Can anyone recommend a good introductory book to the Warhammer world?

Ultramarines series/ Uriel Ventris chronicles
Grey Knights
Brothers of the snake
Valdor,birth of Imperium
Word Bearers series
Space Wolf (but only the ones by William King)
Macharian Crusade

All of those (and basically every other WH40k novel series) are standalone. Just start at book 1 of that series.
Also,I discussed it here recently, Gothic War duology doesn't get enough love.
