Books & Comics / Re: DC to relaunch with 52 #1's

Okay here's my overview of the whole schbang.

The way I see it DC have layout a bold and challenging plan to address a number of key issues (its worth noting not all of these are views I hold myself by the way).

Firstly they are often accused of having an impenetrable mire of continuity that blocks new readers jumping on board. This 'relaunch' is clearly designed to address that.

Second, they are accused of pandering to creators to allow delays to books, they are addressing that. Perversely the internet that so rallys against this lateness has also rallied against a clever attend my management to stop it! Damn if you do...

Third they attempted to diversify their line and characters. Within the constrains of a shared Superhero Universe they've done this.

Finally they've put forward a definitive plan to address the digital market while trying to support their existing main distribution pass.

Regardless of whether people think its a good plan, its an attempt to address, in one go, a lot of the main complaints held against them. Will it lead to success' that's an entirely a different matter and frankly for all the proclamations out there (not here by the way I'm referencing other sites I visit) of doom and failure, disaster and desperation, one none of us will know the answer to until we see the results. Not in September but in the New Year and beyond I'd suggest.

For me they've done a very good job. My pull list has jumped (as of my first pass I'm hoping time and distance will settle my excitement and I might trim a couple more) from 11 to 18. I'll resist the great temptation to list them all and explain why I'm excited by them. With another 4 I have the horrible feeling I'll pick up when I see them on the shelves, sucker I am.

There are things I'm disappointed about after the opening gambit of Azzarello on Wonder Woman I was hoping to see more of that kind of bold matching up of characters and writers, and see a few new exciting writing names brought in. Instead they've fielded artist as writers to make the change it would seem. Fair enough. Over all though I've really enjoyed all the excitment and buzz this week.

The big challenge now for DC is to convert that buzz into results. After all we all know that internet buzz seems to have little impact on actual sales a lot of the time. The fact its a success with me means next to nothing alas, as I'm not the target I suspect. I'm an existing fan who loves the extended soap opera of a shared superhero universe. I'm the type of mug they know they can milk regardless. Its not even the more cynical internet commentators out there. No results will be judged by how they reach the silent majority of comic readers and heaven forbid actual new readers.

One thing that received little comment that I've seen is the fact that come September (or end of August) Warner will be running a big tv ad campaign. Good on um they seem to be backing up their big play. Especially as Barnes and Noble have now pushed comics into more prominant placings in their shelves apparently. One way or another I doubt this is entirely coincidental timing. Hopefully they'll also back up some of the commercially weaker looking titles and teams and give every thing a good solid year at least to find its feet. Hopefully they'll have success getting these books out on a timely fashion (why Liefeld why) and hope a lot of things are achieved here cos this could be really good for the mainstream superhero market... could be.

I don't want to let my relentless negativity derail this thread (and I do hope it works out for them)

HA my relentless naive optimism will keep things on track I hope... or just wear everyone down...

Well that's a great turn around.

This one has a fantastic Dredd, as has been true to form up to now. Unlike the previous specials however this one backs it up with some brilliant other strips.

The Dredd is one of my all time favourites. It falls firmly into the tread of the time of having Dredd as an utter bastard but really worked well and was beautifully realised by Steve Dillon.

Similarly the Milligan Rogue Trooper story is a winner and the Future Shock has always been a favourite of mine too. Heck even the reprint material takes a step up and with a cute one page Slaine by Fabry this is a great read cover to cover.

Alas it doesn't last and while there are some good John Smith tails (pun intended) in the following years the quality continues to be very variable until a bit of a low in '90. I like Armoured Gideon and Bix but these were pretty poor examples and the only thing that held up was a very nice Summer Magic story. Heck the Dredd is even reprint, however good, by this point. I'm a little worried by whats to come if the Dredd in the Annuals is continued!

Yeah an absolutely brilliant read. Only read it a year or so ago in my catch up and loved. Like few other stories I'm already hankering to read it with my completely up to date perspective. It was a bold move for a Dredd epic, much needed and wonderfully executed.

I personally have no problem with the way it ended. The Bongo Wars (was it?) provided a neat way to wrap things up and was efficient and effective if you ask me.

And the fact that that John Constantine is in a fucking superhero team.

Its worth remembering that will be the DCU Constantine. The Vertigo one in Hellblazer will remain unconnected and married etc.

I'm pretty pissed about how they've treated Gail Simone. Took her off Birds of Prey and cancelled Secret Six. They were two of the most entertaining books DC was publishing.

I'll really miss Secret Six, brilliant title. Still will follow Gail Simone's work on whatever and look forward to seeing what she does with Barbara Gordon in particular.

Today's batch are in and it certainly makes for interesting reading.

http://www.bleedingcool.com/2011/06/09/dc-relaunch-wildstorm-westerns-and-war/

First Jonah Hex survives WAYYYYHEEYYYYY.... well kinda. As All Star Western. Set in 19th Century Gotham. Hopefully they won't restrict the stories too much and I do wonder if it will have its own ongoing storyline now rather than the standalones. We'll have to wait and see but at least Jimmy and Justin still have their muckies on Jonah.

Sgt Rock set in the modern day (though by the sound of it linked to Sgt Rock of old) I might go for. Don't know enough about Ivan Brandon to comment but do have Final Crisis Escape in my read pile somewhere, so that might get a leg up. Intrigued by this one.

OMAC I figure will get a kicking by many commentators but I have to be honest while it has many flaws I've kinda got on with Didio's Outsiders and love me the Kirby vibe going on here so might give this a whirl if the budget will stretch.

Stormwatch by Paul Cornell only interests me cos his names on it and I like the Martian Manhunter (I was wondering where he was) so this will be checked out.

Luckily the rest leave me cold. Mind there is a Bisley Deathstroke cover that while it does nothing for me is very Joe Pineapples (it actually reminds one of one panel I remember, though I suspect when I see it it'll look entirely different).

So tomorrow then hey... Superman hey... Morrison hey... intriguing! Can't wait.

Nice interview. I'd love to see more of the fella in the Prog. Loved his work on the Future Shock.

Well I'll be that was a little drab.

After reading some of the annuals for this period I was really looking forward to these, at least the latter half of anyway but the Specials, have to say I'm mighty disappointed.

Each one has a pretty cool Dredd leading it off, from Alan Grant's first script (I believe) with a fun little story of Don Uggie Apelino and co (out of interest does anybody know if there was a different intended vehicle for this? The first half certainly seems to be designed to be read in page long chunks?) to dare I say it John Byrne's strip in '83.

I know the Byrne Dredd isn''t to well regarded but there's bits were I think its excellent and really works. Okay there's bits were he clearly has to make back the time he spent drawing the crowd scenes but over all its nice stuff. Always thing Byrne is better working with a good inker but that aside I liked it.

After the Dredd's though the Specials are by and large a bit of a let down and seem a bit cobbled together. There is the odd nice touch, or at least curio. That Joe Staton, Blackhawk, the Steel Claw reprint, an early Fabry Slaine picture etc etc but overall a bit throw away.

Even the reprints seem to be saving the best stuff for the annuals. Yet the Dredd's continue to be excellent. Shame they lack the consistency of those.

One final note to end on a positive. There is of course one other major highlight the first actual appearance of Nemesis in 'The Sword Sinister' man oh man now that is a treat and a joy to behold.

Well okay so I'm spending 89% of my waking hours talking about, reading about, pestering these boards about, or otherwise planning what I'm going to be reading about after the DC relaunch in September.

Then I read this and woke up, well for a bit at least. The Brilliant Bob Burden discussing his reaction to Marvel stepping all over his trademark 'Mysterymen' with their new title 'The Mystery Men'. Makes for an interesting read.

Oh and the possibility of a collected 'Mysterymen' trade but no news alas about new Flaming Carrot material alas.

There's been a lot of talk about the fact that now Bob Harras is Editor in Chief over at DC (taking very much a back seat to Dan D and Jim L in whatever fancy named roles they have) that the likes of Scott Lobdell, Fabian Nicieza would all be making a come back. Lo and behold there they are.

From a time when I as out of comics so I don't really know him aside from a very dodgy reputation.

Latest bunch are out and its five teen themed title and Rob Liefeld!

http://www.bleedingcool.com/2011/06/08/dc-relaunch-guessing-the-teen-titans-makeup/

I'm relieved to say I have no interest in any of these. After the thumping my future wallet took yesterday I need a break to catch my breathe and regroup before the Morrison wave.

Read one in one of the many articles on this that there's 13 to go. With two days left in the week I wonder if they'll all be out before the solicitations on Monday evening?

Just seen this over at Bleeding Cool.

Hope for Grant and co's sake that Diamond actually manage to stick to this. Well done for getting the agreement though and fingers crossed all goes well.

Decided to put this here as its a bit early to put it in the TV + Film section but according to Bleeding Cool some writer from 'Fringe' (I've not watched it so can't comment) has been asked to adapt 'Born Again' for a DD 'reboot'*

http://www.bleedingcool.com/2011/06/07/fringe-writer-hired-to-reboot-daredevil-movie-franchise-with-adaptation-of-frank-miller-david-mazzucchellis-born-again/

Now its a fantastic story, one of the very best. It just seems a strange choice to start something off. Its has long relationships so embedded in the fabric of the story its difficult to see how DD can be built up to be torn down in one film. Still we'll see.

*Also is it a reboot of a franchise when there's one film and a dodgy spin-off?
