Title: yoincks! followed closely by bah!
Post by: judgefloyd on 20 April, 2013, 11:05:40 PM
(with apologies to all the 'life is', threads..I think there's room for one more.  Sometimes life is terrific and also sucks in the same moment.  In the spirit of Viz (who took it from the Beano etc), what moments made you say yoincks! and then bah! in almost the same breath?

For me, it's been:

-realising my long held dream of teaching philosophy in a high school, only to find they don't want to pay me for it

- getting my ancient asus eeepc 701 working again with ubuntu, then finding I'm typing on  part of  the smallest screen ever known to man

as Krusty used to say...well?

*This may have been Alanis Morrisette: who wrote a whole song about Yoinks!..Bah!

that Alanis Morisette, she's always getting there first.  I don't know much about her, but I like the idea of her doing a song called 'yoincks! Bah!'

I finally got the giant Frankenstein's monster by Jack Davis poster that I've been coveting since I was a kid...and it's too big for my house

It'll have to stay tubed until I build my fortress of solitude

YOINKS!
I got an original actual full-size cinema poster of a Brando/Yul Brynner film* from 1965,- for next-to-nowt (less than a tenner) on Ebay,

:D
...it will need a custom-made frame though, which I've priced and which is going to cost about 10 times what I paid for the poster.
:'(
BAH!

*'Morituri' the title was changed to 'code-name SABOTEUR' and my poster even has a 'code name saboteur' sticker pasted over the original title !

Winning a TV contest... Only to have the entire broadcast network go into receivership 3 days afterwards so the production company didn't give me my prize.... ( not that it even had any monetary value... In fact it would have taken an visual effects guy about half an hours work on a computer) But it is the principal of the thing. Plus the fact that I think I may have been invited to the studio for a tour... They might have even arranged me to meet the then current Doctor...

I'm going the opposite way round, if that's ok.

BAH! - missing a day of work in China because of floods, and not being paid for it.
YOINKS! - realising that this was the day my workplace was raided by police hunting for illegal foreign workers (which I was), and avoiding possible Chinese prison and definite deportation.

Wow! Look after yourself, jayzuz; apparently the Chinese authorities only let Ai Weiwei out of jail because they were desperate to negotiate a new trade agreement with the Germans - I'm not sure The Emerald Isle would be able to apply the same economic or diplomatic weight on your behalf. Here's a link you probably wont be able to follow, or will lead the secret police directly to your place of refuge:

Look at it from the Crafty Sinos point of view:

<Bah! An illegal foreigner has somehow evaded our inescapable web of justice.

Yoincks! That's one less thing to worry about and leaves us time to run the world's most populous country and watch the Dredd 3D movie on bootleg dvds>

Fair point.  And another one from the Sino-Cit Justice Dept, unrelated to me:
'Yoinks!  We've got lots of money!
Bah!  Now we have a middle class who have the free time to realise they don't particularly like us!'

Anyway, enough with my derailing of the thread.  Get back to your Yoinks/Bahs, people

I teach the children of that middle class and it's very true, Jayzus.  None of them are into the Chinese govt or communism.  They don't seem to be into the nationalism like some Chinese students I had about six years ago.

Anyway, all I've got now is:

Yoincks!  New house!

Bah: Possums in the roof

followed by: Yoincks! Possum cage and a call to Peter the Possum Man has fixed that
                  Bah! There's 500 bucks I won't see again

Bah! - Dad's solicitors sent a letter saying that the firm operating the bus which was involved in an accident whilst he was on it last year (minor injuries thankfully, despite been just a metre away from where wagon hit the bus), is rejecting his claim since "there is no proof he was on the bus in question".

Yoinks! - He kept the bus ticket which clearly shows his concession pass number, and I've just got a new scanner/printer which I've been itching to put to good use.

How I love that feeling:  "But no-no-no m'sieur, shuffling documents about to your shareholders' best advantage may be your sole function, but a quick glance reveals that my mound of paper is considerably bigger than yours''.

One of my favourite aspects of my former employed existence was ending aggravating rows over invoices and authorisation with an evening spent faxing page after of my obsessively extensive handwritten site notebooks and treble-signed manual timesheets, which my opponent client's dedicated bureaucrat never seemed to have bothered to maintain.  Bwah-hah-hah-hah.

lots of buses have CCTV installed now. If this company questions the validity of the ticket it is your legal right to request copies of any recording you appear on. Just a suggestion if you require further evidence.

Yeah I've mentioned CCTV footage to dad, a copy of the ticket will show our solicitors exactly when and where dad boarded the bus so it would be quite easy to find the footage.

Yoinks!: I attended the latest (and my first) Dimension Jump Red Dwarf convention in Birmingham last weekend. A nice time overall and I came home with goodies and autographs.

Double Yoinks: I come home to find Judge Minty is on Youtube. And it was rather good.

Bah!:  First day back at work last Tuesday (one of the busiest days of the week at our college) and I ended up manning the reception desk alone. (There's usually two administrators at a time.) To be fair, it wasn't really the fault of the person who usually works with me that day as she is going through some stuff, (her 'bah!' is far greater than mine right now. I feel a bit bad even moaning about it) but usually if one person is away the other will take their shift.

Unfortunately she had been expected back that day after a week off and the changes were all rather last minute. It was too short notice for the other to change her plans so I guess it was just one of those things. In the end the day wasn't too stressful at all, but it was an irritating thing to return to after the fun. It felt like "you had Friday off, now you get to make up for it." That, and I didn't pack any lunch that day expecting I would be able to pop out to the bakery... but that would mean leaving the desk unmanned...

Small issues overall and I'm still a 'yoinks!' up on the 'bahs!'.

Yoinks!: Just had a weekend holiday in Swindon/Cotswolds area with some good friends.

Bah!: Apart from holiday being shorter than I would have liked due to work commitments* I found out yesterday that one of the other administrators had suddenly got another job elsewhere and from today I'm required to work all week.**

Yoinks!: More money. And while the week is inevitably passing more slowly now, I could do with said money. And the job isn't bad overall.

*Originally the work commitments of the lady I travelled with as she had to be back to work on Monday. When I booked the holiday I actually started work on Tuesday but I didn't want to leave her to travel by herself. Since then my first work day moved to Monday anyway so it was just as well.

** Yeah I know. Most working folk have to work five days. I'll admit I liked the freedom of having a day off between work-days though.

Bah - got to GAME with my rucksack and box stuffed with crud, and after trading in most stuff (took an hour to process) had forgotten to format/wipe my Wii U.  Had to run all the way home, format it, and head back into town again.  Made it back to the store with 5 mins before closing time.

Thanks for giving me some perspective (that's not sarcasm.) I'm not much of a looker so the notion of two women flirting with me is a wee bit of a mindfuck. :o

I'm not detecting a Bah! in this. This is not a glass half-empty v half-full situation, this is a round of drinks.

Oh, and nice one  :)

Online dating = Don't get attached. This is the same as normal dating but the effort involved to meet new people is much less, so take advantage of that. My advice is to line up as many dates as possible and see what happens.... I went on about 10 dates in the same week, never met anyone again due to either not hitting it off all that much or just incompatible schedules, but my previous approach of 'one at a time' resulted in such a waste of time.

However if you make it through to third date then don't actively pursue others, let natural attrition whittle it down. From my experience I would say the tendency for people with low self confidence in their dating prospects is to take every 'hit' far too seriously, which is self defeating.

Yup, agreed.
I did the very same - it got to a point that I needed a flow chart at one stage! Which is, at the very least, good for the ego. And you may not find love, but if you don't take it too seriously, you can have a lot of fun and make some really good friends out of the experience.

If you make it as far as a dinner date in the real world, I'd avoid Sensitive Klegg's opening gambit of "I never eat people". No lady wants to have that possibility ruled out before the dessert menu has arrived as consolation.

Yoincks!  Finally won a National Sailing Championship (admittedly in the 2nd Division) for our dinghy class. Big beautiful wooden trophy currently gracing my bookshelf will have my name engraved on it, and at the age of 43 that's first time that's ever happened to me!  Automatic promotion to the 1st Division for next year too.

Bah!  Spent the following night trying to survive the Bertha spinoffs that first soaked and then smashed our tents, then strike camp, load and transport the boat in non-stop driving downpour that followed us all the way home, and resumed drowning us we unloaded at the other end: trying to ship a 20 foot metal mast on a pier in a thunderstorm was my best shot so far at a Darwin Award...

Bah and Yoincks!  Then on the last leg home I came within a second of dying as two glombies totalled their car on the flooded motorway right in front of me and ended up spun side-on across three lanes, meaning a three lane emergency swerve'n'skid through their debris field and out the other side. Thank feck I'd forgotten that I wasn't still towing the boat and was still keeping to a sedate 90kph in the slow lane.  How they walked away from what was left I have no idea, but I didn't stop shaking for about 3 hours.

In fairness to Arrow; it's a limited edition of two films -How to Get Ahead in Advertising is included- remastered from original film elements, a ton of licensed historical and newly commissioned extras, and a 200 page hardback book*. It would cost a lot for Arrow to produce this -in the same way the complete Zenith likely wasn't cheap for Rebellion- and sell in a limited quantity that will return profit. The price seems about right considering the effort. I'm sure a vanilla version is to follow of just Withnail & I.

http://www.arrowfilms.co.uk/withnail-and-i-limited-edition/

*and this: "Available in 4 x 250 Numbered and Personalised copies (choose your favourite of four artworks as well as a name to be featured on the back and one of fifteen favourite quotes for a truly unique and personal edition!)"

And I'd say that all of the extra stuff is ott and largely pointless (dvd copies, gimmicky customisation) and is just thrown in to justify the price. The book looks nice and all but it's not something I'd buy separately. Whichever way you slice it, £50 for one film on Blu Ray is mental.

It's a shame as I'd been looking forward to this coming out. Hope you're right about the standalone release.

WH Smith's near me take delight in bouncing the prog firmly on the counter. Then crease the spine firmly as they crane to find the (increasingly) small price and bend it over the bar-code reader. I haven't yet returned this to the racks but one day.......

I was once again moaning while out with my wife this morning about the lack of thrill merchants in the area where we currently live (one shop sells battered progs and no one sells the Meg).

Just to rub that in, as soon as we got home I looked at Twitter and read that in November there is a Comic Festival in the area where lived until very recently. It's a couple of roads away from my previous three addresses. I don't recognise any of the comics and exhibitors (other than Spandex) and young prodigy comic creator Zoom Rockman http://www.thezoom.co.uk but I will definitely check it out.

Double yoinks! I was offered a contract but....

Bah: they require me to undertake a security check myself because the usual one will take too long, and they will reimburse me with my first wages.

Am I paranoid to assume this is very likely a scam?

I was actually kind of suspicious early on the moment they stated an interview probably wouldnt be required, but I let it play out as I couldn't see what they had to gain. Then when I was required to pay for the secuirty scan, I thought "Aha! There it is."

I will investigate them further but I'm pretty sure they're dodgy.

Whilst it is very strange, that they would employ somebody purely on the basis of their CV (I assume you haven't actually met them in person?), paying for a security check is pretty common nowadays.

I haven't met them. They contacted me via email in the first place.

Longer version of what happened (please bear with me, but I think you'll see why I'm suspicious).

In the first email they requested I fill in an online form specifying a time and day for a telephone interview. I booked it for a Saturday since the system allowed me to. They stated that they had had a number of other interviews but someone had 'let them down and gone to another company'. That actually set some arm bells going since it seemed rather unprofessional to go into that amount of explanation about something that's none of my business.

They didn't call back, so I assumed it was due to the Saturday appointment so I booked another appointment online for a weekday.

Shortly after that I happened to check my spam folder where there was an apology email relating to the first appointment stating that he had been unable to call as he had to go to head office but they would likely forgo the interview and offer me the job, based on my CV. (Incidentally, in the original email it was supposed to be a lady who interviewed me, not him, but I guess that doesn't mean much. Maybe he'd call and pass the phone to her, but it's an inconsistency which made me wonder..) He had to speak with his manager first to confirm it. He'd get back to me Thursday.

Then I got the exact same letter when the other appointment I had booked came up. I guess he could have just copied and pasted or set up an automated response....

Then I get another two emails stating that he had spoken to his boss and or was likely they'd give me the contract... But they would confirm the following morning... (So basically not much more information.)

Afternoon the next day I get a text and 2 duplicate  emails with contract attached. 'Dont fill in the contract yet. You'll fill in a hard copy when you start." Then the request for the security FS1 check to 'speed things up'.

To be fair the did leave a phone number I can call, but any actor can answer a call.

I haven't looked closely at the attached documents yet. I'll attempt to find out if the company and the fs1 security site is legit as well. But I'm wary when companies ask you to pay for something before you start. But you give me food for thought Spike. I know security checks were common, but I figured it was always taken care of by the company.

Concerned this is indeed a scam. You need independent evidence that the company exists as stated and is reputable.

Start by looking them up in the (online) phone book and calling their switchboard. Then ask for HR and make your concerns plain, speaking politely.

If you get this far, they will help. Good luck!

That's not too much of an issue though since they can only use those details to pay you anyway, not withdraw. That's if we're talking about just providing account number and sort code. It's if they wish to set up a direct debit you'd have to worry, but that would be a crap scam.

I know security checks were common, but I figured it was always taken care of by the company.

Where I work (A local Government authority), when I first started, they sorted out the Police/Security checks. And pretty advanced ones at that. And whenever it needs updating, they also do this for free.

But for newer starters/temporary staff, they have to pay for their own checks. And this is NOT reimbursed afterwards

Also, I've Nieces who work in the care industry, and they also have to pay for, and swallow the cost of, their own checks if they change employers.

So it would appear that having to pay for your own checks is becoming more and more common. Another way for employers to save money I guess. As I understand it, these kind of checks, are not cheap.

So, in a way, being asked to pay upfront for checks wouldn't have set any alarm bells ringing, but everything else you have stated, does. Sounds like a classic scam set-up, tbh...
This might be down purely to me not having dealt with something like this before, and the process you've stated might be more common for certain jobs etc, but still, to me, it does sound most peculiar.

Sorry, I can't be of more help, but I think you are on the right track by proceeding with caution.

I'm not sure what the process is for a company getting their phone number into the directory, but I doubt it's that rigorous.  It's not failsafe, but try the companies house register (https://www.gov.uk/get-information-about-a-company).

The company is listed with Companies House, but the company no. Provided in the offer email is not the same as the one listed at companies house. I don't know if that means anything though as their number might correspond to a different register.

There are no phone numbers that I can find at Companies House either, but I will do a search elsewhere for an online companies  phone book.

Sorry for repeat posts. In my searches I did come across this page (http://who-called.co.uk/Number/02038765166) with other people who received the same email as me...

Incidentally the name of th company is actually [deleted], which does not appear in Companies House. The name they go by [deleted], however, does. Biding really know what that means apparent from using name of existing company?

The only possible registers I can thing of are Companies House and the register of the Charity Commission.  If a private company isn't on the register of Companies House then it is not legally allowed to operate in this country.  This applies equally to large companies like the one I work for and small companies set up so that somebody can put on a gig every few months at their local pub.  The number they've given in the email could be a trading company, but I'd be wary.

Going back to the example of the company I work for - there's one main PLC and a host of other companies within that, including trading arms, manufacturing divisions and the pension scheme (standard practice - held separately so that if the main company goes bust then people still get a pension).  I'll point out here that I work for a respectable company, held in high regard - not one of those that hits the headlines on tax dodges and the like.  There should be some way to connect all the companies though - for instance in my case, the official address of all those companies (about ten in all) is the building next to the one I work in, even though some of the actual places the work is done are in other counties around the country.

I'd be wary about including the name of the company in this thread, as the 2000ADonline forum does get covered by google - and I'm guessing they're a Search Engine Optimisation company from their name?

Step away, cease communication with them - it's a scam, 100%. My employers were contacted by them a few weeks back to work on a project (for some reason, they thought we were a web-hosting company) and did a background check on them - conclusion from the check was that they are not registered at all, and the 'Digital SEO' name they use is actually an unrelated India-based company.

I suspect that the end goal with this scam is for you to submit your details to a security check company that they refer you to, and you would then pay that company....and bye bye to the cash.

Paying for your own security checks has been common for a long while I think. My girlfriend in University, a whole decade ago at this point, certainly paid for her own when she started part time work as a carer.

That's what I thought. And they contacted your employers?

Prolific aren't they. There is a company registered under the Digi name at Companies House, but not under the main company name starting with Star.

Never mind I'm starting a 4 week agency  contract tomorrow.  (Coincidentally on the same town.) I just registered at the agency.

Almost 8 - we've had about 4 years of the 'short list', and she's now coming out the other side (we hope, anyway)...she's been a bit of a ham fiend for the last few years but about a year or so ago, she tried pepperoni for the first time and it's kind of gone from there. She loves pig - bacon/ham/gammon/chops. A few weeks back we got a few sausage patties from the butcher just to try to coerce her to try a burger out. Within a week, she was munching into a home made quarter pounder with cheese/bacon. The options for meals for her have gone up massively recently.

Her little sister is the next problem - trying to coerce her to expand from chicken nuggets/pasta/sausages/chips is going to be a big problem. At least she takes on board a lot of fruit - a LOT!!

Next major step - getting the feckers to eat more vegetables!!

This sounds familiar!
My boy was a nightmare for about 8-9 years and then we took him on a cruise and he discovered the delights of many different foods (mainly off my plate!) Now he's a lot less picky and chose snails as his starter on most nights on the cruise we have just returned from. He also discovered steak on those cruises unfortunately. Vegetables is still a bit on an issue but he does love carrots and will eat broccoli and cauliflower but doesn't really like it. Those two we can get him to eat by smothering it in thick gravy or bread sauce. He's 12 now and 5 foot 7 with size 12 feet but slim so we must be doing something right.
They all get their in the end I believe. I would not touch any vegetables growing up except potatoes and would not even eat baked beans. Now the veg is the first thing I eat from my plate.

Calibre is pretty good at converting formats. Not perfect mind, but an excellent program for the price. The only problem is that you can't upload them to your kindle account any more. Or you couldn't at any rate. It just means you have to plug in the kindle reader to your computer to transfer the books.

Kobo usually handles the more universal standard .epub format, whilst Kindle uses .mobi. Caliber does this pretty well but you do often lose some continuity of formatting (paragraph spacing might look a bit jumbled somewhere, etc) but it's not so bad, usually. Some times renders it difficult to read more casually though

Yoinks! Heading out for a job interview at Media City in the morning for an opportunity i'm super stoked for.

Bah! Might have broken my wrist leaving work this afternoon and falling down a flight of stairs. In A&E right now.*

Glad to hear about the All-Clear, Jayzus.  :) I thought that the following Woody Allen gag from his stand-up days might appeal to you.

Eggs Benedict

I had once a pain in the chestal area. Now, I was sure it was heartburn, y'know, 'cause at that time I was married and my wife cooking with her nazi recipies, y'know, chicken Himmler.

I didn't wanna pay twenty five bucks to have it reaffirmed by some medic, that I had heartburn. But I was worried 'cause it was in the chestal area. Then it turns out my friend, Eggs Benedict, has a pain in his chestal area, in the same exact spot. I figured if I could get Eggs to go to the doctor, I could figure out what was wrong with me, at no charge, so I con Eggs.

He goes.

Turns out he's got heartburn.

Cost him twenty five dollars, and I feel great, 'cause I figured I beat the medic out of twenty five big ones, y'know. Called up Eggs two days later - he died.

I check into a hospital immediately, have a battery of test run and x-rays. Turns out I got heartburn. Cost me a hundred and ten dollars. Now I'm furious.

I run to Eggs' mother, and I say: "Did he suffer much?" And she said: "No, it was quick. Car hit him and that was it."

Yoinks! Job interview on Monday for something pretty big i'm excited for, could be working for the local radio company in Manchester in admin, with inroads into journalism and editorial.

Bah! Job center cocked up my Universal Credit so the three weeks i've waited out of five for a payment wont count, and have to start again. 2 months with zero income, no wonder people are depending on food banks! Bit of luck, I wont need more than one payment anyway.

Been there, Hawkie - it's a horrible place.

At my lowest ebb, two people, who I'd never met before, brought me supplies from the local food bank. They'd heard about me through the grapevine and just turned up - right when I needed it the most. That was the day I lost my faith in the system and rediscovered my faith in individuals.

Hopefully, though, you get the job. Fingers crossed for ye, fella.

If it's any help at all, I've been on an 8-month trawl through Dr David Burns's podcasts on CBT and effective communication. He says that making your interview all about the interviewer rather than yourself is the key.  He tried it himself as a young man (researching in advance and becoming really, really interested about the interviewer and his job) and apparently his interview stretched to about three times as long as was necessary. He immediately got the job, over far more qualified candidates.
Haven't done an interview for years but I wish I'd known that.  Well, to be fair I did do one last year, but it was for a job I'd had 14 years experience of, and the interviewer is now a regular drinking buddy.

Good Luck Hawks. Had a few interviews a couple of years back and did some light reading on what those companies were about. They were amazed at basic facts I had at my fingertips and admitted some truly basic stuff they didn't know themselves. Little effort goes a long long way. Message ends!

Hope the interviews were fruitful Hawks.

Yoinks! I had a nice spicy naked burrito* for lunch at work. Tasty meat (chicken or possibly pork) with rice, veg (peppers), beans, guacamole**, sour cream and jalapeño chillies in a spicy salsa sauce. Lovely.

Bah! My guts rebelled later. It could have been the tea and the chocolate thing I had at Costa on the way home (wouldn't be the first time I got a belly pain after going to such places but that's usually coffee related) but in this case I think it was the spice. I usually cope okay but jalapeños*** AND a spicy sauce might have been overdoing it. 🤪

I don't feel too bad now, but... yuck.

Hungry again now so I'm having a bit of dinner. Probably should give my belly a rest but...

*'Naked' cos it didn't come wrapped in that flat pancake type stuff**. It came with plenty of Mexican style rice, so I figured that would do on the carbs front,

** I know all the correct Spanish words as you can see.

*** Fascinated how my spellchecker adds the tilde symbol over the 'n' in 'jalapeno'. Heh. Doesn't do it if I use quotes.

Drokkin' A, Hawkie! Per ardua, ad astra!

(In the original non-airforce-motto sense).

On a similar yoincks/bah vibe, just had a bizarre job meeting where a (very respctable) company appeared to be throwing work at me with an almost pleading tone. So much so that I quoted them a stupidly high hourly rate and then left the building thinking I've stuffed it up completely by looking like a stunned (and greedy) fish after the first 20 minutes...

Ah well, we'll see.

Jez getting a job is such a lottery. Getting 2nd out of 40 gives you should a good start going forward. Get feedback, listen to the feedback. Not let it dominate but don't let the feedback but just 'They had more experience' asked them how they expressed it, what they showed and learn. You must have an excellent platform to build from but they way to do that is always listen to the folks as they should give you the time if you have done well.

Good stuff, Hawkster, and Tordels too.  Keeping my tentacles crossed for you both.

More a 'bah; yoincks!' for me too - I get a hospital bill for my recent accident for €412; of which my health insurance would only cover a fraction, with a holiday coming up in two weeks.  I withdraw a sizeable amount from my meagre emergency fund.

On calling the hospital, it turns out that €312 of that would only apply if I'd made a successful claim against another driver. There was no other driver involved so it's only the hundred. I have absolutely no clue as to how any of this makes sense, but, well, yoincks,  I suppose.

I love this little country, but the healthcare is far too complicated.
I pay private health insurance, have done or the last twenty years, wouldn't be without it. Half is paid by work.

So the last two days I have had two of the kids at the Doc, €50 a pop. I can claim 20 from insurance, and then claim the balance from tax at the end of the year, ending at the visit costing somewhere around 25 euro.
Flip side is both appointments were made at 8.30, the were 'squeezed in' at nine by a great doc.

Hospitals are the same, there is a fee for A&E, and they are just mental, but in my experience once you get past the chaos that is the admission, the system, it works well. The whole private consultants working in public hospitals needs to be changed and GP referral's given more weight, eg, if I present to the hospital with a letter from the GP saying I need an Xray for a suspected sprained ankle, why do I need to be triaged, wait for a doctor, wait for the radiologist etc etc etc. AGGHG!
Anyway rant over! Back to comics.

In fairness there are caps for fees for most services in the public system - no-one's going be hit with anything like the full cost for major treatments or hospital stays (max about €1000 a year, I think). But at the GP/minor injury outpatient/prescription level the numbers can get annoyingly- if not bankrupty- large.

Hawks tiresome Y!FCBB Work Edition Vol.5:

Yoinck! OK so though I said I wanted to avoid hospitality but I really need money, and a former employer of mine from probably the one good outlet i've worked for has approached me to help manage a new store they're opening in Victoria. Good money for what it is, it's a stop gap, plus discounted travel as I work in the station so gonna be milking that plus!

Yoinck! Pt. 2! After a surprisingly short period wait period, my application for a Voluntary Placement at BBC Media City (Radio Manchester and 5Live) for 10 days has been approved, interview for opportunity is next week, and if nothing else will get me to network a bit. Fingers crossed for this....

Bah!: Waiting. So much waiting. It's the absolute worst part of undertaking anything of this nature because you seemingly can't just start ASAP. Bah! Double Bah!
Title: Re: yoincks! followed closely by bah!
Post by: TordelBack on 16 November, 2019, 11:52:22 AM
Yoincks! My work situation is currently the best it's been for many years, a main interesting four-month contract with a very professional client that is paying me about twice the rate I was able to get just 3 years ago, and a few little side projects that I can keep ticking over. I keep waiting for the catch, and uh-oh here it is...

Bah! A petrol-guzzling commute is causing me angst. 5hrs a day by multiples of public transport or just 2hrs by car. Guess how my environmental principles fared against tge prospect of leaving the house at 5am and returning at 730pm. It doesn't help that a similar equation has played out in almost every project I've had this year.
Title: Re: yoincks! followed closely by bah!
Post by: Tiplodocus on 16 November, 2019, 11:58:56 AM
When faced with similar, I opted for public transport and then used the time to do all of the "me stuff" ( reading, writing, playing games which with technology now could expand to watching tv) so that when I finally got home, I could spend what time I had on family time. (But I suppose driving is a good time to catch up on podcasts and audio books etc.)

Of course this went by the way side and after a few years my public transport time was used for sleeping and apologising profusely to the person I had dribbled on.
Title: Re: yoincks! followed closely by bah!
Post by: TordelBack on 16 November, 2019, 12:26:52 PM
I've justified/endured long PT commutes on that very basis, but the maths on this on just doesn't seem to work: 9.5 hrs at work plus 5 hours travel plus entirely notional 8 hours sleep leaves 1.5 hours a day for *everything* else. And the commute is a mix of walk-bus-walk-coach-walk out and walk-bus-tram-walk back so even the possibility of getting work done is limited. I can't see myself surviving 4 months of that, even with mobile gaming and Netflix.

I think I'll just have to mix it up during the week, maybe drive Tuesdays and Thursdays and grin and bear it the rest.

Title: Re: yoincks! followed closely by bah!
Post by: TordelBack on 16 November, 2019, 02:28:14 PM
Same amount of gas though, innit? I don't mind the actual driving, podcasts and Ed Reardon's Week keep me more than entertained, I'm just trying not to drive if at all possible for environmental reasons, but find myself seduced by the convenience.

I have however hit on a partial solution - on days I drive I can head 20 minutes up to my elderly aunt's house and spend the evening there, doing chores/shopping/nattering, which means my mother won't have to do a considerably longer drive as often. I've kipped on her floor a  bit recently while she was unwell, so that's an option. It's hardly ideal for family life but it salves my conscience on two grounds.

Alas, being a manager physically on site is what I charge 'em for!  My clients could actually do my job themselves, but their office is even further away than I am and they don't want the hassle that they are paying me (handsomely by my standards) to absorb. That's the very emphatic Yoincks! part of this post after all!

The issue is the need to go all the way into the city centre from the uttermost new suburbs wher'er I dwell and all the way back out again to even newer suburbs what we are building.  My ingenious better half has been concocting clever ways to get to site without going corewards by misusing airport shuttles and the like, but they all seem to fall down because I need to be on site before 0730 and there's a 15+ minute walk from the nearest bus-stop (which is the end of the line) and there just aren't faster services that get me out there for that time.

There's a whopping irony in all this as 27 years ago my Final Year Dissertation was an analysis of the need for concentric (rather than just radial) PT services in the Dublin hinterland, and I turned down an offer of funding to develop it as a complete study because I thought it was so bloody boring and I wanted to do *this* instead...

Hopefully the follow-on contract I'm hoping to get in the Spring is one I can do from home, and thus re-establish my eremitic low-carbon ways (so many young people out there that I'm supposed to exchange pleasantries with, shudder).

By the standards of my profession the actual car-journey is laughably short, but I'm trying to do better. So for now it looks like it'll be as many trade-offs as I can manage.

Drive, and offset the environmental impact by planting trees, or encouraging others too. Take a look at the your house to see where you can make it more efficient, in terms of lighting, heating, waste disposal etc.

Solid suggestions here, thanks Hivemind - even PaddyKafka! A combo of many of these ideas should get me through - the crappy bike left at one end especially would mean the feasibility of getting a later 0645 coach, which would mean I could wait until the first tram runs at 0545, cutting a whole 45 mins off my journey and immensely improving the comfort... there's even a cycle path at the far end! Plus having a bike at work would mean I could do supply runs etc during the day. Doable, I think.

I know I'm lost somewhere in the virtue-signalling mire here, but I am genuinely trying so hard to reduce my family's footprint in every other area that it feels like a real stumbling block to be seduced back into a car by lack of reasonable PT solutions.  There has to be some compensation for living in a high-density suburban wasteland over a home with some green around, and I believe access to viable public transport is the biggie.

I used to work in public/private transport and it's a complex web. You never know whether a taxi or mini-bus is going your way, empty or under-filled, on a regular run, that you can take advantage of. If you can find more people going the same way (not necessarily to the same place), then you have the potential to devise your own private transport route. It's not guaranteed, of course, but there's a decent chance. It's worth asking around local taxi/coach firms - because you never know...

Yoinck: managed to get through christmas day with my partner's brexit voting family with no mention of politics

Bah: her Dad's 60th was today. At the point the shouting of "We won; get over it" could be heard from the kitchen I figured it might be a good time to make an excuse about the dog and leave.  I'm now at home with the dog, my partner insisted on staying because "she felt sorry for him because she was the only blood relative who'd turned up for his 60th". Really wanted to say "I wonder why that could be" but thought better of it for once in my life. Ugh the worst thing is how depressingly predictable it all was, a slow dive into a dumpster fire.

Well I've not posted this before noe as I've not been sure where to put it, and world events are increasingly taking over...

We embarked on a big DIY job in January; completely replastered hall/stairs/landing, started replacing all architrave and skirting, floors etc - quite a bit of upheaval involved. Then our porch roof perished with all the January rains, resulting in our having everything from the hall/landing/porch piled high in our front room.

Into the middle of this chaos came the news that my partner is pregnant (our first). My head was spinning. Lots to plan for, lots to do, etc. I'm going to be a dad! One week after the positive pregnancy test, work informed me I was going to be made redundant.

I've now finished working my notice period and the job scene's gone pretty quiet. Who's thinking about taking on new staff at a time like this?! Can't even get an interview. And in the middle of this corona virus explosion, we find out we're not 12 weeks pregnant as we thought but 20 - so we've missed most of the important pre-birth tests and checks. Fun.

I would just like 2020 to just... Just please give me a chance to catch my breath. I'd like to finish the DIY or get a job or something before the next fire/flood/pandemic hits...

Seem's a very relevant time to bring back this thread this week...

Monday Yoink!

Was successfully accepted into and offered a position on the September 2020 trainee scheme for journalistic post graduates at the BBC in media city, a positions i've been working towards for 3 years now and was extremely excited to start....

Wednesday Bah!

Only for funding to be pulled for the position days later due to concerns over job security post Covid, and there's no guarantee i'll even be able to simply take up the job next September instead, meaning i'll likely have to reapply for the job and go through the long application process ALL OVER AGAIN...

Thursday Yoinks!

Was offered a similar position at the MEN after a few months waiting on feedback from my interview back in February...

Todays Bah!

....Aaaaand that position has been pulled too.

Fuck it, who needs a career eh? I'm having a drink.

So, having gone from the initial delight of avoiding the prospect of being homeless by accepting the offer of a Dublin City Council flat, I now find myself in the situation of wondering what fresh Hell I have found myself in.

There is nothing wrong with the flat itself, per se. It is bright, big and airy and, by any yardstick, a distinct improvement upon the mice-infested kip that I was previously in. No, the unavoidably large elephant in the room is the couple of residents in the block who are making life unpleasant for everyone else there.

For starters, there is the self-confessed junkie 'ould one in the flat beside me, who swears that she is going to be moving out and getting treatment for her addiction. It is not enough that she perpetually leaves the front door entrance to the block perpetually unlocked (because she has lost her keys, and has to shout out to one of the tenants above for admittance when someone happens to, quite correctly, close and lock the block door behind them). But on account of her stupidity, basically anyone and their mother feel free to come into the block and do as they wilt. As I witnessed for myself yesterday at 12.30pm in the daytime, as I encountered two junkies smoking from a craic pipe on the stairs directly fucking below me.

As if that wasn't bad enough, some other asshole in the block has basically turned their flat - assuming, that is, that they are even legitimate residents in the block, to begin with - into a drinking den, to which the absolute scumbag dregs of society are allowed access at various hours of the day and night. (And, as with the junkie, it is that same asshole that they shout up to - most strenuously, I might add - from the street for admittance.) Aside from the noise and the general anti-social behavior of these mostly late teen and early-twenties males, one of the more disgusting aspects that can be ascribed to them, is that after every time they visit, they invariably end up literally pissing on the stairs of the block. (This has happened three times so far in the less than two weeks in which I have been a resident here. And on Friday just gone it happened right on the stairs at the entrance door to my own flat!)

Additionally, because of the junkie woman's basic lack of decency and attention to her home, her jacks is in such a bad state of repair, that is is literally leaking and flooding through the floor below her. (As I witnessed a Dublin City Council maintenance worker reprimand her about yesterday). This has caused an overflow, which has resulted in the ceiling above the main entrance to the back yard below cracking at the seams. And the poor schmuck in the flat below her has water - and Christ knows what else! - flowing down the walls of his flat as well. (A fact that I overheard him last night telling her in no uncertain terms.)

It says it all that, upon seeing last week, a rat the size of your average cat prowling about the back yard of the block, my biggest concern is with the two-legged vermin within.

Aw man, sorry, Paddy.  Just when things were on the up.  Sadly I think you're not far off some kind of drop-in centre or methadone clinic in that area.  Although it's a sad state to see so many junkies in Dublin and the system has obviously let them down, they can also be incredibly selfish and intrusive.
Title: Re: yoincks! followed closely by bah!
Post by: paddykafka on 09 August, 2023, 08:09:37 PM
Thanks, lads.

I've been trying the last few days to stay upbeat and keep things in perspective. Like, obviously a roof over my head is better than the alternative of being on the street, or in some dingy hostel surrounded by the kind of cretins who are despoiling and ruining this block. At least I have the option of closing my door on them and attempting to lock them out of my mind for a while.

But in addition to the issues which I already mentioned, the gutter-trash are living down to their name and frequently just dumping their garbage in the hallway. And because they are also leaving the door to the back yard open most of the time, they may as well be putting on a buffet for the rats and other vermin in the area.

Even worse than that, I spoke to one of the residents yesterday, and she told me that she had just removed two bags of shite that had been literally dumped in the back yard! I asked her if she had considered reporting all this various awful behavior to the Dublin City Council authorities, but she is too afraid to do so. She reckons that there is a criminal element involved among the scumbags, and is too afraid of retaliation and vindictive repercussions.

(She claimed that she was once attacked by one of them wielding a Samurai sword. Mind you, she's also as mad as a bag of cats - albeit in a highly strung, eccentric and relatively harmless way - so go figure.)

On top of that, some lowlife - whether one of the regular visitors, or just some randomer taking advantage of the front door also being left frequently open -is regularly opening up the residents post boxes inside the door.

And aside from all this, my left bloody foot has been giving me hell since last weekend, to the point that I can now do a vivid - and bloody painful! - impression of Jack Nicholson limping around towards the end of The Shining. But I haven't been able to go to the doctor, as I'm also trying to get the council to sort out problems with the gas & water heating, and have been keeping my schedule free as I await their call. As a consequence, I have not had a shower since I moved into this cesspit. So I've been reduced to taking bird-baths at the sink instead.

But at least the off-license in the area stocks some decent wine, which helps to numb my overall experience, here in Dublin's mini equivalent of Peach Trees. (Minus, obviously, the Slow-Mo and high powered super guns.)

Where's Judge Murphy when you need him, eh?

Yesterday I decided to bring the old Lawmaster down to my parents' house for a visit.  Coincidentally, I get a text saying that the old girls' school (now a very nice venue and coffee shop) is hosting a mini-sci fi convention, featuring Mike Carroll, among others.  Which is seriously impressive for a very small and unremarkable town in the middle of Ireland.

When I got there, however, I was a bit too late and all I saw were some Ghostbusters packing their wares up.  Bah indeed - I wanted to ask Mike if he really had called Chief Judge Walsh after me (you never know- he made my old neighbour and ex-forum member Johnnystress and his brother into Dredd bad guys).

Oddly, the only time I met Mike before was also in my hometown (Kells, if you're interested - a famous old book was found here and that's about all we're known for).  He was giving a talk about Dredd for a literary festival and he was excellent, getting the audience booing for the likes of Orlok who they'd never heard of.  He was lovely to chat to afterwards too.  Ah well - maybe he'll turn up here again in another 6 years.

All the same, that's a bummer about you not getting to meet Mike Carroll again. But you never know. Maybe the convention will become an annual event - if it isn't already - and you'll have the opportunity to see him again next year?

Boo, the paperwork! Boo, the difficult ones who are all like "but, like, what's even the point of the thing you've poured your heart and soul into, and that humanity in general has a great respect for?" It's just a 50% co-share but it's a start, and I'm really happy with my cozy little digs and its locale.

Bah!

Solicitors slapped me with a litany of extra charges. I was aware this was a probability but accumulatively they more than double the initial quote, bringing it just shy of £3000.
What's more, a number of these extra charges seem either frivolous or inclusive of services agreed upon in the initial quote.
Fair to say this multi-year saga in my life isn't quite over yet as I'm now seeking financial counsel. Yet another headache to endure.
