General / Dredd from 2079 to 2099, what happens?
02 July, 2006, 07:51:36 PM
We know that Dredd graduates in 2079 and yet the first Dredd story published in Prog # 2, takes place all the way ahead in the year 2099. 20 years later!

So where are the stories from this missing 20 year period? This was the time when Dredd was building up his reputation as Mega City One's most feared lawman. Surely, there must be some interesting tales to tell, but why haven't Wagner (or other Dredd scribes), to the best of my knowledge written about Dredd in this time period?

I stopped reading 2000AD during the late 80s and most of the 90s, so I'm wondering, were there any stories published then that cover Dredd's early career?

Yes, I know there have been some flashback stories that take place partially durng the missing years, such as 'The Return of Rico' (prog # 30) and the more recent 'Blood Cadets' story (Progs # 1186-1188). But, that's all I can think of.

It just seems strange to me that Dredd's early years haven't been covered much.

Regarding Rejuve treatments, while I don't think there's ever been any detailed information published on exactly what the treatment can and can't do, I get the impression that it makes the person getting the treatment, physically only about 5-10 years younger at most. I also get the feeling that it can only be given a limited number of times before it becomes inaffective.

Personally, I think it would be quite interesting to finally have Dredd accept the post of Chief Judge, perhaps in another 5-10 years time, and then have Rico taking the place of Dredd on the streets as MC1's top street Judge, once he's got a bit more experience under his belt.

Although at the rate Rico's getting bionic parts (Jaw & lungs already), he's gonna end up like Guthrie at this rate, more machine than man ;-)

Heh, shouldn't Peter Parker be about 60 by now? Yank superhero comics, can't stand em. Gave up on them when I was 13 (23 years ago).

While I don't want Dredd to die, it is fun to see him aging and changing with age.

Anyway, the technology certainly exists to transfer his personality/memory to a younger body, should the need arrive.

Will buy JD: The Hunting Party, as I haven't read it before.

Will pass on the Slaine GN. Enjoyed reading it in 2000AD and liked the art, but I'm just not a big Slaine fan.

Heh, after trying to read the latest Black Siddha, I still have no idea what's going on. The first story was OK, but the last couple have been a bit confusing and frankly not very enjoyable.

I definitely want Case Files to include all Dredd, including the colour stuff.

Hopefully, Rebellion will also do a series of Dredd Megazine Case Files books later as well (I'd buy em), as well as a Case Files covering the annual and summer/winter special stories.

Looking forward to EE#18. I always enjoy tales about Space Judges and I don't think I've read these before.

Will probably pass on the PJ Maybe book as most of the stories were reprinted in an EE a short while back.

No plans to buy any Dante. He's a character that started during my 8 years away from 2000AD and just like SinDEx also I've never been able to get into the story or characters.

Bummer! Wonder if I should complain to the 2K shop, although it's probably too late since I got it from them a couple of months ago already.

Just wondering if anybody else has any printing problems with their JD: Brothers of the Blood graphic novel?

On the Colin MacNeil story 'Blood And Duty', there's a black triangular mark on the second panel of the fifth page, which blots out most of one of the speech balloons.

If my web-fu is good today, I'll post a scan of the offending page below.

Just want to know, was this a problem that affected the whole print run, or was I just unlucky and got sent a naff copy?

May eventually rent or borrow it when it's released on DVD.

The other Potter movies were mildly entertaining to watch with the missus on a wet Sunday afternoon, but I wouldn't pay to see it at the cinema and definitely not planning to read the book.

Tried the first Potter book but found it too much of a kiddy book for my tastes.

No idea who dies and don't particulaly care either.

For me the next big book event is going to be the release of George RR Martin's A Dance With Dragons, hopefully next year, or when Banksie finally gets off his arse and writes a new Culture novel.

So what exactly happens in that story in prog 1194 then?

And while it's true that not many perps would dare take on Old Stoney Face in a public loo, the same perps may have no qualms about trying to kill a younger, less experienced Judge while they are using the facilities.

So, my original question stands, public or Justice Department only loos for Judges out on patrol?

So what's the answer then?

Please humour me with this rather odd question.

I've been wondering recently where do Judges go to answer the call of nature when they are out on patrol?

As far as I know, this has never been addressed in a story, although I was away from Tooth during most of the 90s, so maybe it was.

I mean think about it, do they use public lavatories? If yes, that's a bit of a risk as no matter how well trained, skilled and experienced you are in combat, you are still quite vulnerable to attack while relieving yourself.

Or are their special 'Judge Only' WC facilities located throughout the city, which can only be accessed by Judges and which are locked and armoured to prevent a Judge from being attacked, while he/she is doing the business.

Or lastly, are judges just trained to hold it, until they report back to their sector houses at the end of their shifts.

Enquiring minds want to know?
