So final day and this one sees a battle harded qualifier come up against a writer whose time as Tharg was controversial but who wrote some gems that are much loved. The exciting thing about a random draw is that you can get outliers remaining and leading to some interesting later contents. Is this where a dark horse lies? I like Pete Hogan as a writer more than Alan McKenzie, but ultimately, I like Summer Magic more than I like any single thing Hogan wrote. One great story gets you far. Alan McKenzie.

Again, McKenzie for that one strip. And he should count himself very lucky in the draw—had he come up against either of the Alans, he'd be out.

McKenzie for me. I'm something of a Bradley apologist, and I also rather liked Brigand Doom. Not sure how much of a hand he had in the strip's creation, but I'm fond of the Soul Gun Warrior and all. (And yeah, lots of Luke Kirby was really good).

Got a lot of time for Hogan, not least that recent Zaucer run, but it's not enough to knock off McKenzie. Mean Arena may be one of 2000AD's blandest thrills, but somehow those three Dragon Tales were even blander. (both rescued, to an extent, by nice art).

Beating Peter Hogan solely on the basis of Luke Kirby, and I mean solely, in every other writing arena Hogan wins but you can't fight a sustained episode of genius, it's Alan McKenzie.

I'll jump on the bandwagon here.  Summer Magic, a tale of a young boy in a 60s English village, was a bold move for a comic about guns and explosions in the future.  But it was perfect. 

So it seems a bit unfair when Hogan wrote Thie Steel Claw in the 1992 Action Special while Alan Mackenzie wrote Kelly's Eye (the only one chosen to continue in the prog, inexplicably), but Alan it is.

Also, as Alan who wrote for 2000ad, so there must have been a lot of pressure on him to produce the goods.
