If the beating up scientists ends up being more relevant and explainable, then its a funny way to include it - Wagner has pulled that kind of trick a few times, but he would show you the beating, and it ould be clear it was out of character, and then the rug pull a few pages/episodes down the line.

A mixed bag this month...

Dredd.... oh dear... This is I'm sorry to say, Millar level stuff as far as we are portraying Dredd (and possibly wth the Sino-Cit stuff too).  Dredd beating up citizens for his own amusement!?!  I dont thnk even Millar went that far!

Devlin is a great read by contrast - how to take someone elses strong vision and do a story that fits that vision.

Diamond Dogs and Deliverance I am not really keeping up with - not grabbing me, but the Returners remains interesting and nicely illustrated.

Articles were engaging  - I'm keeping my eye on that Johnson fellow as a potential star of the future (keeping my eye on the otehr Johnson fellow as well, but for different reasons!)

Mechastopheles was a handy reprint as it means I can go back and read the new story having refreshed myself of the previous this morning.

Doesnt this weeks subscription ad still show the badges?  Still havent worked out how to lsten to the audio things.....

My discount wouldn’t work for the block mania bundle when I tried. Seems weird.

Badges where last years gift - my sub renewed last month so I mailed asking could they be sent before it expired and they were. This year I think it’s audio plays? Zero interest in that.

A population so docile and infantilised that they will happily overlook their leaders being responsible for mass deaths and still vote them in, despite knowing full well what they did and will do?

If nothing else you are missing a pretty great Dredd that fits perfectly in Wagner/Mills(let's not open that can!) continuity - God knows there's been times in the past where the only decent thing in the prog was Dredd (or one other), and that was week in week out - as it is, this is 3 out of 5 for me, so as decent a hit rate as I expect from my prog...

Another flick through, then direct to bag & board issue for me.
Cya next week pals.

The Dredd was great stuff - not sure about the bucket of water Indiana Jones bit, but otherwise it was a spot on bit of Dredd - get this fellow on the old man version!

The FS was well told, but I'm not sure Social Media needs to be the punchline of everything aimed at kids?

Pandora Perfect was a good read again

Anderson was a bit too generically generic a tale and Dept K just fell flat for me wwhen your protagonists are super efficient wise crackers - the peril evaporates - see Doctor Who

We dont have the Batman or Superman of 70 years ago though.  We might have a version of Dredd in the 30 years, but will he be the Dredd we have seen remain (mostly) consistent?

General / Re: Voting Coupons
« on: 22 May, 2021, 06:50:40 PM »
Indeed, and I kind of agree to a good degree with the basic "listening to fans is the road to ruin" - witness Doctor Who at various times (and spaces).  Yet Pat is also very happy to align himself with the super hardcore of fans who are the most dangerous -the ones who think "the comic was only good in the bog roll years" and don't want change.  The ones who RTD used a pretty offensive term to describe (he must surely be waiting on the John Barrowman Cancel Bus in 5-4-3....)

Pat is quick to slate the comic moving away from general audience to specialist older readers/fans (I agree), but neglects to mention he was also at the forefront of writing those more "mature" stories, in the prog or elsewhere- Crisis/Marshal Law/Toxic et al.

Okay, so at about 55 minutes in, he talks about the coupons. The general gist is that the coupons reflected the opinions of Ordinary Readers (who Pat likes), but that they didn't reflect the opinions of Hardcore Fans (who Pat dislikes). Editorial didn't want to hear from Ordinary Readers anymore, so took their voting privileges away.

Another piece of magical thinking here - any consumer of his work that Pat disagrees with gets neatly placed in the Hardcore Fan box. Those he agrees with get to live in the Ordinary Readers box.

Jillem Cauvage, surely?

My understanding is Pat was very anti-robots when 2000AD began, considering them a tired trope or some such?  Ro-Busters was  put to him by one of the old-timey editors as "why cant we do Thunderbirds with ex service men?"  Which Pat then decided to use robots instead?

Also Invasion was pitched to Pat by John Sanders IIRC, who had previously pitched it to Michael Moorcock (who had refused to do it on the grounds he wanted no part in Commie Bashing)

Given that Gerry Finley-Day wrote the vast majority of Invasion!, does that mean Pat shouldn't have written Savage? Or that he owes GFD some cash? And should he have given up on Slaine when his co-creator (Angie Kincaid) was shelved off the project?

And wasn't Ro-Busters and ABC Warriors originally inspired by a poster that Kevin O'Neill painted before 2000AD even existed?
