Books & Comics / Re: Dredd Case Files 01
14 February, 2006, 01:53:08 AM
As this thread has sprung back to life, here's my tuppence worth on the subject.

Firstly, it's an absolutely beautifully put-together package and if the rest of the series are up to the same standard then I'll be buying the lot. I love the smell of new books in the morning.

I had read most of these stories before in one reprint format or another, but I got rid of all my old Eagle/Quality reprints many years ago so it's been a while. I agree that a lot of the early stories seem pretty ropey nowadays but it's pretty interesting to see how some of the background has developed even over the course of that first year, e.g. Grand Judge -> Chief Judge. To be honest, despite it's rather unexpected message of tolerance, the Robot War doesn't do it for me. I don't think it really hits its stride until Luna-1.

I also agree with whoever said it would have been nice to include a summary title, writer and artist for each story. That may have been a good use of those blank pages before the splash pages. Mind you I would also have liked to see the episodes of Bonjo From Beyond the Stars or whatever it was that filled up the blank half-pages.

I do have a couple of questions which some of you might be able to answer.

1. Why the hell is there an X-Wing fighter in the middle of one of the stories?

2. Bill Ward, who gets the extremely curt bio "provided art for The Mega City 5000", clearly wasn't much of an artist. How did he get the gig and what was his day job?

3. Is the image of Dredd in the spacesuit on page 4 of Luna 1 War the worst thing Brian Bolland's ever drawn?

4. When's the next one out?

Fordidden Planet on Buchanan Street Glasgow have half a dozen copies carefully hidden away on a low shelf in the back

That would be the bit between Jonah Hex and Justice League in their alphabetical GN section, then...  ;-)

I think it's already been established that they still wont be able to reprint the offending episodes, but volume 2 will include a recap of the missing pages.

However, what I've been thinking is that maybe some boarder with the resources (and time on his hands) could scan the missing pages and post them for our edification!? I'd lend you some bandwidth.

I was quite surprised as they had it there yesterday. Didn't realise this was normal, as I usually just pick up two or three at once.

Bah! I thought I would get to start this off. Although I have to admit I was very surprised when I went into Forbidden Planet to pick up last week's Prog, and saw the new one sitting there winking at me! Still no Case Files, mind.

A slight downturn this week, I thought, but still a good prog all round.

I haven't been back long enough to know what the Caballistics revelations mean (although I enjoyed the main story) and Slaine's transformation into Hercule Poirot is nothing short of laughable.

On the other hand, Ten Seconders and SD continue to impress and Dredd is solid stuff, even if I expected the villain of the piece to be a bit less ordinary.

Oh, and a nice dig from Tharg at people who post reviews on the net minutes after the Prog's fallen through their letterbox, but wont write in...

PS I also broke my lifelong embargo on buying the Megazine, so now have the last three to check out tonight.

This isn't my auction, but if anyone in the London area wants to fill in a few gaps in their collection at a knock-down price, this looks good.

H'mm. Intriguing.

I don't generally spend ?10 a month on ongoing comics so unfortunately it's no use. However, as I live in Glasgow, I'd be interested to know who or where this supplier is, as I would certainly be willing to give him the benefit of some of my irregular custom.

"We can still kill them both."
"Wir k?nnen jetzt die beiden t?ten."

"I understand German, you know."
 "Ich verstehe Deutsch, wissen Sie."

Although these are both fairly formal "RP" German and , as such, completely miss the vernacular and idiomatic aspect of the originals. Number 2 in particular is basically meaningless.

Depends what OS/Software you're using.

In XP, just erasing your history should do it. In 98 you have to boot into DOS and delete the index.dat files.

Alternatinvele, a free program called CCleaner deletes a whole load of rubbish from your system and I think that's one of them.

You can't do it directly from Excel, but just copy the whole range and paste it into any picture editor (Paint will do just fine.) You can then save it as any image format you like, so you can decide on the optimum file size vs. image definition.

Sadly, I do this for my Fantasy Football League and it does make a big different in the file size.

However, it is your page and, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I'm not knocking, as it's clearly a labour of love (and very informative to boot), but wouldn't it save a lot of time and space just to export the Excel pages as jpg images?

Despite my normal Morrison-philia, I've completely avoided this so far. Is it worth picking up for someone who has never been big on US comics, so doesn't have an encyclopaedic knowledge of DC's obscure back catalogue? For what it's worth, the only recent mainstream Marvel/DC stuff I've read has been Morrison's JLA and X-Men?

David, Forbidden Planet in Glasgow have had the Dante collection for a while now: I distinctly remember not buying it the day I got Total War. On the other hand, I'm getting a bit sick of going in every other day to see if Case Files is in yet...
