained Finn stories. Rather than being an ongoing series of "Origins" books.
It's curious how, when Pat began collaborating with an actual practioner of magick, the occult elements in the strips became so mundane. Tony Skinner was no Alan Moore or Grant Morrison. The Ickean stuff feels like low-hanging fruit & as such a poor substitute for the Cythron cosmology of Slaine. The whole thing is achingly adolescent.
Not exactly a ringing endorsement! Maybe I will save my pennies and give it a miss...
I was being diplomatic, as I didn't want to put off someone who might actually enjoy it. But I concur with most of the opinions expressed since my last post. It does have its fans, but they tend to be pagans and/or people who agree with its politics, rather than people who are drawn in by the characters and story. Whereas even a non-pagan like myself can enjoy stuff like Slaine or the ABC Warriors.

The title character is a man who (in the
Third World War series) seduces a lonely young woman in order to plant a bomb inside the truck she's driving.
(It's been 30-something years - I'm more than prepared to acknowledge that I'm misremembering that...)

Yeah, Finn is an odd one. The actual idea behind it (magicky (with a k) eco-warrior / taxi driver takes on a modern version of the fomorians) is sound in my opinion, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired.
I still enjoyed it though, for what it's worth. It's faaaar from Pat's best, but it's certainly not his worst either.
Give it a spin, there's always Ebay if it's not for you!

You 100% don't have to have read or even heard of Third World War to enjoy a Finn collection. I'm in the 'totally recommend' camp. It's not as great as early Sláine or Nemesis, and definitely trades on ideas Mills had already used in those stories (the Earth goddess and weird veneration of women mixed with misogyny is right out of Slaine, and the 'opposite sides in a secret war who are both kinda evil' is very Nemesis) but it's plenty fun. Mostly, the character design of the hero in his mask is too cool to ignore, and Mills knows how to script a story so there are lots of great poses.
It's clearly a Marmite strip. At the time, I wasn't a huge fan. When I revisited it, Finn just felt icky. It's not just the misogyny. There are other representations within the strip that now feel troubling to me. And more broadly, it felt like a modern-day knock-off of something Mills was doing better elsewhere. The mask design is good, mind.

I would say 'Slaine mashed into Icke – Origins' getting HC treatment might finally make Mills stop complaining, but given that every single scrap of it hasn't yet been reprinted, it probably won't.
Giving him full ownership of all his 2000ad characters along with a grovelling apology, a million pound bonus and a statement etched on a solid gold plate stating the Pat was right about everything all along wouldn't make him happy

Probably true, but if he wasn't so angry all the time, could he have created something as great as Nemesis the Warlock or Marshal Law or Charley's War? That's a rhetorical question, I honestly don't know the answer.

but yeah honestly not a fan of finn
I like the first two books of Finn. The art was fabulous and the stories were fun. (They were reprinted in the floppies with Megs 329 and 361.)
I remember not enjoying the later stories, but I can't remember why, nor do I recall the stories. Not sure whether to give them another try or not.
I'm a fan and I've ordered the Hardcover.
Also; I'm not a Pagan and I don't believe the world is run by lizards. Cocks, maybe, but not lizards.

I know what you mean, I feel the same way. I agree with him on some things (I do think it's a shame that 2000AD seems to have gone backwards on the issue of creator ownership since the days when they published some creator-owned material like Button Man and Big Dave). But there are a lot of double standards in there (eg "my characters are not house characters, but I envisioned 2000AD as taking place within a shared universe", or "editors in the '90s were wrong to try and make 2000AD more like Deadline, whereas my attempts to make it more like Crisis were completely justified".)

Was Big Dave creator-owned? Morrison may have
claimed it was using the same argument he was using for Zenith, but I don't think it was 'officially' a creator-owned strip.
(I suspect it hasn't been reprinted because it's not looked on very fondly by a big chunk of the potential audience and so any hypothetical rewards from doing it are likely to be small and not worth the possibility of a ruck with Morrison and/or Millar.)
Barney lists it a creator-owned. I don't know what that is based on, but if I recall correctly that site used to be official.

...Millar sent the comic a lawyer's letter complaining about Canon Fodder being handed to a new writer, claiming the character was entirely his own creation. He seemed to have forgotten that Chris Weston co-created the series! Not to mention the irony of Millar complaining about being usurped on a strip, having happily other writers' 2000AD series.
IIRC, an agreement was reached confirming all rights in Big Dave belonged to the creators of that series, while the rights to all other Millar scripted series were assigned to 2000AD...

sort of right, in as much as Big Dave wasn't commissioned as a creator-owned series. (In much the same way BARNEY lists Hilary Robinson's series as being creator-owned... they certainly weren't
commissioned on that basis, but Fleetway gave her the rights back to make a potential legal headache go away.)
Giving the creators the rights to Big Dave to Morrison, Parkhouse & Millar also released Fleetway from any obligation to publish the completed strip Sharon's Big Night Out that was deemed too offensive for the Sci Fi Special.
is that the one where Big Dave bumps into Salman Rushdie and attempts to claim a bounty on the author's life at the nearest corner shop? IIRC, it also features many 'hilarious' [and probably legally actionable] 'jokes' about E17 being homosexual, etc.
Lovely Steve Parkhouse art. But otherwise...

Hardback version of the Finn Origins collection cover art by Charlie Gillespie:
Nice cover! Good to see Gillespie doing some prog stuff, it's been a while from what I recall.
Coming to the prog in November:
Incredible SF action from the Eisner-nominated UK anthology! Prog 2306 is the fourth and final all-ages special issue of 2022, and sees Cadets Dredd and Rico investigating lawbreaking at the Black Atlantic docks in "Undertow," plus the young G.I.s the Mayflies return, and there's much more! Meanwhile, in Progs 2307-2310, Sov psychic operatives attack Mega-City One in "Buratino Must Die"; young survivor Zoe must journey across a dangerous planet in "Enemy Earth"; the Joy drug spirals out of control in Hershey: "The Cold in the Bones"; a magical A-bomb is about to go off in Hope: "In the Shadows" Reel Two; and the killer twins have their sights set on Noam in Chimpsky's Law: "A Terrifically Disturbing Adventure"!
Coming to the meg in November:
More action and adventure in the future-shocked world of Judge Dredd! The lawman deals with troublemakers in the Cursed Earth in the final part of "Babel"; Judge Death is given a new lease of life courtesy of a heavy metal band in "Death Metal Planet"; Zane Perks starts his dangerous mission in Surfer Book Two; Devlin Waugh continues to mine his past in "Karma Police"; and Psi-Judge Lillian Storm crosses the underworld in "Dead and Gone"; and in the bagged supplement this month we showcase the art of Thor: Love and Thunder storyboard artist Mark Sexton, collecting two Judge Dredd stories by him and Mike Carroll!
Nice to see Book 2 of Surfer so soon. And more Chimpsky is always a boon.
That's a great cover for prog 2306!
Glad to see Storm Warning coming back. It has the cosy feel of a Sunday night detective TV show, but with a dash of Victorian macabre. Great art too.
What do we know about Death Metal Planet, author etc? Is it in current continuity, set after Dark Justice and Dominion by Wagner? Or maybe a lighthearted tale where the band doesn't successfully involve Death?
Just seen in the Thrillmail that Brink vol 5 is due on 23rd Nov.
I pre-ordered it months ago from Forbidden Planet and the release date was said to be 16th Aug.
Does anyone know why there is such a delay?
(It's actually fine as I probably won't actually read it for a while).
Other than maybe 1 day, I don't think there has been a delay. I pre-ordered months ago elsewhere and was told 22 Nov. Maybe FP was given an early indication that they never updated.

Could be any number of reasons but, as mentioned previously, there's a global paper shortage that's wreaking havoc across the schedules of the entire publishing industry.
As I noted in another thread, flagship Marvel titles are being kicked months down the road in some cases. So it's hardly surprising Rebellion is being caught up in this ongoing problem. I guess it's just one of those things. At least periodicals haven't (yet?) been (noticeably, from the consumer end?) hit.
The cross-over prog 2300 and meg 438:

Xmas prog and meg:
Prog 2312 X-Mas Special - The Galaxy's Greatest Comic celebrates the festive period with the traditional 100-page end of year special, featuring a brand-new line-up of stories. Judge Dredd faces off against an old enemy that's bust out of containment in "The Last Temptation of Joe"; Proteus Vex must negotiate a full-blown interstellar war in "Crawlspace"; Cyd learns more about her state of being in "The Out" Book Three; ABC Warrior Joe Pineapples reveals his past in "Tin Man"; Rogue Trooper encounters Nort genetic experiments in "Brothers"; and a character from 2000 AD's history comes back to haunt Tharg,. All this and much more!
Judge Dredd Meg 451 - More action and adventure in the future-shocked world of Judge Dredd! The Megazine has a format change from this issue, becoming perfect bound and losing the polybag, with this Xmas edition being an incredible 144 pages. There's a special Xmas Dredd story, plus the latest instalments of Storm Warning, the Dark Judges, Devlin Waugh, and Surfer Book 2. Plus there's the debut episode of a new alternate Dredd series, and the opening instalments of Judge Dredd: Year One and Mega-City Two, and much more!
WAYHEY. Wasn't expecting The Out back so soon. That is magnificent news. Plus Proteus Vex. Looks like 2023 will start with a bang!
I also did not expect the Joe Pineapples series to be launch this year and I also wonder if the Rogue story will only be an once-off or a return series
Interesting Megazine news. Another format change, which suggests the floppy is history. A new alternate Dredd series. But what is Year One and Mega-City Two? IDW reprint? (I also wonder what pagination it'll have after this Christmas special – I can't imagine anywhere near 144. 100? 80? 60?)

Which would also cut down on plastic: a big plus, IMO. But who knows?
As for format, my favourite period of the Meg was the start of vol. 4. At that time, I wasn't that well versed on much outside of the Prog, and had missed a lot. (At uni, I don't recall buying any comics – just loads of music!) So while the reprint was fun enough, I loved Lazarus Churchyard, Hellboy and Scarlet Traces. I thought it was a pity when the format shifted again, and although I've enjoyed aspects of the floppies, I'm quite happy to have
a comic.
I just hope that if the Meg is making changes due to financial reasons (which we've been told has often been the reasoning in the past) that the reprint is handled well and smartly. I'd be happy enough with Matt Smith IDW Dredd, if that's what we're getting. (Deviations and the Mars Attacks crossover were also good.) But I could do without almost everything else from IDW. I couldn't even get through all of Mega-City Two when I tried to read it. (Aside: I'd also be happy if Rebellion would reprint – and even continue – IDW's take on Rogue Trooper. I really liked that and was keen to see where it would go.)
Obvs, this may well be 2+2 = four billion and 57, and Year One and Mega-City Two might be something else entirely.

I'm assuming the episode in the Christmas prog isn't episode 1 then.
Am I the only one for whom the Meg's forthcoming format-change is *just about the most exciting thing to happen in ages*? So many questions! Is this the end of the floppies? Will the reprint be inside? (The unacceptability of which was surely what started the floppies in the first place?) Will we be seeing less new material, or the same, or more? Will there be a change of page size/ shape? A new logo? More, or fewer, text pages? What about price point?
I love it when the prog and Meg change their outward appearance- and I have said in the past that I think the prog especially has been stuck the way it is for far too long. Could the prog be finally getting a revamp too?
As I say, this is BEYOND THRILLING. I can't wait!
SBT
For example: this new squarebound format- at the current size? Or at the smaller, US size of the new 'Best Of' title?
SBT
I also feel that the prog can get a face-lift. Hopefully we will get more "new" stuff with the format change of the meg. It also looks like the meg from now on might get a x-mas edition like the prog
I really, really did not like the idw stuff
I had completely forgotten that the Meg used to be square bound. And it used to include the re-print material inside. So it sounds like it's going back to a similar format to how to used to be.
There's a lot going on in there and hopefully we will get more details of what the new regular Meg will be like ongoing. Even as a digital subscriber I'm very interested to see what they do and what the new content will be.
Fingers crossed.
As for the Prog I'm in the if it ain't broke don't fix camp. For me the Prog works as is, but if change comes I'll approach with an open mind...
I'm not sure what you could do to the Prog to change it without adversely affecting the comic. The Meg has always been a bit of a moving target, though. I hope it's still doing well and that the format change is for other reasons (sustainability; ease of production; flexibility of content) than sales.
If nothing else, it'll be interesting to see how people react to the change. From a psychological standpoint, the Meg pulled a clever trick when it started with the floppies. People got into thinking they were paying for the main comic and the floppy was a 'free' extra. Whereas when the comic was combined, some parties were annoyed at paying for a magazine where half of it was reprint. Ultimately, the overall package has long been pretty much the same.
Yeah the Prog has been the same format pretty much all the time i.e 5 stories. The only changes have been in paper, logo, size- but only to a limited extent -? and the amount of colour pages. The only only other changes have been the very occasional one page strip and for a short while only, music reviews (which as I type that sound so out of place). So I agree, not really sure what they could do.
I was, of course, talking about the look and feel of the comic, not the content. That particular paper size and the cover design have been around since 2007 (the logo design since xmas prog #2008, Dec 2007 and the paper dimensions long before that.) That's fifteen and a half years! Time for a change- perhaps to the same dimensions as The Beano (which tends to stick out on the shelf while the prog gets hidden behind things, being much shorter), perhaps even the same paperstock?
Anyway, whatever, exciting!

Highly unlikely, I think, that we'll see any kind of format change that would have a knock-on effect on the TPB lines...
I like the logo, no need to change it just because some time has passed.
I think the question you have to ask with any format change is: why? There have to be benefits. I can think of several for the Meg. I can't think of any that would come from adjusting 2000 AD's page size. As for the logo, I like the current one and it's a brand that's well known. Would it benefit 2000 AD to change this? Probably not.

That was what I loved most about that period, the additional material was stuff I probably wouldn't have encountered otherwise. Opened up new vistas.
What would be nice to see is more Treasury of ... material that we might not see otherwise. Even if it is a little 'dirty' as far as repro is concerned. There's loads of material that might only run for an issue or so but not enough to justify much more.

I'm the same, I just don't have the space for them. I do wish the prog would adopt something like Amazon's guided view, though.
I keep flitting between "keep my sub", "keep my sub but offload at the end of each year" and "go digital". I'm the same. Reluctantly I'm going to have go digital when my renewal comes up. But I think I might treat myself to a bigger iPad to read them on. A few things occur to me about my collection: each Prog represents a week of my life, I'm not sure if I'll ever actually re-read them given how long that would take, but it's hard to let go of them. If I could magically swap them for digital versions I would, but given they don't exist before 2003/ 02 that's not possible. But even for those that do exist, I can't actually see myself retrospectively buying them.
I think once the habit is broken, it's gone. There might be pangs, but that's it. I broke it when CDs long ago. Books? Nope. They have to be paper. Same with collected comics I care about and want to keep. Actual comics sit in a slightly less certain place, purely because they take up so much space. But I am very reluctant to ditch 2000 AD and the Meg – and we fortunately right now have the space. (I also have about a half dozen boxes of Marvel comics I'd get rid of before the 2000 ADs – and the Megs would go before 2000 AD itself.)
As for treating yourself to a bigger iPad, what size? The 12.9 is great in terms of size, but a bit weighty. Either way, I trust you're using Chunky, the comic app of kings?

I think once the habit is broken, it's gone. There might be pangs, but that's it. I broke it when CDs long ago. Books? Nope. They have to be paper. Same with collected comics I care about and want to keep. Actual comics sit in a slightly less certain place, purely because they take up so much space. But I am very reluctant to ditch 2000 AD and the Meg – and we fortunately right now have the space. (I also have about a half dozen boxes of Marvel comics I'd get rid of before the 2000 ADs – and the Megs would go before 2000 AD itself.)

Yes I agree with most of that. I'd get rid of the Megs before the Progs but I have now switched to a mixture of physical and digital collections. But I do prefer the physical ones.
As for the iPad, I haven't really looked into it, just know if I make the swap I'll want one bigger than my current 9.5 inch one. Plus that would be better for football and streaming tv shows as well. And I need one with more storage.
I do use Chunky, but also the 2000AD app. Yes I know it has it's flaws, but I just like it.
Much like when I'm asked if I want chips or rice I go half and half (when they let you some places don't, can never figure that out... ANYWAY...). Prog I will struggle to let go, well again. I've done it too often in the past. Everytime I have I've got back on board and tracked down back issues to one extent or another. So This time with an almost full paper set and 16 years into a sub I ain't going back now... well while the option remains to keep going.
The Meg I've just never been as attached to. When I got back into the Prog last time I decided to wait to jump back on the Meg until I could go digital. Somehow that took 9 years. Anyway perfectly happy with the Meg digital. Have bought all the available back issues digitally and I'm slowing filling in the last remaining gaps physically.
Its a happy compromise... well especially since Rebellion have weasled their way into my wallet and shelf space with constant excellent Treasury releases something has to give!
Going back a bit, thread-wise. Didn't IDW start publishing 2000AD content just over ten years ago - already established by the time the film came out, I seem to remember? So possibly the licence has lapsed and Rebellion now have the reverted rights, free to do with as they wish? That's my stake on Year One and MC2 being the IDW versions. In my opinion the mini-series were far superior to the main run of IDW Dredds, though I wouldn't have picked those two series for reprint.

I have an 11inch iPad and it works great. My brother has the 12,9 and he said that it is too heavy (and not always easy to handle).

The current 12.9 is a little heavy, but it's insanely powerful and (pretty much) the size of a sheet of A4 — reading comics on it is a delight.
I've had them all in for review. The 11in is better in terms of weight and 'feel'. The 12.9 has a better display, and is a superior fit for comics – but it's a bit unwieldy. Really, you want physics to be warped and for Apple to somehow release a 12.9in iPad that's quite a bit lighter. That said, it's amusing to note that the very first iPad weighed 680g and the current 12.9in iPad Pro weighs... 684g.
(Regardless, anyone considering an iPad should wait. There will almost certainly be new models next month.)

No no, I'm sure that Tharg is going to publish some new totally racist material. For sure, absolutely.
So Bonjo is back from Garth Ennis and Kevin O'Neill:

If he does, I'll be so angry, I'll go round to the command module and break his Pentax.
Is this the first time we see Matt, Keith and Mr Molcher as their true robotic selves?
Not sure if it's the first time for any of them, but Molch-R seems dead chuffed with his droid pic: https://twitter.com/molcher/status/1574751351770435585
Having seen those preview pages, I'm looking forward to this!
Thirteen pages is basically going to triple or quadruple the amount of Bonjo material Tharg has ever printed.

Who wouldn't be chuffed to be caricatured by Kev O'Neill?
From Previewsworld, re Meg 450:
"More action and adventure in the future-shocked world of Judge Dredd! The lawman deals with troublemakers in the Cursed Earth in the final part of "Babel"; Judge Death is given a new lease of life courtesy of a heavy metal band in "Death Metal Planet"; Zane Perks starts his dangerous mission in Surfer Book Two; Devlin Waugh continues to mine his past in "Karma Police"; and Psi-Judge Lillian Storm crosses the underworld in "Dead and Gone"; and in the bagged supplement this month we showcase the art of Thor: Love and Thunder storyboard artist Mark Sexton, collecting two Judge Dredd stories by him and Mike Carroll!"
I thought we were getting a format change and no more floppies after the next, second, Robin Smith one?
