I am in the process of getting the unofficial City of Dredd resource book back in to publication. Working with Ivan Noel, who was involved in the original project throughout publication.

We've obtained John Caliber's blessing to proceed with this and John's name will remain on the book in some form.

Ivan and I worked on Play Dredd with John and I used this book and it's predecessors to help keep my games 'real'. I was sad to see it go out of publication but fully understood why John took that step.

This is not for profit and we'll try to keep the cost as low as possible.

It'll be months before anything solid can be shared - you can read my full announcement about this on my blog, though the project will not be part of the Judge-Tutor Semple 'brand'

Good luck with it. The original is a real gem of a read. It would be nice if rebellion allowed you to use some illustrations as a good will gesture to a project which is clearly very much fan driven and inherently uncommercial in terms of time and effort of the contributors.
If I'd known it was harmless I would have killed it myself.

If they make one exception they would get a ton of similar requests.

All illustrations have to be original for the publication and can't have any Rebellion IP. So no Judges, Statue of Justice, etc. Also no Dredd Logo which is a big shame.

But that's the way It has to be. We'd rather publish without those things than not publish at all.

Bat, I'm on a serious hunt for a physical copy of any of City of Dredd. Any suggestions? Z

Surely granting permission is no different to granting Zarjaz and Judge Minty permission?

Hi BPP, Over at Zarjaz & Dogbreath we don't use any material created for 2000 AD (apart from odd panels used in the Case files series over at DB which are all credited as copyright Rebellion).

Even on the promo material we create we take pains to only use artwork that is created 'for' us.

We do not have any permission to use 2000 AD artwork, and we always make sure that the command centre gets a copy of all issues to give TMO the opportunity to let us know if he is unhappy with how we portray his toys.

Tharg is a mighty and benevolent dictator- it pays not to piss him off.

Steve Green

Minty is slightly different, we're not even at the level of covering costs, it's all self-funded.

There were some miniature figures sold for charity, but that was cleared through Rebellion and Mongoose as it was their territory.

It's about as not-for-profit as it gets. Planet Replicas has grown out of it, but that's a separate thing, and I don't have any financial involvement in it.

The only 2000AD artwork we used was the strip in the credits, and I'm pretty sure we cleared that first, and we are very diligent in crediting creators and copyright owners.

BPP

I can't see city of dredd as being any different to either of those answers

1) it's clearly not for profit on a viable scale as the research time and effort couldn't be remunerated.
2) whether you are using old 2000ad art or new art doesn't matter in general as the IP protection extends to the characters, concepts and images. Zarjaz needs rebellions blessing to use any Dredd / 2000ad IP and produces a book for sale. Just as City of Dredd was. So the permissions are granted (even if just by dint of non-enforcement)

It's not really an argument. Of course I heartily approve of rebellion protecting its IP and ensuring its creators get their cut. But let's not kid ourselves.."City of Dredd" (which of course needs approval to be called that) is so incredibly niche that it's only going to appeal to the very few fans who follow Dredd religiously. I can't see an agreement that they can use one spot illustration every 50 pages or so making any impact on any sales but it would make the book that bit more interesting to the fans. Remember it was said that rebellion weren't interested in the project as it was inherently uncommercial...

Anyway it's just a thought and a conversation. Volume 1 was great and good luck to those undertaking the unrewarding task of updating it.

I  am firmly with Bolt-01 and Steve. And yes BPP I know you aren't arguing just  discussing.

But we won't be using any images or fonts from Judge Dredd, 2000AD or Rebellon unless we get permission, which we don't expect to get.

Unlike Zarjaz & Dogbreath we don't even intend to use images of Dredd created for us. Our Cityscapes probably won't feature blocks with names on or identifiable buildings or features such as Statue of Justice etc.

Like Bolt-01 a copy of City of Dredd will be given to TMO.

Anything we think needs checking will be checked.

I won't have anything about my Judge-Tutor Semple in or on the book. Though my blog will publicise it...

My blog has to remain fully non profit due to the name I use and my nifty Michael Carroll created Semple Badge.

On my blog I do use copyrighted material. But always only for review purposes or to publicise things Rebellion are up to. Mostlywith direct permission from Molch-r.

My approach is similar with images from DC, Image, Hibernian, Judge Minty, Paragon things by Mr Megabus, etc.

I even asked Bolt-01 for permission to put my interviews with John Wagner & Carlos Ezquerra up because those were commissioned for Dogbreath. As a side issue, though related, I sent Carlos a copy of the interview before submitting it to ensure no misunderstandings were caused due to language differences.

it is all about respect to creators and IP owners. After all I only write about things I enjoy so I already respect those I write about.

And reward... seriously every nice comment I get about my blog really does make it worthwhile. Montynero tweeted my name among people he credited for helping Death Sentence be a success. That was really, really amazing. Receiving unsolicited Pdfs from creators is also a great thing that happens, yes I am free publicity so they are gaining something but the trust I am shown by publishers and creators from Big to Small is really appreciated.

So... we don't expect much from Rebellion. We just don't want to offend them.

Ivan has released 16 Maps from the archive.

There is an article on my Blog about it but all you have to do is pop over to the City of Dredd Citizen's Group to see them all. Simple.

I apologise if this has been discussed elsewhere...

Is a revised edition of C.O.D. still on the cards?

ZenArcade
