: Hogan and Parkhouse's Resident Alien to become a telly show?
: Colin YNWA 08 March, 2015, 04:07:49 PM
Increasingly these days I'm becoming less and less interested in comic books moving to the big or small screen. This tantalising teasin however has peaked my interest.

http://www.bleedingcool.com/2015/03/07/dark-horses-resident-alien-comic-to-be-a-tv-series/ (http://www.bleedingcool.com/2015/03/07/dark-horses-resident-alien-comic-to-be-a-tv-series/)

Not only cos this will mean my much loved comics will become stratospherically valuable as people who were fool enough not to get onboard with this great series of mini-series clammor to catch up, but more realistically cos this could really work.

One to watch.

Looks like this could be fun, if basically nothing like the comic (which has some subtle comedy, but is mostly really low key). By contrast, that Locke and Key trailer that ran recently did nothing for me. (It looks like they’ve stripped the horror right back, and are aiming for the lowest common denominator of Harry Potter and Stranger Things.)

For all the fans out there, a new mini-series coming November:

Oh this is great news. Great to hear this is coming. I heard it was being working on and was planned to be the last. So the fact that we'll get 6 more issues to wrap things up is super exciting and it will be great to have this as a complete story. Super excited about this.

Also see that Dark Horse will have 3 Black Hammer comics out in November. Dark Horse, who needs Aliens and Predator!

Yep—this is it for RA. I hope this also means it might get reissued in two HC volumes. (I know there’s a softcover omni out now.)

Yeah and the six part conclusion (I think) is coming out around the same time as the show is due to air so that's great.

This is a brilliant series and while we'll see how bold the telly show can be its great that this series is getting the exposure and that Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse are getting the reward (I'd hope???) they deserve.

The first seven minutes are now online, and, er, set your expectations accordingly:

https://tvline.com/2020/10/10/alan-tudyk-resident-alien-syfy-watch-video/

I found that depressing viewing. Having heard about the pre-production of this and Alan Tudyk being cast, I’d assumed it would be very different from the wonderful comic. My assumption was that they’d shift from a quite dry investigative procedural dotted with black humour to something goofier. Instead, this intro has the alien brutally murdering a doctor to take his place. As a tonal shift, that’s quite something, but it makes for a quite nasty start and means the protagonist cannot realistically be anything like the one in Hogan/Parkhouse’s series. A pity. (That doesn’t mean the series won’t be _good_, but there were countless other ways to have handled that scene. The most obvious: the doctor sees the alien and dies of a heart attack. He didn’t need to be hurled through a door and into a frozen lake.)
: Re: Hogan and Parkhouse's Resident Alien to become a telly show?
: Colin YNWA 12 October, 2020, 11:21:55 AM
Yeah that was quite the shift. And yeah my first thought was please make him have a heart attack, or at least make it an accident - but the tone seemed to make it clear that brutal murder was on the cards. I'm okay with that, that's something that can be dealt with and don't think its a fatal blow to Harry's character, just something that needs to be dealt with.

Positives I thought Alan Tudyk seemed promising... and... well lets see.

...I also picked up the Twin Peaks vibe quite clearly. Not sure if this is a good or bad thing. I mean I adore Twin Peaks and there is that in the comic series, but this needs to be bold and be its own thing.

Not enough there to push me either way. And heck we'll always have the comics regardless.
: Re: Hogan and Parkhouse's Resident Alien to become a telly show?

I just thought it was a pity something sweet-natured and smart has been dumbed down to EVIL ALIEN KILLS HUMAN. And, really, I’m not sure that beginning is something the character can recover from in any meaningful sense, unless it eats him up inside with him realising what he’s done, and it makes him resolve to make amends. I note also that they’ve underpinned everything with a mission, which also feels a bit hackneyed. I rather liked the comic’s take, which was basic survival, a lack of desire to interfere, and then a gradual interest in humans.

But, hey, telly is its own thing. Decisions have been made. It just feels a tonal wrench that left a really bad taste for me.
: Re: Hogan and Parkhouse's Resident Alien to become a telly show?
: dweezil2 12 October, 2020, 12:18:17 PM
Even with the apparent changes, I like the source material, and Tudyk, enough to at least give it a chance.

The trailer is here and it makes this look a bit one trick. Wacky alien does weird thing. Surly cop. Murder joins them as the oddest of couples

https://youtu.be/_7niFpwxq4A (https://youtu.be/_7niFpwxq4A)

We'll see how it pans out in reality. Be a shame if they missed the calm patience of the comic.
: Re: Hogan and Parkhouse's Resident Alien to become a telly show?

If that’s the same trailer, I’ll stick with my comments from October: I can’t see how the lead can recover from the events within in any meaningful manner. The weird thing with all of this is I’d assumed Tudyk’s casting meant the show would be dumbed down some and many more zany/funny. I didn’t think they were going to immediately head for brutal and irredeemable. But, hey, Americans.

Its a new one I think (new to me for sure) and skips the whole brutal murder thing - well by our alien at least - and seems to go full on fish out of water.

I watched the first episode of this last night (on Now tv) and really liked it.

I haven’t read the comic so don’t know how it compares to that but I’ll be watching episode 2 for sure.

Good to hear - be interesting to what folks who have read the comic think of it in comparison.

Watched the first episode and was pleasantly surprised.  It felt very true to the series created by Hogan and Parkhouse. I will keep watching this. So for me it is thumbs up.
: Re: Hogan and Parkhouse's Resident Alien to become a telly show?
: IndigoPrime 30 January, 2021, 08:08:25 PM
I might give it a go but the trailer was so far from the original in tone and feel that it didn’t sit at all right with me. The series would have to be radically different somehow.
: Re: Hogan and Parkhouse's Resident Alien to become a telly show?
: von Boom 31 January, 2021, 04:52:40 PM
I've never read the comic so I can't judge there but I have mixed feelings after the first episode. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to like Harry or not. I like Alan Tudyk and he seems to be playing the part well but it's hard to feel sympathy for an alien whose first act is to murder someone and take their identity.
: Re: Hogan and Parkhouse's Resident Alien to become a telly show?
: IndigoPrime 31 January, 2021, 04:56:51 PM
von Boom: That incident doesn’t happen in the comic, and is the bit of the trailer that made me immediately realise that, at the very least, this series would be a world away from the original. I suspect it would be a lot goofier, given the lead, but I wasn’t expecting it to be mean-spirited, which is the last thing the gentle, thoughtful comic is. From the trailer, it feels like a property that’s been ‘Americanized’ in entirely unimaginative ways. Still, the comics are still on the shelf, and I hold out a little hope Dark Horse might release them in HC one day (rather than just SC omnis).
: Re: Hogan and Parkhouse's Resident Alien to become a telly show?
: broodblik 31 January, 2021, 06:10:03 PM
That is one of the changes related to the comic, how he got to be the doctor. But I still feel that it is not always needed to follow the source material 100%. I enjoyed the first episode and I liked the humour on our Resident Alien discovers his humanity.

Never read the comics. The TV show was dumb fun - made me laugh. Will watch again.

The comics are great. Well worth picking them up. They’re not dumb fun, though—more quiet and intriguing storytelling.
: Re: Hogan and Parkhouse's Resident Alien to become a telly show?
: BPP 12 February, 2021, 08:30:37 PM
Have watched the first two and regardless of fidelity to the source material (there isn’t much) the main issue is that the show is all over the place tonally  One minute it’s doing a scene from A Disney pre-teen kids show (the stitches scene) the next it’s doing jokes about vaginal selfies and sucking a cow as if it was a dick.

It’s a very weird watch.
: Re: Hogan and Parkhouse's Resident Alien to become a telly show?
: Professor Bear 12 February, 2021, 10:38:33 PM
I have no idea what the comic is/was like, but the show is a diverting take on the concept of "what if Americans ruined Doomlord by turning it into yet another buddy-cop murder mystery with a mismatched odd couple?"  Some amusing jokes, but it looks like it's going for the serialised approach rather than the murder-of-the-week route, which usually happens in the second season of SyFy shows and kills them stone dead - looking at you, Killjoys and Dark Matter.
I guess we'll see how it pans out, but the accusations of tonal inconsistency and lack of a clear protagonist to root for are entirely valid.

: repoman 14 February, 2021, 01:15:48 PM
I've watched the three episodes.  Hard to get to attached to it because I imagine it'll become terrible like all US shows that have the odd couple/murder solving dynamic.

My wife likes it though and it's relatively easy to get through an episode.  Tudyk's alright.  I don't like 'Con Man' much but other than that he's solid.
: Re: Hogan and Parkhouse's Resident Alien to become a telly show?
: von Boom 14 February, 2021, 01:35:01 PM
I'm finding it hard to get enthused about this show. It's merely okay. It feels formulaic already and I suspect that trend will only worsen if it gets more than one season.

My wife also seems to like it more than I do. Maybe it just appeals to ladies more.
: Re: Hogan and Parkhouse's Resident Alien to become a telly show?
: IndigoPrime 14 February, 2021, 03:42:08 PM
From the sounds of it, this has about as much in common with the source material as League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, then. Not a huge surprise, but a pity. It’s a really great comic, but presumably too thoughtful and not brash enough for a US TV show. I’ll stick with the original in this case, I think.

Watched all 5 aired so far and it’s so all over the place. The two kids are like a 70s Disney live action movie then someone makes an explicit anal sex joke. The lead actress seems to be in an entirely different more serious show. It’s almost 3 shows at once and none of them really clicking. The only good is tudyk  (whose not playing the comic version of the character but is enjoyable in what he does) and the two cops. The two kids are unwatchable as is the new wife character.

Tldr - watching it to support Steve Parkhouse.

I see that the show has been renewed for a second season:

The tone would give you whiplash, and the focus is all over the place, but Tudyk's K2SO schtick is good enough to deserve a longer hearing, and after several episodes I'm still watching
: Re: Hogan and Parkhouse's Resident Alien to become a telly show?
: repoman 03 April, 2021, 11:35:35 PM
I stuck with it and didn't hate it.  I thought it was going to be a 'murder of the week' kind of thing.  Like Castle or, worse, Bones.  But it didn't do that.

The later episodes all had one or two moments that made them worthwhile.

It's the sort of thing that would benefit from being one season and then pissing off before it gets cancelled.  I'm disappointed there's a second season because now it just seems like the story is secondary and they'll be making it up as they go along.
: Re: Hogan and Parkhouse's Resident Alien to become a telly show?
: IndigoPrime 04 April, 2021, 09:04:55 AM
I think, judging from the response on this thread, I’ll just pretend this show doesn’t exist and look forward to the final book to add to the collection. I’m not surprised it’s tonally messy. The original is a very gentle kind of comic and that obviously won’t do for US TV—at least not this network.
: Re: Hogan and Parkhouse's Resident Alien to become a telly show?

I'll probably check this out as a curio at some point but little more than that.

Have the issues for the last series building up in my nerd shop and very much looking forward to those.
