General / Big Finish audios?
01 September, 2020, 12:55:49 PM
In an epic re-read of past progs I was reminded of the existence of the Big Finish dramas. I've never heard them and would really love to. They're not available from Big Finish directly. Does anyone know if these are available anywhere? It seems that even finding the CDs on eBay is rare.

Prog / Prog 578!!!
14 March, 2015, 08:42:19 PM
Just needed a place to express my utter joy at reaching Prog 578 in my epic read-through from #1!
This prog was the one that (aged 12) got me finally hooked on Thrill-Power. I'd been picking up the odd copy for a couple of years but somehow managed to avoid being sucked in.
The physical memory that washed over me as I read it, of sitting in my Aunt's window seat, eating Skittles and absolutely loving it to death! Even the letters and readers art were so familiar! A formative experience indeed!
As for the Prog - Bad Company II, Tales from the Doghouse (featuring Back-To-Front Jones), Judge Dredd: Full Mental Jacket, and ABC Warriors (with stunning Bisley b/w art). Is it just nostalgia or was this an utterly classic Prog and an example of 2000AD at its best?

Just noticed this advertised on the 2000AD Facebook.
Good prices, but... are they any good?

Games / Dredd vs Death
11 August, 2014, 06:19:38 PM
I just remembered that I bought this in a GOG sale ages ago and played a few hours, then (feeling underwhelmed) didn't play again. Booted it up just now and had a very happy hour blasting perps and shouting Drokk etc.

It is clunky as hell (keep getting momentarily stuck on objects, and swapping weapons when I meant to arrest a perp and countless other annoyances), and basic in many ways but I actually really like this game... anyone else?

General / Jumping on point for The Meg?
04 July, 2014, 04:05:40 PM
Hi there.
I haven't read the Megazine for years. I'm sure I saw (either in a Thrill Mail, or Tharg's Nerve Centre) that there was a handy jumping on point coming up, with all new stories etc.
Did I dream it? If not, did I miss it? If not, does anyone know which issue?
Cheers.

Books & Comics / Scream! #1 24/03/84
18 May, 2014, 08:03:56 PM
I just re-read the first issue of Scream! last night!

I remember it being one that I occasionally read when I was 9(ish) but couldn't recall much of it.

Now, as an adult, I found much of it childish and lightweight (especially compared with 2000AD of the time, which I'm also re-reading) - all except Monster that is.

Monster by Alan Moore and Heinzl is awesome! Really adult stuff! Brilliantly told. When a kids comic starts with a 12 year old burying is father in the back garden and implies themes of physical abuse and madness... AND does it well, you know its something special.  Really spooky art too :)

Then I turned the page to The Thirteenth Floor and was instantly transported back 30 years!  My adult self doesn't think its very good at all (sadly) but it had a huge impact on me as a kid. Ah nostalgia!

The rest, The Dracula File, Tales from the Grave, A Ghastly Tale, Library of Death,  and The Terror of the Cats, is pretty standard kids horror stuff. Though I enjoyed some of the art (especially Eric Bradbury). And then there's the sub-Beano comedy-horror of Fiends and Neighbours!

All in all though, a marvelous trip down memory lane.

Does anyone else remember this short lived comic? What did/do you think of it?

Classifieds / charity shop progs (Bristol)
01 April, 2014, 04:29:47 PM
Hi
I saw this pile of bagged progs in the RSPCA shop on Gloucester Road in Bristol. I didn't look through them (would have been too tempting) but there appear to be quite a few.
Just thought I'd post it up if any Bristol or SW Squaxx are interested.

General / Skizz
30 March, 2014, 12:23:33 PM
Not sure if this is the right place to put this but...

I'm currently re-reading 2000AD from Prog 1 at a rate of between one and six progs a week. I mentioned somewhere else that I fancied starting an old prog review - but I won't (its just too much like hard work and would descend to an "I liked this one and didn't like this one" level very quickly).

However I've just read Prog330 and its a blinder! This was about the time I started reading 2000AD, albeit intermittently. The first Slaine story, which is still one of my favourite introductory episodes, was a great nostalgia trip for me.

But its Skizz I want to mention here. This strip finishes in this prog and it was an emotional moment for me (again). I'd forgotten just how awesome that strip was. For the 2000AD at the time it feels so adult and serious (compared to Robo-Hunter et al) while still retaining humour and violence that we all love the Prog for.

Having just read up to this prog, this feels like the first story of this this type - with a less crazy premise, a more realistic tone, and a present day setting. Am I right? There may have been a few Future Shocks that hit a more nuanced tone I guess, and some Dredd episodes were already bringing in the more overt political commentry, but no other single strip up to this point hits the mark.

For me, reading it again alongside the current output, it really holds its own. Maybe these days it would have  stronger language and a bleaker ending? But other than that I could see this in a current prog and going down really well as a counterpoint to the uberviolent, sweary craziness.

Does anyone remember how it was received at the time? What do others think now? Any other strips of the time strike you this way?

General / Judge Sherman?
25 April, 2013, 04:23:40 PM
Hi
I'm re-reading a lot of back progs at the moment and just read the JD story "New Year is Cancelled" in Prog146. Was wondering if anything came of the boy genius Albert Sherman in later progs? Like 15 years later does he become a full Judge? If so what Prog/Story?
Thanks :)
(p.s. I'm a fairly new member and I wanted to search the forum to see if anyone had asked this before... can't find a search field anywhere, is there one?)

Hi all
Just a little bit of an introduction...
I started reading 2000AD in the 500s I guess (I was around 11/12 at the time). Remember loving Bad Company, Slaine, etc.  Read till around Prog 1030, and during that time collected back issues with a religious zeal! Then had a mad moment of "grown-upness" when I needed money more than thrill power (or so I foolishly believed) and I stopped reading and sold the lot (Progs 2 - 1030, with only about 120 omissions) for £500! In the meantime I picked up and dropped a few american comics. Pah!
Picked it up again at Prog 1776 and must say I'm loving it again! Nostalgia! And new thrills! Now delivered electronically to my laptop! The Future is here!
Loving Dredd (of course), and the Savage reboot is amazing! Still hate Flesh (always did), and not impressed with Red Seas, but these are minor flies in an awesome ointment :)
All hail Tharg!  I shall never stray again.
