Website and Forum / 2000@d
01 November, 2009, 10:58:25 AM
Just reading Prog 1108 and Tharg talks about the new website he plans to launch on AOL called 2000@d. Now I've heard tslk of other previous incarnations of the website and this forum but don't remember any talk of this. Tharg says it will provide an accompanyment to the Prog adn since I'm reading the issues its said to accompany I was wondering if it was archieved anywhere to have a nosey at?

was it of interest?

Good stuff Emperor. With any luck if he's looking to get back into comics after 10 years Tharg will be looking to hire him. It would seem he's not to everyones taste but I certainly would be chuffed to have him back in the Prog. Come on Tharg you know its a good thing...

Other Reviews / Slaine - Lord of the Beasts
31 October, 2009, 02:22:11 PM
Well my reading of the Progs from my wilderness years starts up again with issue 1100 with a pleasent surprise with the first issue. 'laine - Lord of the Beasts'  is great fun and feels like Slaine of old, maybe not quite at his peak but returning to form that's for sure.

Not a massive fan of Rafael Garres, while he is better suited here than is is in Jonah Hex, there are still times when I find his art a little cluttered and difficult. Its certainly an improvement on the work in the previous few time travel stories.

Good fun.

I have to say I love the first two Asterix live action films, particularly Mission Cleopatra, they really capture the fun of smacking Romans!

On another note the realise of the 50th Ann. has led to the 3 best selling books there being comcis. Different world huh.

Wouldn't it be good if we saw him die by crashing into a chem pit and he just dissolves away and Justice Department never know what happened to him, but we would!

There was a story when they thought just that had happened, 'Missing' issues 1078-1083 (I only remember that as I've just read it - thanks to Barney for specifics). Doesn't invalidate the principal of what you say at all mind.

Prog / Re: Prog 1660 - Holy Terror

Well that was a pleasent surprise while others were getting their Progs I assumed mine would be late like last weeks BUT home from work and there it is waiting for me.

No surprise its another fine issue. Dredd was solid if not spectacular compared to episodes of late (a very high standard admittedly). Kingdom and in particular Shakara fly along brillantly to what I hope will be spectacular conclusions and Necrophim continues to entertain as plot upon plot unfold.

The only disappointment was Strontium Dog. I think the end really let down this strip which had been growing on me week by week. It felt a little contrived and
the Earth Marshals just upping and leaving felt
simply didn't read true to me at all. A rushed and unsatisfying conclusion alas.

Still over all a very good Prog.

Quote...didn't the fella keep loosing his beard...

I now have a mental image of a Swiss bloke letting his facial hair roam freely about the orgy.

That is in fact exactly what happened... no really...

Popped over to Barney to have a nosey at the covers to date this year and have to say its been an absolutely bumper year for great covers, From stained glass Frank, 'Eat you' Zombo, McMahon tributes and beach storming ABC Warriors when the time is right to make this vote it'll be a heck of a tough call.

Yeah I went to a few UKCACs in the late eighties man they were a lot of fun. Through the mists of memory they were on a completely different scale to the ones around today (well the one's I'm aware of). They were massive, or is that just my mind playing tricks with me?

John Smith teamed up with Colin McNeil - now that's something to look forward too.

One thing I'm curious about is it would seem there maybe three stories coming to their conclusion in the next week or two and maybe 6 or so Progs until 2010 is released with nowt listed to fill 'um aside from Slaine? Now a few Future Shocks might be on the cards but I wonder if there's a couple of short run stories on the way as well????

My favourite Asterix moment:

"Oh dear, I seem to have lost my piece of bread..."

"THE WHIP! THE WHIP!"

(Asterix in Switzerland)

Yeah there were a number of orgy scenes in those later Goscinny stories that are wonderfully perverse and yet as a kid kind left me unmarked. A sign of true class. As I recall didn't the fella keep loosing his beard deliberately, or at least it was implied as such and seems blissfully content as the punishments get worse?

Is it just more or is the jpg knackered???

Yeah have to say reflecting on this even briefly has been useful the one I had lined up next is going to have the same problem I think. The 'twist' is a little too, if not telegraphed then a reveal rather than a twist.

I need to hack away at my twists list and really try to have an honest appraisal of how useful they are.

Still onwards and upwards.

Mmmm... here goes- please don't take it personally!

It's good, but not great.
The twist is okay, but it lacks any kind of punch, I think. It also doesn't feel like a pay off for what we've been reading- even though you'd set it up with the natural environment stuff.

Yeah that's interesting cos the twist thing was pretty much what Tharg said. I have a list of twists and this was the one I felt I could build the best story around. Maybe I need to review my thinking on that.

Thanks for that good to get honest feedback.

Speaking of Pam Dawber (well you did) I was always under the impression she was married to Sam Shepard, I checked before posting as I had no idea were this 'fact' came from and loe and behold its complete poppycock. So what happened to Pam Dawber, the answer is not as much as in the fevered imagination of some scouse fantastist (that is true on so many levels!)
