Fair enough... it was Bish-OP himself in one of the Megazine surveys who said it was widely hated.

It probably was. It was a bit juvenile (especially accompanying one of the earliest examples of John Smith doing horrible body horror in JD) and I suspect the ongoing violence "debate" in the lettercol exacerbated that impression.
