Off Topic / Xmas Booty 2020
25 December, 2020, 05:13:49 PM
I thought I'd kick off the Xmas Booty thread for this year. Post here with pics and descriptions of your best Xmas Booty!

Anyway, you know how I've always said I really wanted an AT-AT for Xmas as a kid, but they were totally outside of the budget of my family?

Well, my partner bought me an AT-AT for Xmas.

I have to admit to getting a little emotional. 🥲

Other Booty was the usual booze, book tokens, and a pair of great socks featuring Emperor Palpatine. When you wear them it looks like he's sitting on his throne! 😆

How did you get on folks? Was Santa good to you too?

General / Festive Thrill-Tree: Charity Raffle!
09 December, 2020, 03:40:07 PM
Hi all

After the success of the last raffle for Magic Breakfast, many folk approached me asking if I would run another one, but with lots of donated prizes.

So here it is - freshly launched today, with a ton of stuff up for grabs!

https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ukcomicfansxmasnewyearraffle

Here's the blurb:

As you are probably aware, more than one in four children in the UK currently go hungry.  With little aid from the UK government, and more economic turmoil on the horizon, it turns once again to us to do what we can.

That is why I have chosen Magic Breakfast again for my fundraising raffle, which aims to provide the most vulnerable children their first meal of the day, and for many their only meal of the day.

Some of you will have participated in my model raffles before, where we raised a huge amount for Save the Children and Magic Breakfast. I am asking you once again to please dig deep for the kids of the U.K.

If you are a fan of independent UK comics, or Judge Dredd and 2000AD, you would likely love to win any of the following prizes, donated very generously by fans, artists, and comic editors.

The raffle will be drawn at the end of January.

Let's see what the prizes are:

TOP PRIZES

The '77 variant issues: The first three variant issues of new independent UK sci-fi comic The '77, which you may have already seen on the shelves of Forbidden Planet!

Original artwork from Andy Sawyer: Returning to illustration after a 25 year hiatus, Andy is currently illustrating The Cell for The '77, and recently created album art for Vertical Noise and The Aggros (Cro Mags).  He has offered a prize of an A4sketch of a subject of your choice!

Judge Minty – rare lead miniature: This is a much sought-after miniature amongst 2000AD fans, a very limited edition released in conjunction with the famous Judge Minty fan film!

Dave the Orangutan – one-off Judge Dredd Model: This is the last of Scowlin Munkeh's 2000AD models.  It is a one-of-a-kind one-off piece, based on the famous mayor of Mega-City One, Dave the Orangutan.  However, he comes with accessories, so he can also be turned into The Librarian from the famous Terry Pratchett Discworld novels!

Judge Dredd Block War Card Game: From 'Game and a Curry' games, this is a classic two-player card game where you go head-to-head as Mega-City One housing blocks, with the Judges in the middle trying to stop both of you!

Runner-Up Prizes:

Judge Dredd Annual 1987

2000AD Annual 1987

Judge Dredd Funko Pop – boxed

2000AD/SFX Playing Cards

Judge Dredd Coffee Mug

PLEASE READ THE RAFFLE RULES CAREFULLY

You MUST leave your name visible to be included in the raffle.  It is best to be registered and logged in to JustGiving to be able to do this.

Here's the deal with the raffle:

One ticket = £4

Three tickets = £10

Seven tickets = £20

You can enter as many times as you like. However, you can ONLY WIN ONE PRIZE.

I will be drawing for the runner-up prizes first. If you win, and your name is drawn a second time, I will redraw for any further prizes.

If you want to be included in the raffle you MUST provide your name and one way by which I can contact you if you win.

If you are entering the raffle DO NOT tick the gift aid box - it isn't applicable for raffle tickets.

PLEASE donate if you are not entering the raffle. Any amount will be gratefully received.

I will be keeping the page open until 31/01/21, and doing the draw shortly after that. I will then contact the lucky winners and arrange for the items to be parcelled and posted to you.

Thank you everyone! Please give generously – keeping the kids of the UK fed isn't just for Xmas!

Just flagging this up in case you didn't know.

The live stage show of Jeff Wayne's musical version of The War of the Worlds is being streamed free (although they ask for a donation to charity) on YouTube until 7pm tomorrow!

It has an all star cast, superb effects and visuals, plus the fab music! I've seen this twice live, and loved it. However, I've just watched the intro and can see already they've since given it some serious updates!

Enjoy!!

By now you will no doubt have seen the awful response from the UK government regarding feeding millions of our vulnerable children over Xmas.
I do not feel we can stand by and watch this disaster unfold in front of us. We have no choice now but to support charities that will do this work for us.

That is why I have chosen Magic Breakfast for my fundraising raffle, which aims to provide the most vulnerable children their first meal of the day, and for many their only meal of the day.

Some of you will have participated in my model raffles before, where we raised a huge amount for Save the Children. I am asking you once again to please dig deep for the kids of the U.K.
The prizes are absolute one-offs. If you are a Judge Dredd fan and you win one of these you will be safe in the knowledge that no-one else has a piece like this.

The first prize is everyone's favourite, Sensitive Klegg, inspired by the famous 2000AD cover drawn by Chris Weston. Many folk have asked if I will ever raffle him, and I said no. However, the situation now demands that you get your chance to win this peaceful giant alien lizard!

The second prize is the only Judge Dredd Portable Rad-Sleet Simulator (or Snowglobe) known to exist. My creation was inspired by Judge Dredd and his squad in their bid to reach Dan Tanna Junction to stop the Sov invasion, wading through inclement weather after Weather Control was destroyed.

PLEASE READ THE RAFFLE RULES CAREFULLY

Here's the deal with the raffle:
One ticket = £4
Three tickets = £10
Seven tickets = £20

You can enter as many times as you like. However, you can ONLY WIN ONE PRIZE.

I will be drawing for 2nd prize first. If you win , and your name is drawn a second time, I will redraw for 1st prize.
If you want to be included in the raffle you MUST provide your name and one way by which I can contact you if you win.

PLEASE donate if you are not entering the raffle. Any amount will be gratefully received.

I will be keeping the page open until 22/11/20, and doing the draw shortly after that. I will then contact the lucky winners and arrange for the items to be parcelled you and posted.

Thank you everyone! Please give generously - we need to feed our kids this Xmas.

Games / Black Myth: Wu Kong
20 August, 2020, 06:56:45 PM
It looks like Monkey finally gets a game deserved of the "Journey to the West" odyssey!

It dropped out of nowhere today. There's a 13 minute gameplay trailer with an amazing montage of other gameplay scenes towards the end:

Off Topic / Debating online? You’d better read this.
04 August, 2020, 05:02:17 PM
This is a really useful document. I encourage anyone prepared to get into a debate on social media to carefully read it.

Your current techniques are likely causing the other person to double down on their position, rather than change their mind. I've seen this happen really Brexit, climate change, Labour vs Tories, wearing facemasks, and so on.

It's a common misconception that just presenting the facts will do the trick. If that person has an ideological view that contradicts the facts, they will likely ignore the facts.

This document discusses how to structure an argument to hopefully avoid this.  If it still doesn't work it at least gives any other reader of said discussion an 'inoculation' against the myth or conspiracy theory - both giving the facts, the myths, and explaining the difference.

Have a read. It is a fantastic take on the psychology of debate:

This article has celebrities sharing their various geekery, and Karl shares some words about Dredd and a nice meeting with Carrie Fisher.

Off Topic / Growing for the Apocalypse
19 March, 2020, 02:20:22 PM
A bit of a tongue in cheek title, but you get the idea.  Food security is looking a little dodgy at the mo, and it wouldn't help to have a backup.

Any gardeners out there who are thinking of growing veg in the back garden, on the patio, from window boxes etc etc?

I don't have particularly green fingers myself, but my partner is pretty on top of this kind of stuff, and I can detail our layout and supplies for home grown fruit, veg and herbs if anyone is interested.  Also keen to hear any top tips I can pass on to my partner!

If you know any retro collectors, please point them in this direction:

Suggestions / ‘Vote Dave’ tshirt please!
31 August, 2019, 03:01:19 PM
As per the mention in the Trump/Cal thread:

Is there any chance of a 'Vote Dave' mock-up political poster on a 2000AD tee please?

...  anyway, Dave was the second best Mayor MC1 ever had!

Not to  mention criminally neglected in the recent slew of election themed t-shirts put out by Rebellion.

Consider this the start of a petition: we demand a "Vote Dave" t-shirt!

I'm with you Comrade Tjm86! ✊

General / Comixology IDW Judge Dredd sale!
07 May, 2019, 01:39:16 AM
I couldn't see if this had been posted anywhere:

https://m.comixology.co.uk/Judge-Dredd-Sale

I'm not sure of the quality of the IDW Dredd stuff, except the Mars Attacks one, which is currently an absolute bargain!

Does anyone have any other IDW Dredd recommendations?

Events / Lawless Model Raffle
11 March, 2019, 07:48:09 PM
I am pleased to announce I will be creating a Lawless exclusive clay model, and raffling it at the event. All proceeds will be in aid of Save the Children. More on the model as it is created, although it will fit with the theme of the event - watch this space!

In the meantime, I am also raffling three existing models in the run up to the event, via the JustGiving page below (also for Save the Children). The draw will take place at Lawless, alongside the draw for the exclusive model.

It's £2 per raffle ticket. I'm hoping to reach £300 ahead of Lawless.

Please give generously, and good luck in the raffle!

Film & TV / Kingdom - Netflix
12 February, 2019, 06:08:02 PM
Blimey - Kingdom on Netflix! A Korean period drama set in feudal times, like Water Margin, but with SHITLOADS OF ZOMBIES!!!!

It's bloody brilliant! With the emphasis on 'bloody'.

Film & TV / Russian Doll - Netflix
04 February, 2019, 01:20:48 PM
Anyone watched this?  I think it has been added recently.

I chained it on the weekend - lots of nice half hour episodes.

Basically, it's a Groundhog Day-style story of people stuck in a 24 hour time loop, where at the end of each 24 hour period the protagonist dies in a more unfortunate and horrible way.  The loop is a narrative device, rather than anything blamed on aliens or other-hand waving stuff, as it allows the characters to moved inwards (like a Russian Doll!) as they explore their own damage and how they get past it.

The characters are excellent, particularly the lead role, and the humour is dark as hell, and laugh out loud funny.  On face value it may appear shallow, but it's multi-layered as hell, with any number of ways to interpret the events and key things that recur - the loss of her cat, the importance of the book, mirrors etc.

Very much recommended.

Help! / Introducing a youngster to Philip K Dick
13 October, 2017, 01:05:52 PM
Hi all

My daughter is really into the Electric Dreams series, and has asked if she can read some of my PKD books.

The thing is, I've no idea where to start! I don't want to put her off by shoving something like The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch under her nose. I was thinking maybe a book of short stories, like Beyond Lies the Wub.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

The vehicles Justice Dept use have always confused me. Some are used to collect perps, some are offensive, some are at the scene of riots, some are airborne, some are ground based, some just seem to provide surveillance.

Which are which?!?

Could someone help me get to grips with the vehicles and what they do please?

Is there a write-up somewhere? Or could someone give me a quick summary with links to pictures or pages from the progs?

Events / Prog 2000 signing - Cardiff Forbidden Planet
02 October, 2016, 11:19:33 AM
An excellent crowd for the signing in Cardiff this weekend! The queue was constant. It was great to catch up with some folk too!

Judges Purcell and Pal were on protection duty, plus Cadet.

Here are some pics, with David Roach and Patrick Goddard.
