Prog / The NEW new prog....
01 June, 2002, 10:55:19 PM
Got a copy of 1294 from Comics 2002

Not going to spoil it for anyone by revealing the end of Death, just to say this is a corker  - Superb. Congratulations to the Wagner and Irving droids.

And the ending of this prog's Sin City will hopefully silence those doubters who've been saying this isn't going anywhere!  Again more "Wow" moments.

The only real loose link is the 'nuff said' Sin/Dex - even the FS reaches the heady realms of alright, which is praise indeed given the usual standard.

Having got "Jack Bison" coming up, which sounds like a modern day cop thriller, there's an advert for what looks like a straight pirate romp by Ian Edgington and Steve Yeowell called "The Red Seas".  And from speaking to the guys on the stall, it sounds like Mr Mills has not quite abandoned us....

PS. if you can make Comics 2002 its worth the visit just for the bargains on the 2000 stall - both RainDogs + Glimmer Rats for ?12, The RPG for ?20 and the supplement for a fiver, and the "Matter of Life or Death" T-shirt and beanie hats for the same.  Advanced copies of the Meg and 2000AD, the postcards for ?3, TCUs and a batch of other knock down goodies.

And Glimmer Rats really improves when printed on this quality paper - much, MUCH clearer.

Prog / Re:

Ah - Ceckng the creator profiles I see that Colin Clayton wrote two FS's ("Skin Bazaar" with Boo Cook art  and "Space Scum" with Cliff Robinson).  No idea who Chris Dows is though.

News / Jack Bison?
31 May, 2002, 12:20:07 AM
After all the debate about new writers breaking into 2000ad, what should appear today but the new previews, which mentions the story "Jack Bison".  By a couple of people I've never heard of.

Colin Clayton, Chris Dows (pres. the writers?) and Laurence Campbell (who has appeared before IIRC).

Sounds odd - a cop thriller type thing from the descripton. Can anyone cast more light on this one.  The last story to creep up on us unexpectedly like this was Killer, so I'm hoping this isn't going to repeat that particular 'surprise'...

General / Metal Hammered?

Noticed that Metal Hammer hasn't featured Sin/Dex for a few issues now - has it finished for good, or is it resting?

General / On the subject of missing thrills...
22 May, 2002, 02:14:37 AM
Didn't I read somewhere (a good while back) that Wagner was writing a Chopper story that saw Shakespeare back in the Big Meg for a final confrontation with Joe?

Did I imagine it?  Has it fallen by the wayside? Or is it still in the works?

News / Moly - Dredd RPG on the streets!
22 May, 2002, 01:41:54 AM
After fighting with BTopenworld and nearly knackering my computer, I've finally broken through and can tell you Moly that Dungeons and Starships on Digbeth received a batch of Dredd RPGs this afternoon - a lovely hardback beasty which I'll post more about once I've read it (and calmed down from my computer woes!)  -  I'll leave you with this quote from the book though - is it a misprint? I'm not so sure!

"(Judges) can epect to fall prey to to the street crime they have pledged to PROJECT the citizenry against"!!!

General / Cool Beans had their chips?
19 May, 2002, 12:04:02 AM
According to Phil Hall on the alt.comics.2000AD site, Cool beans is headed fopr receivership.  Sad news, but probably not too surprising.  I just don't see how comics you can't hold in your habds are ever going to take off.  The web can be an extremely useful tool for marketing your comic, but the tangible printed page is always going to win out over pixels on your hard drive isn't it?

This means that Marshal Law will have to find a new home - he seems a bit of a jinx if you ask me...

General / Dodgy 70s movies....
18 May, 2002, 04:10:37 AM
Just watched Death Race 2000 - hilarious movie.  If it wasnt for the obligatory soft porn moments and the unbelievably misplaced soundtrack, this would surely be one of the greatest films ever - as you said PVS - Stallones best ever performance.

Now all I need is the Dunwich Horror to come round again...

General / No news is bad news

Hows about some new news on the site.  Having the story about late progs hanging around is not exactly inspiring for any potential new readers who might wander in is it?...

So we know where Dredd was and what happened to Silver and Anderson (BTW, just how long did Anderson lie in the Undercity before she was found by the cadets - this wasn't another of her miracle diets was it? "you too can survive for months without food or water - hell, even oxygen!")

But what I want to know is where was Hershey?  Did she join the resistance or succumb to the control of the Sisters of Death?  Was she a member of the council of five at this point?  And what about other council members - where are they now?

Prog / 1289 with spoilers..
06 May, 2002, 11:06:12 PM
Judging by the current voting, this prog has been quite rightly well received (though rating the new Death story as best story EVER is overstating it IMO!).

For me the better of the Dredd tales is Sin City - I always enjoy stories that take Dredd away from the Meg for a while.  Lots of potentially interesting characters popping up here as well.

Kevs art is good stuff, though his faces are all very similar - even Hershey has got a square jaw!

Can't understand why people are attacking 13 on this showing - give it time I say.  Could be great or it could be Wolfie Smith.

Death is very good, but there are a few niggles - Those helmets are a bit too round for my taste, and why does Anderson look like Babs Windsor?

There's also a minor plot point that doesn't really ring true - If the man who designed the encasement crystals  and who had just carried out a visit to the containment site had gone missing, it doesn't take a psi judge to work out that something's afoot - surely alarm bells would be ringing as soon as he disappeared?

Prog / Atavar - SPOILERS

Isnt the ending of Atavar pretty much the same as the ending of Vermin Stars? I know there are differences, but it's pretty much left me with the same feeling - throw a swerveball in at the very last minute about the motivation of the characters, realisation that the hero has been duped before the complete death of the entire universe?

Hmmmmmm...  I for one had been kind of interested in where Atavar would go, but the ending for me was a disappointment considering Abnett had done the very same thing in his last multipart story.

General / Surviving the thrill famine...
24 April, 2002, 10:53:58 PM
Handy tips on how to keep the thrills rolling til the delayed progs turn up..

1: Get the Megazine.  For some reason it's out a week early in my local comic shop, which is good news for anyone suffering thrill withdrawals.  The "Thrill Power Overload" feature is the most revealing installment yet.

2: Buy Dreamwatch.  There's a feature on the Strontium Dog audio that features the full unexpurgated art from the mid-80s Titan Stront book - - the holy grail revealed unto me!  I've been searching for this for 15 plus years (it was advertised in a prog, but issued with the art partially obscured by a big black border).

3: Buy Death Trap next week - even if your not a fan of the audios, the cover (Flint again) looks bloody marvellous!!

Wheres my sub!?

I notice that Wake hasn't put up the new prog, so I assume everybodies copy is late AGAIN!  I can understand the odd weeks going astray due to a one-off problem at the printers say, but to regularly be late is not on - surely something can be done to fix this  - just what is the problem?

Off Topic / Grade A Tosser
16 April, 2002, 04:47:26 AM
Well, Room 101 was interesting, and confirms what I've always believed to be the case about the cancellation of Doctor Who.

Basically Grade didn't like it, so undermined it by keeping JNT in place when it was obvious that the show desperately needed a new approach.  Instead of trying to fix the perceived weaknesses, he ordered Colin Bakers sacking out of spite for the rumpus he caused in the press, and hired a deeply unlikeable buffoon to replace him, thus sealing the show's fate. I seem to recall reading an interview with JNT where he said that whenever Who got bad press or falling ratings, he'd get treated to lunch or some other perk by Grade!
Interesting to see that he attempted to "cancel" rather than "rest" the show, as was the story put out when the Beeb had to back down.  Of course, after three years of Bonnie Langford, Ace and McCoy, it was no trouble to axe it....

Now if Grade thought it was cheap, why didn't he put more money into it?  If he thought it was out of date, why not bring in fresh blood?  The fact that Who, while admittedly well below par when first cancelled was pulling in more viewers than Wogan and Match of the Day is amazing.  The fact that Grade didn't care one jot when this was put to him proved how utterly unsuitable he was for the job.

Suggestions / Wouldn't it make sense if....
15 April, 2002, 02:56:40 AM
....we were told when 2000AD was going to make an appearance in some mag or other - I missed the Big Issue article, cos I was hoping someone would post here when it appeared.  I didn't even know about the Independent on Sunday until it was too late! Its all extremely frustrating for the fans - I know these things are aimed more at attracting new readers, but it would be nice to know about them...

So can anyone tell me which issue of the Independent on Sunday featured the article?  Even better, does anyone have the articles to scan - perhaps they could go up on the website? Otherwise, if someone could send them to me that would be great!

General / Warrior reprints in the Meg?
13 April, 2002, 03:34:37 PM
According to CI's report on the 2000AD 25th Anniversary Bash, Alan Barnes "hinted at dramatic changes in store for the 2000AD Megazine - as it is now known - that should please fans of a certain classsic 80's antholgy."

Does this mean "Warrior" reprints in the Meg? I can't think of any other British anthology mags back then, except maybe A1 possibly?

If so, thats a disappointment for me, because I'm still waiting on those Daily Star Dredds!

Last we heard, the droids had been too lazy to pick them up from the Star - any further news on them?

General / Guess the quote:
10 April, 2002, 01:37:00 AM
Just reading an old(ish) magazine and found the following film review:

"This is one of those films where everyone involved babbles on endlessly to the press about how they love the old comics, but you only have to see the film to know what they really think (ie that they're rubbish).  Something of a joke, as the comics were way more complex and clever than this dire effort, which can't think of anything to do besides go for a campy parodic melodrama."

Anyone know which film they're describing here?
