COMMANDO FORCES

On the 20th of March the Royal Mail will be celebrating British comics by releasing a set of stamps that show 10 comic covers with a character from each on the stamp as well.

The set includes The Dandy, The Beano, Eagle, Topper, Tiger, Bunty, Buster, Valliant, Twinkle and 2000 AD with Dredd as the main man.

Now I would put a link up but I'm at work and a bit rushed so find it yourselves  :D

O Lucky Stevie!

You know how Button Man has always wanted to lick Roy Race?

Well here's his chance.

I'm on break now, so I can jabber on about the cover. Love the way Cliff's Dredd is positioned, taking up over 1/4 of the stamp. Vivid colours and such a distinctive image really draw you to that stamp. It's just a pity that they chose a Prog with a picture from a short story that was inside. I think this type of cover/story ran for a dozen or so progs. They could have easily chosen another early cover with a major character on it.
Still, better to have a stamp than no stamp!

P.S. Nice to see a character from Hartlepool make the set, Andy Capp  :D

Surely that's that wife-beating drunk's son, and not The Man himself.

Alski

Good point. Buster WAS the son of Andy Capp, so lay off the poor kid!

O Lucky Stevie!

Possibly because it was an early cover that reproduced well at that scale?

All the others are either first issues or occured well before supersymmetry breaking in their individual runs.

Plus it's a Brian Bolland.

Nice series of stamps.

I guess the only negative is the fact that once again it emphasizes the public perception of UK comics as antiquated and a thing of the past. Clearly there is no point pretending the heyday isn't long since past but you know...

Any reason why they used prog 23?

They had a look through the archives and decided that Prog 23 had the kind of cover they felt worked best with the rest of the set - they also wanted to use a cover from the seventies that sported the old logo.

Can we buy a book of just Dredd stamps?

SuperSurfer

Interesting that they chose such a cover. Guess it looks like retro sci-fi.

I am quite relieved they included 2000AD – at least this is some Dredd exposure in this all important year.

Very glad for Cliff Robinson and Brian Bolland.
