Abaddon's 'Attack the Block meets Lord of the Flies' novel optioned by Multistory Films

Abaddon Books is proud to announce that it has struck a deal with Multistory Films to bring School's Out by Scott Andrews to the big screen.

Attack the Block meets Lord of the Flies in a post-apocalyptic landscape where pupils at a public school grow up fast or they don't grow up at all, School's Out is one of the stand-out titles from Abaddon's successful Afterblight Chronicles series.

The books follows the final days of St Mark's School for Boys; and when your teachers are killing each other, the prefect is experimenting with crucifixion, and the rival gang from across town has decided that ritualistic cannibalism is the way to go, spots and BO don't seem like such big problems any more.

Multistory Films is a new UK-based production company, which has just completed post-production on its debut feature film, low budget horror thriller The Harsh Light of Day. This will be closely followed by art house feature Verity's Summer; written and directed by Short film Palme D'Or nominee Benjamin Crowe.

Jonathan Oliver, editor-in-chief of Abaddon Books, said:
"We're delighted that the quality of Scott's work on School's Out has been recognised – it's a great novel and a cracking read that never lets up. With teenagers facing insurmountable odds in TV series like Misfits and films such as Attack the Block, the time when teens save the world is nigh!"

Jason Kingsley, CEO of Rebellion, said:
"Whereas much post-apocalyptic fiction focuses on the bleak, The Afterblight Chronicles is made for the silver screen: action, big set pieces, strong characters and a killer concept. Abaddon's status as an ideas factory is now well established – our medieval zombie novel Stronghold was optioned earlier this year and this is yet another property that's been snapped up by a film company."

Emma Biggins, producer and MD of Multistory Films, said:
"We are thrilled to begin development on School's Out. The book presents a perfect opportunity to create a high-octane action movie with depth, intelligence and wit. As a new production company we are extremely excited to be collaborating with a company as successful and renowned as Rebellion."

Time travelling Nazi terrorists, flailing steampunk fisticuffs, dapper swashbucklers facing Hammer Horrors from before they were born – Ulysses Quicksilver may have travelled into the past, but has he bitten off more than he can chew?

It's temporal trouble for Quicksilver as he travels back in time to stop the ultimate weapon falling into Hitler's hands just at the crucial moment of his defeat in the Second Great War but must infiltrate the most heavily-defended fortress on the planet to stop this malignant gift from the future from changing the past – and erasing Quicksilver himself from history!

In the world of Pax Britannia, Jonathan Green crafts another storming Boy's Own steampunk adventure where Mary Shelley meets Kim Newman meets The Terminator.

"Jonathan Green gets mileage out of his monsters, with big action set-pieces that read like things we'd like to see in a rip-roaring summer movie." SFX

About the Series
Pax Britannia was Abaddon's fourth shared world, launching with Jonathan Green's Unnatural History in February 2007. A steampunk alternative history set in a late twentieth century in which Queen Victoria – now nearing the end of her sixteenth decade on the throne, and wholly dependent on steam technology for survival – rules over the vastly wealthy, powerful and decadent Empire of Magna Britannia. Airships ply the skies overhead as gentlemen of leisure admire the dinosaurs in the London Zoo, while the Empire has extended to the Moon. Across the pond, the United Socialist States of America, loosely allied with the might of Magna Britannia, is home to dreamers, poets, madmen, and heroes, poised to usher in a new era.

The series has included six books by Jonathan Green, featuring the adventures of Ulysses Lucian Quicksilver, dandy and adventurer and agent of the throne; an omnibus collecting the first three is currently available.

Fight your foes on Facebook as Evil Genius goes anti-social

Dust off your death ray, practice your 'mwahahahahaaa!' and prepare to do battle – Evil Genius now gives you the power to take the fight to your deadliest enemies!

Leading European games developer Rebellion is delighted to launch the battle phase on its first free-to-play anti-social game, Evil Genius: WMD.

Based on the critically acclaimed and much loved PC title Evil Genius, the game now gives madmen-in-training the chance to battle challengers to their malevolent authority!

Thousands of Facebook users have already created their own evil empires, undertaken dastardly missions and recruited friends into their evil syndicates.

Players can now engage their enemies – or even their friends – in mortal combat using everything from laser sharks to exploding hamsters, from wielding a friendly pirate cutlass to bringing out a deadly death ray!

Jason Kingsley, CEO of Rebellion, said:
"This is the next stage in world domination for any would-be Ernst Blofeld or Dr No – taking on your rivals to become the ultimate Evil Genius! The team has done a great job creating an arena for the thousands who've already signed up to Evil Genius: WMD to do battle with increasingly dastardly weapons. We're looking forward to continuing to expand the game with new features and extra content over the coming months."

Chris Kingsley, CTO, said:
"If you keep your friends close and your enemies closer, then this new battle game on Evil Genius: WMD is the perfect way to do both. It brings to fruition our fiendish plans to make Evil Genius on Facebook the very first anti-social social network game."

The update comes just weeks after Rebellion announced it is to create its own division dealing exclusively with games for social media platforms. Evil Genius has been regularly updated and expanded since its beta release last year, with Valentine's Day-themed content.

The Oxford-based developer is best known for its best-selling title Aliens Vs. Predator – which became Sega's fastest selling title of 2010 – as well as The Simpsons Game for Electronic Arts and such critical successes as Sniper Elite and Rogue Trooper.

Twenty-five years to the day since Alan Moore's stunning space opera, The Ballad of Halo Jones, came to an end, American audiences can now enjoy this all-time classic from an indisputable comic book legend – along with extra material exclusive for the US.

A must-have in Moore's oeuvre, Halo Jones represents one of the most human, profound and complex tales the Watchmen and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen writer ever produced.

When it came to a premature end in legendary British comic book 2000 AD on 19th April 1986 – another six chapters were planned but never written – Moore left behind a story that has captivated readers ever since.

With breathtaking artwork from Ian Gibson, The Ballad of Halo Jones is a multi-layered character-driven tale of a young woman stuck in a bleak futuristic New York who sets out to explore the galaxy by any means – whether serving onboard a star cruiser or fighting in warzones that defy physics.

This edition, exclusive to the US, includes pages from Moore's original typewritten scripts for Halo Jones – presented as they appeared at the time – as well as covers and a Gibson pin-up.

Are you chivalrous enough to be a Knight of the New Round Table – and win the chance to be a real knight for the day?

To celebrate the release of the new Knights of Albion series of Arthurian adventure, Abaddon Books is on the hunt for 'knights in shining armour' to sit on a 21st Century King Arthur's Round Table – and they could win the chance to be a real knight for a day.

As part of the hunt, a real knight in shining armour ventured out onto the streets of London – and caused a few stares – as he searched for chivalrous candidates, even managing to do a little wooing of his own!

Whether it's rescuing a princess from a dragon or just opening doors for your beloved, wannabe Sir Galahads can tell us why they should earn a place at Arthur's side by going to http://www.abaddonbooks.com/knight_for_a_day

The most chivalrous are in with a chance to win an exclusive day of training from experts at a specialist jousting facility where they'll undertake the essential training that no aspiring knight would be without – from swordplay to donning armour. The day will be crowned with a thrilling live demonstration of jousting.

The Knights of Albion is an exciting new series based on the 'rediscovered' second book by Thomas Malory, author of the Le Morte d'Arthur. The first in the series, The Black Chalice, follows wannabe knight Alymere, who discovers the foul Devil's Bible – said to have been written in one night by an insane hermit – which leads him to seek the unholy anti-Grail know as the Black Chalice.

About the Series
'Uncovered' in the parish church of St. Barbara and St. Christopher in the summer of 2006, the Salisbury Manuscript (British Library Add. MS 1138) is the only extant copy of Sir Thomas Malory's The Seconde Boke of kyng Arthur and also His noble Knyghts, apparently written at Thomas Caxton's request after Malory's release from gaol. Deep controversy surrounds the book, which is claimed by some to be a contemporary forgery, possibly written by Caxton himself. In March 2010, Rebellion Publishing announced that it had secured exclusive rights to publish the modernisations of the stories...

Abaddon's eighth shared world, Malory's Knights of Albion will regale our readers with totally original stories set in King Arthur's time, exploring the stories of the less well-known knights – like loyal Sir Alymere – or telling previously-unknown events from the lives of beloved characters close to Britain's greatest king.
With courage and courtesy close to its heart, the series promises to deliver the best of heroic, chivalric adventure, often with a dark or surprising twist.

Announcements / YOU be the judge!
02 March, 2011, 01:36:43 PM
Costumed vigilante 'The Statesman' may be gaining press coverage battling intoxicated baddies and wannabe burglars on the streets of Birmingham...

But now the real law is coming, and you can patrol your local neighbourhood in the guise of the country's most famous future cop thanks to a new Judge Dredd costume* from Cesar, available later this year.

The fantastic costume gives you everything you need to get into full law-giving character – a full body jumpsuit with muscle padding, plus utility belt with pockets for your phone and money, knee and elbow pads, detailed shoulder and eagle pads, boot covers, gloves and a shiny PVC helmet.

One of the most iconic British comic book characters ever created and the very antithesis of American spandex-clad superheroes, Judge Dredd has been bringing justice to the streets of Mega City One for three decades – and is to return to the silver screen later this year with a Hollywood adaptation starring Karl Urban (Star Trek, The Bourne Supremacy) and written by Alex Garland (Sunshine, 28 Days Later).

Published once a week in 2000 AD® and monthly in the Judge Dredd Megazine, Dredd is judge, jury and executioner all rolled into one. Created in 1977 by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra, Dredd patrols the dystopian streets atop his huge Lawmaster bike and dispenses violent justice with his Lawgiver gun.

Matt Smith, editor of 2000 AD, said:
"You see people dressed in lots of 'superhero' costumes but now everyone can be the lawman of the future, Judge Dredd.
"The helmet and shoulder pads make up one of the most iconic costumes in comic books, right up there with Superman's cape and Batman's cowl.
"Dredd is a uniquely British blend of satire, hyper-violence and action that has made him such an icon and a byword for the stern application of the law.
"What's certain is that he is the original British comic book hero – vigilantes spandex-clad superheroes had best beware as the judges take to the streets later this year!"

Judge Dredd said:
"Impersonating a judge is an offence, punk! Around these parts, I'M the law – thirty years in the iso-cubes, creep!"

*Solid helmet and 'Lawgiver' gun not included.

Time is no barrier.

A free online preview was downloaded in its thousands, and now master storyteller Eric Brown's hotly anticipated new time-bending novel is set to hit bookstores.

A troubled novelist tries to hide from the past on a remote and idyllic Greek island as the 20th Century draws to a close. But when he falls in love it threatens to unleash the horrors that haunt him. Meanwhile, more than 60 years in the past and hundreds of miles away, two writers are called by their friend to investigate strange goings-on in Hopton Wood. Their discovery – a strange alien creature – will bring their world, and that of the reclusive novelist in the future, into a gripping and unexpected collision.

Ten years in the writing and his most ambitious novel to date, Eric Brown has crafted a tale of rare scope, populated with emotionally powerful characters. The Blue Portal, a 15,000-word preview of The Kings of Eternity, was downloaded thousands of times on its release on iTunes in December last year.

"A superb novel, rich with precisely the kind of speculation that SF exists for, providing a mesmerising slow-burn of intrigue, tension and human interest that compelled me to read it in one sitting." Peter F. Hamilton on Kings of Eternity

"Perfect. Eric Brown has reinvented the scientific romance for a new century. Intense, elegant, moving, this is Brown's best yet."Stephen Baxter on Kings of Eternity

One of the strongest voices in contemporary science-fiction, Eric Brown captures all the enthusiasm and sense of wonder of the great writers of the Golden Age of Science Fiction. Breathing new life into one of the oldest SF themes of all – first contact – Brown's Helix and Kéthani dealt with the emotional, social and political fallout of the shocking moment when we realise we are not alone in the universe, on both the grandest and humblest of stages. The Kings of Eternity continues in this rich vein, showing the effect of this epoch-changing moment on the lives of a handful of people over the course of decades.

About the Author
Eric Brown is the award-winning author of a huge number of SF novels, children's books, radio plays, articles and reviews, including Helix, The Bengal Station Trilogy, The New York Trilogy, Kéthani, Engineman, Guardians of the Phoenix and The Fall of Tartarus. www.ericbrown.co.uk

Announcements / A sequel 65 million years in the making!
28 February, 2011, 12:10:17 PM
After more than 30 years, one of very first strips to appear in 2000 AD® is to return in blood-splattering, eon-spanning dinosaur-hunting glory.

Dino-terror classic Flesh is to return to the weekly comic with Prog 1724, out on 9 March.

Written by the series' original creator, Pat Mills, and drawn by James Mckay, the new series is the long-awaited sequel to the much-loved original Flesh – part of the line-up in the very first issue of 2000 AD in 1977.

Penned by Mills and drawn by Spanish artist Boix, Flesh was a futuristic Western where time-travelling ranchers farmed dinosaurs like cattle and sent their meat back to a hungry future.

The dinosaurs fought back and destroyed the Trans-Time base – the new series follows the survivors as, stranded millions of years in the past, they are ordered to drive their herds across the prehistoric American landscape to Texas – where another base promises safety ... and profit!

The new series will premiere with a stunning gatefold cover by Death's Head II and Testament artist Liam Sharp.

Matt Smith, editor of 2000 AD, said:
"Flesh was one of the original strips from the very first issue of 2000 AD in 1977 and while there have been spin off stories, we never found out what happened to the survivors of Trans-Time Base Three.

"It‟s great to see the sequel make it into 2000 AD, 30 years after it first appeared – it's a great strip with some fantastically gory dinosaur action that will appeal to both old fans who read the original and new readers who want comics with some real bite!"

BBC.co.uk

About the Series
Rotten bone and raddled flesh, shuffling perils and moaning menaces – Tomes of the Dead reimagines the zombie genre not as an endless retread of the same tired themes, but as a prism crack'd, exploring the gut-churning, flesh-biting world of the shambling dead from a new, different and unexpected direction every time – from Roman zombies to zombie gumshoes and zombie romance to ... hell, if you haven't seen a Romanian Elvis impersonator squaring off against a green-glowing space zombie, then Tomes of the Dead will be a terrifying, fresh-from-the-grave revelation.

One of the three series with which Abaddon Books launched in 2006, Tomes of the Dead is a collection of stand-alone novels that has showcased the talents of a number of brilliant, up-and-coming British and American authors, including Gary McMahon, Al Ewing, Simon Bestwick and Weston Ochse. The Viking Dead is the eleventh Tomes of the Dead story.
