Caught up with this one tonight and really enjoyed it. Okay so the ending, the two people jamming the door ending was a bit contrived but that aside fantastic. The ending ending, Amy Pond bit was just superb. Loved that.

Over all a very satisfactory two parter that I really loved. Horrah

Well hell yeah that's pretty incredible!

Well if we're going to keep it off track lets, as its good stuff.

Yeah its clear that in the first half the female characters are really really strong, well balanced and diverse. Something its fair to say at the time 2000ad didn't do very often (though it did at times), mind they were very different beasts. As far from Dave Sim's current reported view as you can imagine.

Okay so there are moments when you wonder quite what point he's trying to make. Cerebus at the end of Church and State book I (just read so its fresh in my mind) trapped in the wall 'vagina' hole impotent, could have overtones when cast reflectively back. Mind it could be just that Cerebus a very 'male' character (in the cliched men as pigs sense (well earth pigs certainly)) is actually made impotent... well you see you can run around in circles.

That's what makes the change so infuriating. The bits of the latter half I've read make it more clear that there's an agenda that's less cool behind things. Its still an incredible piece of literature, just one that forwards a view that I don't share.

The ideas he then retrospectively throws back onto the first half just read as silly, however seemingly elegantly they're argued. As the first half just has good characters across the range.

Edited: Well so does the latter half (that which I've read to date) its just they are shrouded in this apparent anti feminist agenda.

Yeah during my current re-read I'm reading the notes in the FAQ of this website

http://www.cerebustheaardvark.com/

(how any of the questions are frequently asked escapes me). In the first instance to see what insights I was missing, now out of a morbid fascination with the revisionist views the man has of his own work. The amount of sub-conscious subtext he finds is astonishing and the leaps of logic he makes by making generalisations infuriating. All that said Cerebus is still an astonishing piece of literature.

Bringing this tread back on track Cerebus is of course the answer to this question posed. After reading that (or the later sections certainly) any issues female partners have with the sometime lacking portrayal of women in 2000ad will pale.

Meant to ask, is the complete Blackhawk complete complete? As in Tornado and 2000ad stuff?

Yeah Keith (I think it was) said the Tornado stuff would be included. Which I'm very excited about.

Prog / Re: How long has Dante got left?
28 May, 2011, 05:20:59 PM
The only thing that makes me think he won't get 1800 is how close will that be to the release of the Dredd film? Not sure quite when either will happen 1800 will be towards the end of next year right? So maybe they'll be mid a Dredd push in which case any celebration prog will be Dredd heavy.

Nowt like wide speculation!

Prog / Re: Prog 1736 - Marching as to War!

The only thing wrong with this Prog is the surprise that Dante comes to an end so soon. As ever it does it in a show stopping way that puts all that comes before it in the shade in its sheer brilliance. A fantastic tight Dante story that I predict on nowt but speculation alone has set up one final twist in Lulu's tale.

While all else might be cast in Dante's shadow its all really good stuff. Everything just steps it up a notch for me. Hopefully the two Alan Grant stories will answer some of the questions that have been raised against the great man lately. I thought the Anderson episode moved things incredibly well into a nice new section of the story and what has gone before is just well crafted set up and the meat of the story starting here is juice enough.

Its the Dredd however that shines for me. Sure its of the old school but its fantastically so and really a great little one shot.

The other two are just great. Absalom for the first time really delivers on its potential. Cursorily with the led all but absent. Instead focusing on the horrors that he oversees and the impact that has on people not so used to it all. Really well crafted story. Red Seas fair fizzes this week and hits home with the promised high seas, high octane swashbuckling adventure that just been waiting to be let loose. For me this as been an impeccably paced story.

All this and the news many have been waiting for in Nerve Centre. If ever I needed a reminded to resubscribe as my current one comes to an end this is it.

Great Prog.

Hold on what, seriously Paul Cornell won best newcomer. I mean is there not a point were they realise that maybe editing the nominations to make them make sense might save the awards looking a bit silly.

I love Paul Cornell's writing but this is just daft.

Not wishing to cover stuff that should be in Classified I'm going to be putting a load of Ms Marvel comics onto eBay tomorrow. Including a complete run of the first series... you know if people want to see how insanely hot she is!
