there has only been one story in ingerland town these last 12 days.
but it wasn't even a story.
the war in ukraine has been woefully under reported for a decade. and so here we are now. ditto belarus, hungary, poland, the fear in the baltics, the new terror in the balkans.
all just a day or so of a drive away.
ignorance is the mind killer, at the very least.

I get you now. We haven't been quite as swamped with dead monarch news over this way.

putin mobilising 300,000 reservists and threatening nukes?
that's strange - the bbc had me thinking there that this all finished 12 days ago ...
och well.

Can't say I agree - the only news I heard said that Ukraine had made significant gains. Nobody I listened to, including the BBC, gave me even the slightest feeling that this was anywhere near over.

No, it was published in 1984. Warlock etc was in 1982.

Ah, ok, thanks - was never sure about that.  I'd assumed the fact that it was just called 'Fighting Fantasy' meant it was the first one.  The next of its (multi-player) type was, I think, The Riddling Reaver, which I loved but again never actually played as it was meant to be played.

I am now old enough that I have completely forgotten parts of my early career.
Yayy!

But I bet you'll always remember Tharg the Yuppie...

Thanks! It's from 'Fighting Fantasy - The Introductory Roleplaying Game'.
It also appeared in Out of the Pit.

Brilliant!  I loved that book - my brother got it, and it was my introduction to FF.  Never actually played it properly, which was with a team and a dungeon master.

So, was that the first Fighting Fantasy book ever published, does anyone know?

People were recommending the Woodstock 99 documentary to me left, right and centre, including a bus driver after it turned out I was the only one on board and we started chatting.

Weird - I remember the festival happening, though I was already a bit too old for the Nu Metal stuff that seemed to be the order of the day back then - but I don't remember hearing any controversy about it.  Which is incredible, given that it really did seem to be a clusterfuck, which was the doc's proposed title.

I'd planned to watch the first episode last night but ended up watching all three, fascinated as the joy and optimism gradually became a 90s, sunburnt version of Kids Rule OK.

Probably. They'll also have to change portraits in official offices, pillar boxes and those fancy costumes some officials wear. I'm sure Charlie won't mind covering the enormous cost out of his own pocket...

About which...  ;)  :)

Charlotte Dingle, 38.  Journalist, writer, editor, but to me, friend.

Very sorry for your loss, Sheridan.  It's a brutal experience, losing a friend like that.

When do they want to see you?

I think if it was something bad they would want to speak to you straight away so this sounds like a catch up. If the manager is not in the shop when you are it's totally normal that she would send an email to arrange something. And these things are always done face to face if she's not seeing you in person regularly.

The list Jayzus suggested sounds really helpful. If you can identify what you're anxious about it might help alleviate your anxiety.

Here's that list, if anyone's interested.  It's only a part of the CBT system I use but it's probably the most effective, in my case at least.  Also, it doesn't work if you just do it mentally - the thought has to be written down, and the distortions (and reasons for associating them) beside it.  I don't know why it has to be written, but I do know that's the only way it'll work.

I was skeptical but several of the random things I made seemed to fit well with what each area represented - but it might just as well have been imposing meanings on meaningless shapes...

Hmmm... I'm a bit cynical about this kind of thing, having tried a few different types of therapy myself.  I remember a therapist telling me to act as if I was some kind of chrysalis opening to be a butterfly or something.  I did it, felt ridiculous and gave her a bit of a bollocking for getting me to do something so foolish and ineffective.

17 years later, and knowing a wee bit more about psychotherapy, I haven't changed my mind one bit -  my only regret is not being able to articulate exactly what was so silly about it, which I could do now.

EDIT - Apologies - I'm a couple of pints down and am mentally blending this thread and the Black Dog one mentioned above
