Title: Cheap Thrills - the only January sale you'll want in 2012

Progs for a quid, Megs for a couple of bin lids, graphic novels for more than half price? All true:

Thanks Emperor. A couple of GNs bought:

Nicholai Dante: The Great Game
Apart from the first GN and one of the Tsar Wars volumes, there's lots of the old Dante stuff I haven't read.

Caballistics Inc: Going Underground.
I actually have the second. I don't ususally buy out of order but I picked it up cheap on Mongoose a while back.

I was tempted to get the Slaine action figure too... but thought that might be a bit much...

Argggggggg. This is my chance to fill in my two year gap*! Oh my god. Oh my god.  But it still gonna run me nearly a 100 US dollars for a single year's worth of Progs!

*well, technically three years. But I have all of 2008 digitally. But I just can't justify replacing an entire year of progs I've already read. Yet.

Still, I could not pass it up. So I've decided to fill in all of 2009. Even with shipping over 30 or 40 US dollars, it still comes out $160 cheaper had I bought all those comics at retail. Which is an insane steal. So... yeah. There's 100 bucks I probably shouldn't have spent exchanged for Progs.

If this sale runs to the end of January. I might make an attempt to fill in 2010 if I have any spare money at the end of the month. Does not seem very likely though.

I just hope all those comics make it through customs okay. Anyone ordered mass numbers of Progs via the 2000 AD store in the US? They turn up okay?

Hmm, some good bargains there on first glance, but after postage is added on it's not much of a saving vs Amazon Marketplace for the book I wanted.

Only worth it if you're making a large order.

The postage is steep though so it's worth ordering a fat wodge of thrillpower.

I've ordered ACE Trucking Vol 2, Complete Ro-Busters and Dante: Hell and High Water, a bargain, I thought, at £18.

Then I got to the postage and 'handling'; EIGHT QUID!? Is it being sent by frigging courier? I only live in Yorkshire. Christ... that's another argument with the wife...

Yeah, I was going to order two books (Ro-Busters and Money Shots), but when you added on the £5.49 for postage the saving was negligible, so I didn't bother.

Mind you, I just did a quick check on Amazon and the 3 books I ordered here would cost £38.22 from Amazon, even with free delivery, so I suppose it's still good value.
Title: Re: Cheap Thrills - the only January sale you'll want in 2012
Post by: Mardroid on 03 January, 2012, 06:32:16 PM
I ordered two books and the postage came to 2.99! I thought that a bit much, but on comparison with Amazon prices.... well, I might have made a saving if I'd gone with a second hand seller. (I'd normally be happy to do that, but the deal was so good overall I was happy to give the money to Rebellion.)

In hindsight it's probably just as well I didn't get the Slaine figure though (although I'm still half considering it, great big kid that I am. If the Reaction Dredd had been there for the same price I'd have gone ahead) as that packet probably would have increased the cost quite a bit.

I'm not sure what Rebellion's shipping practices are.

Its probably because vol 1 hasn't been available on Rebellions 'other' site with the permanent sale on.

8.25 postage on 6 graphic novels (inc. a chunky phonebook Robusters) and 4 action figures (not really a fan but at 2.40 each thats better value than a copy of Clint).

The Meltdown Man GN is about 14 quid - so picking up the two Xtreme Editions that also reprint it for 50p each looks like a bargain. On the downside you can't put them on the shelf with the other GNs but you do get two colour covers by the talented Cliff R.

My stuff is here!

I'm very pleased, except Slaine's leg fell off. I don't recall that happening in the comic, even when really freaky artists drew him. I'll have to glue it, as I'm not going to all the bother of returning it. It's a bargain, anyway, and just for Max and I to play with.

Surprisingly, I've been struck by how the Slaine figure is pretty cool. I'd never realised - if I had, I'd have bought one years ago. It's possibly the best Slaine-related thing I've seen since Sky Chariots.  :)

Yeah, I thought it looked good too. (It's shame the female figures seem to have a white-face thing going on... although I suppose that's in character in Durham's case.) Think I might pick one up after all... although I'll admit I don't have a kid as an excuse. Maybe a Judge Death too... or should I think that too much?

See what I did there?

Stevie's just filled the Diamond-shaped gaps in his collection. Blimey, he will admit to being  taken a mite aback that increases in  postage to Auxtralia since last year's sale trebled the order total.

But at least  this way he's finally assure d of getting his welding gloves mitts on these kitties.

My order arrived! Prog 2009, 1627 - 1665, and Prog 2010 are now mine! That fills in the entire 2009 run of Progs. So that's one year of my two year gap now covered. I'm still trying to finagle filling in 2010 before the month is out because the cost is so right (and these issues are a pain in the ass to find ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE US. Ebay, YOU'VE FAILED ME FOR THE LAST TIME!)

I'm really happy with Rebellion's shipping office. My progs came in a heavy cardboard box, wrapped in bubble wrap, and surrounded with packing peanuts. Atomic Wars couldn't harm this monolith of shipping. So that makes me feel good about ordering more hard-to-find books through Rebellion themselves. Also, 2-weeks isn't bad for overseas shipping either. So yeah, generally a good experience ordering from Rebellion for the first time. It would be NICE to get an email confirmation or an indicator in my Account order information, when the order has shipped, but I guess that's a minor complaint.

I reckon punters are better of going for the numerous titan books aeditions availble on amazon -- altough they only go up to book9.

My second package came today! Slaine and Judge Death action figures! Very nice they are too.

I was a bit disappointed that Death's legs seemed to have no poseability whatsoever. (They seem to compensate by putting it in his waist.) And Slaine seems to be permanently bow-legged...although it's not a bad look for him. Lovely detail though! I had hoped for a scabbard for the sword but that cloak provides a nice alternative place to stick it, so to speak.

I see Slaine as primarily an axe man who uses a sword for back up. While wielding a weapon in each hand looks cool, (and I'm sure he'd manage it) that axe is a two handed weapon, and that's I'll how likely pose him. (I've put way too much thought into this.)

Not back in print, for some reason The Book Depository had 10 copies of the original Book 3 of the Complete Nemesis, when I found it I jumped on it for £16 and change delivered. Just a shame the 2000AD order for the first two volumes still hasn't shown up as yet.

So what's the considered opinion of the Rogue Trooper statue? I was seriously tempted by this but looking at the close up pics over on cellarofDredd I decided it was low on detail and badly painted. Am I wrong?

Bit the bullet and ordered up the remaining issues I needed to fill in my 2010 2000AD gap.

Expensive month, but it'll be worth it to have a 'complete' run from 2004.

Where 'complete' means I still only have 2008 in digital progs. Someday I'll have to get around to replacing those with physical copies. What is up with Prog 2008 not being in the sale with the rest of the Year End Progs?

After making lots of charts and Excel databse (and several nice mail with Julian) I've finally make my 5 order to France with the best ratio between number of copies and P&P. I don't know if the threshold (related to weight) are the same for UK, but to France, if you order 14 megazine, with 11£ for P&P (the 15th make you jump at 30,5£ for P&P)  it will finally cost 1,79£ per issue. As for the prog, the best ratio up to 50 copies will be 40 progs with 11£ for P&P, and each prog will finally cost 1,275£ (if the prog was at 1£, I have bought lots of prog at 0,50£).

So I've ordered 2x 40 progs (+5) and 2x 14 meg. Beats all the prices I've seen anywhere on the net, and don't forget we are talking mint copies here.

Hope these information will help French customers to make their minds.

By the way, it seems that the special progs (like prog 2005) are counted as regular prog from a P&P point of view.

According to the arcane machinations of the international postal service (now there's Dan Brown's next book for him right there. The Post Code, anybody?) the Bleep order that he made the following week of his prog shop order arrived within 8 days. Yet his previous, made the same day as he filled the Diamond –shaped gaps in his collection, has only today landed upon these South Auxtralian shores..

Which can only mean that thrill power overload is imminent any day now woo hoo!

Any squaxx Down Under received their own yet?

SALE'S BACK ON!

Luckly UK Somebitches only pay 5.99GP for shipping.

EDIT: Damn it. They remembered to put Prog 2008 on sale this time. Damn I missed it...

If this sale lasts for a while there is a good chance I will try to fill in some Megazine gaps before the month is out. Maybe. Or maybe I'll finally pick up some MIA trades I've missed over the years.

I thought I'd cut down on my spending once Christmas was over, but in addition to this sale Network DVD also just had a massive sale, the new Batman Lego has just hit the shelves here & Amazon UK have pulled the plug on their free super saver delivery to Australia.

My 2010 Progs arrived today. This whole experience has been rather great. I generally don't like ordering overseas due to high shipping costs and fear of damaged goods, or hang ups in customs.

But this has all been rather smooth, and pretty fast. My first order arrived in two weeks. This second one, only a week and a half.

And the savings. Even with Shipping costing more then the books themselves, spending just $200 for what would have cost $500+ if I had bought the issues in singles as they came out (or worse, tried to buy them as back issues domestically) has been a great stroke of luck.

Now its time to take a break from buying, and just kick back with some THRILL POWER. I just can't wait to get into reading stuff I've missed like Age of the Wolf, Damnation Station, Ichabod Azrael, The Life & Death of Johnny Alpha, Kingdom The Wild, and Shakara the Destroyer.

And apparently a million Pat Mills comics. They guy seems to have been busy between 2009 and 2010.

Not really on topic, but it's kind of related, and I didn't want to start a new thread.

I've been wanting to get hold of a Dredd action figure for a while. Unfortunately they all appear to be sold out of the shop so didn't make the sale, so I went the ebay route.

I'd hoped to get the Reaction figure but ended up missing the one available. I prefer the face sculpt and accessories with that one (Dredd should come with a day-stick I think) but ended up getting the Legendary Heroes version. I daftly ended up paying more than I'd liked, considering this was for an unpackaged second hand figure. Probably not that much considering there aren't all that many, and probably still cheaper than the original price, but when comparing to the price of the NEW figures in the 2000 AD shop sale... oh dear...

Basically I bidded right at the end of the auction, entering an amount thinking "I bet someone has bid higher, so I doubt I'll get it anyway..." then won.

To be fair, it's in mint condition and it comes with all the goodies apart from the Pitt thing, which I don't want anyway. (There seem to be a few of these sold like this, on ebay. I wonder if the original owner bought the figure purely for the Pitt attachment and decided to flog on the main fiugre.)

Anyway. It arrived today, and I'll admit, I'm quite impressed. The elbow pad colour is wrong (although in some of the older coloured comics it appears that way). I'm not keen on the face and the cleft chin look, and as I said, it doesn't come with a day-stick. On the other hand you get two versions of the lawgiver, which was a nice touch.  The armour doesn't appear to be detachable*, which was a nice feature of Reaction figures, but, on the other hand it's not likely to accidentally pop off which happens easily with the Judge Death figure I have. It could use a better paint job, but I've thought the same of the Reaction figures too.

I haven't handled the Reaction Dredd, but if the articulation is anything like Johnny Alpha or Slaine, this figure is quite a bit better in that way.** He's even got a joint for the balls of his feet, meaning his toes move! Unfortunately the shoulder armour and badge restricts movement of his left arm, but even so.

Anyway, it's not a bad rangy looking version of Dredd and it's got a lot of nice detail. I will probably still keep an eye out for a Reaction version but this isn't a bad version for a collection. Not that I really have much of a collection.  I shouldn't have paid that amount for a second hand figure though, but I doubt I've have picked it up much cheaper.

*(or maybe it's just fixed tightly. I don't want to chance breaking it. I have seen pictures of this figure sans helmet though. Shock!)

** Judge Death can't even move his legs, but he is an exception with these figures.

I was thinking of buying one or two Mardroid. I haven't actually seen one of them. Worth having? How much did you pay for one?... about...

I ended up paying £11.17 for the Dredd excluding postage and packing. It makes me wince when I consider I bought packaged figures for £2.45 from the 2000 AD store... (Judge Death and Slaine this year. I bought a Johnny Alpha the year before's sale, but I think that was bit more, but still great value)  and as I said this was unpacked. (Out of the original packaging I mean, the person who sent it to me packed it very well.)

That's actually probably not that expensive really. I don't think second hand figures should be more than a fiver, (the figures in the 2000 AD sale are amazingly good value) especially when unpacked, but on ebay that's probably a pretty standard price when bidders have finished. Mind you a tenner seems a lot to me for new figures and I see that new 6" figures can easily go for £15 at Forbidden Planet. (Those were terminator figures, and the like- excellent likeness by the way- but I seem to remember the Legendary Heroes figures going for around the same price, but don't hold me to that.)

I thought the figure was pretty nice, and (despite disgust at myself forking out more than I'd like) I'm please with it. Worth getting? Really a matter of taste I guess. As I said, I think the face sculpt on the Reaction figure is better, but there's more articulation on this one. Swings and roundabouts. Don't get if yellow elbow pads piss you off though. Heh.

Yes, I have seen it yesterday. During the clearancethis particular paperback (2005 print, which had an original price of 11£), was sold at 8,99£.

I know for a fact now that it's the S&S version of 2011 (totally different cover and ISBN ,and slightly different content) that they are selling (cover price 13,99£).
