Prog / Prog 1612: What evil lurks...?
08 November, 2008, 12:13:02 PM
After last week's corker, another top notch prog!  :D Yay, Dante's back, and it's as good as ever. The last panel could have been more gruesome though, given the buildup.

Loads of letters, but I'll leave those for other boarders. Okay for one other boarder.

Books & Comics / Superman: Secret Identity
22 October, 2008, 09:36:26 PM
I can thoroughly recommend this one.

It's set in the "real" world, so superheroes don't exist and Superman is a famous comic character. A young man in Kansas by the name of Kent is unfortunate to have folks who thought it was amusing to call him Clark. After suffering years of bullying and Superman jokes, he suddenly aquires REAL superman powers. The book takes him from 13 right through to old age, and it's the most interesting and original spin on Superman since Red Son.

Oh and he marries a girl called Lois, but it's all done in a clever plausible way - it isn't one of those books with loads of fanboy references and correlations to the classic story, like Red Son was, excellent though that was.

Prog / Prog 1607 Rule of Law
03 October, 2008, 06:43:54 PM
Woohoo! Friday Prog and got my name on the thread! (Little things make me unreasonably happy!)

Only read Dredd so far - TOP NOTCH - nice humorous one-off from Robbie Morrison. I'm not really familiar with Paul Marshall and Chris Blythe but the art in this is very nice (though I assume they've been in the Prog before as they nail Dredd 100%. I often don't look at credits, so I never know who's done what!) Who'd have pegged
Shaggy
as a nark?

The cover's OK but lacks movement somehow - Dredd seems to be squeezing rather than, as I assume he's supposed to, banging heads together!

The back cover image for clickwheel is great!

Off Topic / Doctor Who the F***???

WORST DOCTOR WHO EVER:

Spotted this in Blackpool yesterday. I wasn't around to see it illuminated but I'll bet that'd scare the kiddies!

Does anyone have any crappy TV or movie merchandising that looks LESS like the original subject than this?

Off Topic / A national treasure

I'm talking about our public libraries. Maybe I'm just blessed in Manchester that they buy so many graphic novels. I've just discovered I can print out my 12-month loan history - I've removed all the novels and CDs from the list below leaving just the comics. I reckon if we say a conservative average of £12 a pop, that's £1,344 worth of comics I've had in just one year for FREE! :D

If you haven't visited yours recently, take a look, and if your librarians don't buy comics, tell them to!

General / AND YOUR ULTIMATE ROBOT IS...
18 September, 2008, 09:25:20 PM

The final tally:

RO-JAWS - 6
JOE PINEAPPLES - 9

I'm happy to say that this would have been my first choice all along, though along the way I nearly changed my mind as all the suggestions rolled in - I rediscovered my love of several old Ro-busters and obscure ABC Warriors.

Thanks for all the votes, It's been real, and GOODNIGHT! :D

PS - Am I the only one who only heard about composers Rogers & Hammerstein years after Robusters and had one of those aaaah! moments?

I find the members listing very unwieldy - who are all these thousands of users with no posts who simultaneously joined on Mon Jun 23, 2008 at 9:32 am?

i found the old system where you could easilly see active users who've posted in the last year was much easier to use. There are just too many pages of the new list and not enough useful ways to manipulate and filter the data.

General / ULTIMATE ROBOT POLL FINAL
11 September, 2008, 07:57:21 PM
Sorry, almost forgot about this!

There were clear voting trends amongst those who like their robots cool and hard, and so picked pineapples and mongrol; and those who prefer a comedy robot, and went for the stogie-sewerdroid combo. Very few split the mix.

RESULTS:
RO JAWS beats Mongrol - 7-5

However, the Pineapples/Stogie bout was a dead heat, so I've been forced to use my casting vote. It's gotta be JOE PINEAPPLES - the coolest assassin ever, and a droid that's comfortable with his sexuality. And besides, thee accent was a leetle annoyeeng after a while, No?

Which sets up an interesting final -
 ROJAWS   vs  JOE PINEAPPLES

General / ULTIMATE ROBOT POLL - THE SEMI-FINALS!
05 September, 2008, 08:16:04 PM
The Democratic Dozen have voted and the results of the quarters are as follows:

RO-JAWS v Dr FEELYGOOD
The doctor is struck off as scum rises to the top by a narrow margin - RO-JAWS WINS (7-5)

TOBY v MONGROL
Mongrol smush! The hound is put down - MONGROL WINS (8-4)

JOE PINEAPPLES v WALTER the WOBOT
No contest. N&V. A1. Cwipes! PINEAPPLES WINS (10-2)

HAMMERSTEIN v CARLOS SANCHEZ ROBOSTOGIE
In the shock upset of the contest, the mighty Mk III War Droid is defeated by a small hispanic cigar! STOGIE WINS (7-5)

So who goes through to the final....you decide:

RO-JAWS v MONGROL
JOE PINEAPPLES v STOGIE

General / ULTIMATE ROBOT POLL - THE QUARTER-FINALS
02 September, 2008, 10:13:42 PM
Thanks to one and all for some great robo-nostalgia there. Many I'd forgotten, several I feel a need to revisit sometime soon!  :geek:

Nobody cared to mention Armoured Gideon, Metalzoic or Maniac 5; and of the ABC warriors, nobody voted for Steelhorn, Morrigun, Happy Shrapnel or Blackblood.

I have put through to the quarter-finals all the droids that received more than one vote. The total was actually nine, so one had to be excluded to make things work. After careful deliberation, I decided that Torque-Armada, whilst being admittedly very cool, is the least robot-like - It's a manned seige engine that happens to move on its own, rather than a robot. Sorry to Cosh & Tordelback there!

So, the pairings, for no particular reason:

RO-JAWS vs DR FEELYGOOD
TOBY vs MONGROL
JOE PINEAPPLES vs WALTER
HAMMERSTEIN vs CARLOS SANCHEZ ROBOSTOGIE

Honourable mention to King Trout's suggestion of Tom Frame, lettring droid supreme. to whom I'll dedicate this poll!

General / ULTIMATE ROBOT POLL!
30 August, 2008, 08:54:34 PM
When I noticed a new boarder had chosen the name "Dr Feeley Good" (Hi!) it reminded me of some of the great robots that have graced the pages of tooth over the years.

We've had ultimate babes, dredd villains etc -- so who are your top 3 Robots? Walter? Charlie? Mek-Quake? I'll be back with my own vote once I've had a chance to think.

Website and Forum / My brain hurts!
14 August, 2008, 07:14:48 PM
All this new technology is confusing me today! Can anyone explain the different ways of posting images in messages?

The FAQ's say
QuoteCan I post images?
Yes, images can be shown in your posts. If the administrator has allowed attachments, you may be able to upload the image to the board.

How can we tell if attachments are allowed? Several threads display images, eg the monthly art comps. If these images have all been placed online, rather than copy'n'pasted into the actual reply (which i've tried!), then what sort of websites are they uploaded to? How do they display without all the rest of the website's gubbins showing (I have photos on Flickr - if I posted a link, would it display my pic only or just link to the flickr website?)

Apologies if I'm being truly dim or if this has been asked and answered before - I've tried a search but couldn't find anything useful.

Basically I need Image Posting for Dummies!

Website and Forum / Koom Skrree!
13 May, 2008, 11:44:44 PM
Couple of things pique my curiosity about this page -
1. What the hell does Koom Skrree mean? There's nothing more annoying than an obscure fanboy reference you think you should get but don't!
2. What were the banned usernames banned for? Just what sort of Zragian behaviour warrants ejection from this place?

Books & Comics / worst comic purchase
10 May, 2008, 11:59:23 PM
I'm inspired by the "worst batman Comic" thread.

With Batman I only tend to shell out for what i know is quality (libraries are there for the rest!)
But I did buy "Superman True Brit" - in snecking hardback! Damn you John Cleese!

What's been your greatest waste of money?
