Am I uncultured if I only know Ned from the role as Otis in the Superman films?

First movie I saw him in.

I would have given Millar a point for being able to write comic strips at all - it's definitely a talent, and I've naturally steered away from any 5-0 votes (except when provoked that one time), but the problem is that if I give him a point then I'm giving a point to what was oftentimes quite hateful work. Not as in I personally didn't like it a lot, but the open misogyny and homophobia. You could perhaps mark it down as of it's time, in the way that the much-loved Spaced jumped on the "gay!" bandwagon without blinking, but I'm voting now, not then, so...

Also, the Deadworld resurgence has been stonking - so this particular one-sided see-saw is not driven entirely by negativity.

Soul Gun Assassin: a sentient moon recruits a spectral assassin in order to take out a warmongering space bastard who's attempting to profit (in human souls) from an engineered middle eastern war.

Pretty thought-provoking stuff.

On the other hand, in R.A.M. Raiders, the male character keeps dissing his stay-at-home-girlfriend, who poses and pouts in the shower and complains about her damaged footwear before becoming his permanent sex-ghost.

However much Bad Company ended up literally guffing in our faces [see FOOF! below], it started out as a majestic tour de force of grim sci-fi.

And there was a sense in which 2000 AD was, somewhere around that time, and for whatever reason, running out of steam a little. So, some new blood coming in to shake things up must have seemed like a great idea.

Always be reading Millar's own comments (as Jayzus was saying) about his time at the Toothface (from Meg 323):

Quote
It is funny actually because I only got into 2000 AD after I began working on it ... I didn't realize how good 2000 AD was until much later on - and I hate to say this but I think I wrote some of the worst 2000 AD stories ever. I was lucky to get in there because [established writers] were busy working in the States ... It was really difficult for me because a good half of what I wrote was rubbish and the other half was just okay.

Williams 3 : 2 Ennis

I like Williams drive to actually do something with characters, but we still ended up with shouty maniacs on Titan (again) and now Super-Hershey (all down to some alien magic sauce), so it's not all a bed of roses. End of Days is a sort of literary romp, but it's arguably not really Dredd.

Ennis was a sort of confectioner of Dredd during his tenure - but it was well written, well plotted and always entertaining.

Two exceptional comic-writing talents. What swings it is Nemesis the Warlock.

Black Summer - this started off really strongly, I thought, with some fascinating structural choices in terms of the storytelling. There's an odd leap mid-season, though, where the experience level and cohesiveness of the protagonists seems to go up an order of magnitude - I had to go and check Wikipedia to see if I'd somehow missed an episode - or even an entire season.

Imperfect, but a shambling, moaning, brain-munching gem of the zombie apocalypse genre.

city of the damned 5-0

Get out now....

... just get out...

GO!

Although perhaps there's room for a Best Frame From City of the Damned Tourney?

Just to provide an alternative perspective - my 8-year old daughter loves The Phoenix, which has stories in it that are not terribly far removed from Regened stuff. (We couldn't go beyond our first yearly sub, but that's another story and is entirely the fault of the publisher, rather than the comic's content.) Her cousin (same age) also loves our hand-me-down Phoenix's.

She also loved the recent Misty stuff, and Pandora Perfect. The only problem there is that accessibility for her is via my stored PDFs, and that's not an easy access format for her. She also likes Dogman, Underpants, Wings of Fire etc.

So, content-wise, I do believe there's a market for comics. It doesn't make sense, though, to package Regened content alongside standard 2000 AD content, because of the graphic nature of a lot of the non-Regened strips. If these comics were on the shelf of my local (US) comic emporium, she'd buy 'em.

(I'm not sure that Spacewarp is a great measuring stick - but my three arguments there are to do with format, quality and tone. A metaphorical old man ranting at young people in the park about his conspiracy theories will probably have the same effect as really having an old man rant at young people in the park about his conspiracy theories. 2000 AD had the advantage of multiple writers, so there wasn't just that single voice. A spoonful of sugar...)

The Juve Mutated Kung Fu Kleggs (JD)
The Corps
The Kleggs (M201, their own one-off)
Meatmonger (JD)

Plus Helter Skelter (alt. Grampus), Ace Trucking (generic foe) & solo appearances of Sensitive Klegg.
