This one is drawing to a close. Will it be another confident victory for Team Current? Maybe they seem to have a strong start but you still have a day to get your votes in. Counting up in the morning.

As for me well this one is a little tough. The issue isn't who will win but how much to recognise the other writer. I really like a good chunk of what Alan McKenzie did in the Prog. Summer Magic is great I like Brigand Doom and yep Soul Gun Warrior really worked. Pete Milligan outside the Prog I find a bit hit and miss, Tharg however gets the best out of him. Forget Bad Company which we all know is fantastic (including the two most recent series), let's talk Counterfeit Girl, Shadows, The Dead, Sooner and Later, Hewligan's Haircut, Tribal Memories... so many mini classic. I'd like to give him a whitewash I enjoy his work so much BUT...

Alan McKenzie 1 : Pete Milligan 4

Team Classic vs. Team Current
Only work for Tharg to be Considered

Steve ‘No relative’ Moore is possibly best known by some as the mentor to Alan ‘Also no relative’ Moore - which is a shame as it utterly underplays his contribution to the Prog. For many the master of the done in one, introducing Future Shocks* AND Tales of Telguuth to the Prog. He’s a true legend of the UK comic scene. Peter Hogan on the other hand has probably done some of his most famous work (outside of Tharg’s so not relevant here) spinning off from the work of Moore. His recent contribution to Zaucer of Zilk, which qualified him for this tourney shows that with Tharg however bumpy his road he’s still a class act.

*Is this true or just some bastard rumour in my addled memory?

Time for you to decide your favourite as the droids square up to the tee…

Remember for this tourney you have 5 votes to distribute as you please between these two artists, whole numbers only. So you can vote 5 - 0; 4 - 1; or 3 - 2; either way depending on how much more you like one artist's work over the other.

If you can’t be doing with that just name your favourite - remember bold tags, or other ways of highlighting always appreciated - and I’ll give them 3 votes and nowt to the other droid.

Three day votes, so this one ends morning of Thursday 24th June

Remember we only consider work for Tharg in these Tourneys

What the heck is all this about - well we have a thread for that

How does this voting work? Look here

I don’t understand how this works, what are the rules of the Solhiem Cup - yep got ya covered there too

Anything else just ask and I’ll make something up. Most importantly, have fun!

VOTING CLOSED

Pretty cut and dry this one. It would have been a much more interesting and tense vote I suspect if we'd open things up beyond Tharg's watch BUT that's not the tourney we have and so however devisive some of Rob Williams recent work is there was no stopping him rule the rooster over a writer who may have learnt his craft with Tharg but has taken those lessons elsewhere.

Overall the tight result for Team Current yesterday is backed up by this far more one sided affair to give them a confident start. One suspects Team Classic have far more to come...

Team Current 2 : Team Classic 0

Team Current 122 : Team Classic 73

I saw that interview the other day via Facebook and its great BUT the thing I want most now is to see the full picture he has above his drawing board. The colour on that from the angle we see it look ASTONISHING!

There's a whole post in the set up thread about my Mills call

https://forums.2000ad.com/index.php?topic=47640.msg1063035#msg1063035

As far as I recall Alan hasn't - unfortunately - written more than a few one-offs since Prog 2000 (2016) and hasn't done a series (or a load of Dredd) as per the benchmark.

Wow those pencils are astonishing. Its interesting to see in the final colour choices - which work really well to establish environment - which bits ping out more on the pencils than the final image.

Last chance for this one votes - there's a count a coming and that count is coming in the morning so get a votin', get a votin' hard...

So my hard vote goes a little like this Garth Ennis is one of my favourite writers, outside the Prog. In the Prog its not even close. However since I do consider Crisis in my pantheon of work for Tharg some great work there needs to be considered BUT its not enough and ultimately Tharg's Palace was little more than a training ground for Garth, where for Rob Williams its been both training ground and home of his best work and so on that basis:

Garth Ennis 0 : Rob Williams 5

Whatever we think of Mark Millar there’s no denying he’s gone on to become one of Tharg’s highest profile alumni so he’s doing something right and he learnt how to do that in the pages of 2000ad. Kek-W can be rewritten off as a take-over writer - a trend he kicked off taking over from Mark Millar in fact on Canon Fodder BUT he’s clearly so much more than that and has become one of Tharg’s mainstays in recent years.

VOTING CLOSED

This one was close, as is fitting for such titans of the comic. In the end thoguh pretty early on Pat Mills started to establish a lead and from that point on Alan Grant was always playing catch up. So the first round has gone to Team Current and they certainly seem to have got some big guns firing early in this tournament - judging by other rounds. The question is can they sustain it and what do Team Classic have in reserve?

Team Current 1 : Team Classic 0

Team Current 48 : Team Classic 42

Grey Area - Life on Earth

The delights of the contrast in 2000ad where my focus last time and this time its largely the same. 'Life on Earth' is a simple done in one character piece focusing on Resting Bitch Face and Compelling Male Musk Odor and its quite brilliant.

To this point these two Harmonious Free have largely been played for laughs alone the aliens in a strange land. They have played that part perfectly and their off kilter dialogue has made them fun character, really engaging and enjoyable. These five pages blow them open and take them from that into truly wonderful rounded souls.

The Harmonious Free are a hive mind, linked telepathically. So as well as seeing the amusing insights into the way Bitch reacts to different aspects of life on Earth she also reveals the depth of her loneliness isolated from her culture telepathic connection. The contrast of the character played for fun giggles and the depth of this isolation, this contrast, makes this revalation hit home incredible hard.

This is then further emphasized when she mets her one link to what has been and his reality on Earth, the crushing bigotry of squad he has been placed in pushes even that release away. Deeper still it exposes the way life on Earth is crushing and isolating Musk even more. Unable to entrust his sore even with this one connection to the shared experience he has known before.

Its magnificently heart breaking and all the more so as these folks have been such fun in the past, to suddenly be submerged into their sad isolation is just compelling.

Ordered. Thanks for the heads up- though as usual, Rebellion seem to price the postage as if gold-plated robotic carrier pigeons are delivering it to my house in a silken envelope.

Oh don't you get that. I pay the extra and have an eagle swoop down with my silken envelopes.

I'm more than a little disappointed that the third volume of Janus Stark is digital only.

I'd not even noticed there was a third Janus Stark volume - yeah it would be a shame if that was digital only.

As discussed elsewhere, but just to note here as well a hardcopy version is now in the shop

Well that's good news!

Well it would be if I wasn't such a numb nut.

Finding that I remember I had my 50% off sub voucher and so inspired by my desire to get this popped to the shop to do a quick trawl to add things I'd not ordered yet and get a nice big order in.

Managed to do that and I have a lovely big order in at a very good price... I of course forgot to add Janus Stark Vol. 3 to it - the very reason I started the order in the first place!

15
Arh its now showing as Print - which might explain when I saw your message in the 'Upcoming Thrills' thread and went to the shop I couldn't see it at all. Maybe it was added in error as digital only?
