Title: Board Competition - Redesign Judge Dredd
Post by: Mr D on 11 February, 2004, 07:19:42 PM
The Task:

Ok, we all know who I'm talking about. He's one of the most popular characters in 2000AD - but let's face it, he was designed in the 70s! I'm SURE that you could improve him....
We're looking for overall look for the most part, but things that you'd change with his world to go with your new look Dredd will be a handy bonus!
Either written or drawn entries will be accepted! Give it a go!

The Prizes:

There will be 5 prizes - I'll let you know what they are soon - of various quality. The only one I can confirm before this evening when I get home is Top Ten Book 1.

The Closing Date:

This comp is going to run for a month to let everyone have a bash, and to try and make sure as few people as possible miss it! So the closing date is the 11th March 2004. Noon.

Have fun!

Ha ha!

I'll definitely enter.

I may even buy Crayola crayons just to draw him.

Well done, Dribbler!

I haven't really got the time to have a real stab at this tonight, but I knocked this up for fun, nothing too radical, a mix of old, new, super hero and Chief Judge.

Ok, initial prizes are as follows:

Gordon Rennie's Dredd Vs Death book
Our very own Gordon Rennie takes the plot of the Judge Dredd game, and makes it good! With far more backplot, and featuring all your Dredd faves, it's a really surprisingly great read!

Top Ten Book One
Need I really say any more?

Tom Strong Book 2
Alam Moore's ABC (America's Best Comic's) hero's second GN, with ANOTHER collection of great stories. And people who don't read ABC? Well, in Mr Strong's words, 'They're just scum Timmy'

Spiderman Strikes Back!
It's cheesy, it's classic, it's terrible but disturbingly watchable.... It's the original live action Spiderman movie!! Win a copy today!

The Complete Apocalypse War (unconfirmed)
Again... What more can I say?

Title: Re: Board Competition - Redesign J...
Post by: Bolt-01 on 13 February, 2004, 12:54:04 PM
Oh yes, its not easy.

The problem is that the basic image of Dredd is so strong, everything else comes off as diluted.

hmmm....

Bah, mini bolt has done 3, count 'em, different versions overnight. Pah!

Interesting challenge though this is, my attempts at coming up with an image have all ended with me remembering how great it is to draw original costume Dredd and therefore doing a sketch of just that.

What to change? Erm nothing it's just too embedded in my mind. The man and the costume are one.

This is why I'll accept text entries!! When you actually draw a new version of such an established character, it might seem 'wrong'. So I suggest you start from scratch with drawn designs (not start again, but forget his current costume entirely and build on your ideas of a good 'judge' costume) or write your ideas down!

But you don't have to

Dredd should be designed by a 12-year-old anyway.

Having met the 12-year-old in question, by the way, I can't see him taking any kind of unfair advantage of his age (like, for instance, getting artists to do extra sketches for his Dad at Dreddcon)...

Most of these fan drawings still look like they were drawn in the 70's.

That last one even looks like he has wild west leg chaps!

The original design is timeless of course but shouldn't we be trying to design uniforms that are more reflective of how we view futuristic cop fashion from the viewpoint of 2004, not trying to remould the "Carlos" 70's look.
Title: Re: Board Competition - Redesign J...
Post by: Matt Timson on 15 February, 2004, 08:12:23 PM
It's a bit awkward really.  I think Carlos's original helmet design was meant to be based on a hood- as in Judge, Jury and Executioner- which is kind of hard to improve upon.

It seems logical that the character would wear some sort of helmet- if only for protection (and it's also a bit hard to get around the fact that we never see Dredd's face, so nobody seems to want to come up with a design that doesn't incorporate a way of hiding it- even though that probably wasn't part of the original brief).

You can't really go with a face covering helmet as you'd then have the problem of a totally expressionless Judge- which really only leaves a variation on the helmet he already has- or you just design him with a face and be done with it.

I think that's what I'm going to do.  If I get time!

Post by: Bolt-01 on 15 February, 2004, 09:11:48 PM
They aren't Wild west chaps, instead they are an area of increased padding (or some such...) as he rides around on a dirty great motorbike and it must really wear away at the inner thighs.

Or maybe he just likes Christina Aguilera.

it's a pisser innit?  i like mini bolts drawing, and your own.  I'm cursing at everyone who has flashy arty software on their computer, i have  none of this, you will just get a sketch from me...sigh...sketches always look crap when you scan them onto a computer....

i am having a problem though.  when i scan, the picture always emnds up bloody massive, like a billion times bigger than what i drew.  does anyone know how i fix this?
Title: Re: Board Competition - Redesign J...
Post by: Buddy on 16 February, 2004, 02:05:52 PM
VampiraJen, when scanning a pic for web use make sure the resolution of the image is 72 dpi.

Sounds like your resolution is bigger than required for screen use (the scanner probably defaults to 200dpi or something like that).

Hope this helps.
Title: Re: Board Competition - Redesign J...
Post by: CraveNoir on 16 February, 2004, 05:09:40 PM
With respect, you should really scan at a DPI higher than 72. Then you can be sure that all the details are captured from the start, and they should still be quite readable even when you've shrunk the picture.

If it's a pencil sketch, or monotone linework then you can scan in grayscale, open the saved image in an image editing program, resize it, and save this smaller version as a GIF or JPG.

A Google search for 'image editing' and 'resize' will yeild many small shareware programs that'll do the job. If you want something more robust I'd recommend downloading an evalution version of Paint Shop Pro.

Instead of trying to come up with a new Dredd based on what we know you should try and work off what Carlos was told back in 1976.

?When Pat Mills asked you to come up with the visuals for Judge Dredd what were his instructions if any, on how this character should look??
?I don't remember very well after so many years, but were something like this: 'is a menacing policeman dress in black and driving a motorbike'?

well the little nose and the chin is kind of based on FLint's Dredd. The upper half....i could have sworn i saw a shadowy shot of Dredd's face where you saw he was basically bald with little bits of hair sticking out of his head.

Notice that a lot of the redesigns still prominently use the eagle and was just wondering if you really were doing Dredd from scratch would the eagle be as prominent. Carlos took his eagle of a Spanish coin and not from anything American and f you were coming up with Dredd?s look and not just altering what Carlos came up with in 1976 would the chains feature at all.

I know it was a coin minted in Franco?s time, all the pesetas from 1 upwards have the same Eagle on its just the number that is different, so could possibly be something like this 50 peseta coin.

I'm so depressed now, as i realise it isn't original enough.  However tried to re-draw it is a less static kind of a way.  The reason i kept the eagle is because we're re-vamping dredd not the whole justice dept, and the eagle is predominant in it as a symbol of justice.

This is, of course, pish as i didn't spent any more than five minutes on it, hence the reason his arms aren't quite right, i couldn't fit his gun in and magneto has gone to town with his helmet.
Title: Re: Board Competition - Redesign J...
Post by: VampiraJen on 20 February, 2004, 05:28:18 AM
and since a few other people have been doing dredd without a helmet i thought i'd give it a go.

i am, of course, taking the piss.

Can I try?

Unfortunately I am totally crap at drawing unless I am copying something so I thought I'd try the descriptive method (Mr dribbles did say it would be okay buit no-one esle has tried it yet)

OK.  First of all we see the streets of megacity 1.  A hover bike speeds down the street.  (Deliberate choice of bike over a car, and nowadays i feel that a bike would automatically hover - please note, hover not fly).

It does have to look imposing though.  It would be broad and long - longer at the front than at the back (yeah this could be going a little phallic).  A series of high powered lights to blind/terrify the perps.  Either side would still contain the cannons and the lazers.  The bike is coloured black with gold coloured trimming.

The bike stops and Dredd gets off.  He appears big and broad and the chin is still there.  He wears a helmet (he rides abike, he comes under fire, a helmet would be sensible.)  The helmet is black with gold trim again.  it has a mic for communication. (I toyed wiht the idea of built in communication circuits built into the skull but visually this would be uninteresting.)  the helmet also has some of small camera built into it (although this could be hidden) for use to track down lost judges, see what they last saw, transmit images back to base, for use in anoying "Police camera Action" style shows.

The unifrom is unifrmly black, both shoulders, chest and back are protected by  alighter grey/black rounded padded armour (supplemented underneath by armour plateing).  This gives a greater feeling of bulk and more menacing intimidating image to scare the perps.  Smaller plates cover the abdomen.  Over the heart area is is a circular gold badge with a star within (standard police image/identity), emblazoned across the star is the name Dredd (for easy recognition by the public of who they are).

The belt across the waist contains all the usual equipment along with one of those daysticks that snap out to full length and probably has a tazer effect to it when it strikes someone.  the belt buckle would be fasioned around an image of a bald headed eagle (another popular american image).

A large pair of imposing, steel toecapped boots will help to finish off the image.

Hope folk can be arsed to read all that.

Priv8eye - i COULD be arsed to read it all and am gutted you won't draw it.

Johnny  - *mummble, mummble* and once again with the jealousy

Woolly - keeewwwwllll!

Wadew - if you didn't ink, why does it look so bloody marvelous?

Anyway, another one.  this is the last one, the one i'm reasonably happy with this one.  think of it as a journey from the dredd we know and love to the one i've 'designed' (use that word loosly)  i wasn't going to go with the round helmet thing, but it looked different to the dredd we get these days, tried to channel t-1000 and not YMCA.  have tried to go for biker boy style, leather trousers and jacket, and a few of the things i did in the last drawings.

Earth; a barren, broken land. Mutants and monsters roam freely through the ruins of the once proud cities of the future.

Law and order have long been defeated and now the only rule is that of survival.

That may be changing

Rumours speak of a newcomer to the land, a mighty warrior with a fierce mind. The rumour has begun that he is only the first, that soon the Mega-city will be rebuilt.

Dare the people hope?

The gangs of the wasteland are gathered, planning. They talk of his attacks, how he is a robot. They talk of the power of his guns and the steel of his voice.

A voice calls from the heart of the meeting. A warning is given. The gangs attack, but they are swept aside by the fury of iron, the heat of his guns.

Finally it is over, and the warrior is holding the leader of the gangs. He raises his weapon arm, smoke still rising from the chambers.

?DECISION?? Roars the massive droid, and then a nimble form climbs into view. Gasps are heard when the creature speaks.

?Guilty, by the power vested in me, I sentence you to death. Blow the creep away, Joe.?

Word spreads, a Judge is in town. And it has brought Dredd with it.

Gary, that picture is scary, in a bad way.

Why does Dredd have 'white' stuff dripping from his daystick, is that subtext?

Well executed and designed, I definately would be scared of a judge with a 'face' like that.

Then I read Logan's post and got thinking.

A misunderstanding over a bad telephone line gave us Godzilla and Donkey Kong so what if that had happened with Dredd.

Hi all!

Not posted on this thread for a while, as I thought I'd let it grow a bit. Some magnificent ideas so far! And don't worry if you can't draw, it's ideas over artwork.

Two things I'm going to mention though, if you have any comments (or offers) then email me!

1. Judging
Ok, I originally intended to judge this myself. But I've decided that it isn't fair as I have my own preconceptions of what Dredd 'should be' from reading the stories.
Therefore, I'm going to give a group of 10 non-scrots an outline of what Dredd is supposed to be, and see what they like best. If you want them to consider your Dredd in a different light to the basic scenario, tell me!

Prizes
I only have THREE prizes now. I'll be keeping it at 3 awards unless any are donated! So it's even HARDER!

The picture Adrian Bamforth wryly posted is of Marvel's US Agent.

His current costume has been the subject of debate on the boards/newsgroup as it appears to share some motifs with Dredd's uniform.

Right, it's a bit messy and the anatomy's all over the shop, but here's my explanation for this one ...

I thought I'd answer two questions with this one:

1) What would Dredd look like if the characters were created now?

and

2) What would have happened if Dredd had sent Vienna to the Academy and he then copped (no pun intended) it?

Well, as far as I'm concerned, Dredd would probably be a kick-ass bitch with a big gun and even bigger attitude if the character were created today. I know this sounds an awful lot like Durham Red ... but work with me here ;o)

So there you go.

Now I have to get back to the piles of artwork I neglected in favour of trying to beat Timson's half-arsed efforts ;oP

(BTW, many thanks to loverly bloke Blackthrash for the hosting space - also to Mr Si Gurr for hosting my Dreddrophenia pic earlier ....)

It's a doodle based on a thought I've been carrying around in my head for many years. The idea (if you can call it that) came about as a result of my fears when I heard there was to be a US (DC) produced version of Dredd way back in '94.

In 1718, an ill-assorted group of privateers and general scurvy scum made their last stand on a small island in the Caribbean against the forces of King Richard IV. Officially, they lost.
For the next 400 years, rumours abounded of a lost city of free souls hidden in the thick swamps of that same island, La Escondida. A utopian community without laws, English speaking, but with strange devices unlike any of English manufacture. It was said that the pirates had used their vast wealth to buy their freedom from the British king, and had dedicated themselves to scientific endeavour. Fringe historians even speculated that the fire-weapons that had enabled the British to overcome the First American Revolt in 1778 had been of Escondidian manufacture.
In the 21st century, the Second American Revolt brought new fire from the skies. Mutation and disease followed in its wake, a gigadisaster the like of which had never been known. The non-aggression treaties between the British and Ottoman Empires collapsed, and the planet was plunged into the Great War. In the aftermath, the pirates of Escondida emerged from myth to command the North American continent.
Their anarchist police state is maintained by the rule of the Captains - unsleeping watchers of freedom. The Captains uphold the Two Articles of the Escondidan State:
1) Citizens may always be permitted to do as they please
2) No citizen may harm another nor cause another to be harmed
The penalty for breaking the articles is to be put to the sword. The penalty for plotting against the state is also to be put to the sword. The rulers of Mega-Escondida are a secretive and self-perpetuating oligarchy known as the Admirals.
The greatest of the upholders of the Articles is Captain Dredd. In anarchist Escondida, He Is The Law!

Judge Dredd was conceived in 1977, at the height of one of the bleakest periods of UK civil unrest.  Strike action, race riots, even the gravediggers were on strike.  The attraction of the iron rule of the Law is very clear, and the writers' ambivalence towards to the concept makes for an unusual mixture of grit and parody.

But what is Dredd had been created 8 years later?

To set the scene: The Falklands war has just given Britain its first unquestioned military victory in 40 years.  The miners' strike has been crushed under the stiletto heels of a newly strident capitalism, a group of hungry traders is shaking up the City, America is an aspirational dream and the threat of nuclear war with Russia seems to be receding with its new leader's talk of perestroika.  A little-known comics writer called John Wagner has been commissioned to create a "future cop" series for new launch title 2000AD.  Now read on...

Joe Dredd is cruising along in his metallic pink open-topped sky vehicle, his trademark curly blond hair smoothed back by the wind, his sleeves rolled up.  He is chatting on a futuristic hand-held communications device while his other hand expertly guides the steering wheel.  It's a beautiful day to be in Mega-City One by the beach, and Joe enjoys checking out the bikini-clad babes roller-skating past, moving to the sound of the pumping rock music from his in-car stereo.  His chin juts forward as his partner, "Funky" Giant, fills him in on an unsolved homicide.

"Yo, baby", says Giant, "We got a ten-four, looks like the creep's comin straight outta the Undercity".

Dredd pulls the wheel and the car swings sharply round, disrupting traffic on the freeway.  A ten-four meant an unauthorised homicide of an Overdweller by a Norm or, in this case, someone even lower down the food chain.

This was why his father, Commissioner Fargo, had rebranded the privatised NYPD as the Judge Force in the first place.  It was a way of recognising that the trader overlords of the city were now officially above the Law.  Old "crimes" such as insider dealing or fraud could be dealt with internally, and the mega-city didn't have the funding to lock up creeps who committed anti-social acts.  The Judges united the functions of investigator, prosecutor, judge and executioner in one easy-to handle package.  A Judge was trained almost from the moment of birth to maintain rigid discipline among the Norms, or "citizens" as they had once been called.  To be a Judge was to serve, unquestioningly, but also to be the only order of Elite to mix with all levels of society.

Banishment to the Undercity was one of the three sentences that Judges were empowered to carry out: the others were fines and immediate execution.  The Undercity, formed by concreting over ghetto neighbourhoods, was a savage environment, ruled by gangs who didn't even fear the Judges.  For an Undercity dweller to have somehow broken through the carefully-guarded walls of the Elite and even worse to have successfully escaped was bad enough.  A homicide was almost unthinkable.

Joe calls Maria, his landlady and occasional girlfriend.  "Sorry, sweetheart, but I'm gonna havta take a raincheck on that pizza.  We got one bad case goin' down out here."

Dredd pulls his Lawgiver from inside his jacket, and sets the digital face to "Kill"...

I've collected all the entries so far (including images that don't appear now for whatever reason) but I'm hoping there will be a few more to add to it! There'll be a judging period of a day or two, then the results will be announced.

Get cracking!! It Ends...

All Judges are cloned from existing gene stock, with weaknesses such as compassion, mercy and hesitation completely bred out of them.  They are bio-mechanically engineered to be born with various cybernetic enhancements (such as their eyes, for example).  They are many times stronger than a normal man, feel no pain and are highly resistant to impact, heat, cold, radiation- you name it.  There are thirteen standard models, the thirteenth being the most ruthless, efficient and downright brutal: the Dredd model.  Even other Judges are nervous around a Dredd.

There are currently 954 Dredds out on the streets of Mega City 1, the designation of our future cop is Judge Dredd918.  He's seen a lot of action and believes firmly in 'shoot first, question whatever's left.  Even as other Judges are uneasy around them, most Dredds are equally uneasy around Dredd918.

HE is the Law- and you'd better drokkin' believe it...

Both Lawmaster and Lawgiver will work only for a Judge and interface directly with the user.  For example, a Lawgiver has no visible trigger and will only fire under the correct thought impulses passed through the sensors built into it and a judges hand.  These same sensors allow a judge to 'see' exactly where the Lawgiver is aiming.  The Lawgiver itself fires a high intensity plasma beam that will cut through just about anything.  It has no minimum setting.

Judges do not use or need batons or handcuffs- you break the law, you will be found guilty and executed on the spot.  There are no minor misdemeanors in Mega City 1- all crimes are equal and the sentence is always the same.  Death.

This is really annoying for someone who can only draw Judge Dredd, and then - only just. However, I hope the competition judges take note of the wonderfully-detailed computer colouring.

Anyway, I figure if JD was concieved now, the uniform would be a lot more safety-conscious. It seems to me that the current outfit really isn't very handy when Judge Dredd has to do, um, stewarding.

"I need to know when to start signing JohhnyEyebrows up for every spam list I can find"

OI!  It's about ideas as much as ability you know!

Seriously, I know I draw for a living- but this kind of thing is as much fan art/fic to me as it is to the next man- (my pro work is nothing like this- see attached) and I'll be *totally* out of my depth when somebody organises a 3D comp!

To be honest, I usually only enter these things for the fun of it (except the prog 2 comp- I *really* wanted that fecker!), so I don't mind not being considered for a prize.

Well- not too much anyway!

;)

I reckon Wils has it in the bag anyway...

Hi everyone!
Well, the results are in!
I've send the info off to Wake, but I'm not saying anything till I've heard from him, so :-P

I sat in on the sesh, but only to answer questions like: 'Who's Vienna then?' and 'Who's the bloke with a dial on his head?'.
5 and a half hours. FIVE AND A HALF HOURS!!!

Many pints later, the judges shuffled home, leaving me with 5 sides of A4 covered in scribbles, drawing and god-knows what. Luckily, they had appointed a relatively sober 'Chief Judge' at my suggestion, and he'd rated the entries as they went through, taken votes, and done a great job. He even wrote a final comment for each and every one! In a scribble though.

I've spent the last 3 hours writing it in neat in an email, and I've now sent it and ALL the pics (save Wadews which has gone missing) and the text entries, and....

Well, watch this space!

It's been a laugh actually... Some of the comments are funny - but I urge people not to take some of them too seriously. Every picture had a huge admirer, for whatever reason, but they were possibly overruled!

And Mini-Bolt's gun-arm  thing caused a lot of drunken fun.... 10 grown men shooting at each other over the table, holding various items in their sleeve to make it look like they have various attachments....

Drunks!

Yes, i've heard about the design a baddie, question: do we get a blurb on the badguy(s), a bit of backstory, or are we being TOTALLY origional?

or do most people just want to get this one out of the way first and not think about the next one.
