I'm guessing I'm not the only person on these boards (not that I post very often) who has small children? And I'm guessing further that most fellow parents spend more time than they had ever expected to watching channel 71, aka CBeebies, aka the baby/toddler channel from the BBC?

Anyway, it's only fairly recently dawned on me that two of the better shows on this channel are the product of 2000 AD alumnus Steve Roberts. I'm a massive fan of Dipdap, which at the risk of dumbing it down too much is like a 2D Morph, but generally reminds me that 5 minute cartoons can still be great pieces of work. I gather he also works on the rather charming Abney & Teal, along with the likes of Simon Gurr.

Anyway, both are recommended - Dipdap indeed I'd recommend to anyone who simply likes cartoons, regardless of needing the excuse of a young child to watch them with.

I watch dipdap with my nephews, aged four and two. all three of us absolutely love it and have a great time watching it.

David Bishop writes some of the Nina and the Neurons too.

Alan Grant wrote episodes of Ace Lightning. For no good reason, I remember the hero of a broom cupboard-era show called Gruey (i) reading prog 549 in one scene, but that's not really what this thread's about. Neil Morrissey's character in Boon was shown reading an issue of 2000ad Monthly and exclaiming "Nemesis the Warlock!", even though I'm pretty sure the issue featured didn't actually contain any Nemesis stories. But that wasn't even a kids' show, never mind a BBC kids show.

(i) Gruey was played by Kieran O'Brien, who went on to become the first actor to actually fuck on screen in Michael Winterbottom's 9 Songs, which felt a bit incongruous.

For certain values of 'actor'.

I was going to say the first actor to fuck on screen and appear on CBBC, but then I remembered Peter Duncan's porn career.

Steve Green

We might end up with Burdis and co. on CBBC in May, since they were filming a show at LSCC a week or so ago...

I genuinely love it that Dave Bishop, responsible for comissioning some of my favourite thrills, is now writing Nina And The Neurons. Can't explain why in so many words, maybe it was just the fact that I've enjoyed both seperately and then found out they're linked.

(You know... 'enjoy' Nina and The Neurons... my son watches it, I watch it with him, it's OK etc etc)

Oh, and Dipdap is great too.

And Abney and Teal creeps me out.

I've only seen the adverts for Nina and the Neurons, I'll have to check it out!

Wow! Some awesome find on this thread! My kids (boy and girl, 5 and 3 respectively) love some of the shows outlined above. Nina and the Neutrons is a favourite of my son as he's into all the sciencey and adventure stuff (Tree Fu Tom, Octonaughts also included) besides, i think Nina is kinda cute!  :D , I also love Abney and Teal; the stop motion/ animation work is really nicely done.

But what my daughter really loves above all else is Mr. Tumble! I wish the BBC could do a future episode where Justin takes the kids on a tour of Mega City 1!  or Mr.Tumble can dress up as an MC1 Judge; Judge Tumble!

The thing is (and I'm off on a tangent here) when I was a kid you'd hear reference to certain presenters being 'One for the Dads'. In my day if often in conjunction with a Blue Peter presenter, or say Sally James or Sarah Green, whomever. Now I always though that was a bit weird, I mean why would your Dad watch some kids TV just cos of some presenter or other.

Now I'm the Dad and I completely get it of course. You got no choice about watching it, but there's certainly some presenters who make it more bearable!

haha, yep. I fully understand the 'one for the Dads' concept now. It got bad enough that I started googling whether they were married.

Take a trip to Beachcomber Bay and Casey-Lee Jolleys will polish your bell. Look what we've done to what was such a sweet thread.
