General / A Gift For My Girlfriend
12 September, 2012, 12:47:44 AM
Today, I gave my girlfriend this Simon Fraser Nikolai Dante commission:

As you might imagine, she was pretty pleased. More pics over on my blog: http://lrgcarter.blogspot.co.uk/2012/09/the-awesomeness-of-simon-fraser.html

Creative Common / Gallery Websites
25 January, 2012, 05:10:17 PM
Hi all, I'm pretty sure this has been asked before, so apologies for the repetition, but...

I'm looking to create an online gallery of some of my art work, and I'm looking for advice on what sort of sites are best for this.

I'm not keen on Deviant Art, as it always seems to take forever to load on my cheep and cheerful laptop. I'm not looking for anything complicated, just a way of saying "here is some of my art, enjoy". I just want it to look clean and simple.

I already use blogger, so if there is some corner of that site that I haven't discovered yet which fulfils this purpose, that would be cool too.

Thanks in advance!

Creative Common / Books On Drawing Perspective
20 September, 2011, 08:39:45 PM
Not sure if this should be here or the Help section, but I'm sure the mods can move it if I have chosen poorly.

I have a birthday coming up, and my girlfriend has begun hassling me for pressie ideas. I was thinking I could do with a good reference book on perspective, but a quick Amazon search has left me drowning in choice.

So, I have decided to come here for some good recommendations. Any ideas?

QuoteThe war on terror has been lost!

This new horror anthology collection, due for release in time for Christmas 2011, will feature horror stories that deal with warfare as its central theme, backdrop or characters. From the Horror of the Home Front, the Golems of AuschWitch, the Battle of Slaughterloo, the Terror in the Trenches and the Creatures of the Beastern Front, we want your stories!

My girlfriend recently pointed me in the direction of this, and I thought of this place I know which might harbour some interested parties.

Can't remember if it was talked about here when it was on last October, but I enjoyed it greatly, so thought I would link to it here.

Help! / An Art Request
02 August, 2010, 09:33:21 PM
Does anyone have any scans of those pictures of the script/art droids that used to appear on things like the Best Of 2000ad Monthly, and the like?

I've been entering all sorts of search terms into google, but to no avail. I just know that one of you lot will come along and say, "they're right here, on this other thread on this very board," but that's what I get for being web illiterate.

Creative Common / Ultimate Sacrifice
22 July, 2010, 06:49:32 PM
In order to get into the routine of drawing on a regular basis, I have decided to try and do something akin to the National Novel Writing Month. I have set myself the task of drawing one five page comic every month, for the rest of the year. I know this isn't a particularly professional pace, but we all have to start somewhere.

I was lucky enough to have been sent some scripts by Legendary Shark Mark Howard, so I picked his story Ultimate Sacrifice to start with. One thing worth noting is that this script has no dialogue, simply a barrage of gun sound effects.

Well, here goes...

Off Topic / A Question About Helicopters
25 March, 2010, 10:28:37 PM
Hi all. I have a question about the following photo, and thought someone here might have the answer, being as the knowledge contained within these pages is diverse and varied and the like.

So, those vaguely cylindrical/conical bits above the doors and below the propellers, what are they?‏

Thanks.

Other Reviews / Volgan Wars 2
05 February, 2010, 01:53:14 PM
Anyone else got Volgan Wars 2 yet?

I picked mine up this morning. Sat down thinking "I'll just read a few pages before getting stuck into other things I need to do today." So, those few pages turned into all the pages, and as such I thought I'd start off a review thread!

Now, I haven't read book 3 or any of the fourth book yet, due to accidentally stopping to collect the progs a while back and having yet to catch up, so my view is free of any knowledge of what is to come.

Mills is one of those droids that you either love or hate, and I know there are those who want the Warriors put out to pasture. As such, the best review I can give is this: If you loved the first collection, you'll love this. I did, and I do. I loved the story when it was first published, and the collection meets the same standard of both the previous book, and the Slaine BoI collections. The artwork is clearer in these books, and as before there are extra little scenes that add to the story telling as well as providing pretty pictures. Don't let me give you the impression that I like this for the art and nothing more. I love the plot here, and this story nicely embellishes thecharacters and world building, but it is the same story as was printed a few years back, so I'm guessing most of you have already formed your own opinion.

There is a curious new picture of Zippo's targeting/mobile phone thingy that raises all sorts of questions. Has Lash sent Zippo to scout out all the different Warriors, collecting information for them as he prepares to assemble the team to bring peace to Mars? If so were the Icon and the dude Deadlock killed in his story originally meant for the team? Are we to assume that Zippo had already been spying on Mongrol before they actually met, given that Blackblood's story is happening before Mongrol's? Is Zippo making use of the time travel possibilities of the ABC meta-physics?

Answers on a postcard, or better yet, on this thread! And lets not have anyone claiming the artist made a mistake, that would be really dull.

General / The Best Way To Buy
14 January, 2010, 12:05:58 PM
Hi all,

I have recently been considering the way that I spend money, and how to make my cash best benefit those whose cause I wish to support.

It is my understanding that subscriptions to 2000ad are preferred by Tharg as the best way of getting the Prog, as they ensure that he gets the biggest cut of the cash pie (though please, correct me if I'm wrong).

Is there an equivalent "best way" to get the collected trades? For the past year I have been dipping my toes into buying things on this new fangled internet thing everyone seems to be using these days. However, while I initially welcomed the cheap prices of such places as Amazon, I now wonder if my purchases are doing more harm than good.

By buying these cheap goods, am I reducing the amount of cash Tharg gets? Is there a source of these goods that gives Tharg more money than any other?

I realise that many prefer to support their local Thrill-merchant, and it is the failure of my own local (Boarders) that has got me thinking about these things. Is there anywhere else in York that sells a good collection of tooth stuff?

(I would go to Travelling Man, but have found them pretty un-helpful in the past. This, and the fact that they give more shelf space to 40K novels (1 shelf, last time I was in there) than 2000ad (less than 1 shelf), leads me to guess I'm not in their target market. I genuinely wish them the best in making money elsewhere.)

General / Dante Collections
05 June, 2008, 09:18:13 AM
Hello all,

I was in Boarders the other day trying to order some of the Dante collections, and they seemed of the opinion that the first two were now out of print.

Now, if my memory serves me correctly, the first two were printed with DC, but then the partnership deal failed and so Rebellion published the next few on their own. I also remember that the paper and printing quality improved when Rebellion went solo, though I may just be imagining this.

If I'm not imagining any of the above, then if the first few books do go out of print, will they get republished with the nicer paper and printing of the later books?

Borrowing these books from one of our mates has got my girlfriend hooked on 2000ad, and I would love to get her copies of all the trades, but I am wary of buying the old ones at this point just in case they suddenly come out looking all shiny in a few months time!

General / Live Journal Icons
10 May, 2008, 01:44:01 PM
Hi all, I have a request for all those of you whose scanners and progs are in close vicinity.

I have recently been introducing my girlfriend to 2000ad, and it has been going down well. In fact, she wants some Live Journal icons based around various characters, so I was wandering if anyone would be kind enough to post some images that would be suitable for such a use.

I'm looking for some good colour images of Walter, and Dante (In her words: "Dante when he was cute, not shaved head Dante).

The images will end up being about 100 pixels squared, so any larger images would still need to be recognisable when reduced.

Thanking you all in advance, you'll make a new fan very happy.

General / Thanks PVS!!!
02 April, 2008, 12:43:52 PM
Yesterday, I returned to York from the distant lands of Cornwall to find a big brown package laid out on my desk (Hmm, upon re reading that, I wonder if I shouldn't be sending this to input to get the poo points).

It turned out to be a copy of Charley's War book one, which I had won in a competition over on PVS's Charley's War website.

Not only that, but he also sent me Omnivistascope 3, complete with the Hawk The Slayer interview!

So here is a great call of thanks to PVS. I still have a few days off work, so will be setting time aside to enjoy this all in one go.

Thank you!!!!

General / ABC Trades Question
02 February, 2008, 06:19:15 PM
Hi there.

The other day I brought Hellbringer. At the end of it is the story from Prog 2000, claiming to be the first part of the next graphic novel.

Does this mean the next trade is going to start with another reprint of that same story, or will it start with  the next one, which I seem to remember was called The Third Element?

General / From Grace Graphic Novel
16 November, 2006, 05:05:04 AM
Hi there, I'm currently looking for a copy of the From Grace graphic novel from a while back that I'm almost sure actually existed.

Only problem is, I can't get the internet to admit to this existence.

So, did it really exist, or am I going mad?

If it does exist, how can I get hold of a copy?

I notice that theres a Storming Heaven collection coming out soon, but the problem is that I want this as a present for my girlfriend. She loved the Necronaughts collection I got her, and I reckon she'll also love From Grace. She would probably also like A Love Like Blood and Storming Heaven.

On the other hand, there is no way in hell I could ever give her Reefer Madness, Monsters of Rock or Mars Needs Mates without her turning round and saying "what kind of shit is this you read and are trying to pass off as some sort of ill conceived present???"

I want to give her a good impression of 2000ad, and as such am willing to sacrifice the other two main stories to avoid admitting that those three smaller stories never happened.

It is possibly worth noting that I am at present quite pissed. The idea is at present a fleeting fancy, and perhaps when I awake I will see the humor in these three stories and decide to wait till the new book comes out.

However, From Grace is, in my opinion anyway, by far the best of that lot, and a lovely thing to have on its own, whereas I can just poke my old back progs at her if I want her to read the other stories.

So, I'll stop rambling now and go to sleep. Anyone out there able to help my quest?

General / Lawmasters
26 October, 2006, 11:44:34 AM
Inspired by the thread about flying lawmasters, I thought I might recount events I experienced this summer.

I was working as a labourer and one of the guys I was working with had this collossal moterbike. I mean, it was really big! The first thing i thought when I saw it was "wow, suddenly the size of Dredd's bike doesn't seem so implausible". Then the sparky turned up and said "bloody hell, thats like Judge Dredd's bike", so I know I wasn't suffering strange delusions or anything.

A few weeks later, conversation turned once more to motorbikes, specifically those biker convention type things where they all meet up and look at each others bike while stroking their manly beards.

"How come you don't go to those things?" asked one of my coleages to the owner of the Collosal Bike.

"Well," he replied, "mainly cause mines a scooter"

It was then I realised the horrible truth behind the Lawmaster.

It's not a bike!

Its a sccooter!

If this secret were to ever get out amoung the people of MC1 it would shake Justice Department to the core!!!

My mate has this board game he's made, and i thought some people here might be interested.

It has a website, but knowing my computer illiteracy, this will be broken:

General / Classic films and 2000AD
21 July, 2004, 01:25:24 AM
I was just thinking about how classsic films would be so different if they had a little 2000AD cameo or replacement star, or some such.

the main inspiration for this was the image of Mek Quake bursting into the shower room in Psycho.

any other amusing thoughts on this sort of thing?
