6 reasons Box of Delights ROCKED:

1) The madness of the wolves' eyes in the title sequence

2) Punch & Judy dude being genuinely sinister

3) Magical realism eat your heart out - Marquez on acid couldn't have come up with some of these normal life/magic interfaces.

4) It's got Herne the Hunter in it.

5) It's NOT a CGI-tastic Hollywood production.

6) "The wolves are running"...

I bought the D.V.D. when it was released and my friends were shocked that I'd never seen it before despite being pretty much the perfect target audience for it (I was 7 when the first episode was broadcast and as big a fantasy/sci-fi fan then as now. Not literally as big. I wasn't 18 stone when I was 7, that would be freakish. No, I mean as big a fan of the genre).

And yes, I bought it because Patrick Troughton was in it. On the same day that I bought the 'Doctor Who - Lost in Time' collection. That's an awful lot of the Mighty Trout.

Anyway, I've watched 4 of the 6 episodes and for what it is it's very good. Yes, the effects aren't much cop. But they're good enough to propel the story along and would probably have looked magical to the 7 year old me that was probably sat in a corner of his bedroom reading a 'Wide Range Reader' and not watching it.

The animation isn't that bad, the performances are really good. Patrick Troughton, James Grout, John Hornsley, all on top form. David Warner wouldn't have been better than Robert Stevens, who is such a good barking mad fiend. Can you imagine him playing Judge Cal? It's good stuff.

He's right on one point though. It'll make a blinding movie one day.

You mean Jonathon Morris don't you, the stuff about Fist of the Northstar is right. It's shite.

Not seen box of delights though. Be nice to watch with Tom I think.

Fist of the North Star is great stuff.  Po-faced, pish-animated mentalism from start to finish.  I mean, come on, how can you NOT like a show that has the hero kickbox a tank?  And a big train thing with a supergun on the back.  And an aircraft carrier.  And the devil - that's right, not *A* devil, THE devil.

AND it's cheap.

VampiraJen

i like fist of the north star too.  gutted it got a below adverage review.  i got it for 27 quid of play.com, so that's even less than a quid an episode...woo!

Wils

even less than a quid an episode

Wouldn't it've been even cheaper to just tape one episode off the telly and watch it over and over again?

Bico

No.
The story might be the same, but he fights different people each week, be it that fella who's quite clearly supposed to be a vampire, or the aircraft carrier, or the tank, or that bloke with the bad leather who kills innocent people in front of Kenshiro's face, or the devil...

Plus, you'd have to shell out for Sky installation and a subscription before you could tape it off the tv, which would actually work out more expensive than buying the box set.  I'll bet you feel *really* foolish now, eh?

Bico

Oh, and dvdpacific.com usually have better prices than Play.com nowadays, but they're an American site, so you'll need a multi-region player before you buy stuff from them.
