Title: The Best of Youtube (Favourite Youtubers)
Post by: radiator on 01 March, 2019, 04:56:20 AM
It ain't all PewDiePie, Logan Paul and unboxing videos...

To counter the other thread, lets have recommendations of channels doing great work on the platform. Imo there is a generation of very talented and creative individuals coming up that are putting out genuinely great content that is of a increasingly polished and professional standard. Here goes:

Philosophy Tube - brilliant short video essays about various subjects.

I Am Incorrigible - this guy basically just collates/edits together various bits of news coverage - essential for following the whole Brexit debacle as I live in the US.

Red Letter Media - needs no introduction, really. Their humour isn't for everyone, but their content - specifically their 'Best of the Worst/Wheel of the Worst' shows often border on avant garde and make me laugh more than any mainstream comedy show.

Jeremy Parrish - One half of the retro gaming podcast Retronauts who has a side hobby of cataloguing and reviewing in painstaking detail every single title released for the NES, Game Boy, SNES and now Mega Drive and N64 in slick and informative mini documentaries. He is doing God's work.

Alt Shift X - superb documentaries/animated infographics deep diving into Game of Thrones/ASoIaF lore and fan theories.

Arlo - quite simply, a literal muppet that covers all things Nintendo. Unlike most videogame coverage, his content is 100% free of snark and cynicism. I love him!

Three Arrows - pretty heavy channel by a German dude who primarily specialises in combatting and debunking right wing and far right propaganda. Also recommend Shaun whose channel is along similar lines.

Some More News - a biting and exasperated satirical take on current events by a host who often seems on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Simultaneously funny and bleak.

Jim Sterling - videogame-related rants - he often goes a bit over the top for my liking but has a certain turn of phrase that is often amusing.

Shut Up & Sit Down - tabletop board game reviews by amiable British chaps.

HBomberguy - hard to pin down exactly what it is he does, really. Sort of loosely covering pop culture stuff with a surreal/leftist/Social Justice slant. Like him a lot.

MovieBob - movie critic. I don't agree with him about everything but he certainly knows his stuff.

SNES Drunk - super nintendo related trivia and listicles

Contrapoints - clever, witty and acerbic video essays on all sorts of things.

Lindsay Ellis - brilliant pop culture analysis and video essays. Her three part series about the Hobbit movies is I would say definitive.

Swede Mason - absurdist musical mashups

Dankmus - absurdist musical Simpsons mashups

Neil Cicierega - absurdist pop music mashups

I'm a photography nerd so I also follow a lot of photographers, among them:
Joe Allam
James Popsys
Peter McKinnon
Thomas Heaton

I don't gamble much, and certainly not on online fruit machines, but I d enjoy a bit of The Bandit (https://www.youtube.com/feed/subscriptions/UCx_MTG3VFh3dgcfUoBZeOLA).

I also don't have any interest in Magic the Gathering but This guy (https://www.youtube.com/feed/subscriptions/UCTp-iVOtTrKau0skmfZlo5Q) does some fun videos opening boxes and slagging of the game and its players.

I also enjoy Mr Puzzle (https://www.youtube.com/feed/subscriptions/UCuZ4plJK1KkSqRBYps3rNww) as he saves me the bother o trying those fiendish puzzles your aunt gets you at Christmas.

More gaming stuff -

GamezOf War is really good. He's just a nice chilled dude who's quite positive about everything. He doesn't make a huge volume of videos but his channel is definitely worth a look.
Highlights are his Ultimate Sega Genesis Guide to Shmups video and his Forgotten Gaming Mascots video (particularly the bit about Rolo to the Rescue). He just comes across as a really nice bloke who likes waffling on about games.

8 Bit Guy is good too. He does quite a bit of restoration of old computers and consoles.

Some odds and end from the various channels I follow and their works...

Captain Disillusion (https://www.youtube.com/user/CaptainDisillusion) explains many fake viral videos that circulate the internet, going through the techniques used to create them and how viral algorithms push these pointless excursions to your feed. He takes trash and makes gold.

Thew Adams (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCP3AVTw_73U_8jMzLw5TbEg) talks about toys mostly, generally Transformers. There's no reason why someone like me who barely collects memorabilia or figures should be into this but Thew is such a lovable, emotive fellow that he pretty much got me to pick up IDW's More Than Meets The Eye comics and rekindle my affection for all things Cybertronian. Also, Puns! And 2000AD references!

Defunctland (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVo63lbKHjC04KqYhwSZ_Pg) makes a series of mini documentaries surprisingly comprehensive on closed theme parks, rides and amusement arcades amongst other things.

Quinton Reviews (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCM0V8r4kuIWIl6Sy-NHj2lg) is in much the same wheelhouse as HBomberguy, covering a wide variety of subjects and covers all of them with a fair amount of comprehension. Has also done a lot of good charity work these last few years.

Fredrik Knudsen (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbWcXB0PoqOsAvAdfzWMf0w) is an archivist. He makes full length documentaries of various topics from cults, to internet phenomena, to people of interest. A video of Down The Rabbit Hole is a top priority watch whenever it gets uploaded.

Kyle Kallgren (https://www.youtube.com/user/oancitizen) is a film critic i've been following for nearly 10 years, and he's gone from strength to strength. He recently put out a scathing critique on how Birth of a Nations endurance is a misguided one, I heartily recommend you check it out.
