...well okay thats clearly poppycock... or at least is if we were using the results from the Solhiem Cup as our metric.

Its clear that a number of writers cross the divid and folks like John Wagner and Pat Mills, while still writing for the Prog have written for it through out the Prog history and to call their victories one for one era over another is a bit (lot) ingenuious.

So what have we learnt. Well the view here seems to strongly point to the fact that the folks writing for the Prog now are better than those who have moved on, or only now write very infrequently.

That might not sound much but given those greats are still working for Tharg - we'll of had 10 weeks of Wagner Dredd straight by the end of the current storyline - its really significent to me. The Prog has changed and grown - as we all should - but its clearly in rude health and that is something to celebrate.

Hi folks,

Normal fare at the beginning of any tourney. A thread to set things up, explain the format of the tourney, rules etc, etc - basically just a place I can link to in the votes with explanations about what the heck we are up to.

So I’m hoping (gulp little behind in set-up on this one so hoping I get this done on time, figure if I say I will, I’ll have no choice!) to kick this one off Monday - let's see what the next few day bring and I might have to push things back a week... we'll see.

So hopefully to be included here:

Format of qualifying
What stories will be included in each ‘territory/region’ (this will be explained in format)
What isn’t included
What will happen after qualifying - the final tournament - its all new, all shiny... well kinda
Rules(ish)

Stick with it - this one might get bumpy as I’m NOWHERE near as prepared as normal!

When we got the news that David Evans had passed away I carried on running the tournaments on autopilot - ‘cos that was what I did, but I remember thinking, quite clearly

“This all feels a bit trivial, why on earth am I doing this. I really should stop this.”

On the third morning of feeling like this I stopped and decided to reflect. I’d been thinking a lot about Dave, as many will have done. It struck me however how much Dave loved this place - The Forum that is. I remember chatting to him about it at some Con or other (Thought Bubble no doubt) and he was telling me how much he loved this place. How as he didn’t do Facebook or other social media the Forum was a really important outlet for him. It was a place he could share his passion with like minded Squaxx dek Thargo about 2000ad and comics in general outside of his glorious family.

With that very much in my mind I realised it wasn’t only okay to continue, it felt like it was actually the right thing to do. After all these tourneys were very much my clumsy attempt to keep this ol’ place active and vibrant - and heck for a while there it felt like we were winning.

So with that in mind I cracked on and started to think about what came next and I remembered someone had suggested (and my apologise as I can’t remember who) after the Dredd Ranking Tourney doing something similar with Strontium Dog. It was on my list, but quite a way down as I wasn't sure how to approach it. And let's face it anything not Dredd is never quite as popular so I was concerned it wouldn’t float well.

Well sod it let’s do this. If it's not the most popular tourney, so what. If it's not exactly the best tribute to Dave Evans - so what. It can be our, my, clumsy attempt to mark all the love and joy Dave Evans brought to the board and heck we might even have fun doing it.

I think he would have wanted us to.

Prog / Prog 2240 - In with a bullet!
« on: 13 July, 2021, 09:09:22 PM »
Hold on its Tuesday evening and I've bagged the Prog thread - what's that all about! My Prog landed today and I've had a chance to read it this evening and its an absolute corker. I real humdinger.

Dredd What a way to start a story. A opening scene that is both shocking and funny. Then snap into an unfamilar setting a church, a shake down, a lack of forgiveness. Then bang straight into an apparently unconnected crime scene. Things will be linked I'm sure but at the moment its just three wonderful seperate 2 page package of fresh picked intrigue. So invested in this one already!

Aquila just superb, from a staggeringly designed flashback page rich in guilt, to an act of self appeasement - or at least an attempt, to villains circling this is just wonderfully done.

As is Department K Blackcurrent's dramatic entrance to short lived our heroes enter an alien nest and seem to face danger, but that's as short lived as Blackcurrant's enterance giving us a fantastic ending and so much to learn.

Skip Tracer... well last weeks gave this potential and this week it lands it. Lands it very, very well. This is a superb episode and its a crying shame, almost cruel that its still the least good thing in the Prog BUT this time it is nothing to do with the story here, rather how good - how exceptional the things around it are. In many Prog I'd have happy hailed this top thrill... or there abouts. We've been given a reason to cry. Blake is given the humanity, he needs and that means all the action and the turn on the last page is made to matter. Now come on keep this up and we might have a story as good as the second one.

And after a Prog this good Tharg can still save the best until last. Chimpsky does not does nail the landing, the story it lands the double-double dismount. This is just fantastic. Brutal and charming, chilling and thrilling, funny and sad. Just a perfect strip and I'm sop glad this series, given its chance to blossom outside of Dredd has not only seized it opportunity but grabbed it with both hands, squeezed all the thrillpower out of it and injected same straight into out thrillglands. Just bloody brilliant stuff and I can't wait for this to be back.

So yeah we had some great prog in the last few years but this one is right, RIGHT up there. Just a shame we had to wait until Tuesday to hear all about it!

Team Classic vs. Team Current
Only work for Tharg to be Considered

What a way to end this. For me this vote is a important as the one that started the competition with two titans of the comic. One who left us when he was fully formed to great, great things… mind he wasn’t half good when he was here. The other came to us when he was fully formed and has stayed to take us to worlds beyond or imaginations on a regular basis. Damn this is a stinker to end on...

Remember for this tourney you have 5 votes to distribute as you please between these two artists, whole numbers only. So you can vote 5 - 0; 4 - 1; or 3 - 2; either way depending on how much more you like one artist's work over the other.

If you can’t be doing with that just name your favourite - remember bold tags, or other ways of highlighting always appreciated - and I’ll give them 3 votes and nowt to the other droid.

Three day votes, so this one ends morning of Friday 16th July when this whole damned thing wraps up!

Team Classic vs. Team Current
Only work for Tharg to be Considered

Last week and last two vote that can't affect the outcome, but will determine the nature of the victory for Team Current. Pride to play for and all that for Team Classic.

Few writers will divide comic fans opinion as much as Grant Morrison, pretense or preacher? The same is true in 2000ad and for Tharg (the only thing that concerns us forget ya Animal Man, Doom Patrol or Batman), but at his Zenith there is little denying he plays with the Gods. Alec Worley path under Tharg’s tutorage recent thrill like the reinvention of Hookjaw and Black Beth in the special seem to indicate that as we go forward Alec will be providing many great treats.

Last tie of the last full week and it's a duzzy. Si Spurrier is one of many writers who have learnt their craft at Tharg’s feet and then gone on to make names for themselves in other Universes. Due to that this work for Tharg can be a bit hit and miss, but is never anything less than interesting. Michael Carroll crafted his place in Tharg’s army via Dredd and quickly became a very, very strong writer of the comics lead. More recently however he’s started to spread his wings a little with Dreadnoughts and Proteus Vex showing he is so much more than just a wonderful Dredd writer.

Interesting draw this one. Two writers who might not have set Tharg’s minions hearts on fire but also represent writers who worked hard to have returning works that defy online and visible opinion.

Nikolai Dante is probably the greatest strip 2000ad has ever known [option]. Shakara ain’t bad either… So the degree of the challenge facing Rory McConville isn’t to be underestimated. That said Rory has achieved that hardest of feats of crafting a place for himself as one of the stable of modern Dredd writers and he does give very good Dredd. Add to that new thrills like Department K and his work might well hold up well here?

So Team Classic rolls out one of their big hitters in response their increasingly precarious situation, the question is can Team Current offer an answer to that... welllll....

Alan Hebdon wrote Meltdown Man - so much more, but a classic like Meltdown Man will define this vote for many. Dan Abnett won the Godpleton Cup and … well we know how much he’s done…

Team Classic vs. Team Current
Only work for Tharg to be Considered

The third week starts with a Team Classic desperately needing another win, and quickly, but judging by this tie they still have some popular names to pull out the hat to give them that.

I played a wildcard for Team Current here. I think Kenneth Niemand’s continued output over the last year might well have pushed him into the places by right BUT I’m far more lazy than AlexF and didn’t check. However his work on Dredd, Chimpsky and Megatropolis mark him as possibly the most important find of recent years. And then having given him that place the draw puts him up against the writer of some of the comics most popular strips ever, Rogue Trooper, Harry 20 and so many more… I fear my vote on this one will get me run out of town!

Gordon ‘Sunshine’ Rennie is a real heavy weight of modern 2000ad. He’s produced so many long running series, many of which are considered classics. In many ways his dark edgy tone defines the modern Prog and anchors it to the past at the same time. He’s created and explored his own worlds and played with gleeful bitterness in worlds created in 2000ad’s long history. It's easy therefore to think his volume alone will swamp that of John Tomlinson, but I’m alway surprised by just how much John wrote for the Prog, thinking of him as I do as the Armoured Gideon fella. That rudely dismissed Mercy Heights, Tor Cyan and more. The fact he’s started to craft one offs again for Tharg makes me wonder will he be Team Classic for too much longer?

This is the tie I added to remove an injustice of missing Hilary Robinson from Team Classic. And injustice it is too as she did some fantastic work for Tharg. I’m a big fan of both Zippy Couriers and Medivac 318. Both successfully brought a different tone and much needed variety to the Prog. And this makes her a figure that divides options. David Hine I suspect divides opinion almost equally. He too provides different tones to his work (and remember we’re only thinking about writing here, so ignore David’s art) but for me his recent work on Dark Judges for the Megazine have been real show stoppers and truly excellent.
