Well a very significant week in the tournament as we enter Round 3 after the seemingly unending Round two. We’re down to the last 128 thrills and from here the quality will step up, but the choices start to get harder. But the lovely thing about this round is there is still plenty of room for mis-matches…

Two classic thrills known for having distinct periods. Dan Dare who conquered Hewligan’s Haircut in Round 2 (after a bye in the 1st round) time in the Prog was more condensed, with Belardinelli madness, quickly followed by ‘Space Fortress’ which led into Space claw. We each have our fav. Robo-Hunter - who s.l.a.y.e.d. Bob the Galactic Bum - has its classic period, which is surely 98% of folks memory of the series; Millar muck and Hogan healing. The key question here I suppose do folks just ignore the eras they don’t like?

Just reply in this thread naming your favourite thrill of these two series at the beginning of your post (or use Bold tags so I can spot it easily) and say what you like about these wonderful stories after that.

Match ends early on the morning of Friday 13th May and the winner gets a place in Round 4 (of 9!!!).

What on Earth is ALL of this?

Prog / Prog 2281 - Guilt Trip
« on: 09 May, 2022, 09:09:48 PM »
Back to the Prog proper and a shift in line-up. Not a massive one, but enough to feel the difference.

Dredd Niemand and Foster return to Asher, the ex-Titan con. Who while working on a cleaning duty, see some slack judging that could be indicitive of much more. Its a gloriously steady start with the first twist of tension, this one will be getting much tighter I suspect.

Brink a police interview, Maslow calls HSD bluff and Bardot pays a price. dpesn't sound much but its brilliant.

Hope more interviews, more insights into 'Hollywoods' underbelly, more dark consequences - see above.

Dexter this thrill might be suffering from choppy scheduling, might be being trampled under it ambition being stifled but openers like this, with its grim forboding allow us to at least see the potential that we lost. Great episode.

Fiends Ouch! Its all chains and poking and burning and nasty... see above.

However good Mayflies may or may not end up being, Ant Wars is at this moment superior. Because it is GIANT KILLER ANTS TAKING OVER THE WORLD! And ain't nothing better than that. Can I get an Amen?

SBT

AMEN!

Testify brother.

Mayflies certainly has potential, but it’s done relatively little so far. I’m not an Ant Wars fan, but it more or less wins this for me by default.

I'm with IP on this: Ant Wars is alright, but can't really see how it can't be better than Mayflies which has been just two episodes, months apart. And doesn't have any giant ants in it.

Pretty sure you both actually mean 'cos its GFD's best work for Tharg?

Really tough this one, I'm trying to keep it to the stories specifically in the Regenes as the ones that have broken out have an unfair advantage if not. So on that basis:

Pandora Perfect
Mayflies
Department K

Splorers deserves a place and Chopper would have gone one if the latest story there wasn't so much weaker than the first. There are loads of others well worth a mention too.

Not sure I understand:

“ I'm trying to keep it to the stories specifically in the Regenes as the ones that have broken out have an unfair advantage if not”

as you have voted for Pandora Perfect and Dept K, both of which have transferred to the main Prog.

Yeah so I'm voting purely on the basis of the PP and DK stories that appeared in the Regened issues, rather than the runs in the Prog. Pandora Perfect's two stories in the Regenes have still be the highlight of those specials for me. Does that make sense?

Like this one. Titanic ants in what now must be unarguably GFD’s greatest work (ahem); Ant Wars having taken out Cal-Hab Justice and then Zancudo in a one-sided local derby. While the short lived Mayflies has only had to buzz past Detonator X and the derided Wireheads. Who will triumph in this clash of the insects?

…not this first tie however as we get two fantastic thrills coming head to head; exemplifying some of the really tough decisions that will need to be made. Both of these had byes in Round 1 and have experienced tricky ties in Round 2, Leatherjack beating another classic self contained story Chiaroscuro; Hope having to take down Young Death. For one this will be a contest too tough…

That's a shame, but entirely understandable, you've burnt through ideas with all the great votes you've run. Fingers crossed the break helps you come up with more, but either way thank you for the fun to date... speaking of which I have one I've not done...

Interesting this broke on ITV. BBC have the story up now. Have to be honest don't know him so no thoughts either way. Fingers crossed he's served by better material than Hodie was and all the gammon fans burnt themselves out when she was picked.

Ohhh we had 'The Cave of Time'. Am I right in thinking these didn't have a combat system? If so I think that's why we never (we being my brother and I) never got into them.

General / Forum's Favourite Thrill - Round 3
« on: 08 May, 2022, 10:44:10 AM »
Soooooo Round 2 saw 256 thrills face off over 128 ties, which covered the best part of 5 months... yes 5 f*~@kin' months. I'm nothing if not relentless.

We saw some pretty horrible ties and the world isn't fair as while thrills like Dry Run and the Rogue Trooper Reboot will feature in Round 3, some stone cold GREAT thrills have fallen already. Devlin Waugh, Stainless Steel Rat, Zombo Hershey, Hewligan's Haircut will not grace this round. The draw is a cruel, unforgiving beast.

So what will Round 3 look like... well pretty much exactly the same to be honest, you'll barely notice the difference. I type (or Copy and Paste if I'm hones) Round 3 instead of Round 2 at the end of each thread title. Look out for the thrilling addition hey. I mean its shorter as well, thank f**k, but that's about it!

There are 128 Thrills left - Meaning 64 ties.

I estimate with a fair wind behind us that it will take us 8 weeks and we’ll be done… that should take us into mid July... if we start now…

...as I say above I'm nothing if not relentless so we'll do just that and I'll see ya Monday!
