Title: This weeks Dredd v. Aliens
Post by: Last of the V8's on 06 February, 2003, 04:38:50 AM
Whoa, great stuff again. What made it all the better was the last page of this episode which was the one I bought from Henry Flint at Dreddcon.Thrill power overload!!!
Think this page looked better in black and white though.
Any one else by any pages from Dredd v Aliens?

Thing is, looking at the original b&w art, i thought Dredd was holding a knife not a manky old piece of pipe. Assumed he was going one on one with the Alien just with a knife which would've been cool but now its a pipe??? Looking forward to see how THAT'S resolved

Where would the fun in that be?  While you guys are being distracted by the one alien, there's a nest of them growing somewhere probably.  So you build up to Dredd herocially offing one 'mano et alieno' and then there is the 'Uh we got a problem call' and you find there are loads of them in otto Sumps Ugly Clinic... or something.

That's my guess.  My Pre-Cog accuracy is 2.3%

Trout guesses at apossible plot twist.

Don't read it if you don't want to.

How about Boing?

That bit in the materity ward, that made my blood run cold.

After all, what with 2000AD has been doing for shock value lately, I really couldn't be sure if those babies would be alright. Thank Grud they got through it. Horray for Joe!

Jeez , it's a tough job being a maternity nurse in MC! Death one week, acid dripping Xenomorphs the next...

I've just sent a letter to Tharg on this very subject.

Children are having a very hard time of it in 2000AD at the moment.

Apparently, Grant Morrison is coming back to write a ZENITH story where he takes some kids to a Gary Glitter and Pete Townsend concert.

Sounds like a job for Big Dave.

Personally I couldn't give a toss, let the alien eat them for all I care.  Dredd's killed more for a good cause anyway.

My only real fear is that old Joe's going to get himself killed these days, stopping in fights with incredibly fast-moving aliens to shout things like "Thing moves like lightning!", "That's cleared its sinuses... gotta move in for the kill!" and "Bad idea... Zoom comin'!"

Hmmm.  I noticed that too.

"And now it's loose in the hospital - the one thing we don't want!"

Gordon's word of the week.  'Shonky'.

Let's not forget this is the same Dredd who once yelled, "Drokk! Mean Machine Angel on a divebutt!" as Mean plummeted head-first towards him. One of my all-time favourite pieces of shouty exposition.  ; )

But your point is well taken nonetheless.

"Grud on a greenine"

Is this the same Joe, who was told he was getting too old for these kinda stunts way back in Necropolis!

Have to say that I'm enjoying Incubus more now as the weeks pass, this week's instalment was cool.

Dredd is obviously getting knocked about the noggin quite a bit, as he seems to think this is the same ALIEN he clobbered in the warehouse.

I think boing would only work one ALIEN at a time, if there were multiple ALIENS, they could damage each other, and the acid would do the rest.

"I say we nule the site from orbit, only way to be sure."

"RRRight."

Yeah but who was responsible for the "shonkiness"?

Diggle or Wagner?  Is this evidence of the story being written for a slightly different audience?

SHONKY: Good word, by the way, apologies if I'm infringing your intellectual property rights by using it.  I agree completely with all the copyright theft stuff as well.

I have a great time trying to explain to the kids why they can't just download everything from the likes of NAPSTER like all their mates do.

There was a great ONION headline that made me laugh "KID ROCK STARVES TO DEATH: NAPSTER TO BLAME"

I believe 'shonky' is an Ozzy expression, meaning "well dodgy", "a bit cack", "tacky-as-hell" or indeed "very shit."  Mate.  They seem to say it on Neighbours every time someone does a botched repair-job leading to the inevitable Ramsey-street roadkill incidents that seem to happen every other week.  "Musta binna shonky mechanic, mate!  Strewth!" etc etc

'Let's not forget this is the same Dredd who once yelled, "Drokk! Mean Machine Angel on a divebutt!" as Mean plummeted head-first towards him.'
What about the time the first Giant was trying to dispose of a bomb on a five second fuse, and gave a detailed spoken account of each second that ticked away and how urgent the situation was becoming.
If he only kept this up, he might have survived the Block Mania crisis:
'Orlok's bullet - coming towards me! Only got a fraction of a second to react - gotta dive out of the way!'

For me the one thing I have found suprising is that it's almost entirely been an action strip with none of the brooding horror and tension I associate with the orignal.  Then again, I feel we are still in Phase 1 of the story and the second has yet to arrive.

How many issues is it running for? My guesstimate is til the mid/end of April considering its gonna be run as a four part US edition- plenty of time for brooding horror and tension. Enjoying it so far...

>>plenty of time for brooding horror and tension. Enjoying it so far...

It would be a very oddly-paced story that's all action for almost its first half, and then gets all brooding horror on us.  It usually works the other way round.

Paul wants Alien, when what he's getting so far is Aliens.  To be honest, I think most of the tension and brooding horror of the Aliens franchise has been milked out of it for every drop it's worth.  It worked in Alien, when we didn't even know what the thing looked like for most of the film or what it was really all about.  Three films and umpteen comic book spin-offs and novels later, we know just about everything we need to know about the Aliens, so how much horror/tension can you get out of yet another chestburster scene etc?

Well it'd certainly have been different if had burst out of a little kid stood in the queue of of a Hottie stand instead of an adult stupid enough to stick his head over one of the eggs, which is usually the way they first appear.
