Other Reviews / Re: Judge Dredd: Dark Justice

I guess I can't fault any of the criticisms of the story.    That said a mediocre tale by Wagner is still light years above some of the better stuff from some other mainstream publishers.  It almost reads like a set up for bringing them back at some later point.  The artwork really is the star of the show.

It definitely reads better as a single volume.  I would heartily agree with Dark Jimbo on that score.  Moreover this is a fine example of how to do a special edition.  The roughs and development sketches are an excellent addition.  Being a bit of a sucker for the bookplate editions as well, this again is a nice job.  Sits nicely alongside the Urban Warfare GN.

Ditto on both counts.  Scotch tape is the only one I've found that has the right level of adhesion for opening / closing.  Again had a few 'aagh!' moments over the years when the tape has flopped onto the front cover going back into the bag.

The addition to the line up of Jaegir has definitely upped the enjoyment for me as well.  Personally this year had seemed a bit flat to date.  Some good quality strips (Dark Justice) combined with stuff that didn't appeal.  Now every strip is a pleasure and the rest of the year promises even more quality thrills (Kingdom, Bad Company ...).

Quoteprove to readers that, given enough time and monkeys, Tharg really will reprint EVERYTHING.

Even Space girls?

The placement of John Cassavetes is Dead sounds a bit like Father Earth in the middle of Heavy mob.

Father Earth was the first outing of the Holocaust Squad (IIRC), hence it's inclusion.  Probably the fact that it was from the early days compared to the more Meg heavy later stories is why it appears so peculiar (<rant>plus the lousy reproduction </rant>).

Due to circumstances beyond our control (thanks a lot, Apple!)

You want to get on to that Taylor Swift — she'll sort it all out for you.

Cheers

Although I do remember the first time I saw the trailer for the original. The entire cinema erupted into cheers when the White House was blown up.

Victoria Wood said the same about Titanic, everyone cheered when the damn boat hit the ice berg as it was such a terminally long film!

Other Reviews / Light and Darkness War GN

I always loved this when it first came out so I was chuffed that it was finally getting the GN treatment.  Fair dues to Titan they have done a nice job on it.  Same size as the original comic and the reproduction quality is on a par with the original (Epic released it on glossy paper back in the day). As seems to be a growing trend, it lacks a dustcover.

An intro by some American Naval officer I've never heard of does give it a nice start, looking at the different way in which Vietnam veterans were treated compared to the treatment of WWII / Gulf Conflict / Afghanistan veterans which will probably help a younger audience understand some aspects of Laz's personality.  It is bookended by an article by Tom Veitch detailing development, illustrated with development sketches from Cam Kennedy and an article about the career and relationship of both writer and artist that led to the development of LADW.  All round this is a nice package.

Cam Kennedy's artwork is sumptuous and has to be some of his best.  The combination of Vietnam era military hardware and off the walls bonkers alien tech inspired by Leonardo Da Vinci just works even though it seems like it ought not to.  The only time his skills seem to fail is in the drawing of the car that Lazarus crashes at the start.  It lacks the accuracy that his military hardware possesses.

SFX reviewed this and commented that the characterisation was a bit lacking in places.  There are certain caricatures in places (the South African arms dealer) so I can see the point there.  That said, the pace of the tale and the action quotient tend to mask that out.

There are probably not many folks that have not read this on this site and I'm sure the general consensus will be that it is well worth the read.  If you have yet to read it, well, I can't recommend it enough.

Film & TV / Independence Day Resurgence.
23 June, 2015, 04:39:08 PM
Okay so it probably doesn't top most people's 'please can we have a sequel / remake' list but it's out there.  CBR has an article about the movie but there was one bit that caught my eye:

Quote"Independence Day Resurgence" takes places 20 years after the events of the first film and serves as both a resurgence of the franchise and as a resurgence of the universe, as described by Emmerich. Since the events of the first film, the world has drastically changed with the formation of the new Earth Space Defense division, which has been tasked with protecting Earth from alien forces and has created man-made/alien hybrid machines from the remnants of the first alien attack.

This strikes me as slightly more than a little similar to the Scarlett Traces series by Edginton and Disraeli (the use of the leftover tec from the invasion).  That said, pretty much the whole plot of the first film could be seen as a rip off of so many other films so I guess it shouldn't even be remotely surprising that the sequel is carrying on in the same tradition.

General / Dan Dare collected edition
18 June, 2015, 09:44:54 AM
I know this has been discussed at length after the original announcement but I was wondering given the general trend at the moment if there is likely to be a bookplate edition?  The thought of a nice shiny new limited edition print by his Lordship Sir David Gibbons (well, someone get on an Knight him please!) is ever so slightly appealing. The thought was prompted by the 10th anniversary casebook volume 1 hardback which now includes a very appealing print by the Don himself (Señor Ezquerra).

Isn't that missing the point of design and peoples own personal tastes, which the last time I checked, as we live in a free country we are all allowed to have without being maligned?

I think you misunderstand how a free country works.

I've always said to the kids, if you want to live in a democracy,  move to America.

I can't wait for you to tell me Jim.

You don't seem shy of an opinion or two on here so go for it.

The last time you kindly popped up with some pearls of wisdom I recall you were asking me if I was a dick.

I'm sure, again you have your own opinion on that too.

I'm also grateful for your advice on finding a new hobby.

Thanks for that, I'll have a think. I'm not sure that's going to help me enjoy the new logo any more though, but good of you to offer your input once more like a ray of sunshine into my dull & grey existence...

Cheers

Film & TV / Re: Last movie watched...

Finally tracked down a copy of the film version of Pat Barker's Regeneration and sat down for a viewing.

Having not read the novel in a long time (on one of my Uni courses) but having enjoyed it, I was not fully prepared for how engrossing it was.  Johnny Lee Miller and Jonathan Pryce stood out for me with their performances.  It stands alongside Charley's War as one of the most effective pieces of anti war story telling I have come across.

I think you misunderstand how a free country works.

Also: since you weren't complaining, why would you think you were being "maligned"? If, on the other hand, you were being offended on behalf some hypothetical other person, may I suggest getting a new hobby?
