i've just clicked yes, thought it wasn't bad at all. I like the art, that made it for me! wait a while, new series, loads of violence, its got sex, drugs and rock n roll potential !

the3rdman

and my yes vote pushed it over the 50 - 50 mark !

I'm surprisingly torn-the series was awful to begin with but rallied towards the end to finish at "mildy interesting". It was also always readable which is something that cannot be said for TSDM...god knows what's happening there.

Personally I want to see a good Future Sport strip...but I'm unsure whether I want to see this particular one. To me this seems to be in the same category as Valkeryies-with a better artist and some tighter editor it could have been a much better story. Maybe it should be given a second chance to achieve its potential, although I fear that a second series would repeat most of the mistakes of the first.

Plus it would be difficult to see how it could remain just a sports strip-after all the censors will be out for revenge.

It really depends who your audience is supposed to be.

This was very much a cartoon:  aliens with horse and squid heads; nuclear explosions in the middle of a city with no obvious repercusions or visible angst.

If you compare something like 13/Thirteen with this, you'd opt for 14/Fourteen over Third City Blues any day of the week, surely?

However, if it was a choice between utter crapola like Ahab and SCB II, it'd be SCB every time.

It was a good story, but it's not a great story, and I don't see how it ever can be.  I'm not sure if it has legs.

I think SCB is a great idea which Kek-W did his best to make rubbish and failed.

House of Usher

I'm with Noisybast on this one - I voted "yes" but I would just as soon have voted "don't mind".

STRIKE !!!

Well, if offered the choice of repeat engagements for the "new" stories, I'd take SCB (and TSDM for that matter) over the peculiarly unengaging '13', overblown 'Ahab' (what a waste of  the underrated Elson - oi, Wagner, bring back the Lawlords!), slightly embarassing 'Snow Tiger', somewhat generic 'Synnamon', and that one about earth being an alien prison, and I'd even be in two minds about the chock-full-of-promise-but-no-real-payoff-yet "Red Seas", except that I worship at the feet of Ian Edginton and thus can't be dissing too much of his work.

About the only recent offerings I'd prefer to see back are 'Lobster Random', 'Bec and Kawl', 'Asylum' (but they've already had repeat engagements and are thus probably 'established'), and 'Valkyries', which I thought was actually quite a harmlessly entertaining soft-porn romp, but which everyone else hated.

I suppose this shows I like a bit of whimsical filler in my prog, instead of dull-as-polished-shite Future Shocks and unending Sin/Dex, but if asked about slightly "older" strips coming back, I'd love to see more 'Savage', 'Atavar', 'Shakara' or  'Button Man',which are harder edged more engaging pieces.

Oh, and I know 'Vanguard' was shelved, but I'd like to see how that one played out.

Blimey.  This highlights for me what a difficult job it must be to edit 2000AD.

Just comparing things on a very basic scale of shit / gold, I'd come up with the following from the strips you mention:

Gold:
13, TSDM, Snow/Tiger, Synammon (2nd instalment), Red Seas, Shakara, Button Man, Savage

Shit:
Ahab, Lobster Random, Bec & Kawl, Asylum, Atavar, Valkyries, SCB, Vanguard

We're almost diametrically opposed in taste.  Just an observation.

I'd love to see more 'Savage', 'Atavar', 'Shakara' or 'Button Man'

Well then you'll be happy to know that 3 of those four are on the cards, and at least 2 of those are scheduled for this year IIRC.
Cheers

I quite enjoied it!
When it was about to get predicatble (the character on drugs fer instance) it turned the idea neatly on its head. 8 outa 10 of an "old fashoned" romp.
Mind you I loved the original Mean Arena!
